The team behind Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe’s makeup and hair in Poor Things won Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2024 Oscars.

Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston won the award on Sunday night instead of the team who did Bradley Cooper’s makeup for Maestro.
The 49-year-old’s film was expected to win, but perhaps the online controversy surrounding his use of a fake nose to portray Leonard Bernstein prevented it.
Jimmy Kimmel took aim at the A-list crowd at the 96th Academy Awards, so he took this opportunity to throw some shade at Cooper’s Oscar snub, too.

Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were the big Oscar craft winners March 10, each winning three awards. Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller about the atomic bomb grabbed cinematography, editing, and original score, while Yargos Lanthimos’ surreal “Frankenstein” gender-bender snagged costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling.
The rest went to “Godzilla Minus One” (visual effects), “The Zone of Interest” (sound), and “Barbie”. The lone “Barbie” win was a major disappointment for Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster, which was expected to also take costume design and/or production design for the inventive Mattel-inspired fashion and world-building.
The wins for “Godzilla Minus One” and “The Zone of Interest” were both upsets: Takashi Yamazaki’s Kaiju actioner bested Gareth Edwards’ AI-themed “The Creator,” which won the Ves prize, and Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama about the banality of evil (the international feature film Oscar winner) overtook “Oppenheimer,” which won the...

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

As inevitable as “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24) felt last year on its way to collecting seven Oscars including Best Picture, this year’s frontrunner, Christopher Nolan’s historic epic “Oppenheimer” (Universal) also feels undeniable for at minimum seven Oscars including Best Picture and Director. With 13 Oscar nominations, the film has swept all the precursor awards, so its final Oscar take could be more than the seven it won at the BAFTAs. But it won’t win everything.
With “Oppenheimer,” Nolan delivered a serious but entertaining portrait of a man (Cillian Murphy as the theoretical physicist) who must confront how he changed the world — and not for the better. The compelling narrative delivered almost $1 billion at the global box office. Nolan challenged his crew to create everything possible in front of the cameras and avoid digital VFX. Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

Bradley Cooper studied conducting for six years to perfect his role as Leonard Bernstein in his extraordinary biopic of the great US composer
Oscars 2024: best picture nominees – reviews, awards and where to watch
A film about a dark visionary who bestrode the 20th century and changed history might be the Oscar favourite, but there’s another biopic to consider, also of a man whose genius made him one of the past century’s greatest figures, one whose creativity and musical gifts brought – and continue to bring – joy to millions. A man who also changed the world, but unequivocally for the better. I’m talking about Leonard Bernstein, of course, and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, which looks at the great US conductor and composer through the lens of his marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
Maestro is an extraordinary achievement by any standards. Not only is Cooper totally convincing as...

Before scoring three Oscar nominations this year for Netflix’s Maestro — including best picture, actor and original screenplay (the latter shared with Josh Singer) — Bradley Cooper had already garnered an impressive nine Academy Award nominations as an actor (Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, American Hustle in 2014, American Sniper in 2015 and A Star Is Born in 2019), a producer (American Sniper, A Star Is Born, Joker in 2020 and Nightmare Alley in 2022) and a writer (A Star Is Born). His latest crop of nods makes him a 12-time nominee across those three categories and one of the most successful multi-hyphenates working in film today.
So it’s fitting that the star would take on Leonard Bernstein as the subject for his sophomore feature, which features Cooper as the enigmatic composer and conductor — with co-star and fellow Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan playing Bernstein’s wife, Felicia Montealegre. “Maestro” makeup artist Kazu Hiro misses Bradley Cooper’s Lenny. “This is the first show I felt like, ‘Oh, at the end of the filming, we can keep going. He was so fun.'”
For them, every shooting day began with hours in the chair as the two-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Hiro silently applied Cooper’s makeup that would allow him to portray 40 years of the composer-conductor’s colorful life.
“We don’t talk much,” said Hiro, who was part of a “Maestro” panel that I hosted for Netflix’s Tudum event January 13. “It’s a long day, so it’s quite tough. And he asked me to do the makeup by myself. Usually we make a team, but he noticed that everybody has a different brain and eyes and hands. He needed space. That helped Bradley to focus and get ready for the film.”

“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

“Maestro,” “Saltburn” and “Barbie” have won the feature-film awards from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, which gave out its annual awards on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.
“Maestro” won awards the two Muahs categories that most closely correspond to the Oscars’ Best Makeup and Hairstyling category: Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Period and/or Character Make-Up.
“Saltburn” won for Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Contemporary Hair Styling, while “Barbie” took the award for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.

Despite controversy over its use of a prosthetic nose to turn Bradley Cooper into Jewish composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, “Maestro” has emerged as the Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Will it win first at the Make-Up Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards? It has three nominations there: Best Period and/or Character Makeup, Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling and Best Special Makeup Effects.
Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Maestro” will win two out of the three. For Period and/or Character Makeup it’s up against two of its Oscar rivals, “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer,” with “Poor Things” posing the greater threat. “Maestro” is backed by seven out of nine Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets as of this writing. The other two are betting on “Poor Things.”

Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.
The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Let’s take a closer look at this trifecta of categories and examine the last 20 ceremonies to break down how often these awards overlap.
As you can see, in the past two decades, there have been 11 instances where a film has won at least two of these three design categories.
Eight films have won both Costume Design and Production Design: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, “The Aviator” in 2005, “Memoirs of a Geisha...

Oscar Droughts: How Long Will Bradley Cooper and Diane Warren Have to Wait for Their Academy Awards?
“Always a bridesmaid, never the bride” certainly applies to the plight of 19 of this year’s longest-suffering Academy Award nominees. Spanning all 23 categories, these actors, filmmakers and artisans — including actor Annette Bening, filmmaker Wes Anderson and costume designer Jacqueline West — share a peculiar bond. Collectively, they have racked up an impressive 107 Oscar nominations over the years without once stepping onto the Dolby Theatre stage to deliver an acceptance speech. By comparison, living titans Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep have together garnered 47 bids and taken home 13 trophies.
The 96th ceremony may not change the narrative for many of these perennial favorites. Bening, on her fifth nod for “Nyad,” and Mark Ruffalo, rocking out with his fourth mention for “Poor Things,” find themselves in tight races, with Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) way ahead of them. The crucial moment in “Maestro,” when Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein furiously conducts Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” at England’s Ely Cathedral in 1973, marks the culmination of Kazu Hiro’s remarkable transformation of the actor-director as the musical legend. This will likely earn the prosthetic makeup guru his third Oscar (following “Bombshell” and “Darkest Hour”).
Like Cooper, this was a passion project for Hiro, who dreamed of sculpting Bernstein’s face ever since he fell under its spell watching a documentary at the age of 19. Thus, the collaboration between actor-director and makeup artist became a close one in their shared desire to portray Lenny’s iconic look as authentically as possible (covering the ages of 25 to 71 in five stages). They even shared a room together, making it easier to apply the prosthetics in the middle of the night. Hiro had never before encountered anyone as open and communicative as Cooper,...

Barbie led all films with eight wins at the Astra Film Awards on Saturday night, but the biggest winner of all may have been the Hca — an organization of “critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry insiders and creatives” formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association and recently rebranded as the Hollywood Creative Alliance — which appears to have weathered external criticisms and internal dissension, given the sizable talent turnout at its flagship event.

The Oscar shortlists were released December 21 ahead of the nominations on January 23, 2024, and here we’re covering the crafts of makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound, and visual effects.

Also making two lists were Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” (makeup and hairstyling and sound), James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (score and visual effects), Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” (makeup and hairstyling and sound), Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One...

Bradley Cooper has gone from the star of “The Hangover” films to a nine-time Academy Award nominee. His career is something to marvel at but, at this moment in time, he belongs in the same group that is populated by the likes of Glenn Close and Peter O’Toole. Plenty of Oscar nominations… but zero wins.
That could change, finally, this year, however, with his musical masterpiece “Maestro,” which explores the marriage between Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein and Carey Mulligan‘s Felicia Montealegre. Both actors deliver powerhouse performances and are expected to pick up nominations for their lead roles, while Cooper could also receive notices for directing, writing, and producing the Netflix film. His best chance at a win, however, could well be for Best Actor, a category that previously looked like “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy might run away with. Now, Cooper is on the rise. And he could be a...

The preshoot rituals they can’t live without, the studio negotiations they’ve learned to finesse and the creative choices they still can’t believe they got away with — the directors of six of this year’s most remarkable movies got together and talked shop. In November, Blitz Bazawule (The Color Purple), Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Ava DuVernay (Origin), Greta Gerwig (Barbie), Todd Haynes (May December) and Michael Mann (Ferrari) convened for THR’s annual Director Roundtable.
How do you like to start on set? Do you actually call action?
Greta Gerwig I guess I say, “When you’re ready.” It seems less aggressive.
Ava Duvernay I call action. Or I have action called. It took me a long time in my filmmaking to feel confident not to be the one calling action. Now I’ll just tap my Ad, and he or she will do it. But I find it...

Maestro is beautifully framed, dressed and performed. Bradley Cooper disappears into the
role of Leonard Berstein – especially when he’s under Kazu Hiro’s remarkable prosthetics –
and Carey Mulligan is effortless too as Felicia Montealegre, Bernstein’s wife. Cooper and
Mulligan share the screen for much of the two-hour running time, allowing them full dramatic range, but as deft as their performances are, this intimate focus on the Bernsteins’ marriage prevents Maestro coming together as an absorbing, investable biopic.
The dynamic is this – Felicia is a background “muse” who accepts her status until Leonard’s
repeated homosexual affairs become an affront to her and their marriage. It’s a story of
artistry, selfishness, gender roles and conflicted sexuality – and there just isn’t a two hour
film in it. Tension and malaise are present, but the Bernsteins’ relationship is not as
interesting as, say, Elvis Presley and Tom Parker’s,...

Bradley Cooper wore 137 individual prosthetics in 'Maestro'.The 48-year-old actor portrays late legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein in the movie and he worked closely with make-up effects expert Kazu Hiro - who won an Oscar for his work with Gary Oldman in 'Darkest Hour' - for his dramatic transformation, spending five hours in the make-up chair to alter his appearance each day.Kazu devised four full sets of prosthetics and two bodysuits to document the New York Philharmonic music director - who died in 1990 aged 72 -over the passing over time from the early days of his career in 1943 up until the last years of his life.He told People magazine: "All in all, I crafted 137 individual pieces, ranging from small to large."And it wasn't just Bernstein's physical appearance Bradley was trying to transform, as the effects expert constructed a special nose plug for the actor which, as well...

When backlash over Bradley Cooper’s nose prosthetic in “Maestro” first erupted in August ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Cooper himself could not speak out to defend his choice as it was in the midst of the SAG-AFTRA strike. He finally got the opportunity to do so during an interview with “CBS Mornings,” explaining that he first attempted to play famed composer Leonard Bernstein without the prosthetic but ultimately decided “we just had to do it.”
“Nothing catches me off guard,” Cooper said when asked about the initial backlash over the fake nose. “You never know what’s going to happen. I’ve done this whole project out of love and it’s so clear to me where I come from. My nose is very similar to Lenny’s actually. The prosthetic is actually like a silk sheet.”
