Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. Some of the other top nominees on the TV side were “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” with five noms apiece, and “The Crown” with four bids. But which shows ended up being the big winners during the three-hour ceremony?
Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was the first TV category handed out this year, and it went to Ali Wong (“Beef”), who is also predicted to prevail at next week’s Emmys. She beat out Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Elizabeth Olson (“Love and Death”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”).

“Succession” made sure to make history on it’s way out, earning a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes for its farewell season. Those final nominations helped HBO score 17 overall, the most of any network at the 81st ceremony; the network netted 16 nominations and its streaming service Max landed one. It won a neck-and-neck race with Netflix, which earned 15 total, with Apple TV+ just missing out on double digits with nine.
In addition to those nine “Succession” nominations, HBO had success with its other drama series “The Last of Us,” which earned three bids. “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “The Diplomat” led the way for Netflix, which also got a boost by dominating the new Stand-Up Comedian on Television category with five bids out of the six total slots. “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” all contributed to the Apple TV+ tally.

Darren Aronofsky may be more well-known as a movie director, but with "The Answers," the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind "Black Swan," "The Wrestler," and "Requiem for a Dream" will be working on a new television series in the capacity of an executive producer. This won't be the first time Aronofsky has dabbled in the TV arena, as he's also got the Octavia Butler miniseries "Kindred" in the pipeline, and has done some documentary work on the small screen. However, like Aronofsky's upcoming film festival darling "The Whale," (based on the novel by Samuel D. Hunter) "The Answers" is a high-profile literary adaptation.
For anyone seeking, well, answers about "The Answers," here's everything we know so far.

Legendary’s MonsterVerse is something of a miracle in the realm of modern franchises. America had its shot at adapting Toho’s Godzilla in 1998 only to find almost universal hatred from the fanbase, poor critical reception, and a weaker box office than expected. Toho themselves even voiced their displeasure with the final product.
The notion of a mega budget, interconnected “shared universe” franchise starring Godzilla and pals was nothing more than a flight of fanboy fancy. But in 2014 Warner Bros. and Legendary took the first rumbling step into the playing field with 2014’s Godzilla.
Since that film’s positive critical reception and strong box office numbers, Godzilla found himself back in the pop cultural zeitgeist for life-long fans as well as newcomers to enjoy.

Potential spoilers for both "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" follow.
There was something slightly depressing about watching "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" in theaters this week. There was a lot to love about this movie: Elizabeth Olson gave an amazing performance as Wanda, and because Sam Raimi was given some freedom to do his thing, we got to enjoy the first Marvel movie in a while that was genuinely scary. Wanda's murder spree was incredibly violent, feeling real in a way that sets this movie apart from the rest of the MCU. Watching Wanda chase after...

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Marvel’s latest superhero epic and the first since the box office juggernaut “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” made 36 million in its Thursday previews that began at 3 p.m. The film opens today on 4,534 locations, which is the seventh widest opening footprint in industry history.
The “Doctor Strange” sequel should kick off the summer blockbuster season in style and give audiences another reminder of what a pandemic box office could look like if back to full strength. Independent trackers suggest that “Doctor Strange 2” could bring in 160 million in its opening weekend, with some going even higher to a 200 million start, if below what “No Way Home” managed. Though Disney has tempered expectations, some still say it could pass “The Batman” and its 134 million opening from this spring.
For comparison, “The Batman” made 21.6 million in its Thursday preview screenings, and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness...

“I do get recognized a lot,” Christian Hubicki confesses to Gold Derby when we proclaim him to be the face of “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” on the morning after he was eliminated. “I try to keep the changes as small and as manageable as possible,” he continues. “I started my new job. I’m teaching a class. I don’t talk about ‘Survivor’ during the class. I just kind of do my business. I try to sort of treat it like it’s normal.” Listen to our exit interview above.

“I don’t have any regrets,” Gabby Pascuzzi tells Gold Derby the morning after she was eliminated in Wednesday’s loved ones episode of “Survivor: David vs. Goliath.” After Gabby decided to betray her nerdmance partner Christian Hubicki, Christian got wind of the plan so he used his hidden immunity idol to save himself. Thus, Gabby was eliminated with only two votes cast against her (from Angelina Keeley and Mike White). Listen to our exit interview above.

“I felt an eerie feeling today,” admitted Gabby Pascuzzi, the sixth jury member of “Survivor: David vs. Goliath,” during her Ponderosa video (watch above). Gabby was voted out of Wednesday’s episode after she tried — and failed — to make a “big move” by blindsiding her closest ally Christian Hubicki. After Davie Rickenbacker told Christian about Gabby’s master plan, Christian decided to use his hidden immunity idol. Thus, the five votes for Christian did not count and Gabby ended up going home with only two votes cast against her from Angelina Keeley and Mike White.

“I had hope, but I knew I was going home 100%,” Alec Merlino tells Gold Derby about being eliminated in Wednesday’s double-length episode of “Survivor: David vs. Goliath.” Despite having a close relationship with his fellow Goliath tribe members, Alec was sent to Ponderosa by a unanimous vote — in part because he was a physical threat and in part because the Goliaths wanted to show the Davids they could work together. Despite having so much power in “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” that the other castaways all called him the Godfather, Carl Boudreaux was eliminated at the end of the two-hour episode on Wednesday, November 28. “We bust this game wide open” was an ominous prospect posed by Nick Wilson last week at tribal council on “Survivor: David vs. Goliath.” Over the past two weeks the original David tribe members have been able to overcome being down in the numbers to level the score against the dominant Goliath tribe. This numbers swing could blur the lines between the original tribes and begin a whole new chapter in this game of Biblical proportions.

“It was a little frustrating,” Dan Rengering tells Gold Derby about being eliminated on “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” after Carl Boudreaux used his idol nullifier to make Dan’s hidden idol worthless. “You think when you have an idol you’re golden, you’re gonna be good to go. With 13 options to choose from over the 37 seasons of “Survivor,” 28% of fans who voted in our recent poll have decided that Coby Archa from Season 10 is the biggest threat to be eliminated at merge of all time. In “Survivor: Palau,” Coby’s original tribe Koror won eight of the season’s first nine immunity challenges, resulting in a eight-to-one majority at the time of the merge. Despite those unprecedented numbers, Coby’s own tribe voted him out before Ulong’s Stephenie Lagrossa because of his tendency to spill tribal secrets.
What Coby’s victory in the poll shows is something that is still true of “Survivor” game play: being among the majority alliance/tribe does not grant you 100% protection. This week Elizabeth Olson became the latest castaway in “Survivor” history to go down as the “merge boot.” Typically at merge the player seen as one of the biggest threats in the game is eliminated first–exactly what kind of threat that player is varies greatly depending on the cast and the alliances of their season. In Elizabeth’s case she was voted out unanimously, on one hand a volatile personality that was targeting strong Goliath members and on the other a viable sacrifice her fellow Davids were willing to make.
So how does Elizabeth stack up when compared to merge boots of the past? Below take our poll to decide who was the biggest merge threat in “Survivor” history. Wednesday’s merge episode of “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” was officially one for the books as it featured new strategies, alliance double-dealing, backstabbing, gossip-spreading and a whole lot of drool-inducing messiness. And yet amidst all of the back and forth, the newly merged Kalokalo tribe came together to unanimously oust Elizabeth Olson. But before she went, Elizabeth was sure to throw Angelina Keeley‘s shadiness under the bus to her fellow Goliaths. How will they react to Angelina the morning after or how will it play into the hands of our newest super alliance, “Strike Force,” headed by Angelina’s target Christian Hubicki and his closest ally Nick Wilson?
In this week’s power rankings I maintain that Christian and Nick are still the two most powerful players in the game and likeliest to make it to the final. Below I’ve ranked the top 12 with my assessments on the shelf life of “Strike Force,...

“Carl Boudreaux was definitely my nail in the coffin,” Elizabeth Olson revealed to Gold Derby in our exclusive exit interview the morning after her “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” elimination. Elizabeth’s plan at tribal council was to try to convince the Goliath tribe that Angelina Keeley had betrayed them when she told Elizabeth she was going home, and that’s when all of the whispering started. Things were looking good for Elizabeth’s chances, until “I came to Carl and Carl was like, ‘I don’t even want to hear you, Elizabeth!’ He said that very loud. And so that really shot me down.” Listen to our “Survivor” exit interview above.

“I apologize to my tribe. I wasn’t trying to be sneaky!” Angelina Keeley declared during Wednesday’s contentious “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” tribal council. (Read our episode recap here.) After Elizabeth Olson spilled the beans that Angelina had told her she was going home, Angelina’s Goliath tribe mates saw that as a sign of her trying to secure a jury vote. Angelina vehemently denied the accusation, but as host Jeff Probst surmised, “Whether you meant it or not is a little irrelevant. People have a perception.” Will Angelina’s mistake come back to haunt her? Vote in our poll below.

The highly anticipated merge finally arrived in “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” on Wednesday night, with the underdog tribe at a slight 6-7 disadvantage over the herculean tribe. Which castaway fell victim to the merge and became the first member of the jury?
