While there's no shortage of legal and crime dramas, we certainly aren't going to complain about another series joining the roster.
As far as Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent goes, we're excited to see what this drama will bring us this summer.

It’s not the first moment we meet the show-stealing Danielle Brooks as Sofia in Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaption of “The Color Purple,” but it might as well be, so clearly (so amusingly) does it capture her essence.
Picture this: We’re in Harpo’s (Corey Hawkins) newly built cabin, a home he’s endeavored mightily to make his own, when who should appear? His own fiancée, Sofia, as ebullient and self-assured as any character we meet in the Alice Walker adaptation, who doesn’t just enter her future house, but literally kicks down the door to make her way inside.
It’s Sofia in a nutshell: buoyant, confident, funny, a little crazy, and impossible to ignore. So it’s only fitting that Brooks, who brings Sofia so wonderfully to life in the film, can be thanked for its creation.
“I have so much pride in that moment,” Brooks...

The film adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical arrived in theaters on Christmas Day and has already grossed an impressive $25 million. The new film is the latest step in the story’s journey and provides a new take on Alice Walker’s classic tale that began impacting people’s lives when the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was released in 1982. Since then, Celie’s story has gone from the page to the big screen to Broadway and is now back in cinemas. In the new Max documentary “Oprah & The Color Purple Journey,” premiering on Thursday, Dec. 28, Oprah Winfrey, who was one of the original film’s stars, chronicles the impact that “The color Purple: has had over the past 41 years. Where do you stand on the 1985 film version of “The Color Purple,” which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but won none? Some feel it wasn’t Steven Spielberg’s story to tell. Others marvel at how a director of the upbringing depicted in “The Fabelmans” managed to recognize and reflect so many aspects of Black culture: the music, the spirituality, the multiple catharses to which it builds. Looking back, Spielberg did justice to Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel, but he also left room to expand and improve.
Now, nearly four decades later, a rousing new version arrives from director Blitz Bazawule, who collaborated with Beyoncé on her 2020 visual album “Black Is King.” Instead of rejecting what came before, the Ghanian filmmaker embraces and builds upon it, collaborating with Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey to update the material for the next generation (all three serve as producers). In response to her Golden Globe nomination Monday for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in The Color Purple, Fantasia Barrino starts the conversation with gratitude as she swore, after playing Celie on Broadway in the musical adaptation, she would never play the character again.
“I’ve said in Interviews before that I would never play this role again because of post-traumatic stress, but I am so glad that I didn’t allow fear to stand in my way,” she said after this morning’s nominations were revealed.
Barrino first rose to fame in 2004 when she won the third season of American Idol with her powerful, raspy voice and emotional performances. After releasing her debut song “I Believe,” which later became the fastest-selling single in history by an Idol contestant, she released her first album. It debuted at No. 1 and was certified platinum.

This article contains spoilers through the Manifest series finale.
After keeping viewers captivated since 2018, Manifest finally reached its thrilling conclusion as season 4 part 2 landed on Netflix on Friday. While the series answered most of our burning questions regarding the mystery of Flight 828 and whether passengers could survive the Death Date, it did leave viewers with many questions regarding the show’s arc and whether some deaths were necessary.
For most of the last ten episodes of Manifest, flight 828 passengers found themselves locked in a detention center by the Registry because of public fear and the government wanting to do scientific experiments on them. The passenger’s position in the detention center hindered their ability to solve their callings and figure out what needed to be done to help them survive the Death Date.

[This story contains major spoilers to the finale of Mrs. Davis.]
Mrs. Davis made a promise from the beginning that Simone, the heroic nun at the center of the genre-jumping story played by Betty Gilpin, would destroy the titular algorithm of the series. And after eight wild episodes, the show delivered on that promise.
The finale of the Peacock series from co-creators Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof is titled “The Final Intercut: So I’m Your Horse,” a name that was given by the algorithm created in the writers room to generate episode titles. Finale director Owen Harris thinks the title is genius. “It’s disconnection with the story is what that title is about,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It says pretty much everything...

A former member of improv troupe The Groundlings, she spent a decade bumping around in single-episode, minor-role stints before spending a year as an “SNL” featured player in 2008.
From there, she spent a season on “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” starring opposite another former SNL star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus — who’s now her co-star in...

“Mrs. Davis” will compete for Emmys love in the Limited Series category, but that doesn’t mean the show won’t see a second season.
A source close to the production told TheWrap that creators Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez always intended for Season 1 of the genre-bending series to have a “conclusive and satisfying ending” with the finale episode airing Thursday, May 18. The source added that while discussions on a potential second installment have not started, nothing is off the table.

“Mrs. Davis” may be one of the most surprising and unconventional new series of the spring — and now it’s making a surprising and unconventional move in the Emmy race as well. As the Television Academy deadline for category submissions ends today, Peacock has decided to make a last-minute shift and move the series into the limited/anthology series categories.
Betty Gilpin stars in “Mrs. Davis” as Simone, a sometimes nun who takes on her nemesis, the artificial intelligence being known only as “Mrs. Davis,” and strikes a deal with the algorithm — which promises to shut down if Simone finds and destroys the holy grail. This exploration of faith and technology comes from executive producers Tara Hernandez (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Damon Lindelof (“The Leftovers”).

If you haven’t checked out Peacock‘s darkly funny epic adventure Mrs. Davis, we suggest making it your next TV quest. In the eight-part series from creators Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof, Betty Gilpin plays Simone, a nun on a mission to destroy Mrs. Davis, an omnipresent and seemingly all-knowing AI algorithm that much of the world’s population has plugged into their ears. Simone and Mrs. Davis agree: If Simone can destroy the Holy Grail, Mrs. Davis will shut itself down. A mystical and wildly unpredictable odyssey ensues that travels the globe and spans the ages. Simone’s hunt for the Grail continues in Episode 6, “Alison Treasures: A Southern California Story” (May 4). Simone, Wiley (Jake McDorman), and the Resistance know where to find the Grail, but they’ll need her late father’s (David Arquette) special protective suit, the Lazarus Shroud, to get it. The big problem is that Simone’s mother,...

When Jeff Russo sat down to watch “Mrs. Davis” to score the show, he had the same reaction as you likely did afterward. “I watched that first episode and I was like, ‘Wait. What? What? No amount of turns the world takes around the sun will lessen the intrigue of seeing the title card read, “This is a true story.” Sure, we’ve been burned a few times. By the time the movie or show ended, we were looking at the reflection of ourselves on the screens, feeling like absolute doofuses for taking the bait. But I’m here to assure you that the same is not the case with Love And Death. Although by the time you get through the first three episodes and have already given little bits and pieces of your heart to the people and their lives, chances are, you would wish that they were fictional, and the horrid fate didn’t befall them. Bringing her Wanda mind-palace-esque housewife to the hellish tale of Love And Death, Elizabeth Olsen summons a ray-of-sunshine murderer who wasn’t charged with the murder of her lover’s pregnant wife.

Elizabeth Olsen calls herself an “unemployed” actor — even after playing Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her latest role as Candy Montgomery in the HBO miniseries “Love & Death.”
“I don’t want to work for work’s sake,” she tells Variety. “I don’t know how to half-ass stuff, so I have to love something a lot. And there are things I love, and it’s tough to raise money for them.”
Olsen, 34, has multiple projects she wants to make with some unnamed first-time narrative directors but is finding it difficult to secure the financing that would allow them to have creative control. So, while she continues navigating Hollywood’s grounds during an unsteady economic time and a possible writer’s strike, she says she’s enjoying this break after working three years straight with Marvel (including two years of shooting and one year of promotion). “I don’t miss it,...

“Love & Death” is set to premiere Thursday on HBO Max (soon to be just “Max”) and is expected to be a strong Emmys player for the cable and streaming platform in the limited series races. Elizabeth Olsen’s turn as the unfiltered adulterous Candy Montgomery, along with Jesse Plemons’ performance as the dim-witted and simple churchgoing husband of her friend Betty Gore, are expected to be among the top prospects in the acting races, but not where pundits had initially speculated.
Variety has learned exclusively that Plemons will be submitted for supporting actor in a limited series and not the lead actor race category, which was assumed early on. So, unsurprisingly, Olsen will be the sole leading acting submission for the series.

Without giving away a single favorite thing, Oprah Winfrey brought the house down with a surprise appearance at CinemaCon 2023.
Revelers at the annual convention of movie theater owners were delighted by the mogul’s cameo at Tuesday’s presentation from Warner Bros. Pictures. Winfrey is a producer on the studio’s upcoming movie musical “The Color Purple,” based on the 1985 Steven Spielberg classic in which the former daytime host starred.
“‘The Color Purple’ in 1985 was the biggest and most important thing that happened to me. This is a full circle moment to be part of this film. It holds great personal meaning,” Winfrey told the crowd.
Appearing with director Blitz Bazawule, the pair showed the first footage ever screened from the project — a rousing and lush production that particularly showcased femme fatale Taraji P. Henson.
The film will open this coming Christmas Day, and boasts serious musical and Hollywood star power.

The phrase “if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all” is rarely all that useful when discussing popular entertainment. TV thrives on genre stories, telling seemingly infinite variations of doctor, detective, and demonic procedurals, all without losing the audience’s hard-earned attention. Plus, dismissing any story as nothing more than a carbon copy of what you’ve already seen typically overlooks the craft of good television and/or its evolution. Sure, you could argue if you’ve already seen “Columbo” or “Monk,” then you “get” what “Poker Face” is going to be — but then you’d be dismissing Natasha Lyonne’s smoky star power, Rian Johnson’s deft direction, and the artistic attributes within a smart “howcatchem.”
But when it comes to “Love and Death,” the (not HBO) Max original series from writer/producer David E. Kelley, previously released options prove as plentiful as they are hard to ignore.

Created by Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez, the Peacock series Mrs. Davis is set in a world where an all-knowing artificial intelligence has essentially created world peace. Known by a variety of names around the world, including Mrs. Davis, this A.I. encourages its followers to do tasks for it in order to gain virtual reality “wings.” But not everyone believes that this A.I. is the benevolent savior of humanity it appears to be. A nun named Simone and a secret organization that involves her ex-boyfriend and his best friend become involved in a quest to get rid of Mrs. Davis for good. All they have to do is track down the mythical Holy Grail.
As with most Damon Lindelof series, there’s a lot going on with the characters of Mrs. Davis. While diving too deep into these characters gets into spoiler territory, here’s what we can...

Plot: “Mrs. Davis” is the world’s most powerful Artificial Intelligence. Simone is the nun devoted to destroying Her. Who ya got?
Review: It takes a lot to catch me off guard. I have seen countless movies and television series over the years that have been billed as shocking or revolutionary, game-changing, and even unlike anything that has ever been seen before. Few of these have actually delivered on the hyperbole used to market them, but every now and then, I am truly surprised by the originality that is still possible. Mrs. Davis is one of those series that truly earns the distinction of being unlike anything else ever made. With the distinctive creative talents of Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof behind the scenes, Mrs. Davis echoes the satirical brilliance of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil with a modern technological flair for a hilarious, action-packed story and thought-provoking series about faith,...

The Holy Grail, a character in “Mrs. Davis” observes, might be the “most overused MacGuffin ever.” From “Monty Python” to “Indiana Jones,” the mythical chalice is an easy shorthand for a magical object that motivates heroes and antagonists alike. Sister Simone (Betty Gilpin), a nun who spends her days mak- ing strawberry jam at an abbey outside Reno, is the latest protag- onist to set her sights on the Grail. She’s been assigned this quest by an artificial intelligence known as Mrs. Davis, which marries the menace of Skynet with the affable mien of Alexa. For reasons both principled and personal, Simone despises Mrs. Davis, but she’s been extended an offer she can’t refuse: If she finds the Grail and destroys it, Mrs. Davis will destroy herself. As the same supporting player notes: “Algorithms love clichés, and there’s no cliché bigger than the quest for the Holy Grail.

"Mrs. Davis," the new Peacock series by Damon Lindelof ("Lost") and Tara Hernandez ("The Big Bang Theory"), starts off like the kind of dream you couldn't explain even if you tried. First, there's an order of nuns in the year 1307, locked in a bloody battle with men on the hunt for the Holy Grail. Then, a man on a desert island is rescued, only to be told a rather maternal-sounding algorithm has taken over the world. Next, another weird and bloody scene plays out on the Nevada freeway, only to be interrupted by Simone (Betty Gilpin), a modern-day nun with a penchant for magic tricks. All of this unfolds in the first few minutes of the pilot episode — before we even know who our protagonist is.
The show eventually finds its own absurd inner logic, but its sweeping, funny, deeply strange story never quite shakes the quality of a vivid and endless dream.

The new Peacock series “Mrs. Davis” boasts some unusual sights and sounds: a nun on a motorbike, earpieces feeding communication from a worldwide AI into the mouths of willing human supplicants, a gruesome childhood accident, a horse wired with C4 — and that’s just in the first few of its eight episodes.
But the strangest thing about this ambitious program is how its voice feels like it’s replicating a source material that doesn’t exist. “Mrs. Davis” creates the pervasive feeling that it’s based on a beloved cult comic book; specifically, its particular recipe of big-swing speculative ideas, loopy world-building, and irreverent characters brings to mind non-superhero comics series like “Preacher,” “Y the Last Man,” or “Paper Girls.” But “Mrs. Davis” has no previous incarnation; it’s the original creation of Tara Hernandez (“The Big Bang Theory” and “Young Sheldon”) and “Lost,” “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers” mastermind Damon Lindelof.

True crime stories can be tantalizing, giving us a glimpse into the horrors of humanity from the comfort of our couches. There are tons of true crime documentaries on almost every streaming service, but sometimes we get dramatic retellings that make the monstrosities much more cinematic (and entertaining). When it comes to the case of Candy Montgomery, the suburban Texas housewife who murdered her neighbor with an ax, there are now two star-studded prestige miniseries to tell the tale.

Desperate housewives never got out of style on television, and in “Love & Death,” Elizabeth Olsen is playing a particularly troubled one. The “Wandavision” and “Sorry for Your Loss” actor stars in the final trailer for the HBO Max series, released this Thursday.
In “Love & Death,” Olsen portrays Candy Montgomery, a real-life Texas housewife charged in 1980 for the murder of her friend and neighbor Betty Gore after Gore was found dead in her house from 41 axe wounds. During Montgomery’s trial, it came to light that she was cheating on her husband Pat with Gore’s husband Allan, and she pled self-defense by claiming that Gore attacked her after discovering evidence of the affair. Montgomery was eventually declared not guilty by the jury, in a verdict that prompted outcry from Gore’s family and their small-town community.
