20th Century Fox has unveiled a new trailer for director Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated film, Exodus: Gods And Kings. The movie stars Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Mendelsohn and Ben Kingsley.
This is a film that requires an IMAX viewing and one that would have been presented in Cinemascope years ago. The scale of it looks like Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments and going by the visuals from this new trailer, Scott has mastered Epic as an artform.
20th Century Fox previewed parts of the film for the media on Tuesday. Variety’s Awards Editor Tim Gray writes the film falls into the,
“they don’t make ‘em like that anymore” category, with big battle scenes and aerial panoramas of ancient cities, rustic settlements and military camps, all rendered in 3D CGI glory. And the footage really shifted into high gear...

While Christian Bale admitted that you can't out-Heston Charlton Heston in playing the all-consuming Moses, the real question last night at Fox was if Ridley Scott can out-"Gladiator" "Gladiator" with "Exodus: Gods and Kings" (December 12). After glimpsing about a half-hour of powerful footage that left us wanting more, the answer is definitely yes (watch the new trailer below). In fact, Fox will probably have another Best Picture Oscar contender to go along with David Fincher's hot "Gone Girl." Scott's ambitious retelling of Moses as conflicted revolutionary is right up the Academy's alley. It should score a slew of above and below the line noms, including potential nods for Dariusz Wolski's gritty cinematography, Arthur Max's opulent production design, Janty Yates' authentic-looking costumes, James Harrison's thunderous sound design, Double Negative's incomplete yet impressive VFX, Alberto Iglesias' as-yet-unheard score and Billy Rich's...

Opening in theaters on December 12, go behind the scenes in the making of 20th Century Fox’s epic Exodus: Gods And Kings from director Ridley Scott.
The Noah movie opened the floodgates for biblical movies at the beginning of 2014 and to some, a welcome visit back to the Golden Age of Hollywood.
With Exodus bowing at the end of the year during awards season, Scott solidifies his status among the ranks of those larger-than-life directors – David Lean, Cecil B. DeMille, William Wyler, Joseph L. Mankiewicz – in his latest historical drama.
Casting is everything and with huge stars like Oscar-winners Christian Bale and Ben Kingsley, Oscar-nominee Sigourney Weaver and Joel Edgerton, the filmmaker may find himself at Hollywood’s big party in February. Last time Scott went epic was in May 2000 when Gladiator opened in theaters and later went on to win five Oscars, including Best Picture, at the 73rd Academy Awards.

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

Promised Land
Written by John Krasinski and Matt Damon, based on a story by Dave Eggers
Directed by Gus Van Sant
2012, USA, imdb, Josh Spiegel’s much more positive review
I walked out of the theatre disliking Promised Land and the more I reflect on the film, the less I like it.
On paper, there is a lot to love about the film: strong performances by John Krasinski and Matt Damon, supported by an excellent cast including Frances McDormand, Titus Welliver and Hal Halbrook; solid direction by Gus Van Sant, supported with gorgeous cinematography by Linus Sandgren and crisp editing by Billy Rich. And for a brief minute, during the impromptu debate between high school teacher Frank Yates (Hal Holbrook) and gas fracking advocate Steve Butler (Matt Damon), it seems like Promised Land has something to say about the death of nuance in political discourse, about the way that the...

Promised Land is the new contemporary drama directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk). Matt Damon plays Steve Butler, an ace corporate salesman who is sent along with his partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), to close a key rural town in his company’s expansion plans. With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) with support from a grassroots campaign led by another man (John Krasinski), as well as the interest of a local woman (Rosemarie DeWitt). Promised Land explores America at the crossroads where big business and the strength of small-town community converge. The film will be...
