Matthew Jacobs speculates that this year's crazy antics and overexposure killed any Grammy chances for best-selling artists Miley Cyrus and Kanye West. West has already earned three career nods for Album of the Year but not this time for "Yeezus." His only bids announced last week were for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song ("New Slaves"). Cyrus received zero nominations despite two massive summer hits ("We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball"). He says that "Grammy voters appear to have set them a message about their behavior over the past year, and it isn't the worship they've expected." Huffington Post. Steve Pond provides 10 Oscar lessons learned from the the first week of critics' awards. The first is that 2013 is not a year for sweeps (with "American Hustle," "Gravity," "Her," and "12 Years a Slave" all doing well). He also says that the race for Best Actor is narrowing a...

It’s October, and you hear it all the time—usually in reference to film, but coming up in all sorts of discussions about horror and Halloween-related media: “Will this actually scare me?”
Cue the skeptics. “Oh sure, it’s horror, but it’s not scary.” “It’s been so long since something really terrified me.” I’m guilty of saying such things myself—mostly because I enjoy being scared by movies and books, and it’s such a rare treat these days. I’m not talking about shock-factor dime-a-dozen jump-because-the-music-tells-you-to scares. I mean a story that is genuinely unsettling, with imagery that lingers in your brain like a default synaptic firing and makes you see things in mirrors that aren’t there.
Look no further, friend. Independent publishing company Fanboy Comics have released two graphic novels that manage to tap into terror in a way I haven’t seen...

Bernard Rose's Tolstoy project rolls on in style with this bitingly updated adaptation of the 1895 story Master and Man
This minimalist, fascinatingly acted film is the latest in the ongoing "Tolstoy project" of director Bernard Rose. Now he has adapted Tolstoy's mysterious tale Master and Man, from 1895, about a greedy landowner who journeys to a remote town on business in a terrible blizzard, taking with him a loyal peasant. The story has been turned by Rose into an intimate slow-burner, a cleverly judged and satisfying piece of work. The landowner has now become Basil, played by Danny Huston, a haughty and supercilious property speculator. The day after Christmas, he neglects his wife and family to chase deals in Colorado, excited by mouthwatering mortgage-repo bargains and gets an incompetent local taxi driver, Nick, played by Matthew Jacobs, to ferry him around. Basil becomes greedily obsessed with closing the deal quickly,...

She may be a chameleon. She may have mastered more accents than anyone else on the planet. And she may, in fact, be the world’s greatest living actress. But one thing that Meryl Streep is decidedly not is a box-office attraction.
The reality is that, despite her unparalleled reputation, her name alone does not get people to purchase movie tickets — something we were reminded of this past weekend, when her heavily-promoted and generally well-reviewed new studio dramedy Hope Springs, which is based on an original screenplay, opened to a lukewarm $14.7 million.
Since Streep became a household name in the early eighties, she has been a part of several of movies that have attracted American moviegoers en masse — among them 2008′s Mamma Mia! ($144.1 million), 2006′s The Devil Wears Prada ($124.7 million), 2004′s Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events ($118.6 million), and 2009′s Julie & Julia ($94.1 million) — but...

'It gets a lot more tricky to make them digital, yet photographically representational,' visual-effects master Phil Tippett says.

From "Star Wars" to "Indiana Jones" to "Jurassic Park," visual-effects maestro Phil Tippett has had a hand in some of the greatest movies of the past 30 years. This past weekend, if the wolves of the record-setting blockbuster "New Moon" thrilled you, then you have him to thank.
In an exclusive interview with MTV, the owner of Tippett Studio was eager to chat about making the wolf pack come to life, the intensive research that had his computer artists hanging out with the real thing, and why trips to the "New Moon" set often became a hairy proposition.
Brand-New Special Effects Shots From "New Moon"
MTV: Congratulations, Phil, the fans seem pretty pleased with the movie so far.
Phil Tippett: I suppose so; I'm not quite one of that ilk.

One of the most memorable aspects of the much-loved (by both critics and fans) but sadly underseen Drag Me To Hell is the ending of Sam Raimi’s supernatural thriller (Spoiler Alert: that conclusion will be discussed heavily in this piece, with photos from the sequence—so if you haven’t seen the film yet, read no further). Even if you see it coming, as some people have claimed to, it’s a hell of a note to end on, and has sent audiences out buzzing.
When it came time to bring this finale to the screen, Raimi (who also scripted the Universal release with his brother Ivan) looked to Academy Award-winning visual FX house Tippett Studios (Cloverfield, Blade II, Starship Troopers), which also ended up contributing to the opening sequence and the moment in which heroine Christine (Alison Lohman) snorts and swallows a fly.
