Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing is one of the most optimistic shows to air on television. From 1999 to 2006, President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by the versatile veteran actor Martin Sheen, and his idealistic staff of deep thinkers presented the illusion that Capitol Hill was where the finest minds in America worked together to find the right answers, and got bonus points for the most self-righteous. The NBC series began the same year as HBO’s The Sopranos, and could be seen as its polar opposite, though the two shows had many similarities. Both were considered dramas, but had so many individual laugh lines they veered into comedy. Each featured a strong leader who faced crises, at home and abroad.
Starting with the very first episode, President Bartlet confronted beltway blowback, global dissension, and harsh life-threatening decisions. Some of these issues were personal, because a president’s private life affects the political process.

Janel Moloney joins Law & Order: Organized Crime in Season 3. Pic credit: NBC
Law & Order: Organized Crime is adding a familiar TV face for Season 3.
Janel Moloney, best known for her role as Donna Moss on The West Wing, will be playing a detective in a recurring role in Season 3.
The actress, who has also guest-starred in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, shared a photo of herself on set in her as-yet-unnamed role.
The actress has a long list of TV credits that includes a guest-starring role in another Dick Wolf Entertainment series.
Moloney is the latest edition for Season 3, which is undergoing a shift from the sudden departure of Bryan Goluboff as showrunner last week.
The addition of a TV veteran like Moloney looks ready to spark Law & Order: Organized Crime in Season 3 and give Stabler another tough lady to play off of.

Hyundai, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, Game of Thrones, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
Psychologists approve of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.
"It’s fitting that Netflix released Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on the first day of a new year. In the series, Kondo, an organizing consultant and worldwide phenomenon, goes into messy homes and shares the principles of her highly praised “art of decluttering.” Though she’s not scientifically trained, her system resembles what psychology researchers recommend to boost well-being."

Not everyone is pleased with Mary Poppins' behavior in 1964's Mary Poppins.
"As the parent of a toddler who watches Mary Poppins at least once a week, there are a few things I know. (1) The 1964 Mary Poppins film is indeed practically perfect in every way, and (2) Mary Poppins herself is not a nice person. Now, it’s debatable whether Mary Poppins is a person at all.

It's another West Wing reunion! Joshua Malina, who played Will Bailey on the NBC series, posted on Wednesday night a photo on social media of him having dinner with friends, including fellow former co-stars Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman) and Janel Moloney (Donna Moss) and show creator Aaron Sorkin. "Talking reboot," Malina wrote. Was he being series? The actor, who's spent the last few years as a cast member on Scandal, is known for his sense of humor. But while no plans to reboot the show have been announced, Sorkin appears to have a standing offer at NBC to create one. Britford, recently seen on The Handmaid's Tale, is also known for...

“I’m dropping off the turkeys. Where should I put them?” Morton (Jonah Rooney), a farm hand from Jasper Farms, asks the White House staff early in The West Wing episode “Shibboleth.”
“C.J.’s office,” a bewildered Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) and Toby Zeigler (Richard Schiff) collectively answer, thus setting the course for C.J. Cregg’s (Allison Janney) perplexing task of deciding between two turkeys -- named Eric and Troy -- for the presidential pardon ceremony on the series’ first-ever Thanksgiving episode.

Elsewhere in the season two episode, its business as usual for the White House as President Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and his staff figure out what to do when Chinese stowaways are discovered in a container ship in California. Josh and Donna forever!
According to West Wing costars Janel Moloney and Bradley Whitford, our favorite political lovebirds are still going strong.
We last saw politicos Josh Lyman and Donna Moss a 10 years ago as the finally managed, after seven seasons of whip-smart banter and subtle flirting, to make it work and were shown together on the series finale, implying that their relationship was endgame.
People recently caught up with the actors for a status check on the relationship: Would Josh and Donna still be together today?
"Yes, of course," Moloney says, sending shippers' hearts soaring.

Former West Wing cast members gathered in Austin at the Atx TV Festival on June 11 to mark the 10-year anniversary of the show's finale, but discussing efforts to help veterans returning from war was the real message.
The reunited cast, which included Bradley Whitford, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Joshua Malina and Dule Hill, called for the establishment of Veteran Treatment Courts, where substance abuse or mental health treatment is offered as an alternative to incarceration.
Cast member Melissa Fitzgerald, who played C.J. Cregg's assistant Carol, is now the senior director of Justice for Vets, which leads the national effort...

In this week’s issue of EW, we compiled some of our favorite West Wing character Twitters — a community of accounts by unidentified users who tweet as the show’s characters, including President Josiah Bartlet, Sam Seaborn and C.J. Cregg — to explore how they keep Aaron Sorkin’s political drama, which ended in 2006, alive online.
In the process, we managed to track down the user behind the Joshua Lyman account (@joshualyman), who regularly tweets commentary on political happenings and interacts with other West Wing accounts. After exchanging several DMs, “Josh” agreed to answer some of our questions over email,...

Aaron Sorkin's been nominated for one Oscar ("Moneyball") and won another ("The Social Network") in the years since the demise of the misfire that was "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." And now here's "The Newsroom," which premieres June 24th on HBO, marking his return to the small screen and, at least from the looks of the trailer below, he's in fine form. "The Newsroom" stars Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy, a cable news anchor who has a breakdown in the middle of a college talk ("I want a human moment from you," the moderator presses) and actually says -- saints forbid -- what's on his mind. Workplaces being what Sorkin has always loved and done best, the series will be focused on McAvoy's news show in the wake of the event, with Emily Mortimer playing Donna Moss to his Josh Lyman/Dana Whitaker to his Casey McCall. Sam Waterston,...

The cast of The West Wing must really enjoy each other’s company. Our reunion shoot for the Emmy-laden NBC drama was scheduled for a Sunday morning — early Sunday morning, at a dive bar in East Los Angeles, on one of the hottest days of the waning summer. Some of the women were scheduled to arrive at 7 a.m. Again: On a Sunday.

The one-off. The television landscape is littered with them. Joyce DeWitt in "Three's Company. Jerry Mathers from "Leave it to Beaver." Half the cast of "Law & Order." Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, Jason Hervy, and Josh Saviano in "The Wonder Years." Jason Alexander and Michael Richards in "Seinfeld." Mr. Cooper in "Hanging with Mr. Cooper." Screech, Theo Huxtable, and Marshall Flinkman from "Alias." Sometimes, you're so good at a character that you're stuck with the identity for the rest of your career because you're not quite good enough to play another character.
Last night, during the Emmy Awards opening, I pumped my fist a little at the sight of Jorge Garcia (Hurley!) in the Glee-inspired opening number. And then I felt a sudden pang of sadness, knowing that it's probably the last we'll see of Hurley, at least in any sort of substantial role. He may show up in "Law & Order: Albuquerque,...
