Is Byron Allen’s $30 billion bid (inclusive of debt) the real deal? Wall Street isn’t sure. Paramount stock ended Wednesday up 6.7 percent to $14.59, a sizable jump on a day when the overall market was down, but well below Allen’s bid for the company at more than $21 per share.
It’s a sign the market is waiting to see Paramount’s next move.
Allen has been in the mix for many deals over the years: BET, ABC, Tegna’s TV stations, Scripps TV stations, the Denver Broncos, the Washington Commanders.
None of those deals, however, came to fruition, though in many cases it was the sellers that got cold feet (see Bob Iger’s oscillating view on whether ABC is a “core” part of Disney’s business).
Allen has gotten deals over the finish line, of course. He forged a $300 million deal for The Weather Channel in 2018; he’s...

While CEOs often make cameos on the upfront stage in a bid to bolster the pitch to ad buyers, Byron Allen went a step beyond Wednesday by serving as emcee for his company’s lunchtime presentation.
Allen Media Group, which owns the Weather Channel, streaming service Local Now, multiplatform network TheGrio and local TV stations, hosted advertisers at a restaurant across from Radio City Music Hall. Allen, who got his start in stand-up comedy, offered frequently unfiltered commentary throughout the event.
Measurement, a familiar topic during upfront season, was one of Allen’s first targets. He derided Nielsen’s methods of counting viewers as “fraudulent,” noting he is in litigation against the company. Like many other ad sellers, Amg is pursuing complements to Nielsen and said it had reached a deal with VideoAmp for additional viewership insights.
TheGrio, which began as a digital brand but has expanded to more than 50 million U.

Byron Allen is the “Allen” in Allen Media Group.
He is the founder, he is the CEO, he is the chairman, he is the face of the company (as a comic and TV host he is comfortable in front of a crowd or on-air), and he is its chief dealmaker.
On Wednesday, at Avra restaurant in midtown Manhattan, he delivered an anecdote to the assembled crowd of media buyers, reporters and Amg employees, that exemplifies his approach to doing business.
Allen recalled receiving a text message out of the blue on the Friday before President’s Day Weekend.
“And the text said, ‘I’m no longer in business with WarnerMedia. Have your people call my people, Judge Mathis,” Allen recalled. “I called him up and I said Greg, I am my people.”

Marilyn Milian, the a no-nonsense judge who spent 22 seasons on syndicated favorite “The People’s Court,” guest stars on Tuesday night’s episode of “Lopez vs. Lopez” as Judge Justicia of “Corte Caliente.”
In this exclusive clip, George Lopez (who plays himself on the series) and his ex-wife Rosie (Selenis Leyva) end up in her TV forum after she refuses to return his engagement ring. Both play up their side of the case for the cameras.
George reluctantly follows the script to say he’s seeking “breast-itution” from Rosie, after she put the contested ring in her bra. Meanwhile, Rosie puts on a show of dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief, then calmly says she can film the emotional outburst again if need be.

Milian replaced Jerry Sheindlin as judge of “The People’s Court” in 2001.
During Milian’s 22 seasons as host and judge, the show was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program 15 times and won 4 times – the most wins in the court show genre.

Night Court is back on NBC, but the only reason the new-boot could happen was because people loved the original series. Night Court ran for nine seasons from 1984 – 1992, so if you haven’t seen the original yet, it is streaming on Freevee. If you have exhausted all nine seasons plus the new one, don’t worry. Showbiz Cheat Sheet is here to recommend six other shows you might also like if you liked Night Court.

The People's Court has been cancelled, for the second time. The current incarnation of the daytime courtroom series will end with its current 26th season.
Debuting in first-run syndication in 1981, The People's Court was the first court show to use binding arbitration. It was presided over by former Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Joseph Wapner. With the help of Rusty Burrell as his bailiff, Wapner's show ran for 12 seasons and 2,484 half-hour episodes.
The series was revived four years later, in 1997, with former lawyer and Mayor of New York Ed Koch as arbiter. After two years, he was succeeded by former New York State Supreme Court Judge Jerry Sheindlin (husband of Judge Judy).
Sheindlin lasted less than two seasons before being replaced by retired Florida Circuit Court Judge Marilyn Milian in 2001. Milian has...

Daytime TV is getting another major shake-up, which is a shocker.
Veteran syndication staples Judge Mathis and The People's Court have both been canceled.
The news will not be welcomed by fans, mainly because the shows will end fairly soon.
Variety first reported the news while revealing that the cancellations are "due to the declining nature of the daytime syndication landscape."
TV ratings across the board are shrinking, thanks partly to the increased presence of streaming services.
Viewers are watching TV on their terms.
Warner Bros. Unscripted Television made both shows in association with Telepictures Productions.
The People's Court (in its current iteration) with Judge Marilyn Milian at the helm has aired since 2001.
Ed Koch served as the judge beginning in 1997, succeeded by Jerry Sheindlin.
The series previously aired with judge Joseph Wapner from 1981 to 1993.

Judge Mathis and The People’s Court will both end their runs at the end of their current seasons.
The Hollywood Reporter learned Friday that the decision was in part due to the challenging market in the daytime syndication landscape.
Judge Mathis, which has been on the air for 24 seasons, follows Judge Greg Mathis as he lays down the law and gives sentences to those in his courtroom. The show won a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding legal/courtroom program in 2018.
The program, which began in 1998, is the second longest-running court show with a single production life, behind Judge Judy. Judge Mathis is also the longest-running Black male host on television.
The People’s Court, which premiered in 1997, will wrap after season 26. It has won four Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding legal/courtroom program – the most wins for a court show in the category.

The verdict is in: Syndicated court staples “Judge Mathis” and “The People’s Court” will both end their run at the end of this season, Variety has confirmed. “Judge Mathis” will wrap after 24 seasons, while this most recent iteration of “The People’s Court” wraps after its 26th season. Season 24 and Season 26, respectively.
Both shows come from Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Telepictures Productions and are distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. According to insiders, the decision was made due to the declining nature of the daytime syndication landscape. As local TV stations shrink their syndication dollars and the advertising marketplace shrinks for daytime syndication, first-run syndication has become a trickier landscape. At the same time, station groups have been expanding their local news broadcasts, also in a bid to save money.
“Judge Mathis” also comes from And Syndicated Productions, while “The People’s Court” is a Ralph Edwards/Stu Billett Production.

Judge Mathis and The People’s Court revival are ending their long TV runs, both victims of challenging market conditions within the daytime syndication landscape.
Judge Mathis has been on the air for 24 seasons, winning a 2018 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program. It was the first court show featuring an African American jurist to win.
Judge Greg Mathis is the longest-running Black male host on television and the second-longest-reigning arbitrator in courtroom television history, behind Judith Sheindlin.
The news follows the recent announcement that another daytime staple, Dr. Phil, will be ending its run after 21 seasons. It’s been a transformational year in the increasingly challenging daytime syndication landscape, with stalwarts The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Wendy Williams Show, Maury, Dr. Oz as well as The Real also ending within the past 12 months.

[[tmz:video id="0_ledbzxul"]] "Little Women: La" star Christy McGinity learned rolling through an intersection -- even just a little -- can prove costly. Christy climbed a step ladder to give the judge a blow-by-blow, but in the end, it was her admission she rolled through...

People don’t realize this but The People’s Court is still on television. Yes, it’s true. The show is currently in its 19th season and the judge for the show is Marilyn Milian. The show gave rise to all of the popular “judge” shows you see on television. Most notably, if it weren’t for The People’s Court then we’d have no Judge Judy and she wouldn’t have a net worth of over $40 million. The premise of these shows is arbitration-based reality court TV. A judge hears small-claims cases in this series that served as a template for several similar courtroom

People's Court judge Marilyn Milian deserves to let loose once in a while -- and she did just that on a recent beach vacation with her family. Per the New York Post, Milian was vacationing in the Caribbean with her husband, Florida Judge John Schlesinger. They were accompanied by their three daughters, Cristina, Alexandra, and Sofia. Kate Upton's lookalike from Vancouver continues to make the rounds of the media, this time appearing on Anderson Cooper's popular daytime talk show.
Unfortunately, Cooper had the day off so Vancouver gymnastics instructor Ania Korkh was instead interviewed by replacement host Marilyn Milian and "Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino on "Anderson Live."
In a segment titled "Kate Upton's Cleavage Twin," Korkh talked about how she became an overnight sensation when she tweeted a topless photo of herself imitating supermodel Kate Upton's cover pose for the Sports Ilustrated Swimsuit edition.
Kate Upton re-tweeted the photo herself and media started calling Korkh the supermodel's "doppelganger," although some debated whether they looked alike at all.
Korkh clarified in the interview that she is not actually a mail-order bride, after jokingly describing herself as such on her Twitter bio and getting a series of marriage proposals when the photo began to spread online.

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson tells EW that he would like to direct an episode of Doctor Who, providing the iconic series is willing to meet his fee — a Dalek.
My Name is Earl alum Nadine Velaquez is joining the cast of Major Crime in its second season, according to Deadline. Velaquez will play a D.A. working on the Phillip Stroh case who clashes with Captain Raydor.

Jon Hamm will be wearing tighter pants in the upcoming season of Mad Men! Unfortunately, producers also asked him to wear underwear so viewers wouldn't spend the season watching if Hamm consistently dresses to the right. Still, let's focus on the positive — tighter pants!
TV Land has ordered a fifth season of Hot in Cleveland, which will bring she comedy to its 100th episode.
According to a study by Nielsen, Twitter can predict a show's success in the ratings. Basically, an increase in how much people tweet about a show predicts an eventual increase in the ratings. That seems obvious, but this study measures and quantifies the connection between the two.
Fox is currently developing two potential mini-series and now it's considering two more. One would be about the O. J. Simpson...

I've been watching the right try to claim that Downton Abbey is a conservative show. Jonah Goldberg wrote about it a couple weeks back and now Fox & Friends repeated that Downton challenges how "rich people... are reviled". Wow. That just says so much about how little they pay attention to everything. I'll be willing to consider that idea when Lord Grantham orders Mrs. Patmore to start using questionable ingredients when she cooks for the staff so that he can afford to have fancier wines with dinner.
Fox's ads for The Following broke a rule for television and asked viewers to watch the show on the DVR. Vulture explains what this means and how its another step in changing how viewers watch TV and how the industry responds to it.

In the days before her appearance on The People's Court was to air, Michelle Parker told friends that she dreaded seeing herself on the show. "She wasn't looking forward to seeing her dirty laundry on national TV," a friend tells People. "She was embarrassed." Indeed, the case was embarrassing. Dale Smith, Parker's ex-fiancé, sued her for the cost of a $5,000 ring that she had thrown over a balcony during a heated argument. The behavior clearly irritated judge Marilyn Milian. "My 14-year-old has a more mature relationship with her boyfriend than you guys do," Milian snapped in court. "You're both complete idiots.

Not a good move. Judge Milian admonished him: "Hey, yo, what do you think you're doing?" Bailiff Douglas menacingly walked over. "Don't walk away from the lectern in my court," Judge Milian said. In honor of his 90th birthday, Judge Joseph A. Wapner is returning to The People's Court for a special episode.
Wapner was the original no-nonsense judge on The People's Court, the first show of its kind to feature real litigants and their civil cases. The retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge decided cases for 12 years, until the show went off the air in 1993.
He was assisted in the courtroom by bailiff Rusty Burrell. Doug Llewelyn interviewed participants after the verdict, encouraging people at home, "Don't take the law into your own hands: you take 'em to court."
The syndicated series return to production in 1997 and has been on the air ever since with different on-screen talent. Judges Ed Koch and Jerry Sheindlin warmed the bench for two seasons each and Marilyn Milian has been deciding...

There's something sweet about birthday reunion celebration, and on Friday, November 13 -- defying all superstitions about Friday the 13th -- The People's Court will honor the original judge, Judge Wapner, on the show. Judge Marilyn Milian will move aside and the distinguished, no-nonsense Wapner will pick up the gavel one more time. Will Dustin Hoffman make a guest appearance? Gosh, I hope so.
Actually, it's Judge Wapner 90th birthday and he's getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (on November 12), so it just seemed appropriate to bring it full circle.

Could there be a new judge hitting the gavel in syndication? Sources say Maria Lopez, a former Massachusetts Superior Court judge, is making the rounds of major syndie distributors this week after receiving some overtures about presiding over her own TV courtroom. The Cuban-born Lopez has been described as having a no-nonsense approach to her work. Court shows are an enduring genre in syndication, and Hispanic judges now are starting to make their mark: Marilyn Milian presides over Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution's The People's Court, and Alex Ferrer is the featured jurist on Twentieth Television's upcoming Judge Alex, set to launch in the fall. Lopez is repped by Rebel Entertainment Partners and attorney George Tobia at Burns & Levinson.
