Sibi Malayil Reveals Reasons for Backing Out Of Kamal Haasan’s Gunaa(Photo Credit –Wikipedia/IMDb)
In a recent interview with the New Indian Express, veteran filmmaker Sibi Malayil opened up about his failed collaboration with Kamal Haasan for his Tamil debut in ‘Gunaa.’ Despite the renewed interest in Kamal’s film, particularly referenced in the recent Malayalam hit ‘Manjummel Boys,’ Sibi shared insights into why he ultimately decided to pass on the opportunity to direct the project.
Sibi discussed their failed collaboration from the 90s, initially planned as a Tamil movie produced by Raj Kamal Films International’s manager Dns. The concept focused on a commercial film about the Indian Peace Keeping Force (Ipkf) in Sri Lanka. Still, Kamal dropped the idea due to its controversial nature, exacerbated by Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

ReviewAbhilash Joshiy’s ‘King of Kotha’ is teeming with ambition to put the Malayalam film industry on the pan-Indian map, but is imitation the way to go?Sibi Malayil’s Kireedam, which came out in 1989, was about an aspiring policeman who ends up becoming a gangster due to circumstances. King of Kotha, directed by Abhilash Joshiy, is a period gangster flick that’s set in the same decade, but you won’t find anything common between the two films – not even the shirt styles of the gangsters. And that’s the tragedy of our time. In the rush to make films that will appeal to everyone, we make films that are about no one. Kotha is a coastal town with a drug problem, and Circle Inspector Shahul Hassan (Prasanna) is transferred to the town to take care of it. The kingpin is Kannan ‘bhai’, played by a formidable Shabeer Kallarakkal.

BooksThe actor who passed away last week, made people laugh on and off screen for decades and had lots to say about Kozhikode, its people, and life.It is difficult to think of Mamukkoya without that famous accent of his. In all his films and the lines he is frequently quoted from, the late actor spoke the Kozhikode Malayalam, where nammal (we) became njammal and nenaku (you) turned into anakku. Thaha Madayi, writing Mamukkoya’s memoirs as told to him, would not have wanted to change a syllable. Reading them days after his death, picturing him with folded legs on a chair and narrating the stories of his life, brings an ache. But the words throw a new light around this man, who lived up to 76 and made people laugh on and off screen for decades. “We must raise our children as artists. There is no communalism in art. A...

FilmsEach era has been witness to new waves in Malayalam cinema. But have themes and storytelling techniques ever been as novel as they are now?Image for representation / Courtesy PxfuelEight years ago, when we were watching Premam in the now-defunct Sri Visakh theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, my mother and my seven-year-old nephew both sat with gloomy faces. The seven-year-old wrapped the end of my shawl around him, choosing to drown his gloom in sleep. His grandmother stayed awake, straining to follow what the younger lot in the audience appeared to enjoy so much. It was not that she did not like the film, but that she could hardly make out what was being told. In the last decade or so, when movies in Malayalam rolled out in all different hues and forms, many things happened. Audiences, who had in the decade before that chose to stick to their television sets and give the theatres a miss,...

MollywoodThe Shaji Kailas era in Malayalam cinema gave leverage to the emergence of the bombast-spouting alpha male heroes on screen. At a time when flawed, sensitive male characters are finding space on the screen, where do his alpha male heroes feature? Neelima MenonThe word is that filmmakers of the older generation from Sibi Malayil, Sathyan Anthikad, and Kamal to Lal Jose, are all struggling to make an impact, with their cinematic graphs showing a decline in the last 10 years. Among them is Shaji Kailas, one of the most successful mainstream filmmakers in Malayalam cinema, who had been in self-imposed exile for a long time since 2013 after his Malayalam film, Ginger (2013), a comedy headlining Jayaram, sank without a trace. Now 9 years later, when Malayalam cinema is chasing newer narratives, milieus, and subverting cliches and stereotypes, Shaji Kailas re-emerged with Kaduva, a story set in the ’90s, headlining an alpha male hero...

ReviewThe film, directed by Sibi Malayil, has good performances but ends up stereotyping Kannur.CrisKotthu, the new Malayalam film by Sibi Malayil, jumps straight to the point with its opening scene. A man is chased and stabbed to death by four others. His body is laid at the Communist party office, and a photo hung with a red garland over it. He has turned into a martyr, taking the hit for the party. The intro becomes a preview of what the film is going to be about: the party workers of the lower rung, who turn into murderers and martyrs, not the leaders. It does not use ‘star’ moments or mass dialogues, in trying to stick with the common man’s tale. Only, in telling a political story, it lacks originality and has little new to offer from what Malayalam movies have presented decade after decade. It casts a critical...

Mollywood Not only is cinema the most accessible form of art, it has also proven to have a profound influence on the public psyche, especially when it comes to shaping perceptions on love and marriage.Neelima MenonThe relationship between popular culture portrayal of social issues and its impact on the society we live in has always been a complex one. But no matter how hard we try, it is impossible to ignore the existence of such a relationship for convenient arguments such as "it's only a film, why take it so seriously!" In this short review, we look at the portrayal of dowry and related domestic violence and its less than desirable representation, rather its status-quo-ist representation in Malayalam cinema through time. In Sathyan Anthikad’s Bhagyadevatha (2009), the hero (Jayaram) decides to get married when he is informed about the prospect of a hefty dowry, ripe enough to help him...

This template has been used and reused so much that when a real and well-etched male character finally comes alive in a rare appearance, it becomes a breath of fresh air. On November 19, International Men’s Day, PopCult, a popular Facebook and instagram page which discusses Malayalam cinema, compiled a list of 9 takeaways from films which have broken away from toxic masculinity and have presented us with very real and vulnerable characters. MollywoodMaking a new imagery for death needs an inspiring script handled with passion by a director, crafted in detail by a cinematographer-sound designer-production designer combo.Screenshot from 'Ee.Ma.Yau'By Prahlad Gopakumar “Death: You won’t get off that easy.” Death has always been a repetitive motif in cinema. The imagery of death is culture specific; it’s always related to the script of the film and thus to the director’s understanding of language and culture. The Hollywood image of a group wearing black suits and dresses standing in an organised manner and giving speeches are alien to Indians. In India, each region, language and state has its own interpretations of death. The objects, locations and the reactions of the actors used to signify the experience are far removed from the Hollywood ‘way’. Making a new imagery for death is different from and more difficult than making something look good.
