He worked as a taxi driver and piano player in theaters, before landing a job as an apprentice film editor at 20th Century Fox in the early 1940s.
His family was Jewish and fled the Nazis in Austria, moving to the Philippines. He moved to Los Angeles in 1940.
Oscar winning film editor who did sound affects editing at Universal from 1947 to 1949 and music editing at MGM from 1949 to 1960.

Had an appearance as Admiral Yuri Ilyich Padorin in Hunt for Red October. He was actually hired as editor, but due to stylistic differences with the director John McTiernan, he agreed to be replaced but agreed to take this small part.
