Göteborg Film Festival, running from Jan. 27-Feb. 5, will welcome back some familiar faces during its 46th edition. But it keeps on looking out for skillful newcomers, says Josef Kullengård, head of industry at the festival and the Nordic Film Market. “We want to be the place where you discover new Nordic talent,” he tells Variety.
“It’s a strong year for projects in development, while the workin-progress section combines established directors such as Erik Poppe [presenting ‘Quisling’] with first-timers or people like Ulaa Salim, following ‘Sons of Denmark’ with ‘Eternal.’ It definitely mirrors what the current Nordic film landscape looks like.”
Oscar-winning actor Alicia Vikander will also introduce a new wave of directors, unveiling films produced by the students of educational film program Alicia Vikander Film Lab 2022.

Michael Porseryd is set to exit Sf Studios, the Nordic powerhouse behind Tom Hanks starrer “A Man Called Otto,” as CEO.
News comes as a shock to everyone as Porseryd recently spoke to Variety about the company’s involvement in “A Man Called Otto,” following a successful press launch of the film with Hanks and Rita Wilson who were on hand in Stockholm.
Sf Studios’ chairman of the board, Jan Bernhardsson, will assume the role as acting CEO in the interim. Sf Studios’ board of directors are now starting the process of recruiting a new permanent CEO.
During Porseryd’s six-year tenure as CEO, the company developed a bigger presence in the local and international production landscape, notably with “Horizon Lines” and most recently with “A Man Called Otto,” as well as some big-budgeted upscale period movies such as Erik Poppe’s “The Emigrants” and Björn Runge’s “Burn All My Letters.

“The Worst Person in the World” actor Anders Danielsen Lie and Gard B. Eidsvold (“Wisting”) are set to headline Erik Poppe’s “Quisling.” The film charts the last days of Vidkun Quisling, the former Prime Minister of Norway who was a notorious Nazi collaborator during World War II. The project also comprises a TV series which has been commissioned by TV2.
Danielsen Lie will play the priest Peder Olsen who acted as Quisling’s counselor in prison until he was executed on Oct. 24, 1945.
Set to start shooting this week, the film is produced by Paradox, Sf Studios’ Norwegian production company.
Both the film and series are expected to premiere in fall 2024. Sf Studios will distribute the film in the Nordics and REinvent handles international sales.
The project stems from extensive research and exclusive source material, including the diary written by the priest Peder Olsen from his days as Quisling’s confidante.

Norwegian director Erik Poppe takes on Vilhelm Moberg’s acclaimed series of novels in “The Emigrants,” his new historical drama about a struggling Swedish family which emigrates to the U.S. in 1849, searching for a better future.
“It’s probably the most classic work of literature in the whole Scandinavia,” he told Variety, taking about the 2022 Haugesund Festival winner ahead of its national premiere at the 50th Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund.
Which is why, when approached to direct the film, he had only one reservation: He had to make it his own.
“Sf Studios tried to develop it for years, with another director, but they couldn’t quite crack it. I agreed to take over under the condition that I would be able to start all over again. Focusing on what I believed was the most interesting part: the story of Kristina and her husband Karl-Oskar, their kids and their escape.

Erik Poppe’s historical drama “The Emigrants” scored the top Andreas Award at the 50th Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund. Produced by Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, it is distributed by Sf Studios. Poppe is also known for “Utøya: July 22” and “The King’s Choice.”
Based on Vilhelm Moberg’s series of novels about Swedes who decided to leave their country and search for a better future, it “tackles deep questions about cultural and religious identity,” argued the jurors.
“Even though the events in this story are long behind us, the film reminds us of our own present,” they added.
Interestingly enough, in 1971 Jan Troell also took on the story, ending up with four Academy Awards nominations – including one for Liv Ullmann.
“She was able to see our film and she is its biggest ambassador now. She just loves this take and noticed that it’s about the refugees today. It takes place 150 years ago,...

Powerfully told story of 19th-century Swedish migrants takes its time, but delivers a fresh, honest take on their arduous path
This epic-scale adaptation of a series of novels by Vilhelm Moberg deserves its 148-minute running time, giving the plot enough space to cover a wide and deep tale of a Swedish community’s transition to the New World in the middle of the 19th century. You’d think this kind of coming-to-America story would by now be as exhausted as the poor soil that farmer Karl-Oskar Nilsson leaves behind in Scandinavia when he sets off looking for a better life with richer sod and less control from the Lutheran puritans. But like the fragile, dry apple-tree sapling Karl-Oskar’s wife Kristina (Lisa Carlehed) and his children bring with them on the long journey, this saga takes root and flourishes, thanks to thoughtful film-making and an especially fine performance from Carlehed,...

It took seven years before any filmmaker dared touch the Utøya massacre; then in 2018, all of a sudden, we had two too many. It probably didn’t help that the films weren’t very good. 22 July‘s Hollywood simplicity seemed crass, not least for the awkward fact that it was made by Paul Greengrass; Erik Poppe’s Utøya, a visceral account of the atrocity presented in real-time, and from the eyes of a victim, appeared queasily excited by its own design. You didn’t have to be from the surrounding area to feel a bit uneasy.

Paradox, Sf Studios’ Norwegian production company, is set to produce “Quisling,” a period psychological drama about Vidkun Quisling, the former Prime Minister of Norway who was a notorious Nazi collaborator during World War II.
The film will be directed by Erik Poppe, the acclaimed director of “The Emigrants,” “King’s Choice” and “Utøya: July 22,” who is also one of the founders of Paradox.
In the aftermath of World War II, Quisling was put on trial and executed for his collaboration with Nazis. Since his death, the word “Quisling” is used in Scandinavian and English language to describe a “collaborator” and “traitor.”
“Telling this dramatic chapter in our history is a mission we take very seriously, and we believe cinema is the best way to tell it. It was an intense psychological drama and a thriller that unfolded these days in 1945,” said Finn Gjerdum, who is producing the film with Stein B. Kvae at Paradox.
