No matter your age, anyone who has delved into comic book collecting has no doubt heard the name of Jack “The King” Kirby. Aside from having worked on Marvel properties such as Captain America, the Fantastic Four and the Avengers in their earliest of days, the legendary writer/artist also made some valuable contributions to DC by creating Darkseid and the New Gods. Fortunately for us, another one of his brainchildren most beloved by readers was recently revived in the form of The Kamandi Challenge.
For those unfamiliar, Kamandi, “The Last Boy on Earth,” pretty much functioned as DC’s answer to Planet of the Apes when it originally arrived on the scene decades ago. But instead of having only talking apes ruling the Earth, other animals evolved physically and intellectually as well, most notably tigers. And in the time since, Kamandi has experienced some exposure in other media, more specifically in the animated series,...

Something that’s made Green Lantern books so exciting in the past fifteen years or so has been the constant, significant additions to the mythology, many of which were made by Geoff Johns over the course of his run that lasted for nine years. In the time since, several other writers have run with the torch by making their own valuable contributions, one of which is Sam Humphries, the guiding hand of Green Lanterns.
To this point, I personally have not been shy about showing my appreciation for what Humphries and company have done with rookie Corps members Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. In fact, being able to play around with characters who aren’t Hal Jordan and John Stewart are but a few things that make his title so thrilling.

Since 2012, attending Motor City Comic Con has become a springtime tradition of mine and, in that time, I’ve seen the show grow from a moderately sized convention to a pop culture juggernaut that has become the largest of its kind in the state of Michigan. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if they surpassed the 60,000 mark when it came to attendance this year. If so, that’d make it one of the biggest shows in North America. [Note: Since publishing this article, they’ve been confirmed to have exceeded 55,000, which is still very impressive.]
And who could blame anyone for showing up, be they diehard geek, casual moviegoer or just plain curious? Boasting a handful of cast members from The Walking Dead, Hellboy himself in Ron Perlman, as well as DC TV stars such as Robin Lord Taylor (Gotham) and John Barrowman (Arrow), to name but a few,...

In the past few years, DC Comics have partnered with General Mills to offer exclusive comics packaged inside some of the most popular cereal boxes on the market. Well, the time has once again come for us to hunt down more books featuring the Justice League at our local grocer.
Before we get to the limited edition comics themselves, let’s discuss what separates this year’s offerings from those previous: The fact that known creators are putting heroic spins on cereal mascots. Don’t expect drastic overhauls as people still need to recognize the fictitious spokesmen, but I’d still say they’re certainly memorable.
Here’s what you can expect to find greeting you as you stroll down the breakfast aisle: Honey Nut Cheerios’ BuzzBee as Batman, drawn by Dave Johnson; Multi Grain Cheerios featuring Wonder Woman,...

As good as Justice League vs. Suicide Squad was, I wonder what the point of another Justice League team is. It’s not like another superhero team is bad news, but do we need another one with Batman? Everywhere you turn, it’s Batman, Batman, Batman! He’s like Ben Affleck in the early 2000s: suffering from a bad case of overexposure. Nonetheless, Justice League of America: Rebirth #1 is here, whether we want it or not, so let’s check it out.

In addition to his stellar work on Supergirl, Steve Orlando has everyone talking about his upcoming series, Justice League of America. Spinning directly out of the events of Justice League vs. Suicide Squad, it could be argued that it’s the most anticipated new book from DC to be released in the first quarter of 2017.
Uniting with possibly the best penciler-inker combination in the industry today in Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, Orlando brings together one of the most eclectic and interesting lineups to ever grace a team-up book from this publisher: Batman, Lobo, Black Canary, the Ray, the Atom, Vixen and Killer Frost. To be quite honest, you wouldn’t have to even tell me what the story entails and I would be sold on that knowledge alone.

Dammit, Barry, stop messing with the timeline again! It’s too early to tell if he’s to blame for the events in Superman #14, but it’s normally his fault. Titled “Multiplicity,” this new arc from the writing team of Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason features the return of the Multiverse. The big question is, how does it tie-in with Rebirth?
As Clark drives along a Hamilton County road, he nearly crashes into a battered Red Son Superman, who asks for his help. Red Son Superman tells Clark about his attackers, the Prophecy and his Gatherers, and how they’re after him and Kenan Kong, aka China’s Super-Man. Allowing only a brief moment for expositional dialogue, the Gatherers attack again, making it clear Clark isn’t on their mysterious “lyst.” Proving he’s the ol’ Superman of pre-New 52, Clark declares, “around here the only one making lists is Santa Claus.

Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 09-07-2016
DC Comics continues having some soft retcons in their Rebirth line up. This time around Cyborg is the center of attention, getting a new creative team and focus. Does it work? Will this be the time for Cyborg to pick up steam with a potential film still looming in the distance? Read on to find out!

Review: Did someone not inform Dan Abnett this isn’t the same Clark that was introduced when The New 52 first started! This Superman seems very familiar with Arthur, so much so Arthur has no problem airing some of his more insecure issues with Big Blue. The exchange was awkward, and full of weird contradictions that just didn’t make sense for the characters. Superman says he’s not a puppet and he came to talk things out,...

So Mike Gold, our old and grumpy and sly editor, threw down the gauntlet last week, challenging the marvelous Marc Fishman and the grammatically incorrect me to read the same comic and opine on it. That comic was DC Rebirth #1, the umpteenth revision of the company’s four-color mythos. Marc had his turn on Saturday. Today is mine.
Unlike Marc, I didn’t have travel a long and hard road 45 minutes from my suburban home to another suburb “to make a transaction.” Unlike Marc, I live in a city and the nearest comics store is three blocks away. However, I’m not a particular fan of this four-color emporium – I used to have a fantastic shop six blocks away where I browsed and hung out and bought for many decades, but it closed because of the owner’s illness – so I downloaded and read the e-comic version.
First the positives:

I started reading comics in the “New 52” era. In fact Scott Snyder was already in his second arc in Batman. Lucky for me one of my closest friends made sure that I read certain stories from DC Comics amazing legacy. For example Flashpoint Paradox, The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Death of Superman, Blackest Night and so on and so on. So much rich history in characters and story arcs, that to this day I am still trying to catch up with. A lot of that past had gotten lost within the New 52 and DC You, changing a lot these “legacy” characters and in the process making long time readers very uncomfortable. Enter Geoff John’s rebirth.
Without giving too much away, Geoff John’s does a brilliant job at using pre New 52 Wally West as a narrator and as the main character in our journey through Rebirth.

The massive "Darkseid War" continues to set the stages for the future of the DC Universe as they reveal the secrets behind its newest major player: Darkseid's daughter, Grail! And if the Justice League is not careful, the spoils of war will all end up with her! See the truth behind Grail's role in this war and the future of the DC Universe as she tears her way across it.
Review:
The Darkseid war continues raging on, although why it’s still called the “Darkseid War” I’m not sure, as by this point I’d say it’s really the Ant-Monitor/Mobius war, but I digress.

As the cover implies, Victor Stone does not catch breaks. Cyborg #3 picks up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of the last issue, and we focus on the Technosapiens infecting Robert in his own living room. Elsewhere, more of their kind open a portal in Downtown Detroit and begin the invasion.
Ivan Reis embraces the normal war-torn backgrounds as we pick up 24 hours later with Cyborg and Sebastian leading a group of civilians to safety. Even though their surroundings are less than great, Cyborg still cracks a joke or two about this is just what the Justice League does. He literally stands out here given his blue and white color scheme from colorist Adriano Lucas. During some narration, Cyborg surmises that the nightmares that he’s...

In August 2011, DC Comics changed everything with their line wide reboot dubbed “The New 52”. This reboot started with Justice League #1 and exploded with 51 other titles in September to get things rolling. In the first month of the New 52, every member of the Justice League received their own solo title with the exception: Cyborg. Fast forward four years later, and that issue is rectified with Victor Stone getting his own title written by David Walker and art by Ivan Reis.
Cyborg #1 opens up in a location only described as “somewhere in another galaxy,” with two warring factions, the space marine style Tekbreakers and the symbiotic Technosapiens. (For a visual reference, the Tekbreakers look like Halo‘s Spartans while the Technosapiens look like Venom and The Collector from Mass Effect 2 had a child.

2015 has been quite the eclectic year for comics, and this fact is reflected in our top ten list. Image Comics continues to be the true house of ideas with books ranging from a feminist twist on exploitation films to a murder mystery set in 1940s Hollywood and even a Lgbtq-friendly parody of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Even though they are in the middle of big events (Convergence and Secret Wars), DC and Marvel respectively still have room for offbeat takes on their iconic or not so iconic characters and are represented on this list along with Valiant, which has attracted a veritable Murderer’s Row of creator to shape and develop their shared universe.

Jason Fabok has been one of the most exciting artists in DC's line-up, mostly sticking with Bat-related titles for the past four years. Well, that's set to change. The Batman Eternal and Batman: The Dark Knight artist will become the ongoing artist on writer Geoff Johns' Justice League starting with issue #36, replacing Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. Buzzfeed spoke to the artist, who shared his excitement of taking on the project. "To have the opportunity to draw the next chapter in [Johns'] Justice League saga is an extreme joy and overwhelming to consider," he said. "I’ve always dreamed of drawing Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Lex Luthor, Aquaman and the myriad of super-villains that comprise the Justice League books. Geoff has such an awesome story crafted and I can’t wait for fans to see what he has in store in the coming months. It’s going to get epic!

This one is a lot to take in. Literally years in the making, Grant Morrison’s The Multiversity has finally landed and it is as every bit strange, surreal, fun, and ambitious as you’d expect from the writer. The Multiversity is a difficult book to describe; especially after only reading it’s first issue. The issue opens with a comic within a comic and then possibly hops into another comic with Nix Uotan, the Superjudge and the Last of the Monitors, a passionate comic book fan and a protector of the multiverse. He travels to Earth-7 and finds an unstoppable foe laying waste to the universe. In a supposed act of self-sacrifice he saves one of that universe’s heroes and tells him to warn the rest of the parallel worlds.

DC Comics brings their latest event which unified its universe to the graphic novel format with Justice League: Trinity War. The cataclysmic battle crossed the pages of Justice League, Justice League of America, Justice League Dark, Trinity of Sin: Pandora, Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger, Constantine, and the New 52 Free Comic Book Day Special for 2012. It was a colossal endeavor that brought together almost every character from every corner of the DC world.
Pandora has stolen her box back and is scouring the world in search of the perfect or imperfect soul to open it. She believes her actions will put an end to the evil she accidently released on humanity. The members of the three different Justice Leagues are at odds over whether or not Pandora can be trusted or knows what she's doing. Is she misled in her endeavors or can she really wipe the face of evil off the Earth?...

Holy guest stars, Batman! It's Paul Dini, and he's here to discuss the new Batman: The Animated Series action figures. Heart of Dixie's Scott Porter's stops by to show off his awesome mobile man cave, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado drop in to discuss this week's can't-miss issue of Justice League, and we look at what happens when a Kryptonian gets her hands on a red power ring (let's just say it ain't good). Plus, Tiffany visits some of the DC landmarks on the Warner Bros. lot and we give you another chance to win a trip to San Diego Comic-Con!

This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

Writer: Geoff Johns
Penciller: Ivan Reis
Inkers: Joe Prado, Oclair Albert, Eber Ferreira
Colorist: Rod Reis
Publisher: DC Comics
This was a hard comic to review because of the spoilers leaked by DC about their upcoming Forever Evil miniseries. However, despite a little bit of the ending being ruined, Justice League #23 ties together all the loose ends of “Trinity War” and also sets up Forever Evil nicely. There are callbacks to previous events in the Justice League series, like Darkseid’s invasion and 2012′s Free Comic Book Day issue. Geoff Johns also finds time to comment on several of the heroes’ subplots and flesh out the new villain(s) between the action sequences. Ivan Reis shows why he is the perfect choice for drawing big comics events with several splash pages of heroes fighting each other. But Justice League #23′s strength is its clear, logical plot, and the fact that...

Justice League 22
Writer: Geoff Johns
Penciler: Ivan Reis
Inkers: Oclair Albert, Joe Prado
Colors: Rod Reis
Publisher: DC Comics
Justice League #22 could never be done as a film. It is the first chapter of DC’s first true “epic” in the New 52 filled with exotic locations, intense action sequences, and heroes crossing the line. However, unlike some other events, the seed for this “Trinity War” have been sown since Justice League #1 and scattered throughout Geoff John’s run on that book. Everything, from the new team members to the Pandora cameos and especially the Shazam backup, all pay off in a book that could end up changing how readers view classic characters, like Batman and Superman. However, this book isn’t perfect and contains a little too much exposition. Also, sometimes characters do things that either seem dumb or out of character. There are mystery elements in this book, especially...

Justice League #20
Writer: Geoff Johns
Layouts: Zander Cannon
Pencilers: Gene Ha, Andres Guinaldo, Joe Prado
Cover: Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Rod Reis
Publisher: DC Comics
Having Zander Cannon do layouts for three different pencilers and inkers gives Justice League #20 an uneven quality to its art, but the story sets up the table for “Trinity War” and connects the Justice League and Justice League of America. Geoff Johns also gets to spend time developing some of the new Justice League members, like Atom and Element Woman as well as dealing with the fallout from last issue’s revelation that Batman has cases with all the Justice League’s weaknesses. The plot and fight against Despero may seem a bit cliched, but Johns and his host of artists have the long term in mind and plant seeds for conflict between the several Justice Leagues that could shake up the DC Universe.
