Daphne, Glory also scoop prizes.
Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country has won the top prize at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The well-received drama, which premiered in Sundance and had its UK premiere in Edinburgh, took the Michael Powell Award for best British feature film.
The prize was awarded by a jury consisting of composer David Arnold, International Film Festival Rotterdam artistic director Bero Beyer, and Bafta-nominated film and television writer Andrea Gibb.
The jury commented: “We present the Michael Powell Award to God’s Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, a film with a singularity of storytelling and consistency of vision. Assured direction with raw and endearing performances result in a film that has an authenticity that is both tender and brutal, a juxtaposition of landscape and emotion, which explores the question of what it means to be a man.”

In Dennis Bartok’s debut horror flick, Shauna Macdonald is an injured athletics coach who learns the hideous secret of the hospital in which she is a patient
Writer-director Dennis Bartok’s mildly diverting debut horror film is a cheerfully derivative exercise in jump scares, dark shadows and low-budget-driven aesthetics. In Dublin, hyper-fit athletics coach Dana (Shauna Macdonald) is hit by a car while out running. She wakes up with a respirator in her throat and serious injuries in a spooky hospital that hardly seems to have any patients, even though her nurse, Trevor (comedian Ross Noble), complains bitterly about being overworked.
As Dana slowly recovers and learns to use a laptop to communicate with her caregivers, husband (Steve Wall), and teen daughter (Leah McNamara), she learns about the hospital’s hideous secret: years ago, a nurse there killed children, died and then seemingly transmogrified into a variant on internet-meme-turned-urban-myth Slender Man,...

Sometimes it’s psychological. Sometimes it’s visceral. It can be a masked killer’s twisted pastime. A labyrinth our poor heroes must find their way out of. Perhaps a nasty round of torture by the Big Bad. Whatever it is, the sick feeling of impending doom overcomes us as we realize the characters might not make it out alive. Sometimes they can think their way through. Sometimes they can fight. But when the exits are closed and the madman decides to get creative, all bets are off.

Danger Mouse is back! This slick, self-aware, modern revival boasts plenty of action and jokes...
It’s been over a year since the BBC announced it was remaking Danger Mouse, a show which has a special place in the hearts of a generation of children. Understandably, there’ve been nerves; can Danger Mouse thrive without David Jason and Terry Scott? Will the new team stick with what made the show great in the first place? Is there a place for Danger Mouse on television today? Will this ruin childhoods?
Based on the first episode of the revived series, the answer to all of those questions is tentatively ‘yes’. Except that last one; as we’ve said before on this site, even the worst remake can’t have any genuine impact on your childhood. And, happily, Danger Mouse is far from being the worst remake.

WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films
Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

I don't know what Canadian filmmakers eat for breakfast, but they seem to excel in making romantic comedies. These are the first ones that come to my mind: Young People Fucking, Love and Magnets and Dodging the Clock. Now, comes Kris Booth's At Home by Myself... with You, a smart film that combines comedy and drama.
Meet Romy Scott (Kristin Booth), a woman who has developed some phobias because of traumatic events in childhood and adolescence. She's afraid of the storm, getting outside, kissing, lobsters and opening boxes. As a result of that, she's never left her apartment since she was 24 years old. In order to pay her bills, this woman from Toronto works in her apartment as a self-employed travel agent. Moreover, Romy seeks the help of either of her neighbours - Erin (Shauna MacDonald) and Bessie (Rosemary Dunsmore) - to perform tasks like opening boxes for her.

It's undeniably the most hotly anticipated horror movie of the coming year -- from the makers of the original "Descent" and "Eden Lake"! The French get to see it on October 14! Director Jon Harris was the editor for the incredible "Eden Lake." Distraught, confused, and half-wild with fear, Sarah Carter (Shauna MacDonald) emerges alone from the Appalachian cave system where she encountered unspeakable terrors. Unable to plausibly explain to the authorities what happened - or why she's covered in her friends' blood - Sarah is forced back to the subterranean depths to help locate her five missing companions. As the rescue party drives deeper into uncharted caverns, nightmarish visions of the recent past begin to haunt Sarah and she starts to realize the full horror and futility of the mission. Subjected to the suspicion and mistrust of the group and confronted once more by the inbred, feral and savagely ruthless Crawlers,...

I mean, sure, she’s hot and all, but come on, she’s coming at me with a syringe and her dress is made of syringes. That’s pretty creepy. Then again, she is pretty hot, so… Nah, yeah, I would run.
