In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.
But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

Thirty years since it ended, we revisit much-loved 80s historical fantasy series Robin Of Sherwood...
The Robin Hood legend has been retold in countless ways, but one of the most memorable of modern times is Richard Carpenter’s hugely influential 1980s imagining, telling the story of Sherwood’s band of outlaws with a combination of realism and luminous fantasy with its roots in British folklore.
Made by Htv in association with production company Goldcrest Films (which was also behind Chariots Of Fire and Gandhi), its 26 episodes ran on ITV from 1984 to 1986, garnering a positive critical reception and inspiring a fan following that’s still enthusiastically active today.
Much of the success of the show was down to the spot-on casting and the chemistry between the performers. Michael Praed’s charismatic-yet-otherworldly presence as Robin was the perfect match for the show’s aesthetic, and the more down-to-earth Little John,...

Not many actors would be drawn to the part of "an idiot" - but that's exactly what attracted Samuel Anderson to his new movie Pleasure Island.
Anderson said he loved playing the light relief - in his words, "a ridiculous plonker" - in the gritty British thriller from writer/director Mike Doxford.
"I've played a lot of love interests - those kind of romantic roles, 'sweet boy' kind of thing - so it was brilliant to come in and just play an idiot," he told Digital Spy.
Anderson is Nate, the hapless best mate of troubled Dean (Ian Sharp) - who returns home from the Army and finds himself sucked into a dark underworld.
"From when I read the script, I was hooked," said Doctor Who actor Anderson. "Just the way Mike had laid his characters out.
"You could feel it - each character was grounded and had a bit of weight to them.

It’s time for another update from our friends at Arrow Video, this time previewing their March 2012 releases which encompass sleazy horror, cult British action movies and gory, cheesy sci-fi… The highlight for me in March’s releases? Definitely has to be Don’t Go In The House.
Who Dares Wins (Arrow Video)
The 60 Second War Begins Now! Paranoia, black ops and espionage combine in Who Dares Wins, a violent and edgy anti-terror classic starring Lewis Collins (The Professionals) and Edward Woodward (The Equalizer). The anti-nuclear movement is plotting a bloody outrage on British soil and, having already fatally lost their undercover operative at a violent protest, the secret services call on the aid of the Sas. Captain Peter Skellen (Collins) risks his career, his family and his life to infiltrate the terrorist group before they can unleash an attack that will devastate the country. This handsome-looking period yarn stars Ray Winstone (sporting a surprisingly convincing South African accent) as an ex-farmer turned fighter from the Boer Wars of the late 1800’s who, upon arrival in New Zealand, is tasked by the British army in tracking down a Maori seaman (Temuera Morrison) who has been wrongly accused of killing an officer, having been caught during a roll in the hay (literally) with a young English woman.
With a posse in tow and two divergent routes, Winstone splits from the other soldiers and goes it alone. He soon finds his bounty, but what he also (unexpectedly) finds is a growing fondness and kinship towards the Maori, who on top of being on the run for a crime he didn’t commit, has to suffer the indignation of fleeing across land which belonged to his forefathers. Winstone soon finds himself at odds with the British over the...

This is the DVD/Blu-ray review for Tracker, directed by Ian Sharp and starring Ray Winstone, Temuera Morrison, Gareth Reeves, Mark Mitchinson, Daniel Musgrove and Andy Anderson. Following the Boer war, former South African farmer Arjan van Diemen (Ray Winstone) lands in New Zealand looking to start a new life. He’s had enough of war and is still grieving the loss of his wife and daughters. Almost immediately he’s drawn into a new drama. A Maori man, Kereama (Temuera Morrison) is falsely accused of killing a British soldier, fleeing into the New Zealand wilderness. Given van Diemen’s superior tracking skills, local army man Major Carlysle (Gareth Reeves) recruits him to track the fugitive. Van Diemen successfully locates the Kereama and forces him to return to face justice. However, the Maori continues to plead his innocence – claims which eventually begin to work their way under the God-fearing van Diemen’s skin.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Legend Of The Mighty Soap Trailer When I was a kid I watched HBO relentlessly. Whenever there wasn't reairings of Fraggle Rock, Braingames, Heartbeeps,...

Thor (12A)
(Kenneth Branagh, 2011, Us) Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba. 114 mins
Let the silly season commence with this expensive comic-book movie, which takes full advantage of its second-tier superhero, free casting rein and Asgard-sized budget to deliver some premium disposable spectacle. Hemsworth's beefy, impetuous thunder god is literally brought down to earth, where thanks to mortal hotties like Portman, he learns there's more to life than swinging a hammer around, but not much more.
Cedar Rapids (15)
(Miguel Arteta, 2011, Us) Ed Helms, John C Reilly, Anne Heche. 87 mins
The corruption of Helms's naive smalltown nerd via a debauched midwest insurance convention is as broadly amusing as you'd expect, striking a filthy-sweet tone somewhere between the Us Office and The Hangover.

Sneak Peek "Tracker", the British-New Zealand action-thriller set in 1903, directed by Ian Sharp and written by Nicolas van Pallandt, starring Ray Winstone ("Sexy Beast") and Temuera Morrison :
"...'Arajan' (Winstone), a Dutch Afrikaner veteran of the Boer War and master tracker, is promised a bounty to capture 'Kereama' (Morrison), a Māori seafarer accused of killing a British soldier. Keremea, who protests his innocence, repeatedly escapes and is recaptured. Arajan and Kereamea get to know and respect each other, before a showdown with British troops led by 'Major Carlyle' (Gareth Reeves)..."
Shot on location in Queensland, the film’s wild, striking landscapes offer a stark contrast to the violence of colonialism.
More than a lesson in colonial history, "Tracker" is a meditation on victimhood and transcendence, encouraging viewers to consider the persecuted individuals in the film.

Tracker is one of those minor movies I'm trying to keep on my radar. (And on yours.) It's a film out of New Zealand directed by Ian Sharp, and starring Ray Winstone as a Boer War veteran who is hired to find and bring to justice a Maori man (Temuera Morrison) accused of killing a British officer. We've seen a couple photos [1] of the actors in character, and now there's a trailer, which you can see below. This trailer makes clear that there's not much mystery to the story, but hopefully there will be value in seeing Ray Winstone and Temuera Morrison play these two parts. Frankly, it's not a great trailer and some of the dialogue is way too on the nose for me. But we don't often see this sort of film any more, so I'm hoping that once all the setup is out of the way there...

Ray Winstone is attached to star in Stuart St. Paul's "Red Snow" as an ex-sas officer tracking down his missing daughter in the snow forests of a remote town in north Canada.
St. Paul, who also penned the script, is set to shoot the $4 million budgeted serial killer thriller in Canada in April 2010, producer Andy Thompson said.
Thompson is at this year's Afm negotiating with sales agents to roster the rights to St Paul's latest venure.
St Paul most recently wrote, directed and co-ordinated the stunts for "Freight," which details the story of a gang of Russian people traffickers operating in the North of England. That film has been snaffled for U.K. and

"Red Snow" is based on a true story of a serial killer in Alaska whose killing spree hit the headlines in the 1980s.
Thompson will produce alongside veteran distributor Alan McQueen.

Both of them looking meaner than a sack of angry rattlesnakes. The film is set at the opening of the 20th century, when a guerilla fighter form the South African Boer war called Arjan (Winstone) takes on a manhunt for Maori seaman Kereama (Morrison), who is accused of murdering a British soldier. What follows is a cat and mouse pursuit through the varied landscape of Nz with both hunter and huntee testing their bushcraft and wits against that of the other. Check out the images below.

London -- Ray Winstone is traveling to New Zealand to star in manhunt thriller "Tracker," scheduled to shoot until early December.
Winstone stars alongside Temuera Morrison, a Kiwi native who starred in "Once Were Warriors" and the second and third installments of the "Star Wars" franchise.
The film is directed by Ian Sharp from a script by the late Nicolas van Pallandt, who died of cancer two years ago. "Tracker" marks the first of the late van Pallandt's feature scripts to be produced.
