RoboCop became both a blockbuster and a controversial critical darling upon its release in 1987 due to a mix of jet black humor and as subtle as a jackhammer social commentary sticking a perfect landing. Its success was a surprise to an industry that had looked at Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner’s original script with its simplistic one-word comic book title and assumed it was fated to be a high-concept stinker.

Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film RoboCop has withstood the test of time. A whip-smart satire of the police industrial complex and capitalism, it has a unique and grimy flavor that’s rarely been replicated. And the premise of normal police officer Alex Murphy being turned into an unstoppable crime-stopping machine has an appeal that feels tailor made for video games. Years have passed and the RoboCop franchise has received numerous video game adaptations that range from arcade side scrollers to fighting games. Yet none have captured the feeling of the original film and the balance of style and substance it carried. None have ever made the player truly feel like a one-man war on crime in the streets of Detroit. None have ever really felt like RoboCop.
I’m wildly pleased to say that RoboCop: Rogue City changes all of that.

A good franchise is hard to kill. Bad ones, like the seven-film torture device Police Academy, can be even harder to exterminate. But sometimes doomed series are finally put out of their misery. Up on the shelf they go, doomed to a future of languishing on lists like this one.
The murder weapon is usually money. More specifically, the lack thereof. A big enough failure means a franchise won’t get another chance to pull their act together, and the most spectacular bombs get to live on as warnings to future film students. Even more interesting are the ones that aren’t total flops, the movies that maybe made a profit, but one so small or negligible that their studios decided to put that old franchise to bed, anyway. Here are 15 movies that killed their respective franchises for good.

"RoboCop" was a hot favorite on the school playground when I was a kid. Stories of brutal cop killings and boardroom bloodbaths joined the head-popping scene from "Scanners" and the gruesome exploits of Freddy Krueger as the kind of viewing choice that separated the cool kids from the rest of us. Or at least, separated those who had access to their parents' video rental card from those who didn't.
I caught up with it again several years ago after a gap of about two decades, going in expecting a blast of pure '80s nostalgia. I got a blast alright, but there was nothing sentimental about it. Seeing it again as an adult made me realize that "RoboCop" isn't just a fun movie, it's a great one. Paul Verhoeven directs the hell out of it and there is plenty of substance and style to go with the over-the-top action.

Pierce Brosnan seems to have had several notable false starts in his career. In what might be an infamous story, Brosnan was to play James Bond in the 1987 film "The Living Daylights" right after production was set to wrap on the fourth, and presumed final, season of his modestly successful TV series, "Remington Steele." The story goes that "Steele" was to be replaced by the Fred Dryer cop show "Hunter," freeing up Brosnan to step into the high-profile role of 007 and his co-star Stephanie Zimbalist to take the role of Anne Lewis in Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop" (the part that would eventually taken by Nancy Allen). Ironically, Brosnan signing onto play James Bond saw a sudden new wave of interest in "Remington Steele," and NBC unexpectedly renewed the show for a fifth season. As Brosnan told the Irish Times:
"I'd done all the photos with the iconic gun pose. And...

Alex Murphy's partner in Jose Padilha's "RoboCop" remake is close to being cast, and the character could be played by... Michael Kenneth Williams?
Color us curious about this deviation from Paul Verhoeven's original movie. In that film, Nancy Allen played Murphy's partner Anne Lewis, and their non-romantic relationship provided much of the film's heart. But The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Williams' character would "play the partner to [Joel] Kinnaman’s police officer Alex Murphy who is tight with Murphy’s family," making it the biggest change from the reboot's source material.
That means it will likely be Abbie Cornish's role as Murphy's wife that will be the main female character in the movie. Presumably she'll be a bit more present in this film than Murphy's wife was in Verhoeven's take. Recently cast Jennifer Ehle could also get the honor, though we don't know much about her character "Liz Kline.

Or whatever they end up calling Robocop’s partner in MGM’s upcoming reboot, it probably won’t be Officer Anne Lewis, since the actor currently in negotiations to saddle up with the future of law-enforcement cyborg is “Boardwalk Empire’s” Michael Kenneth Williams. He, uh, does not exactly fit the Anne Lewis mold. Williams, who counts stints on “The Philanthropist” and “Community” among his credits, is currently in talks to play “the partner…who is tight with [Alex] Murphy’s family.” Alex Murphy, of course, is the hotshot Detroit city cop who gets gunned down on the job, and is resurrected as an unstoppable, well, robot cop. Williams will join a cast that already includes Joel Kinnaman as the titular hero, with Hugh Laurie as the man who will menace him and Detroit. Also in the cast are Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul, Gary Oldman as a scientist,...

"Boardwalk Empire" actor Michael Kenneth Williams is in negotiations to join the cast of the upcoming "RoboCop" reboot. He will play Alex Murphy's partner who is close with his family. In the original 1987 film, Murphy's partner was an officer named Anne Lewis, who was played by Nancy Allen. With the announcement of Williams casting, it seems that the partner role has completely been re-written. "RoboCop" is directed by Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) and stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Laurie, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel and Jennifer Ehle. It's set to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Kenneth Williams is in negotiations to join the already very impressive cast of Jose Padilha's remake of '80s sci-fi classic Robocop. The site report that "Williams will play the partner to Kinnaman’s police officer Alex Murphy who is tight with Murphy’s family.". This would suggest that his character will replace Officer Anne Lewis, Murphy/Robocop's partner and only friend, played so memorably by Nancy Allen in the original. Williams' most famous role was that of gay stick-up-man Omar Little in the HBO series, The Wire. He also plays Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire.

Other roles in James Vanderbilt's (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Losers, Zodiac, Welcome To The Jungle) script remaining shrouded in secrecy. The man who knows all — aside from Vanderbilt, naturally — is director José Padilha, the Rio-born, Oxford-educated director of Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within,...

"House" star Hugh Laurie is in negotiations to join the cast of the upcoming "RoboCop" remake. He'll play the villainous CEO of Omni Corp, which creates the title character for its own gain. Gary Oldman is set to co-star as the scientist who creates RoboCop (Joel Kinnaman), while Samuel L. Jackson has also signed on to play a patriotic media mogul. Abbie Cornish will play his conflicted wife, a role described as a female lead, which hints that the film may not have Alex Murphy's former partner Anne Lewis. The new movie is directed by Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) and will begin shooting this summer for an August 9th, 2013 release.

The casting for Jose Padilha’s “Robocop” reboot is moving pretty full steam lately. After casting Gary Oldman as Robo’s creator, then Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul, the casting now turns to Alex Murphy’s wife. Word has the gorgeous Abbie Cornish (of “Sucker Punch” fame) being offered the role. Joel Kinnaman of “The Killing” will play Murphy, the hotshot Detroit City cop in a near future who gets himself blown all to hell. A corporation called Ocp then steps in and uses Murphy as the prototype for a new crime-fighting machine called Robocop. After a while, though, the man behind the machine starts exerting himself. Up next for the “Robocop” casting — Officer Anne Lewis. The character was played by Nancy Allen in the three original films. You can’t have a Robocop without an Anne Lewis. That’s like having a Starbuck with boobies.

The best way to convince us that a "RoboCop" remake is totally necessary is line up an awesome cast for it, and MGM is doing just that. Hot off the news that Samuel L. Jackson has joined the film as a "charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world," the studio has seemed to have found itself a female lead as well.
Deadline is reporting that Abbie Cornish is currently in talks for a big role in the movie. But instead of playing Alex Murphy's former partner Anne Lewis, who was the most important female character in the original "RoboCop," Cornish is in talks to play Murphy's wife.

The Fringe is a place where non-horror genre films can get some play on Shock. These films might be sci-fi, fantasy or action - and certainly contain some horror elements - but will likely be light on scares, or, straight-up "horror." Still, they might be of interest to you.
It seems MGM isn't playing around with their new RoboCop film. They're already got Joel Kinnaman playing Alex Murphy with Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson set to accompany him. When we first read that Abbie Cornish was in talks to join the Robocop reboot, we had visions of her donning body armour and a police helmet to play Alex Murphy’s partner, Anne Lewis. Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of MGM’s upcoming “RoboCop” remake.
He will play Pat Novak, a powerful media mogul and character that was not in the original so little is known about him at this stage. The coup of Jackson though is a significant one, another impressive bit of casting after it was announced that Gary Oldman will play a scientist named ‘Norton’ in the film, who helps create RoboCop.
Joel Kinnaman who is leading as Alex Murphy/RoboCop recently made some comments directed at fans who are worried about the remake;
“I used to be like “Why are we doing a remake? What are remakes being done for?” But then, we do that all the time in the theater. If we weren’t doing remakes, nobody would know who Shakespeare was, I’m not saying that RoboCop is Shakespeare, but that’s what we do as human beings.

With little known about it other than an expectation that every review of this movie will include the word "gritty," the "RoboCop" reboot has loomed over us for months but without much information. With Jose Padilha at the helm (a director who's no stranger to action and police corruption as seen in his "Elite Squad" films) and screenwriter Nick Schenk ("Gran Torino") on board the project, the film has plenty of potential for an awesome adaptation. But unless it finds the perfect blend of action, allegory, and camp that Paul Verhoeven concocted, there is plenty of potential to fall flat.
That's why we're here to help. Keep reading for ways to properly reboot "RoboCop" for a new age!

According to reports, MGM's upcoming "RoboCop" reboot, to be directed by José Padilha, is moving forward with a new screenplay by Nick Schenk ("Gran Torino"), targeting a Summer 2012 start.
"I have my take on it," said Padilha. "How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how do you program a brain, so to speak, and how does that affect an individual?"
Padilha wants actor Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: First Class") to play "Murphy', aka 'RoboCop'.

...which begs the question: do more men get late career boosts than women? Tarantino dug up Travolta and Forster -and others besides - for nostalgia-fuelled resurrections (Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown). And Sly,...

Sundance favorite and World Cinema Grand Jury nominee Four Lions will close the 2010 SXSW Film Festival on Saturday, March 20. The UK film was co-written, directed, and stars Chris Morris.
Other “festival favorites” include Waking Sleeping Beauty, a behind-the-scenes documentary about Disney animation from 1984 to 1994 directed by Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn, and Tony, a Slamdance selection and psychological thriller about a serial killer.
Skateland, starring Ashley Green, is also getting another look from festival goers, as well as the raved-about short film from Spike Jonze titled I’m Here. Plus a Doors documentary narrated by Johnny Depp. I’ll be reviewing and covering as many of these films as I can.
Below is a full list of the additional titles screening at the film festival, which runs from March 12th through the 20th in Austin, Texas.
