There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

On 30 Rock, Liz Lemon’s terrible sometime-boyfriend Dennis Duffy, a.k.a. “The Beeper King,” insisted the pager business would boom again because “technology’s cyclical.” Every idea Dennis espoused was meant to be as nonsensical and willfully ignorant as that one, like when he told Jack Donaghy that, politically, he was a “social conservative, fiscal liberal.”
The world has somehow gone to hell enough that Dennis Duffy today seems like a prophet rather than a fool. “Social conservative, fiscal liberal” is basically the Republican Party platform in 2024, while...

In a perfect world, Leap Day would entail some celebrations. Not to worry, though. This 30 Rock episode, starring an iconic Jim Carrey and Andie MacDowell cameo, has your back. Gear up for blue and yellow-themed festivities and, of course, a fictional movie that can give even Groundhog Day a run for its money! Be careful about getting your eyes poked, though.
The titular ninth episode of the sixth season of the Tina Fey-starring satirical sitcom series honors this fake holiday, concocting a blend of tropes seen in most films centered around such celebratory occasions.
Jim Carrey is a fictional character, Dave Williams, in the 30 Rock universe!
Leap Day is portrayed in the show’s mythology as an occurrence that calls for parties and celebrations. And like all great holidays, this one, too, puts the emphasis on a cultural mascot. Here, that is a gilled entity who sports...

As Alec Baldwin’s legal challenges continue with Friday’s indictment stemming from the 2021 Rust shooting, he has made moves to shore up his finances, which includes the star starting to appear at fan conventions and having relisted his longtime Hamptons home for $10 million under the asking price from roughly a year ago.
In a video posted this week by real estate brokerage firm Saunders & Associates, Baldwin talks to the camera about his fond memories with the 10,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom home located in Amagansett on Long Island’s South Shore. The 30 Rock alum’s abode is now on the market for $19 million after he previously listed it for $29 million. The original listing was in September 2022, less than a year after a firearm handled by Baldwin on the New Mexico set of indie Western Rust was discharged on Oct. 21, 2021, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Wearing a nondescript gray T-shirt with a backstage pass dangling from his neck, Jeff Shell looked more like a snowy-haired roadie than a VIP as he milled about in the wings of the Sahara Tent ahead of Blink-182’s set at Coachella on April 14. The NBCUniversal CEO had spent the day at the festival with his wife, Laura, in anticipation of the band’s first show in nearly a decade. Later, he took a seat alongside a leather-clad Kourtney Kardashian, whose long-running “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” holds a significant presence in the NBCUniversal spread, with all 20 seasons of the reality show having recently moved from Hulu to Peacock. But Shell wasn’t there on business. He enjoys close ties with the band’s bassist and co-lead vocalist, Mark Hoppus, a friendship forged thanks to their kids attending the same school in L.A.

Analysis: actor’s complex public persona remains intact as he faces charges in death of Halyna Hutchins
Whatever else has happened, or will happen, in the vividly eventful career of movie star Alec Baldwin, his name is destined to be linked with that of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, whom he tragically shot dead on a movie set in New Mexico in 2021. Baldwin accidentally fired a live bullet from a revolver being used as a prop. Now he faces criminal charges of involuntary manslaughter, despite a private legal settlement Baldwin reportedly reached with the Hutchins family.
Alec Baldwin’s mercurial, defiant, combatively emotional behaviour – which has been part of his presence as a performer and public figure – has been in evidence since the shooting. He gave an emotional interview last August in which he blamed the armourer and the props assistant but declined to blame himself and even exhibited notes of histrionic self-pity,...

Sex has always ruled the genre long ago mislabeled “reality TV.” It’s present whenever you start the cameras rolling on a group of people, whether at their place of work or in a well-appointed villa with unlimited booze. Even a survivalist show like Naked and Afraid, which drops contestants in some of the planet’s most punishing environments, relies on the gimmick of teammates making first impressions without clothes on.
In that context, the Sunday premiere of Milf Manor — an awkward new dating show from TLC — is not exactly a watershed moment.

Alec Baldwin has had a career in TV and film for more than three decades. He is best known for his roles in 30 Rock, and has had roles in Beetlejuice, Glengarry Glen Ross and The Departed. He has also received acclaim for his impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.
He was starring in a western film called Rust in Santa Fe, New Mexico, when a prop firearm he was holding discharged, killing Halyna Hutchins, the director of photography, and injuring the director, police said.
Ukrainian cinematographer Hutchins, 42, was airlifted to hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel, authorities said, while director Joel Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance and treated for his injuries.
Baldwin is currently waiting to learn whether he will be charged, along with crew members, over the shooting.

On "30 Rock," jokes were blasted at the viewer at a rapid rate. There were more gags, in-jokes, and puns in every scene than could be seen by the naked eye. While the show was initially meant to more reflect creator Tina Fey's time on "Saturday Night Live," as it went on, the show took on a life as its own as the most joke-dense show on television.
In a show as tightly written as "30 Rock," every character played their part, from Jane Krakowski's attention-seeking and dramatic Jenna Maroney to Alec Baldwin's domineering and confident Jack Donaghy. But one of the show's most consistently funny recurring side characters was Chris Parnell's Dr. Leo Spaceman.
A grossly and dangerously incompetent physician, Dr. Spaceman (pronounced "spuh-chem-in" by everyone except Tracy Morgan's goofy Tracy Jordan) would appear whenever the show's characters needed medical advice or attention, often providing both very poorly.

When it comes to Pam Hupp — the small-town Missouri resident currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder — no one thing defines her. And no one knows that better than the people at NBC. Just a periphery character in the 2014 “Dateline” report titled, “The House on Sumac Drive,” Hupp’s presence steadily grew as NBC News continued to investigate the death of Betsy Faria, resulting in four follow-up episodes over the next five years. The final entry, also titled “The Thing About Pam,” teed up “Dateline’s” first podcast, which is now the basis for NBC’s scripted limited series of the same name.
One could argue audiences can’t get enough of Hupp’s twisted tale — or, just as easily, that Jack Donaghy’s lessons in synergy have not been forgotten at the Peacock. Either way, the quantity of stories derived from one woman’s horrific actions necessitate varied takes on her motivation,...

When the skilled dramatic actor Caroll O’Connor took a comedic turn as Archie Bunker in “All in the Family” in 1971, critics noticed the layered performance. Looking back decades later, Ronald Brownstein wrote in The Atlantic: “‘All in the Family’ commanded national attention to a degree almost impossible to imagine in today’s fractionated entertainment landscape. Archie Bunker’s catchwords — stifle, meathead, and dingbat — all became national shorthand. Scholars earnestly debated whether the show punctured or promoted bigotry.”
A Smithsonian Magazine article by Sascha Cohen stated that the fictional working-class TV dad “was retrograde, incapable of dealing with the modern world, a simpleton left behind by the social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, a pathetically displaced ‘historical loser.’ (Producer Norman Lear) used him as a device to make racism and sexism look foolish and unhip, but liberals protested that as a ‘loveable bigot,’ Archie actually made intolerance acceptable. These days, eccentric, enigmatic tech founders are a dime a dozen. Heck, they have been for a decade now. “The Social Network” set a high bar for probing the callow mindsets driving so many new money decision-makers, and “Silicon Valley” parodied start-ups and their so-called geniuses for six seasons. That film came out in 2010, and that show has been over for two years. Yet our cultural fascination with the concept of an overnight success remains. It may never fade. The American dream is built on believing anyone with the right idea can become rich from it, and fast.

Despite their immediate on-screen chemistry as comic foils on the new NBC comedy “Mr. Mayor,” Ted Danson and Holly Hunter didn’t know each other prior to working on the show.
“I run in shallower circles then Holly,” Danson jokes. “At the Golden Globes, she’s sitting in the movie section I’m down in the TV section.”
In this bonus episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Danson and Hunter talk about their starring roles in “Mr. Mayor,” including their give and take, learning how to perform the rapid-fire jokes that are the hallmark of a Tina Fey and Robert Carlock script. They also share what it’s like to work in quarantine, and Danson, who plays the mayor of Los Angeles in the series, reveals whether he has any political aspirations of his own. The new NBC sitcom Mr. Mayor began life as a 30 Rock spinoff in which Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy, having conquered the corporate worlds of Ge and Kabletown, would run for mayor of New York City. Baldwin ultimately wouldn’t agree to a contract, at which point 30 Rock creator Tina Fey and her longtime collaborator Robert Carlock pivoted to another tall, multiple-Emmy-winning NBC institution: Ted Danson. They relocated the story to Los Angeles, because the Cheers and Good Place alum didn’t want to move, and voila, a series was born.

At the movies, January is the traditional dumping ground for box office bombs that the studios are eager to bury and forget. Unfortunately, NBC’s new sitcom Mr. Mayor — debuting this Thursday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c; I’ve seen the first two episodes — feels like the TV equivalent of that. It’s a real shame, because the combination of Ted Danson in a starring role and Tina Fey behind the scenes should be an easy slam dunk. But instead, the whole endeavor feels half-hearted and half-baked, with a thin concept and a glaring lack of laughs.

“There are no bad ideas, Lemon. Only good ideas that go horribly wrong.” – Jack Donaghy Thursday night’s “30 Rock” reunion special, which was really NBC’s upfront presentation and longform advertisement for parent company NBCUniversal’s new streaming platform Peacock, settled for a soft 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.5 million viewers. Those are not good numbers, but there are a few caveats that make them a little more understandable — and possibly even digestible for NBC executives. At first glance, the numbers look bad. “30 Rock: A One-Time Special” was outperformed outright in the 8 o’clock hour by ABC’s putt-putt golf competition “Holey Moley.” In the key demo in the same time slot, the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock nicety for NBC tied a rerun of CBS’ “Young Sheldon” and was topped by Univision’s “La Rosa De Guadalupe.” In terms of total viewers, in addition to “Holey Moley,” both “Young Sheldon...

Scripted by “30 Rock” co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the hour-long reunion special “episode” that aired Thursday on NBC (and some of its affiliate stations) brought the cast back together via Zoom calls and side plots with impressively high production values as everyone unites for the common cause of praising NBCUniversal and its new streaming service, Peacock. While there were plenty of “30 Rock” inside jokes as the characters got to update us on where they’ve been since the 2013 series finale and how stir-crazy they are in Covid-19 quarantine, the special was more of an opportunity for NBCUniversal to promote NBCUniversal.
Tasked with replacing a newly controversial Jenna (Jane Krakowski) for a potential “Tgs” reunion, Liz (Fey) Zoom interviews NBCUniversal personalities Sofia Vergara (NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”), Kandi Burruss (Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”) and Khloe Kardashian (E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”). NBC for seven years offered advertisers a novel proposition: Pay us money to put your products in our show and let the series’ writers make fun of them. Oddly enough, it worked.
Fans may remember the offbeat sitcom “30 Rock” – a comedy ostensibly about the inner workings and strange characters behind a long-running TV variety show not unlike “Saturday Night Live” – for Alec Baldwin’s portray of oblivious corporate executive Jack Donaghy and Tina Fey’s nerdy Liz Lemon. Madison Avenue recalls the show for its ability to get blue-chip marketers like Kraft, Verizon, Snapple and Dr Pepper to cough up thousands of dollars for product placements that criticized the sponsors for even showing up. Advertisers seemed happy to keep feeding the mouth that bit them.

Duh-duh. Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh. Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh. Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo. That elaborately recreated and stunningly accurate rendition of the 30 Rock theme song can only mean one thing: 30 Rock is almost back!
