The Naked Gun, which originally starred Leslie Nielsen, is one of the most beloved action comedy series of all time and a true genre classic in every possible way. The legendary actor died in 2010, but while he was definitely the main face of the franchise, it was confirmed in October 2022 that the franchise would be coming back and that Oscar-nominated actor Liam Neeson would be taking over Nielsen’s role in the upcoming reboot of the beloved franchise.
And while Neeson is definitely a great actor and a big name, as well as someone who has experience in action movies, it remains to be seen how the production side of the whole project will approach the reboot and what the new series will actually look like. But this is something for the future. What we have now is new casting info that has recently been revealed and which confirms that...

The movie is based on the ‘Naked Gun’ movie franchise which starred Leslie Nielsen as Lt. Frank Drebin. Netflix just unveiled the line-up of films they’ll be releasing in 2024, and missing from that list is the Halle Berry sci-fi movie The Mothership – which, as we reported last week, Netflix has decided not to release at all. At the time, their decision to scrap the movie was reminiscent of Warner Bros. scrapping the films Coyote vs. Acme, Batgirl, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt (as well as a couple other Scooby-Doo projects). But, while at a media event yesterday, Bela Bajaria, who is currently serving as chief of Netflix’s film division, said the producers of The Mothership agreed with Netflix that the movie shouldn’t be released. This is different from what goes on at Warner Bros., where filmmakers are shocked and upset to hear their work is being tossed in the trash.

Back in 2021, a Netflix production called The Mothership was filmed with Halle Berry in the lead role and Bridge of Spies writer Matthew Charman at the helm, making his feature directorial debut. Unfortunately, there have been “multiple delays in post-production” for unspecified reasons… and now Variety has confirmed that Netflix has made the decision to scrap the film instead of completing post-production.
Most people thought it was a questionable move when Warner Bros. decided to scrap the films Coyote vs. Acme, Batgirl, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt for the purpose of tax write-offs, but apparently Netflix thought it was a good idea, since they’ve decided to do the same thing with this project.
If we had the chance to watch The Mothership, we would have found that the story of the sci-fi movie took place one year after the husband of Berry’s character mysteriously vanishes from their rural farm.

Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke’s Amanda and Clay Sandford get a fateful midnight knock at the door in the teaser trailer for Netflix’s Leave the World Behind, which dropped Monday.
“In my line of work, you have to understand the patterns that govern the world. That can help you see the future,” Mahershala Ali’s G.H. Scott says.

Soon enough, the Sandfords and their teenage children are taking refuge from a cyberattack that grows beyond a New York City blackout to become more terrifying by the minute.

Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali are dealing with the potential end of the world in “Leave the World Behind,” an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Rumaan Alam from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.
In the trailer Roberts and Ethan Hawke are vacationing on Long Island when they are intercepted by a mysterious stranger (Ali in a role originally earmarked for Denzel Washington), who tells the couple of a mysterious blackout and his thoughts that this event is just the first in a series of catastrophes.
Kevin Bacon plays a potentially sinister local man, with Myha’la, Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans in supporting roles. Not only is the set-up for the movie incredibly creepy but it feels real, especially given the recent weather events brought on by global warming (the flooding in New York most recently).

Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams in their latest film play an Icelandic pop duo called Fire Saga with dreams of competing in the Eurovision song competition, and they’ll get their chance even as they stuff crotches, fall from wires and proceed to humiliate all of Iceland.
“Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” is a parody film about the wildly popular, international singing competition that has birthed artists like Celine Dion and Abba, but Ferrell and McAdams’ Fire Saga aren’t even in the same league.

Earlier today Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2011. It's a solid list of nominations, but I'm surprised that Steven Spielberg isn't on the list for his work on War Horse. I still haven't seen The Artist or The Descendants, but I'm hoping to see those soon.
The directors nominated this year for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film Award have each demonstrated an inspired command of the medium. The fact that their prodigious talents have been recognized by their peers is the highest honor a director can achieve," said Hackford. "I offer my most sincere congratulations to each of the nominees.

The Directors Guild of America, one of the biggest precursors for the Academy Awards, have announced their nominations today. They are David Fincher for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, Alexander Payne for The Descendants, Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist and Martin Scorsese for Hugo.
The two biggest snubs would be Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life and Steven Spielberg for War Horse. The latter of the two is more surprising, considering the Academy’s fondness for the blockbuster maker. In better news, Tate Taylor is out of the running for The Help, a film that will likely ride into awards season on its performances and syrupy optimism. Out of the five, I’m surprised Fincher made the cut, considering many perceived Dragon Tattoo to not be an awards contender. Check out more information on the nominees below.
