“Coming 2 America” dominated the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 19 winning all three of its bids. The sequel to the comedy classic won both contemporary awards plus the special make-up prize. The period/character awards went to the makeup of “Cruella” and the hairstyling of “Being the Ricardos.”
This haul positions “Coming 2 America” well for the Academy Awards. In the first eight years of these guild awards, the eventual Oscar winner claimed at least one prize here first. Of its four rivals for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only “Cruella” came away from here a winner. Both “House of Gucci” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” were bested in all three of their races while “Dune” was a two-time also-ran.
The Oscar and Emmy-winning makeup artist Michèle Burke and the Emmy-winning hair stylist Joy Zapata were feted with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

“Cruella” (Disney) and “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon) were the surprise period winners for makeup and hairstyling, respectively, at the 9th annual Muahs Guild Awards Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. They beat out such strong Oscar contenders as “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “House of Gucci” (MGM/UA), and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight/Disney).
Additionally, “Coming 2 America” (Amazon), another Oscar contender, took contemporary makeup, hairstyling, and makeup effects honors. The latter was an impressive upset over “Dune” and “House of Gucci.” The “Coming 2 America” team of Mike Marino, Stacey Morris, and Carla Farmer perfectly complemented the Afro-punk vibe introduced by Oscar winning-costume designer Ruth Carter along with adding some new aging effects wrinkles.
While “Cruella” definitely has Oscar momentum for makeup and hair designer Nadia Stacey’s delightfully ’70s punk look for Emma Stone, the fact that the origin story split honors with “Being the Ricardos” — which...

“Coming 2 America” led all films at the 9th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, which were presented on Saturday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Eddie Murphy comedy in which makeup is used to transform Murphy and Arsenio Hall into an array of different characters, won three awards in the five feature-film categories, taking prizes for contemporary make-up, special make-up effects and contemporary hair styling.
The other two film awards went to “Cruella,” which won for period and/or character make-up, and “Being the Ricardos,” which won for period and/or character hair styling.
“Coming 2 America” and “Cruella” are both nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, along with “Dune,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “House of Gucci.” Since Muahs relaunched its awards in 2013, no film has won the Oscar for makeup without first winning an award from the guild.

The mighty “Dune” (from Warner Bros.) affirmed its craft dominance on Tuesday by grabbing eight out of a possible nine Oscar nominations (original song wasn’t in play). Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping and heady sci-fi ran the field with everything else: cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup/hair, original score, production design, sound, and visual effects. Historically, that puts “Dune” right behind “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Titanic,” which both had nine craft noms.
The closest competitors with four noms were Jane Campion’s Netflix western, “The Power of the Dog”, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake at Fox/Disney — which was two shy of the 1961 original. Landing three noms were Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” at Searchlight/Disney and Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” at MGM/UA.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on January 11. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, eight are vying for these precursor prizes. “House of Gucci,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Suicide Squad” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Cruella,” “Dune” and “No Time to Die” earned two each; and “West Side Story” has one.
Two films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley” — were snubbed by the guild. Conversely, five of the Muahs favorites — “Being the Ricardos,” “Black Widow,” “Don’t Look Up,” “In the Heights” and “The Matrix Resurrections” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

Kristen Stewart, Jamie Dornan, Mahershala Ali, Kirsten Dunst, Jake Gyllenhaal and Javier Bardem were among the stars who came out Saturday to celebrate the contributions of artisan, craft and technical crew members at the 11th annual Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards.
“We seem to get a lot of the attention and the kudos when movies come out but reality is that it’s guys like Haris who do all the work,” said Dornan of Haris Zambarloukos, who was honored with the Cinematographer award for “Belfast.”
Hosted by Yvonne Orji, the “Insecure” star said the Hamilton kudos are not about actors for a change: this time: “We want you to know that we see you, we appreciate you and tonight we applaud you.”
Denis Villeneuve was honored with the Visionary Award for his directorial work in “Dune,” presented by Bardem at the ceremony held at Avalon Hollywood’s Bardot event space.

2020 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards nominations: ‘Bombshell,’ ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Joker’ lead
The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing its nominations on November 11. That is two months earlier than last year, when the slate was revealed midway through Oscar nominations voting. This year, the guild is out of the gate five weeks before the academy unveils the shortlist in nine categories, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling. These awards will be handed out on January 11, which is after Oscar voting but before the nominations are announced.
Two films — “Bombshell” and “Rocketman” — reaped three bids apiece with the Muahs guild. Both contend for special makeup effects. The former figures in both contemporary makeup and hair styling while the latter does likewise on the period/character side.
Six films are two-time nominees: “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Hustlers,” “John Wick: Parabellum,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

Looking for a smoking hot summer look for the weekend? Zoe Saldana’s makeup artist tells you how to get her fiery lips!
A bright red lipstick can be a bit much for a warm night out. Instead, opt for a juicy red gloss like Zoe Saldana wore to the Calvin Klein runway show in Berlin, Germany on July 7. Not only is this gloss super flattering, it’s also easier to use and much more seasonally appropriate than a lipstick formula. Vera Steimberg, Zoe’s makeup artist, used Mac Lustreglass in Venetian, ($14) to get her pretty pout. Vera paired Zoe’s stunning lip with a smudged, smoky eye. “I mixed a lot of dark browns and black and purples on her lids and did half lashes to accent the edge of the eye and a bit of black liquid eye liner,” Vera says. To keep the whole look fresh, “I...

Here’s a fresh, and totally sexy tip for sultry smoky eyes like Zoe Saldana’s!
I’m always looking for new tips and tricks to liven up my smoky eye game. I mean seriously, the same black and grey combo can get pretty tiresome after a while. That’s why when I saw Zoe Saldana’s stunning, upswept lids at Bing’s Celebration of Creative Minds in La on June 22 I had to know how she got them.
Her talented makeup artist, Vera Steimberg filled me in on her secret. “I did very dramatic smoky eyes using black eyeshadow and countoured with a medium brown shadow,” Vera says. But, what makes it look different from every other smoky eye is “I didn’t use eyeliner on top. Just along the bottom and inside eye lid,” she says. “I try to stay away from lines, and concentrate on...

Want a way to instantly freshen your look this spring? Copy Zoe Saldana and reach for the cream blush!
I’ve always been scared to use a cream blush. Like I’m sure a lot of you think, I just figured they’d make me look greasy, not glowy. Well, boy was I wrong! After interviewing makeup artist after makeup artist about their work with celebrities on the red carpet, the one thing they all had in common was that they use cream blushes. I figured they must be on to something so I finally took the plunge and tried one out. Now, I can’t get enough of them! “I use cream blushes versus powder because they give a shine and gloss to the cheeks,” says makeup artist Vera Steimberg. For Zoe Saldana’s gorgeous Met Gala look on May 3, Vera used a combination of Nars’ new Multiple Tints in Turks & Caicos and Cadacques.

I don’t know about you, but every weekend it’s a struggle for me to come up with a new “going out” makeup look. Something about doing the same smoky black eye is a little too monotonous for me. That’s why I am loving the brown, black and purple hybrid eye that Zoe Saldana wore to the La premiere of new flick, The Losers on Apr. 20. “I loved her dress so much it inspired me to give her a fun, young and sexy look,” says celebrity makeup artist Vera Steimberg who created Zoe’s fresh take on a go-to look.

Zoe Saldana looked like the leading lady she is at the La premiere of her new flick, Avatar on Dec. 16. Want to copy her luminous look for your next big night out? Makeup artist Vera Steimberg who created this face for Zoe tells you how!
“I wanted her eyes to look long so I concentrated the liner on the edge of her eyes and filled in the center with a lighter shade,” Vera says. For a bit of glow, “I used the Rms luminizer under her eyebrows and cheek bones – it’s a great highlighter,” she says. To enhance her skin tone, she used a dusting of bronzer all over her face. As a finishing touch, “on her body I used Lea Journo illuminating moisturizer for hair and body – it gives an incredible light shimmer!” Vera says.

Oscar-winner Julia Roberts has finally broken her silence over her pregnancy - and revealed she is taking a break from her acting career to be a mother. The Erin Brockovich star has just finished filming sequel Ocean's Twelve in Europe and has an empty diary so she and second husband, cameraman Danny Moder can prepare for the birth of their twins in the new year. Roberts tells American magazine Newsweek, "I'm not planning anything. I can't imagine how big I'm going to get in the next three months, but you just kind of play it as it comes. I'm allowed to do that, aren't I?" The stunning actress admits her bump is only just beginning to show, saying, "It does kind of happen overnight. You wake up and go, 'Oh my God!'" Roberts met Moder on the set of The Mexican in late 2000, while the actress was in a long-term relationship with Benjamin Bratt and Moder was married to make-up artist Vera Steimberg. They married at Roberts' New Mexico ranch in July 2002.

The make-up artist ex-wife of Julia Roberts' new husband Danny Moder has launched a scathing attack on the actress - labeling her "a husband stealer." Vera Steimberg, who helped transform Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and Dr. Dolittle II, finalized her divorce to cameraman Danny in May after the Oscar-winner allegedly paid $400,000 to hurry the proceedings along. When Vera heard of Julia and Danny's Independence Day nuptials, she made no secret her disdain for the happy couple. Vera says, "I will never be able to forgive Julia, she's a husband stealer." Julia met Danny on the set of The Mexican during late 2000, when Julia was still dating Pinero star Benjamin Bratt and Danny was with Vera. Vera continues, "It won't last anyway. She will be looking for a new husband within a year. Danny has a roving eye, too, and he won't change. He cheated on me and he will cheat on her. Julia has been desperate to get him down the aisle and she's got her wish. I never wanted to lose him but I've given up now."...
