You’ve got to feel sorry for the fine folks at the San Diego Comic-Con. The Covid-19 pandemic shut the popular convention down in 2020, and it was forced into holding a much smaller convention – the “Comic-Con Special Edition” – in November 2021 after being unable to host its normal summertime pop culture event safely. Sdcc returned in 2022, but with strict Covid protocols in place.
2023 was thought to be the year the San Diego Comic-Con would spring back to life. But that wasn’t in the cards. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike, which meant many panel participants wouldn’t be able to attend. And then complicating matters, the Screen Actors Guild voted to authorize a strike if they couldn’t come to an agreement with the Alliance of Motion...

It’s not unusual to see a musical based on a movie or TV show or even a comic. But “Rogers: The Musical” might be the first one created from a throwaway joke in a TV show spun-off from a film series based on comic books. Audiences can now check out the mini-musical, which runs about a tight half hour, at Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater, through Aug. 31. I was lucky enough to witness the opening performance last week, followed by a panel discussion with some of the key creatives.
“Rogers” first came to life in the Disney+ show “Hawkeye,” in which Jeremy Renner’s titular Avenger finds himself taking in a Broadway show with his kids. The show hits a little too close to home, as it turns out to be an adaptation of the life of his friend Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America. The show...

Even though “The Boys” Season 3 streamed almost a year ago in June-July of 2022, this is my friendly reminder to TV academy members that it’s eligible for the upcoming 2023 Emmy Awards. “The Boys” is a classic example of a television show that continues to build momentum year after year, and it shouldn’t be discounted when marking your ballots in the coming months. After all, the third season was better than ever with new characters, deathly twists and naughty orgies.
The first season of the Amazon Prime Video comic book adaptation only nabbed a single Emmy nomination in 2020 for sound editing. But the show rebounded in 2021 with five bids for Season 2: drama series, writing (Rebecca Sonnenshine for “What I Know”), music & lyrics (Christopher Lennertz and Michael Saltzman for “Never Truly Vanish”), sound mixing and visual effects. After taking off the 2022 Emmy cycle, will “The Boys” be back in town...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is obsessed with Captain America and it always has been. Even though the Joe Biden lookalike bid his superhero friends farewell 10 whole movies ago, he's somehow always top of mind — whether it's Sam Wilson struggling to follow in his footsteps or Peter Parker attempting murder atop Cap's giant fallen shield from the Statue of Liberty. But by far, the greatest tribute to America's Ass was the dazzling musical that took fictional Broadway by storm in the Disney+ series "Hawkeye." So if you haven't been able to shake the memory of "Rogers: The Musical" from your brain, then prepare to celebrate some very good news: Steve Rogers will officially take center stage in his own one-act musical!
Disney Parks announced the news via Twitter, sharing a brief teaser video and writing, "A short one-act musical is coming for a limited time this summer to Disney California Adventure Park!

Of all the characters on the Amazon Prime series "The Boys," Annie January (aka Starlight) is perhaps the most complex. Based on a character from the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, we first meet the young heroine as she auditions for a spot in The Seven, the premier team of superheroes sponsored by Vought International. As her superhero moniker implies, Starlight has the ability to harness the energy around her and channel it into energy blasts from her raised palms. With an outlook as bright as her costume, Annie has always wanted to save the world and becomes frustrated when critics read this starry-eyed hopefulness as naive.
In three seasons, Annie has come a long way from the innocent young woman who jumps at the chance to join The Seven. Quickly realizing that the leaders of Vought are soulless capitalists more interested in the bottom line than saving anyone,...

The sixth episode of “The Boys” Season 3, titled “Herogasm,” went viral for all the reasons you’d expect, as it featured a superhero orgy sequence that soon climaxed into violence. As costume designer Michael Ground explains in Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, “I designed probably 30 orgy-centric super suits” for that episode. “That was probably a four-month process of illustrations. For that, we did design all the masks, all the gauntlets, all the armor and everything else — we just didn’t have to do the bodies of it all.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Ground continues on, “When you’re working in that kind of a situation, it’s just making sure that people are comfortable and they’re covered where they need to be covered, and we’re showing what they’re comfortable showing, and just to bring the entertainment for the audience.” He notes how viewers...

Amazon’s superhero series “The Boys” got a little more super(natural) in its Season 3 debut on Friday with the introduction of Jensen Ackles to the cast in the role of Soldier Boy. His arrival on the series marked a reunion for Ackles and “The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke, as Kripke is also the creator of The CW’s “Supernatural,” which starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers Dean and Sam Winchester throughout its 15-season run.
So now that Ackles has made his way from one Kripke show to another, is there any chance we’ll see his on-screen brother drop by for a cameo either in the currently airing third season or the yet-to-be-picked-up-but-definitely-a-safe-bet Season 4?
“I would love a Jared cameo! He’s always welcome on the show,” Kripke told Variety. “Up to now, the guy is on a network show that has however many episodes — like, a lot more than eight.

Not so long ago, composers doing “genre” material — horror, science fiction, fantasy — saw an Oscar or Emmy nomination as a longshot, namely because voters didn’t seem to take those projects seriously.
But times have changed. Six of the 11 nominees in Emmy’s two narrative-fiction music categories have some element of sci-fi, fantasy or horror, in addition to two of the nominated songs, two main-title themes and four of the music supervision nominees.
Why the turnabout? Variety asked several of this year’s music nominees for their thoughts, and each offered a slightly different answer.
“When you talk about awards recognition, a lot of the time it’s really about what’s in the collective consciousness,” says TV Academy music governor Jeff Russo (“Fargo”). “Genre films and television shows have been at the top of the collective consciousness for a number of reasons: The types of stories being told are escapism,...

Streaming has obviously changed the game in many ways, one of which is the prevalence of the “skip credits” option. Nearly every streaming services gives viewers the choice to skip opening credits, and then at the end of the episode, it automatically loads the next one instead of letting the end credits roll or promotes a new program if it’s the end of a series or film. For composers, whose work is typically showcased over the credits, it’s not exactly ideal.

When it comes to parody songs, “Never Truly Vanish” from “The Boys” is definitely up there. “I will say it probably is one of the best dramatic uses of a power ballad of all time because you don’t get a chance often to write a power ballad for a dead superhero that blew up with an internally inserted explosion,” Christopher Lennertz, who earned an Emmy nomination for co-writing the tune with Michael Saltzman, tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Btl Experts: Composers panel (watch above).
A full-stop power ballad that is perfect for karaoke, “Never Truly Vanish” is performed by Starlight (Erin Moriarty) at Translucent’s (Alex Hassell) funeral in the Season 2 premiere in tribute to the fallen superhero. The TV Academy music branch is clearly not impressed by big names.
None of the superstars who entered the 2020-21 Emmy competition in the music categories — including H.E.R., Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Sara Bareilles, Dolly Parton and Cher — were rewarded Wednesday when the 73rd annual Emmy Award nominations were announced.
Rather, the majority of nominees in the seven music categories were largely familiar composers, songwriters, music directors and music supervisors within the scoring community.
The biggest musical names nominated were Marcus Mumford for the theme for “Ted Lasso,” Grammy president-ceo Harvey Mason Jr. for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” jazzman Branford Marsalis for a History Channel documentary, two-time Oscar winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for their hummable songs for “WandaVision,” and Tony winner Marc Shaiman for a song on a YouTube special.

Composers Atli Örvarsson, Mark Mothersbaugh and Mark Isham led the list of winners announced Monday for the annual BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards, with the three scorers picking up six, five and four trophies, respectively.
Örvarsson, the Icelandic composer, is now up to 29 BMI honors with the six he adds this week. His new shelf’s worth of awards came for work on “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire,” “FBI,” “FBI: Most Wanted” and “Defending Jacob.”
Mark Mothersbaugh, of Devo as well as scoring fame, was five-times rewarded for “Dirty John,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “The Willoughbys,” “The Croods: A New Age” and “Tiger King.”
Mark Isham’s four awards came for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Honest Thief,” “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Togo.”
“I’m not that much of an awards guy, but even I’m impressed — four BMI awards,” Isham said in a taped acceptance speech.

“The Boys” was developed for the screen by writer/director Eric Kripke, based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson as a subversive and wickedly satirical take on corporate America’s obsession with wealth and power. It is a highly entertaining cautionary tale about celebrity worship, materialism, fame and greed, exploring what happens when these revered superheroes abuse their unlimited powers.
Its large ensemble includes stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Chace Crawford, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon and Karen Fukuhara, with Aya Cash and Claudia Doumit joining the cast for season 2.

“It keeps you on your guard and makes you not know what to expect next,” declares composer Christopher Lennertz about how his ambitious score for the second season of Amazon’s action blockbuster “The Boys” subverts expectations, just like the show itself. “That’s what ‘The Boys’ is all about. Season 2 of “The Boys” ends with two of our protagonists in precarious positions: Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) is unknowingly working for a supervillain and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) is dealing with the death of a loved one. Showrunner Eric Kripke doesn’t mince words when he talks about the future of these fan-fave characters. “You should be horribly worried,” he tells me during Gold Derby’s TV Showrunners panel (watch above). “Television writers are cruel and capricious gods and we are going to torture them.”

“I was trying to channel this muscular, overproduced, unapologetically heroic score,” reveals Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Lennertz (“Supernatural”) about his work on “The Boys.” “There’s no subtlety in it. It’s as stereotypically heroic as you can get.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lennertz above.

In “The Boys,” real life superheroes are revered as celebrity gods keeping the community safe. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, it was developed for Amazon Prime Video by Eric Kripke and stars Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Antony Starr, Elisabeth Shue and Chace Crawford. The comedy satire action drama hybrid explores what happens when these heroes go rogue and abuse their powers, telling a highly entertaining cautionary tale about celebrity worship, materialism, fame and greed.

When Hughie suffers a devastating loss at the hands of a reckless Supe his devastation turns to outrage when he discovers there is no legal recourse for victims of collateral superhero damage. While still reeling from his trauma Hughie meets a mysterious operative, Billy Butcher, who recruits him to join in his pursuit of some vigilante justice against the Supes—who are not exactly what they seem.
“The Boys” is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven, and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes and covers up all of their dirty secrets. The son of the legendary Isaac Hayes is upset that there are no original Hayes tracks in the new “Shaft” movie, calling its soundtrack album “a cultural disaster.”
New Line Cinema, which made the movie — starring Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree and Jessie T. Usher as three generations of the Shaft family — insists that there is Hayes music all over the movie and soundtrack, even if no original tracks were licensed from the Hayes estate.
Isaac Hayes won a Best Song Oscar for his “Shaft” theme, written in 1971 for the original movie with Roundtree as a Harlem private eye. His score was also nominated, won two Grammys and launched an entire genre of blaxploitation movie soundtracks including Curtis Mayfield’s “Super Fly” and Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man.”
Hayes contributed a song to the 1972 sequel, “Shaft’s Big Score,” and re-recorded his original theme for director John Singleton’s 2000 reboot of the series with Jackson.

For a disposable piece of children’s entertainment that features Pit Bull as the voice of a one-eyed, party-mad puppy named Ugly Dog, there’s something refreshingly straightforward about how “UglyDolls” goes about its agenda. At no point in its mercifully brief running time does this colorful pop confection pretend that it’s anything more than an 88-minute commercial for an innocuous brand of plush toys, and for that we should be grateful. Sure, it’s not as psychedelic as “Trolls,” nor as impressive a monument to the mediocrity of late capitalism as “The Angry Birds Movie,” but at a time when the typical animated movie spends $100 million trying to exhaust its young audience into submission, it’s kinda nice to see one that costs half that much, and tries half as hard.

A cappella group Pentatonix is all in for “UglyDolls’” message of embracing what makes one different.
Scott Hoying, one of five group members, told Variety at the “Ugly Dolls” red carpet when asked why they were attracted to providing a song for the soundtrack, “We love animated films and the message of the film is just so beautiful. Being different is cool. And all five of us are very different.”
Pentatonix covers the hit Hall & Oates song “You Make My Dreams.” “We love that song,” said group member Kristin Maldonado at L.A. Live Saturday.
The animated film’s director Kelly Asbury seemed to be on the same page with the a cappella group. “When someone leaves the theater, I hope they’re a little kinder to themselves and to other people,” said Asbury.

Two major performance-rights organizations announced this week the launch of workshops designed to aid up-and-coming film and TV composers: Ascap, for film scoring; and Bmi, for conducting.
Both are multi-week events for which hundreds apply annually, and the two will culminate in live recording sessions at Los Angeles area studios later this month.
Ascap began its 30th annual Film Scoring Workshop today, with Emmy-winning composer Richard Bellis as mentor and Ascap film and TV executives Michael Todd and Jennifer Harmon producing.
It’s a comprehensive, four-week program that has proven a launching pad for many composers in the past, including Jim Dooley (“Pushing Daisies”), Rob Duncan (“Castle”), Matthew Margeson (the “Kingsman” movies), Cliff Martinez (“Drive”), Mateo Messina (“Juno”) and Austin Wintory (“Journey”).
This year’s 12 composers — chosen from nearly 400 applicants — include Shaun Crawford of Cape Town, South Africa; Damien Lane of Cambewarra, Australia; Kyle Laporte of Playa Del Rey, Calif.

Emotion and melody propel the “Star Trek Discovery” and “Lost in Space” scores from Jeff Russo and Christopher Lennertz. (The soundtracks are available from Lakeshore Records.) Of course, they’re nostalgic in paying homage to their predecessors, but they offer their own sense of grandeur and distinctive grace notes in underscoring topical adventures about inclusion and diversity.
In “Discovery,” Sonequa Martin-Green stars as Science Specialist Michael Burnham, a human raised by Vulcans, who provides a complex dynamic with superiors and subordinates. And, in “Lost in Space,” the new twist of a bi-racial Judy (Taylor Russell), empathetic Robot, and female Dr. Smith (Parker Posey) make the series more topical, compelling, and unpredictable.
Discovering Compassion in “Star Trek”
Emmy winner Russo (“Fargo”) was fascinated by the emphasis on compassion in exploring the various inter-relationships. “Discovery” takes place a decade before the original series and focuses on the Federation-Klingon war. However, unlike its predecessors,...

Some of the most compelling music for television these days is being written for science-fiction and fantasy shows, where the sound palette ranges from orchestral arrangements to eerie vocals and synthesizers, and reflects a wide spectrums of styles.
Christopher Lennertz, who recorded a 53-piece orchestra in London’s Abbey Road for the Netflix reboot of “Lost in Space,” says the music he produced is “testosterone-driven when it needs to be, but it’s very poignant when it comes to the kids and the family.
I didn’t want to hold back on the emotion, the heroism, the sadness, romance or hope.”
Lennertz incorporated a snippet of John Williams’ theme from the original ‘60s series, a nice tip of the hat to today’s most respected film composer back when he was still toiling in TV.
Similarly, Jeff Russo found that he could not launch CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery...

With every reboot of a classic TV series, the producers face a key question: Reprise the musical theme of the old show or go for an entirely new sound appropriate to a new cast and concept?
Zack Estrin, executive producer of Netflix’s “Lost in Space,” available for streaming on April 13, chose the former, with a twist. “We’re maintaining the core spirit of the show — this great family survival adventure — and along with the rights to the show came this incredible trove of original John Williams compositions,” he says. “We wanted you to feel like you were in a great Steven Spielberg experience of a movie, and what better way to feel that than to have a hint of John Williams?”

Blame it on 21 Jump Street. In 2012, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller rebooted a silly, cult television series with a clever wink. It was a hit that spawned a hit sequel. Now we have Baywatch, directed by Seth Gordon, a not-so-clever adaptation of an ultra-silly television series that got popular in the 90s. Dwayne Johnson stars as Mitch Buchannon, the studly leader of Baywatch, the world’s most elite lifeguard crew. Filling out his batch of loyal Baywatch-ers are Stephanie Holden (Ilfenesh Hadera), Cj Parker (Kelly Rohrbach), Summer Quinn (Alexandra Daddario), Ronnie (Jon Bass) and Matt Brody (Zac Efron), a disgraced Olympian forced to fulfill his community service with the team.
There are drugs on the beach and it’s on Mitch and co. to get to the bottom of things. But, also not really. It’s actually a job for the police, as the screenplay (from, take a deep breath,...

In case you didn’t notice last week, a number of categories had their ranks thinned out by the Academy. Well, in that regard, I’m here to help. Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. Those will be listed in just a moment, but definitely study these lists, as there are Oscar hints to be found within. For now though, these are just the remaining titles fighting it out for nominations. Take a look and be sure to see how it all impacts predictions going forward. Below you will see the 145 films in Original Score that are still eligible, the 91 tunes in Original Song, and the nine in Foreign Language Feature that remain in play. There were no real Song snubs, but notably Score has eliminated presumed nominee Arrival,...

Alan Menken is far from being a newcomer at the Oscars, but this year the composer could be nominated or even win for a venture into the new territory of R-rated films. Having usually created award-worthy songs for Disney, Menken connected himself with a more mature project with Sausage Party and stands to win an Oscar for a song in a movie about weenies and buns.
This year Sausage Party’s “The Great Beyond” (which would be shared with Chris Lennertz for the animated venture written by and starring Seth Rogen) is considered a major threat in the best original song race, according to this site’s namesake Scott Feinberg. In the past, Menken has been nominated a grand total of 19 times with eight of those being wins. Let’s take a look back at what...
