In my wide-ranging conversation with Ethan Silverman we discuss why he is indebted to Cameron Crowe, Hal Willner’s work on Kurt Weill, the gift from producer Bill Curbishley of Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Cole Porter, Danny Fields, Beth Orton, Joan Jett, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Snarky Puppy, and Ethan’s interest in Weill, Lotte Lenya, and Bauhaus projects. On-camera comments by Billy Idol, Bono, The Edge, Elton John, Nena, Ringo Starr, Gloria Jones, Rolan Bolan, Richard Barone, Tony Visconti, Bowie, and Crowe provide unique context on the cultural importance of Marc Bolan.

The lasting power of the iconic 1970s rock band Stillwater is impressive — especially considering that they don’t exist in real life.

The exhibit launches Wednesday, November 25th, and features photos by Elliott Landy, Ed Perlstein, Neal Preston, Ken Regan, Norman Seeff, and Barrie Wentzell.

In 1977, Neal Preston found himself on the road photographing Led Zeppelin, Queen, Kiss, Peter Frampton, and the Bay City Rollers. “I used to have this Halliburton briefcase,” he tells Rolling Stone. “Those ostentatious gold briefcases that were very popular back then. I used to have all my laminated backstage passes in the briefcase at all times, because I never knew where I was gonna have to be.”
After photographing them for the first time in 1976, Preston was asked to join the Queen tour the following year. He’d continue to...

This is part of our ongoing coverage of the 20th anniversary of Almost Famous.
Ahead of the 20th anniversary of Almost Famous this Sunday, director Cameron Crowe unearthed his archive, sharing memories of the film while telling stories from his teenage years as a Rolling Stone journalist.
“When Rolling Stone magazine — my old high school, essentially — calls and asks for something, I answer,” Crowe tells the camera. “Their request was to see if I could find anything from the archives, a.k.a. my garage, that pertained to the Almost Famous experience.

Around the time that a teenage Cameron Crowe was starting to write about rock ‘n’ roll, the odd hybrid known as the rock musical was being invented with shows like “Hair” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” So it makes sense, perhaps, that the movie about Crowe’s first foray into rock journalism, 2000’s “Almost Famous,” has itself now made the transition to the stage.
“Almost Famous,” the musical, opened last week at the Old Globe in San Diego, the city where Crowe lived when he first began his writing career. Its run has been extended through Oct. 27, though it appears to be on a fast track to a Broadway premiere in 2020.
Reviews for “Almost Famous” have for the most part been raves, and I’m not going to offer my own critical assessment of the production — that’s a task better left to somebody who hasn’t been friendly with Crowe for about 40 years.

The final session on Monday at TheWrap’s TheGrill conference was a snap: Filmmaker Cameron Crowe discussed a handful iconic music photographs with legendary rock photographers Joel Bernstein and Neal Preston. Crowe and the two photographers gathered at the Montage Beverly Hills to discuss the ins and outs of a series of 1960s and ’70s pictures of stars like Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Page and Marvin Gaye, recapturing some of the magic that led to those fleeting flashes of serendipity. The first image they brought up was Bernstein’s shot of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury gesticulating on stage at London’s Wembley Stadium.

TheGrill conference next week will present exclusive photography by legendary rock photographers Joel Bernstein and Neal Preston, as well as an interview of the two by Oscar-winning filmmaker Cameron Crowe. Bernstein and Preston have shared a longtime friendship with Crowe, beginning when Crowe was a teenage journalist for Rolling Stone. Their association has spanned many tours, and assignments, even including “Almost Famous” and his recent Showtime show, “Roadies.” Crowe will interview them about the challenges and thrills of living up close to musical artists at their moments of greatest intensity, and what it was like to be just outside the frame.

I've seen Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky only once before and I wasn't a big fan. That was 14 years ago now though and I can't remember much of what bothered me about it so to hear the news Warner Home Video is finally releasing it on Blu-ray (preorder it here) has got me a little intrigued to revisit it, not to mention the fact it's coming with an alternate ending, which appears it will actually be added directly to the film rather than just presented as a special feature. amz asin="B00HETGCFM" size="small"The announcement reports the original theatrical cut runs 138 minutes, while the version with the alternate ending runs three minutes longer at 141 minutes. Crowe's official website wrote about the upcoming release back in January and, well, I'm sorry to say they lied just a smidge about that release date push as the new Blu-ray won't arrive...

Amy Poehler is showing Knope signs of slowing down in Hollywood.
