It is sad how ill-informed our media is! The coverage of the passing away of legendary ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas, demonstrates this lack of information and research. The credit for Pankaj’s fame is attributed mainly to one film song, ‘Chitthi aayee hai…’ from ‘Naam’. The film was released in 1986 by which time Pankaj had become a hugely popular ghazal singer, second only to the veteran Jagjit Singh. But then, Jagjit Singh had a head start.
By 1986, Pankaj had quite a few silver, gold and platinum discs to his credit. These discs were awarded by the music companies on an album achieving a certain milestone in sales. Ghazals were initially a choice of certain discerning music lovers.
But Pankaj had a varied repertoire and his numbers such as ‘Ghungroo toot gaye’, ‘Sharab cheez hi aisi hai’, ‘Chandi jaisa rang’ and ‘Niklo na benaqab’ carried a definite appeal for the masses.

His career is a testament to the pervasive appeal of ghazal, for Pankaj Udhas, among the foremost who brought the perceived elitist genre of music into the popular sphere, hailed well beyond its prime catchment area, but mastered the form with dedication and performed it with panache.
Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on Monday aged 72, is usually – and erroneously – seen as a purveyor of the ghazal’s “maikhana” tradition.
This is chiefly due to his famous renditions of “Mujhko yaaron muaaf karna, main nashe mein hoon”, “Thodi thodi piya karo”,”Sharab cheez hi aisi”, “Ek taraf us ka ghai ek taraf maikada”, “Sabko maloom hai main sharabi nahi” and several other vintage melodies, but there was more range to his velvet-rounded voice.
Recall the ebullient “Chandi jaisa rang hain tera”, the pensive “Kabhi saaya hai kabhi dhoop” or “Aap jinke kareeb hote hai”, the lightly mournful “Deewaron se milkar rona...

This was totally unexpected, a rude shock, learning of the sad demise of my dear friend and elder brother, Pankaj Udhas, when he still had a lot of singing to do and give much more to the people and his art. We were close friends for over 45 years, though we hailed from different cultural backgrounds – Pankaj was from Gujarat while I was from Lucknow. However, we both hit it off instantly after our first casual meeting decades ago in Mumbai, we both progressed in our chosen field of singing, he specialised in ghazals, and I specialised in bhajans.
Though he hailed from a very wealthy background (of landlords) of Jetpur (Gujarat), I noticed that he did not have the ‘airs’ of an aristocrat. Most people surprisingly found him to be very humble, down-to-earth, practical and of an extremely helpful nature, to one and all, always.

Pankaj Udhas earned his first accolade as a singer when he was 11 years old. He sang the patriotic song ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ at a public event in his hometown Rajkot when the Sino-Indian War was raging in 1962, and he so impressed a member of the audience that he gifted the young singer what was then a princely sum of Rs 51.
Udhas, who passed into eternity on Monday, February 26, at the age of 72, however, had not planned to become a singer. For Gandhi Jayanti 2019 Bollywood brings the mega blockbuster War. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff they take on a student-teacher dynamic as super agents of the James Bond variety, sometimes fighting each other, sometimes joining together to save the world. Produced by Aditya Chopra, directed by Siddharth Anand, its release marks a new level in both action as well as visual styles for action. But it must not be forgotten that these two actors are dancers unmatched in Bollywood, so there must be a good soundtrack to go with all the power visuals. For this Vishal-Shekhar have been asked to define a 5 song very short album, just enough to show off what needs showing off.
Ghungroo is the centrepiece song… all the interviews have been about this song; all the interest musically has centred around this smooth Daft Punk-esque sound. A tropical paradise, Hrithik with Vaani Kapoor, sex practically in the air…...

Delhi Belly is certainly looking like it is a new type of film for the Hindi film industry. Instead of the pyaar of Ddlj we have the madness and the vibe of something like Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. But it is not only in its story the promos for the film have been very unique as well. We have been treated to stars Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor rockin' it to the punk beat of 'Bhaag Dk Bhose', Vir putting on an Elvis groove for 'Jaa Chudail' and then we have the ghazal-ish 'Nakkaddwaley Disco, Udhaarwaley Khisko'. Talking about the promo for 'Nakkaddwaley Disco, Udhaarwaley Khisko' a source said, "The number that Kiran shot takes a potshot at the whole Ghazal culture. Imran was playing what looked like a mixture of Naseer's character in Sarfarosh and Pankaj Udhas. While we shot the number, everyone present was rolling with laughter.
