The Rookie: Feds had some expectations heaped on it from the moment the spinoff was announced.
The Rookie is the perfect balance of comedy, action, and romance, and as such, those were to be expected of the spinoff.
So, how did it fare?
It's worth noting that throughout the first half of The Rookie Feds Season 1, the show was establishing itself by developing characters and finding its place in The Rookie universe.
Sadly, it took so many episodes to get that done, but by the end of the season, it became much more solid.
The format was not new, with it being a spin-off.
Episodes open with a crime beginning to be committed, in progress, or after the fact. Some openers were a hit or a miss but mostly entertaining.
The season premiere introduced the characters and set up the story.
The show had a two-episode back-door pilot in the original,...

Something is wrong in the waters off Block Island. It begins as a rumour, the sharing of fishermen's stories. On a drive home at night a fish falls out of the sky, landing on a car. Soon there are dead fish washed up on the beach on great number. Dead birds, too. it's a lot to deal with for Harry (Chris Sheffield) who is already in a state of anxiety due to the strange behaviour of his father Tom (Neville Archambault). Are the old man's blackouts and strange ideas a product of developing dementia, or something else? As Harry starts to have strange experiences himself, the matter grows still more urgent.
Further stress factors exacerbate this. His running out of patience with his friend Dale (Jim Cummings), whose passion for conspiracy theories is now starting to feel too close to home. Then there's his sister Audry (Michaela McManus), who arrives at.

The Block Island Sound is a hair-raising new horror creation from Kevin and Matthew McManus, Emmy-nominated writers and producers of American Vandal and Cobra Kai, and filmmakers behind past Fantasia hits Funeral Kings and Slumlord (aka 13 Cameras).
Atmospheric, smart and compellingly character-driven, the film captures a real sense of isolation and paranoia, with an experiential feel for its environment, brought to life with striking cinematography and sound design. Sheffield, McManus, and Archambault are fantastic, joined by a strong supporting cast that includes Jim Cummings (Thunder Road), Jeremy Holm and Willie C. Carpenter (Men in Black). The Block Island Sound is at once intimate and unconventionally grandiose, delivering thrills while touching on a range of the signature worries of our times, from conspiracy theories and climate change to unpreventable familial breakdowns. Remote fishing communities have never been scarier.

You'll be kicking yourself if you don't see "The Stanford Prison Experiment" in theaters. Seriously. And, no, I'm not just saying that because I happen to know director Kyle Patrick Alvarez socially or that it's a Sundance Jury Award-winning movie or that it depicts one of the most shocking events to occur at one of America's greatest Universities over the past fifty years.* The real reason is that besides the questions it raises about the human condition and our ability to descend to abject cruelty, "Stanford" features a once in a life time cast that will dominate Hollywood for the next 15 to 20 years.* *It also has earned strong reviews to date including a 71 grade on Metacritic and 78% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on true events, the new drama chronicles the 1971 psychological experiment that found Stanford University students sorted into the roles of prison guard or a generic prisoner. In theory,...

True life dramas are sometimes inherently less thrilling because you might already know the outcome. In the case of The Stanford Prison Experiment, the film is as riveting as the actual study was, and perhaps even more so. Director Kyle Patrick Alvarez and his amazing ensemble cast do real justice to the actual event and in turn put forward a captivating look at human nature. Unsettling, even upsetting at times, it’s a challenging movie, but one that’s about as good as any so far in 2015. It’s a small flick, but one that really demands to be seen. It opens this weekend and truly is a must see. The Stanford Prison Experiment is a slightly dramatized look at the historic study of the same name by Dr. Phillip Zimbardo (played by Billy Crudup). The professor selected 24 male students out of 75 applicants and had them take on completely randomly...

The Stanford Prison Experiment, a tough, unnerving watch based on a real-life research experiment held in the early '70s at Stanford University, says as much about human nature and the effect of power over both the powerful and the powerless as it does about modern society's penchant for reality television and the constant desire to not only witness, but revel in the downfall of others. Are you a good personc You'd probably say "yes", but how closely are any of us looking when asked the questionc The titular experiment was started by Dr. Philip Zimbardo (played by Billy Crudup), a Stanford professor who took 24 college kids over the summer of 1971 and, with the flip of a coin, assigned twelve to be guards and twelve to be prisoners in a simulated prison on the Stanford campus over the course of two weeks. An ensemble led by the likes of Ezra Miller...

The story is true, and even decades later, the story remains shocking and unbelievable. In 1971, Dr. Philip Zimbardo assigned twenty-four male undergraduates to be either a guard or a prisoner, set up a prison simulation, and then sat back to watch the results unfold. But he never realized what he was unleashing. Soon the "guards" began giving in to their worst impulses to maintain control, the prisoners were treated brutally, and things soon spiralled out of control. This is the story. "The Stanford Prison Experiment," directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, brings together the ensemble of Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Thirlby, Michael Anganaro, Logan Miller, Thomas Mann, Keir Gilchrist, Johnny Simmons, Moises Arias, Jack Kilmer, Chris Sheffield, Ki Hong Lee, and James Frecheville, to tell the tale and it's a movie you won't want to miss. Prometheus (20th Century Fox) Ridley Scott’s quasi-prequel to his 1979 classic “Alien” has an intergalactic exploratory team (Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba) arriving on a uncharted planet, where they discover what appears to be a dormant alien spacecraft and what might be the first discovery of intelligent life outside of Earth. Of course, everything goes straight to hell before you can scream “Don’t touch that egg!” Sumptuous visuals and strong performances from the cast (not to mention a nearly-perfect first half) can’t compensate for gaping plot and logic holes that nearly sink the proceedings in the film’s protracted second half. It feels as though some very crucial footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps, as with “Alien” and “Aliens” we’ll see a “Director’s Cut” of “Prometheus” arriving on DVD within the next year. In the meantime,...

Rich also emphasizes how Levi’s great-grandfather Lee Roy was the first to play tennis in college. ‘General Education’ marks the feature film directorial [ Read More ]...

My biggest concern when Napoleon Dynamite was first released was that it would become a huge hit and hundreds of wannabe copycats would appear in its wake. Well, it has now been eight years since Napoleon Dynamite broke into the mainstream consciousness and copycats are still trickling out, such as Tom Morris' General Education. General Education opens as a flamboyant (he wears an ascot!), lisping tennis scout (Federico Dordei) flirtatiously offers Levi Collins (Chris Sheffield) a full scholarship to Forest Wood. Shortly thereafter, Levi finds out that he has failed Ms. Bradford's (Elaine Hendrix) science class which prompts him to refer to her as a dyke. Next we meet Levi's self-proclaimed sidekick, Charles (Skylan Brooks), a 13-year old black kid with no shoes who does Levi's bidding. So within the first five or so minutes of the film, it becomes apparent that no minorities or anyone in the Lgbt...

Title: General Education Director: Tom Morris (‘Ships Wrecked Cove’) Starring: Chris Sheffield (‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’), Maiara Walsh (TV’s ‘Mean Girls 2,’ ‘Switched at Birth’), Larry Miller, Janeane Garofalo and Skylan Brooks (‘Our Family Wedding’) It often takes an unexpected, radical event in a person’s life to truly change the path they embark on and alter the decisions they make. That’s certainly true with Levi Collins, a high school tennis superstar whose life is mapped out for him by his parents until a failing grade hinders his chance at graduating from high school. On paper, General Education looks like a passable summer teen comedy. Written by newcomers Elliot Feld, Jaz Kalkat and Tom Morris, and directed by Morris, the film seemingly has the right ingredients: A good-looking, but slightly geeky high school hero (Chris Sheffield); an overbearing dad (Larry Miller); clueless mom (Janeane Garofalo); eccentric little sister (Mckaley Miller) and a passel of weird loser friends (Skylan Brooks, Harvey Guillen, Sean Przano and Seth Cassell). Oh, and lest we forget, there’s a beautiful girl (Maiara Walsh) and a bully (Tom Maden) thrown in for good measure, too....

Reviews This Week: "General Education" "Hit and Run" "Neighboring Sounds" "The Revenant" "Sleepwalk with Me" "Somewhere Between" "Teddy Bear" "General Education" Director Tom Morris was born after John Hughes made his suburban teen comedies, but he adopts a Hughesian view of high school for his feature debut, “General Education.” Promising tennis player Levi Collins (Chris Sheffield) chooses the court over a final presentation, gaining an athletic scholarship to his father’s alma mater, but flunking science. Levi opts not to tell his parents that he failed to graduate and attends summer school on the sly – all ten days of it. On a technical level, “General...

Tom Morris’s General Education, a tepid, well-meaning saga of high school woes, could be screened immediately on the Disney Channel with nary a cut, and that’s the problem. The whole enterprise lacks a soupcon of edginess, a modicum of wit, or an iota of originality.
Endlessly insipidity aside, the screenplay by Elliot Feld, Jaz Kalkat, and Morris was clearly pulled together for no other reason than the need for a bunch of buddies to start calling themselves “filmmakers” -- at least that’s how the super-clichéd, slightly offensive final product comes off. Well, you might not be offended if you don’t object to viewing a screaming queen of a pederastic college recruiter endlessly hitting on young men. Then there’s Charles (Skylan Brooks), an often barefooted, black thirteen-year old playing Stepin Fetchit to the film’s teen hero. No shoes? He runs faster that way. The young man does swim,...

While watching Simon get lured into Flova’s underwater realm, viewers of Clear Blue will experience a similar feeling of being drawn into it’s world of fantasy. As part of their thesis project at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles, director Lindsay MacKay, producer S. Brent Martin and cinematographer Mattias Troelstrup teamed up to develop and shoot a short film that, despite it’s 20-minute length, has the look and feel of a feature film. And now, as Clear Blue continues to earn awards and praise, festivals are lining up to screen the film. Clear Blue tells the story of Simon (Chris Sheffield), a brand new lifeguard who’s assigned the early shift at his local swimming pool. Simon becomes obsessed with Flova (Nancy Linehan Charles), an elderly woman and the pool’s only patron during those morning hours, after he discovers her unbelievable capacity to stay submerged under water.

Watch the trailer for Clear Blue, a narrative short screening at SXSW this year in the “Medium Cool” category, and you’ll probably be intrigued if not a little hesitant to discover why a naïve young lifeguard, Simon (Chris Sheffield), is tripping over his swim shorts for a woman in her 60’s (Nancy Linehan Charles).
Go see Clear Blue and you’ll discover that there’s more behind the teenager’s obsession with and desire for the early-morning regular at the pool.
The film opens in silence with a lovely clip of foreshadowing as a pair of red swim trunks float slowly to the surface of an indoor swimming pool. One of my favorite moments in the film is Simon’s first early-morning shift in which he stands before the empty pool with his lifeguard whistle around his neck and practices chiding imaginary swimmers,...
