This Is Us returned to air with the season five premiere on Tuesday night, and the episode wastes no time addressing two of 2020's biggest tragedies: the coronavirus pandemic and the killing of George Floyd. On his 40th birthday, Randall finds himself speaking with Malik about Floyd's death. He recalls, as a teenager, having nobody to talk to about Jonny Gammage, a 31-year-old Black man who was killed by the police in 1995. So who was Gammage? If you're not familiar with his case, here's what you need to know about it.
Gammage was a Black businessman and the cousin of Ray Seals, an NFL player for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Before his death, he helped Seals organize his philanthropic and business ventures. In the early hours of Oct. 12, 1995, Gammage drove Seals's Jaguar without Seals present. At two in the morning, Brentwood police officer Lieutenant Milton Mulholland tailed Gammage along State Route...

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

As 27 of our 29 Oscar Experts predicted, Common and John Legend won the Best Original Song Oscar Sunday night. Their tune "Glory" from the 1960s historical drama "Selma" brought the first nomination and victory for both men. -Break- After wins at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, this song was the overwhelming choice to prevail with 2/11 odds. It was also predicted by six of our seven Editors, 22 of our Top 24 Users, and 84% of our overall Users. The song "Everything Is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie" was in the second spot with 20/1 odds. Written by Shawn Patterson, it had the support of Kevin Polowy (Yahoo). Tied with that tune at 20/1 was "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from the documentary "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me." It was written by Campbell and Julian Raymond and had the backing of Scott Feinberg (The Hollywood Reporter). Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brise...'...

Anytime a song from an animated film is in contention for an Oscar, the telecast is challenged with staging it in real life. For “The Lego Movie’s” rousing hit “Everything Is Awesome,” they tapped some “SNL” gems, indie rockers and a spoof-tacular Batman. The Lonely Island — aka Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone — joined Tegan and Sara in singing and rapping the track, music and lyrics by Shawn Patterson. They were joined onstage by Will Arnett dressed as Batman (whom he voiced in “Lego Movie”) with Questlove of “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” decked out as sidekick Robin.

Show host Harris signs off with a chirpy, “Buenos noches!”
Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.

The movies have been screened. The votes have been cast. And now everyone in Hollywood is sitting around, twiddling their thumbs, and waiting for Sunday night’s Oscars to find out whose “Academy Award Nominee” title will officially become “Academy Award Winner.”
Here are our predictions for the night’s biggest awards:

Fox Searchlight Pictures
The tightest race of the year, Best Picture is basically a toss-up between Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and Boyhood.
Who Everyone Thinks Will Win: Consulting Oscar predictions from trades like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline, as well as Buzzfeed, IndieWire, and The L.A. Times, the overwhelming consensus is that Birdman will win.
Who We Think Will Win: But we’re still going with Boyhood. Both films are true feats of cinema and, as such, have pretty much split awards season down the middle, but we favor heart to spectacle in the end.

Here's our guide to who we think will clean up at this year's Academy Awards, as well as who we think deserves to win...
Go into the Oscars appreciating them for what they are - awards for relatively popular, very good films - and they're a fun circus, whose mere existence ensures some movies get funded in the first place. Take them as an arbiter of what's actually the best of anything, and you're on far shakier ground. But I think most people have long accepted that.
This year alone, something as daring as Nightcrawler - a very uncomfortable, yet brilliant piece of cinema, with plenty to say - barely made it onto the Academy Awards radar. But that's democracy. Ask 5-10,000 people to choose the best thing, and many times, they're not going to choose yours.
This year's Academy Award nominations are no different in that regard, then. But...

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.

If you would have told someone in The Academy's Music Branch that the Best Original Song category would be a battle for Oscar redemption this year, you may have been met with a, "Come again?" Yes, the Academy Awards can't seem to get through a season without snubbing contenders the public, media and even Academy members are embarrassed over. This year, two films have been the center of particular vitriol: "The Lego Movie" and "Selma." But one of them may find some small silver lining in the original song category. Twitter seemed to be on the verge of meltdown the morning of the 87 Academy Awards nominations announcement. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's critically acclaimed blockbuster "The Lego Movie" was shockingly not included in the Best Animated Feature Film category. This after winning numerous critics' groups honors and earning key guild nominations (many of which it eventually won). The only...

If you've seen The Lego Movie, starring Chris Pratt (voice), Elizabeth Banks (voice) and Will Ferrell then chances are you know the song "Everything Is Awesome." While you may remember it as being an ultra-upbeat pop track with nothing but lyrics about "blue skies, bouncy springs" and endless partying, you may be surprised to learn that writing the tune was anything but. In theory, the songwriting process for The Lego Movie's theme song seems like it would have been a blast. Well I hate to burst bubbles but it turns out everything was Not awesome for one of the track's songwriters, Mr. Shawn Patterson, who co-wrote the now-infamous tune with Joshua Bartholomew, Lisa Harriton and The Lonely Island. Patterson explained what made the process of writing "Everything Is Awesome" so excruciatingly painful for him in an interview with THR: I was going through a very ugly divorce when I...

Actress and singer Anna Kendrick will make a special appearance at the 87th Oscars, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today.
“Out of the woods and on to the Oscar stage, Anna will be performing something special that is sure to be an “Only on the Oscars” moment.” says Zadan and Meron.
Kendrick was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting role in the 2009 film “Up in the Air.” Her other film credits include “Into the Woods” (2014), “Pitch Perfect” (2012) and the “Twilight” film series.
In 1998, at the age of 12, Kendrick was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for “High Society.” She will star in the films “The Last Five Years,” “The Hollars,” and “Pitch Perfect 2” later this year.

People tune in to the all-star games of the various professional sports because they provide a rare chance to see a significant number of the great talents of a profession gather in one place and have fun with one another. In Hollywood, such opportunities are surprisingly rare. And in the music business, they are even rarer.
That’s why The Hollywood Reporter was so excited to corral almost all of this year’s best original song Oscar nominees for an extended conversation and photoshoot immediately following the Oscar Nominees Luncheon on Feb. 2. One refreshing change of pace at the 30th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival is the first-ever Variety Artisans Award showcase, honoring below-the-line talent from some of the year's most celebrated films. It's a nice extension of the trade's recent long-time-coming crafts initiative and, like the reading of nominees for all 24 Oscar categories on the air last month, keeps these men and women in a well-deserved spotlight. Being honored for cinematography will be "Into the Woods" Dp Dion Beebe. It's a fair choice getting away from some of the more frequently recognized names of the year. I thought the work was handsome but couldn't be helped by sets that never seemed to transcend the proscenium. For costume design, there's Steven Noble for "The Theory of Everything." An interesting note on that work is the subtlety of it, as Noble has talked about outfitting actor Eddie Redmayne in such a way...

Here are the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards. I found there to be a couple of surprises this morning such as The Lego Movie not getting a nomination for Best Animated Feature category. Also, the Best Picture category has just 8 titles, this is the first time the category has had less than 9 nominees since its expansion a few years ago; Gone Girl couldn’t have fit in there? I was also surprised to see Jake Gyllenhaal left out of the Best Actor list for his work in Nightcrawler.
The much deserved Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the pack with 9 nominations each, followed by The Imitation Game which landed 8. My favorite movie of the year, Boyhood, came away with 6 nominations.
The Oscars will be air live on ABC Sunday, February 22nd.

Chicago – In an unprecedented oversight, especially for the film community in Chicago, film critic Roger Ebert’s biography “Life Itself” was snubbed for Best Documentary as the nominations were announced on Jan. 15, 2015 for the 87th Academy Awards. Thursday morning provided its share of surprises and snubs, but the Academy’s musical branch took a pretty clear anti-star stance in the Best Song category.
One year after the likes of U2, Pharrell Williams and Arcade Fire dominated the music categories, Oscar’s Best Song voters left big names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Patti Smith out of contention.
The biggest names in Best Song, instead, come from Selma’s entry into the category: “Glory” performed by John Legend and Common. Because the Academy enjoys formality the pair’s given names - John Stephens (Legend) and Lonnie Lynn (Common) - can now be added to the collective trivia file.
The song was one of just a pair of nominations for the historical drama, but having just won the Golden Globe in the same category, it begins the race as the front-runner.

Obviously the biggest story this morning is the surprise snubbing of "The Lego Movie" from the animated feature category. It was not only the biggest animated hit of 2014 but also the fourth highest grosser with $257.7 million. It also garnered a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the presumptive. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. But it wasn't as if Phil Lord and Chris Miller made some mediocrity. "Lego," if anything, was too experimental for its own good, a wild and wacky meta-movie. And Animal Logic's animation was quite adventurous, creating a stop-motion vibe with the CG. You hate to see such success go unrewarded (although it did get nominated for its infectious original song, "Everything is Awesome," by Shawn Patterson). 1. It just goes to show how competitive the race was for the committee to overlook "Lego"'s considerable merits, instead going for Disney's "Big Hero 6," Laika's "The.

It’s going to be another fabulous year at the Oscars, and this morning (January 15) the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled their nominees for the 87th Academy Awards.
All in all, there were no real surprises, with Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper, Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton and Benedict Cumberbatch all scoring nods for Best Actor. And predictably the Best Actress hopefuls include Felicity Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Rosamund Pike, Marion Cotillard and Julianne Moore (however, Jennifer Aniston missed out!).
As far as the Best Picture nominees, “Whiplash,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Selma,” “The Imitation Game,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Boyhood,” “Birdman,” and “American Sniper” are all in the running. The 87th Academy Awards will go live on February 22nd. And the nominees are…

Good Morning Oscar fans! Today is nomination day!
Wamg was in the thick of nomination morning fever at the home of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.
Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.
Also missing among the presumed nominees were Ava DuVernay (Selma, directing), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, directing), Jennifer Aniston (Cake, best actress), David Oyelowo (Selma, best actor), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, best actor), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, best actor), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl,...

As with last year's Best Original Song nominees, the Academy's 79-song list of potential nods was not a very good indicator of what would actually make the cut. Although names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Coldplay popped out as possible winners, voters opted for a diverse mix of pop and classic songwriting verve this year.
Accordingly, the tunes that are up for Academy Awards this year span feel-good Lego party ragers, tender, acoustic love ballads and moving tributes to history. And the performers are just as wide-ranging, with comedians rapping,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:
Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

Weeks of wild speculation, informed theorizing, splashy profile pieces, lunches where movie stars awkwardly make conversation with bloggers and occasionally aimless prognostication finally come down to this one morning: the morning where the nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards are announced. The big show, hosted by the endlessly delightful Neil Patrick Harris, doesn't air until February 22nd. But this morning is when the hand wringing really begins in earnest.
There are a bunch of really handsome, talented people that are going to have a really good morning and even more that are going to be horribly disappointed (luckily they have the whole "handsome and talented" thing to lessen the blow). This has been one of the more unpredictable Oscar seasons in recent memory, without clear frontrunners or surefire favorites. So strap in -- this is going to be a wild morning!

The fifth annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards were held Tuesday night at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. "Birdman" composer Antonio Sanchez walked away with top film honors while "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" also brought home awards. "It’s about time drummers get some love — now we have 'Birdman' and 'Whiplash,'" Sanchez said. "This is shaping up to be our year!" The animated film score prize was handed out for the first time ever and is a nice boost for "Dragon 2's" John Powell, who picked up an Oscar nomination for the first film in the series four years ago. Song prizes went to "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" (with Gregg Alexander performing for the first time in 15 years) and "Everything is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie." Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.
Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.
The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, beat Annie contenders such as Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature.
With awards season is underway comes the 38th Annual Annie Award nominations, which recognize the year’s best work in animation. Since the creation of the animation-specific Oscar category in 2001, the Annies have predicted the Academy Award winner every year except 2006 and 2008.
Unfortunately, the award has been tainted by controversy after CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg reportedly bought each DreamWorks Animation employee a membership in the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, skewing the voting in the studio’s favor. This likely resulted in a surprise sweep by DreamWorks Animations’ Kung Fu Panda at the Annies in 2008-2009 over Pixar’s eventual Oscar winner, Wall-e.
Disney Studios has since pulled its official support of the event and submissions for the awards, though individual animators are able to submit their films themselves. As a result, the rules were changed for individual achievement categories, but Disney sought a neutral committee of animators from every studio to propose and approve guidelines.

The International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, announced nominations today for the 38th Annual Annie Awards™ recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation including best animated feature, television production, commercials, short subjects, video games and outstanding individual achievements.
Two years ago, Kung-Fu Panda swept the awards over Wall-e pushing Disney and Pixar to withdraw from the organization and making everyone else wonder if there is any point in caring anymore about the ceremony. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, but DreamWorks (who pretty much run the show) lead the nominees.
According to /film, Disney’s reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization’s very loose membership requirements and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio’s favour. Disney-Pixar president Ed Catmull said earlier this year,
“After more than a year of discussions with the Asifa board,...

The full list of nominations for the 38th Annie Awards were announced today with Dreamworks’s How to Train your Dragon gathering up the majority of nominations including Best Feature, Animation, Character Design and Voice Work for Gerard Butler and Jay Baruchel, as well as Directing nominations for Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois.
Pixar’s Up took home the Best Animated Feature earlier this year at the 2009 awards and when the awards are announced next February Lee Unkrich and his team are up from a number of awards, along with Disney’s Tangled, but the recent decision of Disney to withdraw support for the awards may go some way to explaining the relatively few number of nods.
It has been a great year for animation as the films on the list below attest, and it’s nice to see Sylvain Chomet’s enchanting film The Illusionist scoring a point against the domination of CG here.

DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" flew high above competition by nabbing 15 nominations for the 38th annual Annie Awards given by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood. ("How to Train Your Dragon" movie review)
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, will duke it out with Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. ("How to Train Your Dragon" interviews)
But there's controversy in the Annie Awards world. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that "Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged."
Apparently, Disney was complaining that the Annie Awards has favored DreamWorks in recent years such as when "Kung Fu Panda" won 10 trophies and beat Pixar's "Wall-e" in 2008.

Disney has tough competition in the form of itself this year, as “Tangled” and “Toy Story 3″ will compete against one another, along with a host of other fantastic animated films, at the 38th Annual Annie Awards.
The Annie Awards will be a battleground for the upcoming Oscar animation awards. This year, only three animated films will be nominated. Why? Because the rules that govern the Oscars are laughably outmoded. But that’s beside the point.
Fact is, the Annie Awards deserve attention amongst the many other awards shows because so many great animated films were released in 2010, arguably more than traditional films. “Tangled,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Despicable Me” and “The Illusionist” will jostle for the Best Animated Feature award.
Here’s a list of all the nominees.

The International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood has announced the nominees for the 38th Annual Annie Awards, and the DreamWorks feature How to Train Your Dragon leads the pack with more than ten nods. But there's a caveat; that and the full list of nominations after the break. This will be the first Annie Awards after Disney and Pixar withdrew from the organization [1] that organizes the awards. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, and Lee Unkrich was nominated Best Director. But in the feature deaprtment this is DreamWorks' show, with a few nods toward the Warner Bros. film Legend of the Guardians and a scant few other features such as The Illusionist. Disney's reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization's very loose membership requirements (read: almost non-existent requirements, until recently) and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio's favor.
