Noomi Rapace is set to play Mother Teresa in a new film from Teona Strugar Mitevska, director of 2019’s God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya.
Rapace will play the legendary Catholic saint in the biopic Mother, which will follow seven consecutive days at a pivotal moment in Mother Teresa’s life, the period where she decides to leave the Loreto Entally convent in Calcutta and launch her own order.
Mother will be Mitevska’s English-language debut. She called Rapace, the star of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, ‘” a perfect fit” for her depiction of Mother Teresa, which will be imagined as a rebellious, almost punk figure fighting against the structures of the Catholic church.
Born in Northern Macedonia, where Teresa is from, Mitevska said she “grew up with the myth of Mother Teresa” but “as an existentialist” wasn’t that interested in the religious...

Billed the ‘Trollywood’ of the North for its close ties to talent, the leading Scandinavian regional film fund Film i Väst in Sweden’s Trollhättan has boarded the Noomi Rapace starrer “Mother, to be helmed by Macedonia’s Teona Stugar Mitevska.
The biopic, in which Rapace will play the legendary religious figure Mother Teresa, will mark the English-language debut of esteemed auteur Mitevska, credited for the 2019 Berlin entry “God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya”.
“I am Macedonian, and I grew up in Skopje- Mother Teresa’s birth place,” Mitevska told Variety. “I didn’t grow up religious, as it was Yugoslavia at the time and we were all atheist or existentialists, but I grew up in a vast family of strong dominant women, almost a matriarchy.”
The director says she got the idea for the pic while working on the docu series “Teresa and I” for Macedonian television, more than a decade ago.

Michael Jackson‘s Bad includes many of his most impressive songs. The writer of one of the album’s songs said it came from God. That’s fascinating, considering that the music video for the tune includes images of some of the most famous religious leaders who ever lived.
Michael Jackson knew a song from ‘Bad’ came from God even though nobody told him that
“Man in the Mirror” was co-written by Siedah Garrett. Grett might be most known for duetting with the King of Pop on his hit ballad “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” During an interview with Blue Railroad, she said “Man in the Mirror” came from God. Despite this, she didn’t directly tell Jackson about its origins.
“My answer to him was that ‘I asked for it,'” she said. “I didn’t mention God because I didn’t know where he was as far as religion goes.

There are very few television creators you trust that if you give their show a chance, you won't be disappointed.
Mike Flanagan has cemented himself as the king of horror mini-series because he took existing formats, refined them, gave them his unique twist, and in the end, it became its own new genre.
The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1 Episode 1 introduced his latest endeavor, where he took some of the most popular stories by Edgar Allan Poe and gave them a modern twist that the audience from the twenty-first century would be able to identify with more.
My full disclosure is that my knowledge of Edgar Allan Poe is surface-level at best, so I'm coming at this from a purely entertainment-oriented angle.
Do you think I'll miss any nuances about Edgar's works the show aims to explore?
The first noticeable thing about the show was that the faces were familiar.

In "We Are Zombies," the team behind 2015's stunning low-budget dystopia "Turbo Kid" and '80s killer-thriller "Summer of 84" asks: what if zombies were real and non-cannibalistic? Filmmaker collective Rkss uses zombies as a marginalized minority to impart social commentary in a world where they're harmless, law-abiding citizens viewed as a festering scourge. We eventually reach a bloodthirsty conclusion brimming with gonzo gore, but that's not the norm for "We Are Zombies." Instead, Rkss frames a slacker comedy around an alternate universe where walkers flip burgers and pay bus fares. It's morbidly cute and curiously endearing — even if less successful juvenile jokes sometimes hinder momentum — all leading to a ravenous third act that delivers the flesh-tearing gore horror fans crave.
The film centers on three bumbling scam artists: D&d dork Karl Neard (Alexandre Nachi), the teddy bear wrestling fan Freddy Mercks (Derek Johns), and Karl's tech wiz half-sister Maggie...

Receiving its world premiere at the Oldenburg International Film Festival, From Dawn Till Noon on the Sea proves a quietly unnerving and ultimately uplifting drama marked by its visual beauty and narrative restraint. This tale of three troubled souls reveals Japanese filmmaker Takayuki Hayashi to be an impressive talent with his feature directorial-screenwriting debut, which should garner attention on the festival circuit and merits international arthouse exposure.
Adapted from a manga by Shun Umezawa, the film establishes its solemnity from its opening seconds featuring a black screen, ominous whistling wind, and then a Biblical verse about a lost sheep. That could refer to any of the major characters in the story, which begins with a news report about a teenage schoolgirl, Mai (actress/model Hanon), who was kidnapped by a 20something man and confined to his apartment for 49 days, suffering from Ptsd as a result.

There are many wonderful things about Randall Park's and Ali Wong's film, "Always Be My Maybe," but one of the best things about it is how it centers the Aapi (Asian American and Pacific Islanders) community in what would otherwise be considered a fairly traditional romantic comedy — a genre of film that often has a bad habit of favoring white actors for the leading roles. "Always Be My Maybe" has a diverse Asian cast, but immediately upon its release in 2019, one very famous Aapi actor, in particular, stole the show in a short, sweet, and chaotic dinner date scene gone horribly awry.
If you've seen the film, then you know the person in question is Keanu Reeves who plays a caricatured version of himself that's meant to gently poke fun at his occasionally spacey personality and "good guy" persona. Reeves plays the new boyfriend of Sasha (Ali Wong...

Italian big-screen diva Gina Lollobrigida was due to be laid to rest in her native hilltop town of Subiaco, after a televised funeral ceremony on Thursday at the Church of the Artists in nearby Rome.
The actress’s only son Milko Skofic, grandson Dimitri and Spanish ex-husband Javier Rigau were among those in attendance alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Cultural Under-Secretary Vittorio Sgarbi as well as film and entertainment world figures Mara Venier, Milly Carlucci, Adriano Aragozzini, Daniel McVicar, Giulio Base and Barbara Bouchet.
The actress’s long-time personal assistant Andrea Piazzolla, who was caught up in a legal battle with Skofic at the time of Lollobrigida’s battle over control of her finances, was also present with his parents.
The burial comes just five days after Lollobrigida’s death on January 16 at the age of 95 years old. Her coffin has been laying in state at the Campidoglio in Rome since then.

Christine McVie always came on like the grown-up in the room, which admittedly might not be hard to do when the room is Fleetwood Mac. But McVie was the emotional glue in a band that has spent the past 50 years breaking up over and over, the most stable, sensible, down-to-earth member of rock’s most unstable, senseless, lost-in-space circus. The universally beloved piano woman who wrote great song after great song, the one all the others got along with. Christine kept singing like the songbird who knew the score, and...

Less than a month after Sacheen Littlefeather died, her two biological sisters are claiming in on-the-record interviews that the late actress and Native American activist wasn’t Native American at all.
In an explosive report published Saturday in the San Francisco Chronicle, Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi accused their late sister of being an ethnic fraud. For decades, Littlefeather claimed her father, Manuel Ybarra Cruz, was a White Mountain Apache and Yaqui Indian, but the sisters say their father’s family actually came from Mexico and that he was born in Oxnard, California, about an hour north of Los Angeles. Their mother, Gertrude Barnitz, was white.
In one of her final interviews, Littlefeather said of her Oscars rejection speech in 1973 that she “spoke my heart, not for me, myself, as an Indian woman but for we and us, for all Indian people … I had to speak the truth.”

There is no evidence that the late Angela Lansbury ever led airlifts to liberate emaciated orphans or helped rescue newborn kittens from burning buildings, but in her own way it seemed the woman was something of a saint all the same.
In the wake of the beloved entertainer’s death Tuesday at 96, evidence has surfaced that tied Lansbury to numerous benevolent acts while starring in the CBS series “Murder, She Wrote” during the show’s original run between 1984 and ’96 and while filming a series of four “Murder”-themed made-for-tv movies between 1997 and 2003. When Christine McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970, she had no idea she was kicking off a five-decade odyssey that would produce not only some of the most beloved songs of the rock era, but also more heartache and anguish than perhaps any other band in history. But during that time, McVie stayed remarkably levelheaded and did her best to bring the group’s warring factions back together again and again. She acquired a lot of wisdom along the way, making her a perfect subject for our Last Word interview series.

The film is a fictionalised version of how a nun became the religious icon.
Award-winning North Macedonian filmmaker Teona Strugar Mitevska has revealed her next project will be Mother, a story about the real person behind the myth of Mother Teresa.
The director describes the project as “not a biopic” but rather “a story depicting five days in the life of a 44-year-old ambitious woman, just at the moment when she is to leave St. Mary’s convent and create her own religious order.”
“We want to make a film about the real person, the woman behind the myth,” said Mitevska.

It’s a chronicle of Princess Diana culled entirely from television news footage and other public records. In other words, this isn’t an intimate portrait of the Princess of Wales that ”takes us closer to the subject” through an archival jamboree of home movies, eyebrow-raising long-view commentary, and investigative coups. The Diana we see in “The Princess” is the one we’ve always seen, the one we’ve been watching for 40 years, 25 of them since her death in 1997. Since we’ve never stopped watching her, “The Princess,” coming on the heels of “Spencer,” Season 4 of “The Crown,” and the short-lived musical “Diana,” may sound like one Diana document too many. Yet after all those dramatic treatments, it’s galvanizing to see the real story laid out exactly as it happened — or, more precisely, as it happened and as it was presented to the public, those being, quite often, two very different things.

For her work in the church as well as the miracles that have been attributed to her, the Catholic Church canonized Mother Teresa as a saint and is now known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She’s also won a Nobel peace prize. There have been a few biopics about Mother Teresa in the past. In

Nikki DeLoach is a well-known Hallmark star who got her start on The Micky Mouse Club and starred on the breakout MTV hit, Awkward.
She knows a thing or two about the business, but she hasn't let it go to her head.
It's quite the opposite, as she uses her enviable position to help organizations that really need the assist.
I've spoken with Nikki before, but this time, it wasn't directly related to a specific project, which allowed me to dig deep into her passion projects and what makes her tick.
Looking through Nikki's notable projects and charitable works reveals she's got a big heart and a desire to make a difference. She and her long-time friend and writing partner, Megan McNulty, had a lot of project pitches, and as they're both people of faith, the Fugitive Safe Surrender program caught their eye.
They recognized that although many people claim to be of faith,...

Belgium’s Fien Troch, who won best director in Venice Film Festival’s Horizons section in 2016 with “Home,” returned to the Lido last week to pitch her fifth feature, “Holly,” in the Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The project, which is budgeted at €2.5 million, is produced by Antonino Lombardo’s Belgian outfit Prime Time. The Dardenne Brothers’ company, Les Films du Fleuve, is among the co-producers.
“[The Dardenne Brothers] have been following Fien’s work for a long time, so it’s great to be able to finally work with them,” says Elisa Heene, who produces alongside Lombardo.
The film tells the story of a 15-year-old girl who unwittingly becomes a savior figure in the aftermath of a school fire. A traumatized community looks to her for consolation, but very soon the line between support and abuse blurs.

Real psychiatric hospitals haven’t used straitjackets for decades, but no self-respecting genre filmmaker is going to let that get in her way. From the moment Mona Lisa And The Blood Moon provides a ceiling’s-eye view of Jeon Jong-seo writhing on the white floor of her white hospital room, buckled up inside a canvas wrap, we know exactly where we are. Man, that chick is crazy, blip city! That’s what that straitjacket is telling you.
So! In comes a trash-talking blonde who makes Nurse Ratched look like Mother Teresa; after calling straitjacket-girl stupid and hitting her head a couple of times, she pulls out a pedicure set full of sharp things for slicing off horny toenails. Big mistake, lady! Don’t think that old constraint garment is going to save you, because Mona Lisa can make you do anything she wants. Yes, she can make you stab yourself if she likes,...

Skater Girl(Netflix)
Starring Rachel Sanchita Gupta ,Shafin Patel, Amrit Maghera, Jonathan Readwin and Waheeda Rehman
Directed by Manjari Makijany
10 minutes into the film, and I was convinced this was Slumdog Millionaire on a skating board in Rajasthan. Then 45 minutes later something magical happened. She is called Waheeda Rehman. I don’t know how or where this enchantress, now in the winter of her life, showed up as a doppelganger of Gayatri Devi, telling us why she would fund a skatepark in Rajasthan. We appreciate.
I was half-way converted, though acutely embarrassed by the turgid benign-gora-log-inspiring-and-enlightening-brownfaced-kids subtext of the drama. There is a village in Rajashthan called Khempur where the scruffy kids in torn shorts and fading school uniforms get a chance to dream , when a pretty half-British-half-Indian full-on Mother Teresa reincarnation shows up, all muddy and weather beaten but full of beans.
Jessica(Amy/Amrita Maghera) shows up like a dimestore Florid Florence Nightingale.

One day in 1992, Angélique Kidjo walked into a magazine editor’s office and found herself being introduced over the phone to one of her all-time favorite artists.
“Someone said, ‘Mrs. Kidjo, Mr. Brown wants to talk to you,’” she recalls. In stunned disbelief, she replied, “Yeah, and I’m Mother Teresa.” But it really was James Brown, the Godfather of Soul himself, asking to talk to her.
“I almost dropped the phone,” she continues. “He was speaking, and I couldn’t understand, so I started singing. He picked up the...

Rococo Punch and iHeartMedia have announced a new podcast series, The Turning: The Sisters Who Left, which explores the lives of several women who joined and later departed from the order of Mother Teresa.
Hosted by Erika Lantz, the 10-episode podcast series features interviews with former members of the closely guarded order, where sisters took vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and “wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor.” For the first time, the women publicly share stories of abuse and betrayal, describing instances in which they were...

Color me impressed.
Zoey managed to put others first on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 2 Episode 7. As her reward for being a relatively good friend for the first time in ages, her friends decided to drop everything to be there for her.
Well, I guess baby steps are all we can hope for this protagonist.
Maybe, we're a little too hard on Zoey because she tried to put her friends ahead of herself this time around as she went out of her way to help Leif and support Max and Mo's restaurant opening.
The issue is how her friends responded to her good deeds, especially Max, who left his restaurant opening to go stargazing with Zoey and the others.
Mo: Zoey, are you Ok?
Zoey: No, no, no, no. This is your night, and I didn’t want any attention on me, and look what happened.
Max: And what did happen?...

This article contains Soul spoilers. You can find our spoiler-free review here.
22, the incorrigible soul voiced by Tina Fey, has resided in the Great Before for a very, very long time. But just how long is that? Centuries? Millennia? By virtue of her name, a number designated to her soul upon arrival in the Great Before, it is hinted that she’s been watching our world with skepticism since the very beginning: a soul who’s had eons to say, “No, that living thing is not for me.”
In all that time, she’s also had countless mentors: Souls who completed a life on Earth and before going to the Great Beyond agreed to take some time off on the other side to offer 22 pointers on the finer things of life. Until she met a guy named Joe, it never ended well. That said it sets up one of the movie’s best running gags.

As the mind behind Monsters Inc., Up and Inside Out Pete Docter has built a track record for directing some of Pixar’s best and most heartfelt works. However, he is also as susceptible any of the Pixar team when it comes crafted unbalanced stories, either in tone or structure. Think of how Brave stumbled from being a female empowerment narrative to Adventures in Bearsitting. Or how Docter’s own Up might as well be an Oscar-winning short film in front of a bonkers adventure comedy. Soul then, may well be the exemplar; Docter’s most ambitious and earnest work to date, so ambitious in fact that it retains the lack of balance and reworks it into the very DNA of the film.

There are moments, watching Disney-Pixar’s latest release Soul, in which the ambition of the Emeryville-based animation house astounds in ways it hasn’t quite achieved in years. Moments of abstract expression that feel entirely unique to its new film, and yet wholly in keeping with the DNA that has made Pixar the standard bearer for family animation. The movie, which makes its world premiere bow this evening at a socially distanced London Film Festival screening, tackles existential themes without ever disregarding its core, family audience. And when it’s at its best, Soul is a joy to behold.

The great French director Eric Rohmer died 10 years ago, but his spirit lives on in other filmmakers. There are artists at work in the Rohmer tradition who, at moments, have evoked his sublime conversational ardor — and if you want to know what I mean, just watch Eugène Green’s “La Sapienza.” Few in the U.S. saw this 2014 release, but it’s a beguiling and rapturous movie. Green brought together four characters in Italy and had them ruminate about love, marriage, sickness, healing, ghosts, light, the mystic wonders of Roman Baroque architecture, and death, all set against landscapes pristine enough to suggest that the earth is still an Eden if only we’d wake up to it. At the end, two characters, each staring directly into the camera, arrived at a moment of truth, and it was as if they were talking to each other, to us, and to God.

If you like your superhero comic-book movies with a truckload of angst on the side, “The Old Guard” might be just what you’re looking for. Or if you like your brooding dramas best when they come with a high body count, this could be the movie for a nice punchy weekend.
“The Old Guard,” which premieres on Netflix on July 10, is a formidable hybrid. It’s based on a comic book series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez about a group of immortal warriors who have been spent centuries quietly dueling the worst people they can find on the planet, but for much of its two-hour running time it focuses not on the battles but on their melancholic aftermaths. It gives Charlize Theron another chance to kick serious butt, which we know she does very, very well, but what you might take away from her performance isn’t her...

Stella McCartney, who designed it, thinks so – but not everyone is so sure. And what happens to other stars’ jackets after they have worn them for one ceremony?
At last some good news for the planet: in conjunction with a general plea for sustainability, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix has vowed to re-purpose his Golden Globes tuxedo by wearing it to other awards ceremonies. Instead of, you know, wearing a brand new one each time.
To be fair to Phoenix, he did not make this pledge publicly. He was outed by Stella McCartney – who designed the tux in question – in a tweet that attracted its far share of ridicule. “This man is a winner,” she wrote, “wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste.” You can imagine the replies.

After a brief break for Thanksgiving, “Saturday Night Live” is back with another returning host, Jennifer Lopez. She hosted “SNL” back in 2001 (providing a classic Gemini’s Twin sketch where she played “Lady Speed Stick”) and then again back in 2010 (an episode with one of the three “Hollywood Dish” sketches). But this is the first episode she’s hosted where she has not also been musical guest, despite an upcoming album and Super Bowl halftime performance, on top of all the well-deserved awards buzz for “Hustlers.”

Last year, Netflix proved our cultural obsession with cults is far from over with “Wild Wild Country,” the hit docu-series about Rajneeshpuram cult leader Bhagwan Rajneesh and his followers. In the years since its massive international popularity has grown, yoga has attracted millions of devotees as fervent as any cult followers. But none as cult-like as Bikram yoga, or hot yoga, founded and popularized by Bikram Choudhury. A new Netflix documentary titled “Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator” tells the story of the cult-like figure, who abused his position to rape, assault, and harass multiple women in his ranks. The newly released trailer showcases countless interviews with his followers and victims, often blurring the line between them.
“He sees himself as a cross between Mother Teresa and Howard Stern,” one male interview subject says in the trailer. Another woman recalls, “I’d see flashes of megalomania, but I didn’t know how diabolical he actually was.

And if there is one thing director Sai Sekhar got right in his movie, it is the title. You can barely make head or tail of this horror film which lacks even the semblance of a logical structure in its two-and-a-half-hour duration. The movie stars Siddharth and Catherine Tresa in the lead roles. Catherine Tresa plays the role of Jyothi, a government school teacher who wants to model her life on Mother Teresa. What she manages to do, however, is behave like Asin on steroids from Ghajini, where the heroine fights to rescue trafficked children from a train. Here though, the heroine attacks a fortune-teller on the road for keeping a parrot caged. To make matters worse,...

Princess Diana's tragic death is one of the most heartbreaking news stories of the century; the 36-year-old former Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, and seven days later, she was honored with a public funeral that remains one of the most watched events in history. An estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide viewed or listened to the funeral, while another three million crowded the streets of London to follow the route of Diana's coffin from Kensington Palace to her final resting place at the Spencer family home in Althorp. Princess Diana had a wide variety of friends, but one friendship might surprise you: the jet-setting, stylish princess had a friendly relationship with nun and missionary Mother Teresa. The duo reportedly bonded over their shared commitment to helping the poor, and a memento from Mother Teresa became one of the most poignant details on the day Princess Diana died in 1997.
As reported by the Daily Mail, one of the items brought to the hospital after Diana's death was a rosary that Mother Teresa had given her. The late princess's butler, Paul Burrell, reportedly gathered up a few items from her home to take to Paris. Along with a handful of other items, Burrell picked up the rosary beads before traveling with her usual driver, Colin Tebbutt, to Paris. Gleason (who played for the Saints from 2000 to 2006) was diagnosed with Als back in 2011. The disease affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. But, despite his physical challenges, Gleason has been a leading voice in raising awareness and money for Als organizations.

Halloween’s Michael Myers finally speaks – and sounds a lot like James Corden. On CBS’ The Late Late Show last night, host Corden donned the old William Shatner rubber mask and sat for some very candid jailhouse interviews, a la Netflix’s Making a Murderer.
Breaking his “eerie silence” (as one seen-it-all sheriff describes it), Corden’s chatty killer launches in with, “Yeah, uhh, I don’t know where this whole he doesn’t talk thing came from.”
Like Murderer‘s Steven Avery before him, Myers denies his guilt, and adds that folks should just move on. “Yesterday’s gone, tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today,” he says, adding, “That’s Mother Teresa. One of my faves.”
But even maskface gets flustered when video evidence is presented (a cold-blooded clip from the first Halloween). “Yep, yep, yep, ok, that does look bad.”
But the killer is wearing a mask.
