After almost 17 years on staff at IndieWire as writer, reporter, one-time chief critic, and columnist, Eric Kohn is leaving to join Edglrd, the new multidisciplinary design collective founded by filmmaker and artist Harmony Korine, as Head of Film Strategy and Development. In the new job, which begins August 30, Kohn will focus on developing new films from emerging and established talent for the experimental creative studio.
Kohn will be sorely missed. A respected journalist who made an impact on film culture, Kohn shared an expansive enthusiasm for movies, independent cinema, and the future of emerging entertainment technology. Most recently named VP, Editorial Strategy and Executive Editor at IndieWire, Kohn started his IndieWire career as a sofa-hopping freelance critic delivering reviews at festivals like Sundance and Cannes.

Ray Price, a respected producer of indie filmmaking, died July 16 from heart failure after a long battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his long-term partner Meg Madison. He was 75 years old.
Price launched his film career in 1972, managing the Berkeley storefront theater the Rialto, and went on to build with Allen Michaan Renaissance Theaters, an independent art film chain that became one of the largest (33 at its peak) in the Bay Area and was later sold to the Landmark Theatre circuit.
A tough negotiator and exacting exhibitor, under Price’s stewardship, Renaissance Theaters were renowned for redesigning marketing materials, from posters to press books — designs that fledgling distributors often adopted when the films hadn’t found success in other markets.
At a time when most top arthouse distributors focused on established auteurs from Europe and Asia, Renaissance Theaters exploded those norms by programming new American directors like Martin Scorsese and John Cassavetes.

Yesterday, the 30th Annual Gotham Awards were held, marking yet another notable moment in the awards and precursor season. Unsurprisingly, Best Feature went to Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland, while Breakthrough Series (Long Form) went to Watchmen. Aside from that, there were some low level surprises throughout. Riz Ahmed took Best Actor for Sound of Metal over Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Nicole Beharie scored in Best Actress for Miss Juneteenth, over Frances McDormand for Nomadland or Yuh-Jung Youn for Minari. Breakthrough Actor went to Kingsley Ben-Adir for One Night in Miami… over Sidney Flanigan for Never Rarely Sometimes Always. So, not necessarily the expected results, but strong ones overall. Read on for more… Here are the Gotham results from last night: Best Feature Nomadland Best Documentary A Thousand Cuts and Time (tie) Best International Feature Identifying Features Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award Andrew Patterson, The Vast of Night Best Screenplay Radha Blank,...

Filmmakers Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson know the official log line for their charming dramedy “Saint Frances” isn’t exactly inspiring: “After an accidental pregnancy turned abortion, a deadbeat nanny finds an unlikely friendship with the six-year old she’s charged with protecting.”
“That log line, yeah,” O’Sullivan said with a laugh during a recent interview with Thompson. “We struggled with that line too. It’s so funny, every time we describe the movie, we just want to say like, ‘We know, but—'”
Thompson cut in: “It’s funny! It’s good!”
But that’s the sneaky power of the movie, starring and written by O’Sullivan and directed by Thompson, her partner both in work and life. The pair readily admit the log line smacks of cliche, but underneath that so often lurks the truth, one pulled directly from O’Sullivan’s own life. “It’s not...

The road for Alex Thompson’s “Saint Frances” began on March 11, 2019, at the South by Southwest Film Festival where it won the audience award and a special jury prize for breakthrough voice. Written by and starring Kelly O’Sullivan, the film was picked up by Oscilloscope Laboratories and released in theaters on Feb. 28, just weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a nationwide lockdown. Since then, it’s picked up two nominations at the Gotham Awards, including breakthrough actor for O’Sullivan and the Bingham Ray breakthrough director prize for Alex Thompson. The film remains in the conversation for the awards season.
“Saint Frances” has been beloved by critics and journalists, garnering a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety‘s Peter Debruge named it his second favorite film of 2020 saying in part, “Saint Frances wasn’t directed by a woman, though its candid comedic voice is every bit the creation of screenwriter-star Kelly O’Sullivan,...

The longest awards season ever kicks off today with the announcement for the 2020 Gotham Awards nominees. The awards ceremony, backed by the Independent Film Project (IFP), is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. As always, the Gothams are the first stop on the awards season journey, which this year will last until the Oscars ceremony all the way on April 25. The 2020 Gotham Awards are set to take place January 11, 2021, over a month delay from when the ceremony’s usually held, on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.
While the Gotham Awards don’t always overlap with the Oscars, they often play a key role in elevating films into the overall awards conversation since the ceremony is the first of the season. Past acting winners like Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”), Awkwafina (“The Farewell”), Ethan Hawke (“First Reformed”), and Toni Collette (“Hereditary”) all had Oscar momentum following the Gothams, with Driver nabbing an Oscar nom for Best Actor.

Updated with final winners: Netflix had a dominant night at the Ifp Gotham Awards on Monday, notching four wins for Marriage Story and one apiece for American Factory and When They See Us.
With the book closed on Thanksgiving, the Gothams represented one of the film industry’s first dips into the awards season pool. As a light snowstorm hit the city, talent and execs converged on Cipriani Wall Street, with a remarkably compressed schedule ahead (the Oscars are February 9). While the line between Gotham winners and the Academy’s honors is not usually a straight one, the near-sweep by Marriage Story will keep the film in the center of the conversation. (See full winners list below.)

The precursor season has begun, ladies and gentlemen. Yes, the Gotham Awards have announced their nominations for 2019. This independent body obviously cites indie works, but with the potential landscape of the Oscar race this year, they’ve got a ton of potential players eligible here. As such, when you gaze at the list of nominees for this year, it’s no surprise that it’s littered with Academy Award contenders. Don’t expect the massive blockbusters and major studio hopefuls, obviously, but a solid crop of titles from the impending race are represented. Gotham did a very strong job again this year, setting us up to potentially have a 2019 awards season to remember. Leading the way here with three nominations apiece are The Farewell, The Last Black Man in San Francisco (though not cited in Best Feature), Marriage Story, and Uncut Gems. Right behind them with a pair of citations each were Clemency,...

Noah Cowan is stepping down as Executive Director of Sffilm, the non-profit entity behind San Francisco’s biggest film festival, after the 2019 edition. Cowan, who joined the organization after leaving his role as the founding artistic director of Tiff Bell Lightbox in 2014, oversaw some of the most dramatic changes in the San Francisco organization’s six-decade existence. Under Cowan’s tenure, the San Francisco Film Society became Sffilm, an institution responsible for the sprawling 10-day April festival as well as numerous filmmaking grants, an artists’ residency, and year-round programming.
“I spent some time recently thinking about my personal life needs and goals and this just felt like the right time to seek out new challenges and opportunities,” Cowan said in a Facebook post over the weekend. “I also cannot imagine a better Festival to use as a farewell moment – I am so proud of the selection that the programmers here...

The New York Film Critics Circle has named Netflix/Participant Media’s Roma the best film of the year as well its director Alfonso Cuarón. Voting took place over the course of a near five hour period, outstripping last year’s 3 1/2 hour voting length.
It’s a major breakthrough for the streaming title which is in a limited four-wall theatrical release, and drops on Netflix on Dec. 14. To date, most critics groups have overlooked Roma following its Golden Lion win at the Venice Film Festival. The pic landed in National Board of Reviews top films of the year, but did not land a win in their above the line categories. At the Film Independent Spirit Awards, Roma, which is also Mexico’s Oscar entry, was only eligible and nominated in the best foreign language film category. In total from Nyfcc, Roma counts three wins along with Cuarón’s Dp work.

National Board of Review have unveiled their 2018 winners and the results are… about as middle of the road as one can get. Picking up Best Film was Green Book, while Viggo Mortensen also nabbed Best Actor. A Star is Born was also a big winner, earning Best Director for Bradley Cooper, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott. Elsewhere, If Beale Street Could Talk and First Reformed earned honors, while The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Roma, and Can You Ever Forgive Me? were among more of the best films of the year picks.
Far less embarrassing were last night’s winners for the Gotham Awards, topped by The Rider, which we’ve also included below.

The 28th annual Ifp Gotham Awards offered a few surprises to kick off awards season, honoring dark horse The Rider as Best Feature, its only win of the night. First Reformed and Eighth Grade each took a pair of competitive awards.
The Favourite had ample presence, taking home a previously announced ensemble acting award and having star Rachel Weisz honored with a career acting tribute. But the Fox Searchlight release did not win in three other competitive categories, Best Feature, Best Screenplay and the Audience Award.
Best Actress, in another twist, went to Toni Collette for horror hit Hereditary. A24, which released the film along with Eighth Grade and First Reformed, dominated the distributor standings with five total awards.
In addition to the nine competitive categories, the ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street included several non-competitive salutes. In addition to Weisz, recipients included Willem Dafoe (Actor Tribute), Paul Greengrass (Directors Tribute...

The 2018 Gotham Awards are set to honor the year in indie film, and what a powerhouse year it has been. While the Gothams will spotlight major Oscar fare like Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” and Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk,” the ceremony will most likely be one of few nights this awards season where such great indies like “Support the Girls,” “Private Life,” “Madeline’s Madeline,” and “Hereditary” get the respect they deserve.
This year’s Gotham nominees are led by “The Favourite” and “First Reformed,” both of which are competing for Best Feature against “Madeline’s Madeline,” “Beale Street,” and “The Rider.” The acting categories include nominees such as Kathryn Hahn (“Private Life”), Toni Collette (“Hereditary”), Lakeith Stanfield (“Sorry to Bother You), and Adam Driver (“BlacKkKlansman”).
Check out the Gotham Awards winners below. IndieWire will bold the winner of each category as they are announced.

“First Reformed,” a drama about a priest who questions his faith played by Ethan Hawke, scored the most nominations for the 2018 Gotham Awards, the annual ceremony in New York honoring independent film.
The movie, written and directed by Paul Schrader, landed in three categories: best feature, best actor (for Hawke) and best screenplay.
“The Favourite,” Fox Searchlight’s comedy set in the 18th century court of Queen Anne, picked up two nominations for best feature and best screenplay. "Oh, is that a Coke?!" Greta Gerwig exclaims. A tinkering tray carrying -- yup -- a glass of Coca-Cola has just arrived to her hotel suite. I'm having a side conversation with the actress Saoirse Ronan about their new film, Lady Bird, as Gerwig gleefully intercepts the Coke and takes a sip. "Oh god. That tastes so good."

Despite the insanity of announcing year-end award nominations with still well over two months to go in 2017, we have to give it to the annual Ifp Gotham Awards for being more on-point than most trophy ceremonies this season.
They’ve now unveiled the nominations for their 27th edition and leading the pack is Jordan Peele’s social thriller Get Out. Also among the stellar group of Best Feature nominations are Call Me by Your Name, The Florida Project, I, Tonya, and Good Time.
Check out the full list of nominations below, including Columbus, Ex Libris, Rat Film, Lady Bird, Marjorie Prime, and more of the best films of the year. If The Academy takes just a few notes from this group come next year, we’ll be mightily pleased.

Consider awards season officially started. The Independent Filmmaker Project (Ifp), the nation’s premier member organization of independent storytellers, has announced the nominees for its 27th Annual Ifp Gotham Awards. For 2017, ten competitive awards will be presented to independent features and series.
This year’s nominees are lead by Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” which pulled in four nominations (including Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor), but the breakout debut is trailed by four other hot contenders, each with three nominations to their name. Those include Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name,” Kogonada’s “Columbus,” and Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
