The two-part “30 for 30” documentary on the seminal 1990s competition show “American Gladiators” has now concluded, wrapping up an epic saga that cut right to the core of the American Dream.
The documentary dove deep into the largely unknown history of the show, which dominated the TV landscape in its initial run in syndication on US television and around the world. It revealed stories of love, lust, betrayal, friendship, injury, agony, and everything in between from the creators of the show and the Gladiators themselves.
So how did a nearly three-hour doc about a show famous for events like jousting with things that looked like huge cotton swabs and rolling around in giant steel balls called Atlaspheres come together? According to the doc’s director Ben Berman, he was skeptical when initially approached by Vice about the project but changed his mind once he learned more about the story.

Just because the week is shorter, doesn’t mean that there’s any less stellar programming on the horizon, with new seasons of “I Think You Should Leave,” “Dark Side of the Ring,” “Nancy Drew” and “Painting with John,” plus the series finales of “Barry” and “Succession.” And that’s to say nothing of a ripped-from-the-headlines HBO movie (starring Sydney Sweeney no less), a documentary about the American Gladiators and a LeBron James biopic. A jam-packed week, even with one fewer day!

ESPN has released an exclusive clip from a new two-part documentary that will shed light on the behind-the-scenes story of the famed reality competition show “American Gladiators.”
From 1989 to 1996, “American Gladiators” was one of the most popular syndicated programs in television, a competition show that predated the reality TV era but used many of the same techniques to attract viewers. Every week, “amateur” contestants would go up against a cast of “professional” gladiators in a range of physical competitions, setting up David versus Goliath matchups that were popular with big television audiences but also earned considerable criticism for being “crash TV”.
The documentary, which will debut on May 30 and 31 on ESPN and be made available on ESPN+ following its premiere, features original interviews with Johnny Ferraro, Deron McBee (‘Malibu’), Michael Horton (‘Gemini’), Lynn ‘Red’ Williams (‘Sabre’), the late William Billy Smith (‘Thunder’) and Salina Bartunek (‘Elektra’).
“What we were doing consumed us so much.

Paris Hilton ticked off a lot of people by doing absolutely nothing this weekend.A plane carrying a banner with the heiress' name on it flew over a public memorial for Paul Walker on Sunday -- leading many to comment on Twitter that she was making the actor's death all about her.The message read "Our hearts go out to his friends + family," with a heart and the words "#17 Paris Hilton" also written on it.But while it may seem like Hilton's Mo to go over the top with her condolences, toofab has confirmed she had nothing to do with it.And this isn't the first time her name has appeared in the sky recently either.A couple weeks back, another plane was spotted over Malibu carrying the messages "Can't get Paris Whitney Hilton out of my mind!" and "Mr. and Mrs. Hilton, may I court your daughter, Paris?" Survivor did something a little weird this week. It staged an immunity challenge around what amounted to a game of Toss Across. Is this my high school graduation backyard party? Is the grand prize a Hallmark card and a check from my aunt? It didn’t make for riveting competition, but it did reverse one seriously bleak trend in the game. So that’s nice. Like a Hallmark card!
Here are my noteworthiest takes on Wednesday’s warfare.
1. Vytas’ vytal signs are looking goooood
Thank you, Survivor, for livening up a humdrum episode with… an evocative mood sequence featuring Vytas in shirtless yoga stances for what seemed like months. It was like the gay Portland version of Robert De Niro‘s long-ass hunting scene from The Deer Hunter. So pastoral and eerie and full of handstands and clenched biceps and half-naked bliss and mood. He even philosophized about Brad Culpepper.

According to TMZ, sources close to Lamar Odom have stated that the drug-addicted NBA player wants to sober up — just not in rehab. Khloe Kardashian’s other half reportedly believes in “self healing” and would consider professional help in private. However he (surprisingly) has not yet taken that step. Sources also added that the reason for his desire to clean up is not for his wife but for his NBA career. What a keeper.

New York, Dec 30: Us actress Angie Harmon believes that David Hasselhoff's 4-year campaign to bring the hit show 'Baywatch' back would result in a huge smash if it had a 'Dallas'-style makeover.
The 40-year-old actress, who starred in show's spinoff, 'Baywatch Nights,' felt that Pamela Anderson, Gena Lee Nolin and Carmen Electra should return to the sandy shores of Malibu, the New York Daily News reported.
But she thinks that the cast should be joined by a host of curvaceous twenty something beauties to appeal to a new generation of fans.
Harmon also reckons that Hasselhoff would get back into tip-top shape given.

Once the final ratings for Friday's editions of Last Man Standing and Malibu Country were figured in, the sitcoms dropped down the averages list but they're still doing much better than Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23. That's really bad when you consider Last Man and Malibu air on Friday nights, an evening when viewership is lower. It looks certain that Don't Trust the B will be cancelled.
ABC's Sunday night line-up -- America's Funniest Home Videos, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue -- all had a bad night but those numbers didn't affect the show averages very much. Of course, 666 Park Avenue is still in terrible shape and is still headed for cancellation. At this point, Last Resort has a better chance at survival but both are very likely doomed.

It's finally obvious why Rupert Everett made those horrible comments about gay parents – he has a new book to sell. Still, in some ways I empathize with some of the reasons he's putting forth on kids and marriage. "For me, being gay was about wanting to do the opposite of the straight world, so I think that's where my problems in this particular area come from. For me, personally, the last thing I would like in the entire world would be to go through cocktailing my sperm with my boyfriend and finding some grim couple in Ohio who are gluten-free and who you pay $75,000 to have your baby. To me it feels absolutely hideous. But that's me, just me. I'm not having a go at gay couples who do. I think if Elton and David want to have babies, that's wonderful. I think we should all do what we want.

Fall is a hopeful time for TV viewers. Every new show is an unknown, save for a handful of promos and publicity photos and we're waiting to find out if the show lives up to the promise of a great idea or... withers away to inspire case studies of failure analysis.
There are few obvious trends this year. The New Normal and Partners both feature a gay couple among its lead characters while Arrow and 666 Park Avenue try to capture the Occupy Wall Street zeitgeist that helped make Revenge a hit. But overall, this fall lacks the "me too" quality that so often characterizes a TV season.
The one trend that does stand out this season are strong ideas that don't quite meet their potential in the pilot. Vegas, Last Resort, 666 Park Avenue and The Mindy Project are some of the pilots that left critics hoping that later episodes fix the rough spots.

Look beyond the headlines, and you might think Americans are falling out of love with Hollywood. But there are reasons to cheer
Do you want the good news first or the bad news? The good news is that the summer of 2012 broke all the box office records that make studio executives feel their sap is on the rise. The Hunger Games gave them the "strongest opening weekend total for a spring release", while Joss Whedon's The Avengers smashed Harry Potter's record to become the biggest box office opening of all time." Seth McFarlane's Ted enjoyed "the best opening ever — $54m — by an R-rated original comedy", while The Dark Knight Rises, undented by the Aurora murders, provided not only "third- highest domestic bow ever, and the best opening for a 2D film" but "the biggest opening day of the year in France, where it grossed $2.7 million including previews." Vive la difference!

Terry O'Quinn as Gavin Doran in "666 Park Avenue" (ABC/Andrew Eccles)
ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.

Timothy Bottoms Gets His Pound Of Flesh
By
Alex Simon
Timothy Bottoms became an overnight sensation at the height of the so-called “Easy Riders and Raging Bulls” era, after landing the leading role in The Last Picture Show (1971), Peter Bogdanovich’s film about the social and sexual rites of small town Texans in the early 1950s. Internationally acclaimed for his portrait of Sonny, a sensitive kid struggling to find his way in the harsh landscape of post-war America, the then-twenty year-old Bottoms suddenly found himself not only in-demand as a rising young star, but a major celebrity, as well, with younger brothers Sam (who co-starred in The Last Picture Show), Joseph and Ben following in their older brother’s footsteps, making names for themselves on stage and screen. Bottoms reprised the role of Sonny for Picture Show's 1990 sequel, Texasville.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third one announced. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
An odd year for the once mighty juggernaut which can still pack 'em in. It had surprise success stories with "Once Upon a Time" and "Revenge", the latter becoming an unexpected international hit, and several shows have gotten renewals despite more modest numbers. Still, with it battling with NBC for the third and fourth position overall, the network has to introduce ten shows over the course of the season in the hope of getting a few stickers.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen include the fashion label dynasty soap "Americana", ABC's update of the 90's "Beauty and the Beast" TV series, the Roland Emmerich-produced thriller "Dark Horse", the...

ABC is shaking things up for its 2012-2013 schedule.
"Revenge" is heading over to Sunday nights at 9 p.m. Et, the slot the now dead "Desperate Housewives" occupied up until last week. Old standby "Grey's Anatomy" is staying put, as is "Scandal," but they're paired with newcomer "Last Resort."
In a press conference call right after the schedule announcement, ABC Entertainment President nm2712251 autoPaul Lee[/link] said he's not concerned about launching a big action show at 8 p.m. -- especially not "Last Resort," from "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan.

Don't forget -- we've opened strong action shows at that hour, and certainly there's an audience for it. We believe strongly in the strength of this show. Demi Lovato has made sure that she's not reuniting with then boyfriend Joe Jonas. Shooting down the rumors that she's been rekindling the flame between her and the middle member of the Jonas Brothers, the former "Sonny with a Chance" starlet claimed that there was no truth behind the swirling gossip.
Speaking to Us Weekly while filming a promo for Acuvue's 1-Day Starts Today with Joe in Malibu, Demi stated that there is "nothing romantic" between her and Joe after their breakup in 2010. She added, "I didn't even know that was a rumor!"
Still, the former Disney star admitted that she's still maintaining a good friendship with the "See No More" singer after their infamous split. She shared, "We've been really good friends for so long. So it's been cool hanging out with him again."
Joe chimed in as praising Demi as one of the greatest people he's ever worked with.

Actor Val Kilmer's once illustrious career has grown dim in the past decade. But over tea at the Viceroy Hotel on an overcast Santa Monica afternoon, the blond and now slimmed-down actor revealed a light within him that is growing brighter and brighter by the day. In speaking about his newest project, Kilmer confessed, "hopefully I will be redeemed for all the years of people saying nasty or naughty things about me."
Not many people can see the similarities between author Mark Twain, a professional satirist, and Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science and a professed faith healer. The pair never met in person, and the famed American author was perhaps Eddy's most public critic, saying that the woman possessed a "crooked" character and was the founder of a "cult."
But Val Kilmer thinks that the antagonistic pair are cut from the same cloth. Twain "got to...

Every year, the five major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) order pilots to be considered for the fall season. A pilot, as you may know, is the first episode of a TV series and the final step in a long development process from idea to screen.
From the 87 drama and comedy pilots ordered this year, a new crop of television shows will be selected -- and I read the scripts for each and every one of them. Over the course of this week, I'll walk you through the network's pilot slates, offer a bit of analysis on their present schedules and provide you with a rundown of the drama contenders. (Plus, a little bit of info about the comedies, too.) Of course, not all of these shows will find their way to your TV set -- in fact, most of them you may never hear of again.

Celebrities will invade Los Angeles this weekend for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. Searchlights will blaze and flashbulbs will pop as Hollywood stars will descend from the heavens -- or maybe just the Malibu hills -- to touch the ground that regular Angelenos walk on each day. They'll smile and snarl our traffic. They'll toss their hair and forget to thank their husbands. They'll praise each other for their bravery, while collecting $75,000 gift bags. L.A. is accustomed to such strange invasions, of course. If you're a movie fan, you already know that L.A. has been invaded over the years by everything from giant atomic ants (Them), to buff cyborgs (The Terminator), to rampaging 3D zombies (Resident Evil: Afterlife). So Angelenos take invasions from movie stars in stride. But this weekend marks an anniversary of an invasion you might not know about: L.A.'s first alien invasion. This...

What is Repo Man all about? The enduring debut of Alex Cox, it’s a melting pot of bizarre ideas, philosophical musings and potent social commentary, yet it’s quite hard to define exactly what the abiding message is. There’s certainly fear of the bomb, echoes of government conspiracy and the Roswell cover-up, talk of revolution in Latin America (one of Cox’s major themes), and a few very funny pops at religion. But aside from bringing together these disparate elements from the fringes of American life, what does it have to say? Perhaps it’s a fairly nihilistic film. In it’s comic juxtaposition of so many contradictory moral and spiritual codes, perhaps it’s fair to say that Repo Man’s anarchic central philosophy is that nothing really matters.
All of its characters are, at their best, amoral and anti-social and it is...

Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas were spotted doing a photo shoot on Wednesday, February 8 in the hills of Malibu, California. The former couple reunited for a magazine shoot with "Pretty Little Liars" star Tyler Blackburn, who served as a photographer.
During the morning photo session, Demi was seen rocking a low-cut red dress and finishing off her look with a pair of oversized hoop earrings. Meanwhile, Joe donned a tight-fitting purple shirt, a gray vest and a pair of matching pants.
Back in summer 2010, Demi and Joe were featured together as the cover of Teen Vogue. The former "Sonny with a Chance" star and the "Just in Love" singer were still dating when doing the photo shoot, but they broke up soon after it.
19-year-old Demi and 22-year-old Joe met on the set of "Camp Rock" in 2007. The "Skyscraper" hitmaker revealed in March 2010 that she's dating him. Their romance unfortunately...

Arguably the defining cult film of the Reagan era, Repo Man, the feature debut of Alex Cox (Sid & Nancy, Walker, Straight to Hell) is a genre-busting mash-up of atomic-age science fiction, post-punk anarchism, and conspiracy paranoia, all shot through with heavy doses of deadpan humour and offbeat philosophy.
After quitting his dead-end supermarket job, young punk Otto (Emilio Estevez) is initiated as a “repo man” after a chance encounter with automobile repossessor Bud (Harry Dean Stanton). An illicit, high-voltage life follows, including an adrenalised search for a mysterious ’64 Chevy Malibu loaded with radioactive – and extragalactic – cargo…
With an iconic soundtrack (Iggy Pop, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies), stunning Robby Müller cinematography, and iconoclastic direction, Repo Man remains one of the great debuts of the 1980s.
Special Director-approved Blu-ray Features:
New high-definition master in the original aspect ratio – 1.85:1 Original mono soundtrack and 5.1 remix, both in DTS-hd Master Audio English Sdh subtitles...

The Bataan Death March … With Chocolate
Another Television Critics Association Summer Tour is over and this was probably the most memorable one I’ve ever done, for a whole host of reasons.
Another critic once described the press tour (which usually lasts for two solid weeks with no breaks at all) as the Bataan Death March With Cocktails. Since I’m not much of a drinker that isn’t true for me. Instead, for me it’s a death march with chocolate since the cable and broadcast networks were constantly tempting us with all kinds of chocolates, from marshmallows covered with dark chocolate to chocolate covered strawberries to all kinds of fancy fou-fou chocolate desserts.
ABC even sent a box of amazing chocolate chip cookies to my room where they begged me to eat them! Talk about evil.
As I said, this TCA was very memorable. The day I arrived in Los Angeles,...

Get ready, because Two And A Half Men is about to get even less funny. The sitcom’s long awaited return to the airwaves in September will feature a funeral for Charlie Sheen’s character. Considering the acrimonious split between Sheen and the production, we bet that the scenes will probably serve as a giant middle finger pointed defiantly at the one with tiger blood coursing through his veins. Revenge is best served cold as a corpse, and at prime time.
We’re also getting an insight as to how Ashton Kutcher arrives at Casa Del Charlie. After the funeral, Jon Cryer puts the Malibu mansion up for sale, and various celebrity guest stars show up for a viewing. Ashton is apparently the lucky buyer, ushering in a whole new era of hijinks. We have no idea why Ashton agrees to take the place with one and a half men...

The aim here is not to nitpick or criticize. It is simply to indulge in affectionate thought experiments and tangents related to movies that I have enjoyed over the years. What are the unspoken motivations, the unexplored avenues, and the seemingly insignificant details that lie between the frames? Oh, and if you have not seen the movies I write about in this column, you are a little behind the times, but I offer a spoiler warning regardless.
The Princess Bride
This is a perfect movie. I would not dare to suggest changing a single moment of it. Nevertheless, there is one detail in the story that has always bothered me. I hope you do not deem it sacrilegious, but I wanted Inigo Montoya to win that duel with Westley.
Perhaps "wanting" Inigo to win is not that unsurprising and even a common viewer impulse. At that point in the story,...
