Netflix’s latest cancelations have instigated an armistice for V-Wars and a break-up for October Faction.
The two monster genre television shows, each one an adaptation of an Idw comic book title, have been officially canceled in one fell swoop by the streaming giant, according to THR. The move occurs shortly after Netflix issued a second season renewal for its other Idw adaptation, the formerly-beleaguered Locke & Key. It’s a move that was clearly made in light of a shifting industry schedule landscape ravaged by the coronavirus, leading to more focused priorities for the formerly spendthrift streamer.
V-Wars is arguably the more surprising of the two cancelations, seeing as the sci-fi/horror series—which operated under the purview of showrunners William Laurin and Glenn Davis—was seemingly designed to cater to a built-in fanbase, tapping Ian Somerhalder, former star of The CW’s longtime franchise-spawning hit, The Vampire Diaries, as...

Two of Netflix’s freshman drama series will not see a second season. The streaming giant has canceled vampire drama series V Wars starring Ian Somerhalder, based on Jonathan Maberry’s bestselling book, and October Faction, based on the Idw comics by Steve Niles, Deadline has confirmed.
V Wars, published in 2012 by Idw Publishing, debuted as a collection of prose stories that chronicles the first Vampire War. Somerhalder starred as Dr. Luther Swann, who enters a world of untold horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these “vampires.” Swann races against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.

Calling all “Vampire Diaries” fans! Ian Somerhalder is officially back in the bloodsucker game and teasing his new character on the upcoming Netflix series “V-Wars.” But spoiler, alert, he’s not playing a vampire — at least we don’t think.

V Wars, Netflix's television adaptation of Jonathan Maberry's vampire comic book series, stars Ian Somerhalder.
V Wars is set to immerse its starring actor, Ian Somerhalder, into a familiarly associated scenario, immersed amongst vampires, just as he’d previously done as an immortal for eight seasons of The CW's The Vampire Diaries, which ended in 2017. This time, however, he’ll be on the human side of the struggle.

Ian Somerhalder is back in the vampire game, courtesy of Netflix.
The streaming service has given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order to the drama “V-Wars,” an adaptation of the Idw novel of the same name. The “Vampire Diaries” alum will lead the cast, but — spoiler alert — not as a bloodsucker.
“V-Wars” tells the story of Dr. Luther Swann (Somerhalder), who enters a world of horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. While the disease begins to spread and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps, with normal people pit against the growing population of vampires. Swann must race against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.

The project is not Somerhalder’s first dip into the supernatural, which comes just one year after his long-running series “The Vampire Diaries” wrapped its eight-season run on The CW.
The drama hails from High Park Entertainment and Idw Entertainment and is based off Idw’s franchise of the same name, written by best-selling author Jonathan Maberry. William Laurin and Glenn Davis (“1-800-Missing”) will serve as showrunners, with “Stargate”s Brad Turner directing and exec producing. Eric Birnberg and Thomas Walden will exec produce for High Park, alongside Idw Entertainment president David Ozer and CEO Ted Adams, and Games Gibb for Marada Pictures.

The CW has made its picks for the fall and the adaptation of the witchy L.J. Smith series, Secret Circle, helmed by The Vampire Diaries executive producer Kevin Williamson, is a go. However, two other supernatural series Awakening and Heavenly have been passed over.
Secret Circle, a show also based on another series by The Vampire Diaries author, L.J. Smith, stars Britt Robertson (Life Unexpected), Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Natasha Henstridge (Drop Dead Diva, Eli Stone), and Phoebe Tonkin (Smallville).
Awakening was a series described as The Vampire Diaries meets The Walking Dead by Canadian writer-producers William Laurin and Glenn Davis (The Listener).
Heavenly was a show that followed a former angel and an attorney who team up to save people, starring Lauren Cohan (Chuck, The Vampire Diaries) and Ben Aldridge (Lark Rise to Candleford).

It looks like The Walking Dead will be your only source for televised zombie fare. The CW looked at the variety of pilots it had on the slab for the 2011-2012 season. And while it accepted Kevin Williamson's new show Secret Circle (go figure), the network passed on Awakening . The show was going to star Lucy Griffiths, Titus Welliver and Brian Hallisay and told of two sisters who were at odds with one another during a zombie apocalypse. William Laurin and Glenn Davis created the proposed show. So, there you have it, the CW loves its vampires, witches and Winchester brothers. But not zombies.

Part three is here. Now I'll have to think of something else to write about. I kid. Not a lot has changed since the last two columns, where we talked about some of the pilots in production. Casting of the pilots has begun, and one notable development was the casting of "Touch." Kiefer Sutherland of "24" fame has been cast as the father. The downside of that casting is the pilot won't be shot until late May/early June, due to Sutherland's current commitments. That does give them more time to find a good actor for the son. In this series, success or failure will rest on the actor hired to play the son. Awakening "Awakening" (The CW), written by William Laurin and Glenn Davis, centers on two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a ...

It’s pilot season in the Us. The time of year where the networks finance and film the best (well, most marketable) pilot scripts that grabbed their attention, with the hope of a few being strong enough to warrant a series commitment for 2011/12.
Many will be so heinous they’ll never air; some will impress execs enough that they’ll go to series, only to be axed amidst low ratings; a handful may be lucky enough to last a whole season on-air; and a few may even be popular with audiences and justify a second season. Well, you never know!
Below is a list of 20 pilots that have my interest right now, based solely on their premise or the talent involved. Obviously, it’s unfair to judge these pilots before we’ve seen them, but this is intended to be a quick overview of the positive and negative buzz surrounding them right now.

The CW got on the board today with its first pilot orders this season. The network has picked up 4 drama pilots, including Awakening, the spec script the CW bought just last week. CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff had made launching medical, legal and cop franchises on the network a priority and her pilot picks reflect that. Three of the 4 pilots are procedurals - one medical (Hart of Dixie), which comes from Gossip Girl co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, one police drama (Cooper and Stone), and one legal (Heavenly), which has supernatural elements. Additionally, zombie drama Awakening has a legal drama element, as the central character is a public defender. Here are descriptions of the 4 CW pilots: Awakening, written on spec by William Laurin & Glenn Davis, centers on two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising. Zombies may be invading the CW. The network has recently bought a spec script called Awakening about “two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising.” The script was written by Canadian writer-producers William Laurin and Glenn Davis (The Listener) and is in consideration for a pilot pickup for fall. Early speculation is that this new series could be like The Vampire Diaries meets HBO’s The Walking Dead.
Over at NBC, David Greenwalt’s (Buffy, Angel) newest project, Grimm, has been greenlit with Jim Kouf (Ghost Whisperer, Angel) co-writing the script with Greenwalt. These two are joined in the executive producer circle by Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner (Hot in Cleveland).Grimm is described as “a fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist.”
So, what do you think of these new projects?...

It had to happen. The popular and critical success of AMC's The Walking Dead — which is quite possibly the best thing to happen to the zombie genre since, well, forever — has already spawned an imitator.

Howard T. Owens (Master Chef, The Biggest Loser), Carolyn Bernstein and Todd Cohen have also been announced as producers.
Such a buy doesn't guarantee anything, of course, other than giving the network the option to develop the project further.

Aaron Sorkin is moving back into television with a pilot about the cable news business at HBO.
Sorkin, currently an Oscar nominee for his screenplay for "The Social Network," has been researching a show about cable news for a while and reportedly spent time with Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews at MSNBC, as well as at Fox News and CNN. The show has a pilot order from HBO, with Sorkin and Scott Rudin executive producing, Deadline reports.
Backstage drama is old hat for Sorkin: Two of the three previous series he created, "Sports Night" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," were set at TV shows. The new project will probably also be at least partly about the political arena Sorkin dealt with on "The West Wing." The pilot will film later this year.
In other pilot news:
The CW already has vampires and demons on its schedule, and now it's going after zombies.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the network has purchased the rights to Awakening, a new drama from Canadian writer/producers William Laurin and Glenn Davis.
The site describes the drama, which may premiere this fall, as the story of "two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising."
So... sort of The Walking Dead meets The Vampire Diaries? We'd totally watch that! How about you?...

I look forward to the day when all TV shows feature the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse. Enter 'Awakening', a new zombie-drama picked up by the CW. According to Deadline, it's 'like The Walking Dead for young females. Awakening, a zombie drama from Canadian writer-producers William Laurin and Glenn Davis (The Listener) centers on two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising'. It's not certain that a pilot will actually surface, but it is likely. What say you, room for one more zombie themed TV show on the CW?...

While a Warrior Princess goes head to head with The Thing on ABC, The CW has begun to mix an 'alluring' cocktail of teen angst with a dash of zombie menace.
TVLine reports that Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess, Spartacus: Blood and Sand) has landed a role on the ABC dramedy No Ordinary Family, which should take her character to the end of the season. Her role, which hasn't been given a name yet, will be a possible adversary for the Powell family, the newbie superheroes of the show. Whether Lawless will be a nuisance to their 'ordinary' life or their 'no ordinary' life is still up in the air, but who else is better to go face to face with Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz than one of the baddest women on TV?
Lawless's appearance on the show will consist of "at least five episodes," according to TVLine, but...

Given the success of "The Walking Dead", it was only a matter of time before other networks jumped on the flesh-eating bandwagon. Enter The CW and its new show "Awakening".
According to Deadline the network just made a late spec script purchase with "Awakening", a zombie drama described as "The Walking Dead" for young females, from Canadian writer-producers William Laurin and Glenn Davis (The Listener). Going after a spec so late in the game usually means that the network has a potential pilot order in mind, but for now The CW is not going that far with "Awakening", which centers on two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising.
Before you all start going on about the whole "young female" thing, remember "Supernatural" was kind of pitched that way, too, and it delivers some of TV's best horror each week.
