Film London has joined forces with the British Council to launch "Shakespeare's Sister," a short film initiative to develop some of the UK's best emerging women filmmaking talent and help tackle gender disparity within the film industry. Two women-led teams, which can include transgender women, will be offered £15,000 (about $23,000) in production funding to create short films inspired by the works of Shakespeare. They will also receive practical support and mentoring from Film4, along with a year's Women in Film & TV membership. The completed films will form a key part of the program of work Film London is commissioning to commemorate 400 years of Shakespeare...

David Alan Grier did an extensive interview with NPR that was mostly about Porgy & Bess, but he did take time to address his classic Men On Film characters from In Living Color. "Damon Wayans and I would rate movies using snaps. The fun of In Living Color was exposing black culture, and in that sketch, gay culture, that I don't think America had ever seen at that point. I had already done Dreamgirls on Broadway, and being in a musical and working with other performers who were gay, I was privy to that vocabulary backstage. They were being themselves. So a lot of it was hijacked from what I heard in the theater and what was permeating around. Now at that time, if a gay person was going to read you — to tell you off — it was always accompanied by snaps. Now I don't know if it was a gay thing,...

Bookmakers have slashed the odds of Cher Lloyd becoming this year's X Factor winner. The 17-year-old singer's performance of Shakespeare's Sister's 'Stay' was rated as "the best of the season" by Simon Cowell and it has proved popular with punters as well. Paddy Power has now cut her odds of taking home the crown to 9/2. A spokesperson for the bookies told Digital Spy: "I think it's fair to say Cher Lloyd well and truly pulled it out of the bag on Saturday (more)...

Cheryl Cole has heaped praise on Cher Lloyd's performance on last night's X Factor. Lloyd sang Shakespeare's Sister's 'Stay' on the Halloween special and broke down in tears at the end of the song. Speaking on The Xtra Factor about her act, mentor Cole said: "I think it was a really important that she got a moment to sing. It's one of those contradictory things, where if she carried on rapping, people would be saying, is that all she can do. "I thought her performance was incredible, I loved it. You can't not love her." During the show, Simon Cowell (more)...

Cher Lloyd broke down after her performance on 'The X Factor' last night (30.10.10). The 17-year-old singer performed Shakespeare's Sister's song 'Stay', amazing the show's judges, but leaving her sobbing as they praised her performance. Head judge Simon Cowell told her: ''That wasn't just the performance of the night. It was the performance of the whole season.'' Cher – who has until this week put a rap into each of her performances – also won over judge Louis Walsh. He said: ''I don't know why you are crying, that was an absolutely amazing performance. You are not a one-trick pony rapper.'' Her mentor on ..

Coronation Street star Kym Marsh has claimed that she was glad to be voted off Popstar To Operastar earlier this month. Marsh and Marcella Detroit were both eliminated in the reality show's semi-final round on February 12, leaving Darius Campbell and Bernie Nolan to battle it out in last Friday's final. However, Marsh has now insisted that the result was a relief as she was finding it too difficult to balance her singing commitments with her role as Weatherfield's Michelle Connor. The 'Coronation Street' actress and the former Shakespears Sister singer were knocked out at the ITV show's semi-final stage, leaving Bernie Nolan and Darius Campbell to battle it out in next Friday's (19.02.10) final. Danny Jones has become the fourth contestant to be voted off Popstar To Operastar. The McFly singer found himself in the bottom two alongside Shakespeare's Sister frontwoman Marcella Detroit following the public vote. The four judges were asked to decide which star was to remain in the competition. Meat Loaf chose Detroit, while Rolando Villazón opted for Jones "based on this performance". Third up was Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, who went for Jones after some deliberation. (more)...

Danny Jones has failed to make the semi finals of Popstar Operastar.
After finding himself in the bottom two for the second week running, Danny was up against Marcella Detroit for a place on next week’s show.
The two singers split the panel, with Meat Loaf and Rolando voting to save Mc Fly’s Danny while Katherine and Lawrence voted for Marcella. The result of the public vote was then consulted, and Alan Titchmarsh revealed that Marcella had more public support, therefore sending Danny home.
A fair result we think but we’d love to hear your opinions below.

Popstar To Operastar is back and we’re only one week off the semi final.
After all the usual filler clips and introductions Bernie Nolan took to the stage and we can see why she is already favourite to win with the bookies. Not only did she sing amazingly well, she did it while dancing, flirting and managed to hit a high c sharp at the end of her song. She blew us away and the judges agreed.
Rolando: Chaka chaka chaka ( don’t worry, we’ve no idea what that means either!)
Meat Loaf: You owned that lady!
Danny Jones
Danny was in the bottom two last week and we could see that he was worried about ending up there again tonight. He made McFly practice opera songs with him during the week and we think it paid off. Danny always has a great stage presence which helps get him through each song.

She may be one of the world famous Nolan Sisters and have legions of fans all around the world, but Bernie Nolan admits that taking part in ITV’s Popstar To Operastar is the scariest thing that she has ever done.
In an interview with The People, Bernie admitted that while she is desperate to win the show, she is overwhelmed by the amount of things she still has to learn about the singing style.
“I am so, so nervous,” she said. “I’ve been singing professionally since I was a teenager and have performed in huge arenas around the world.
“I’ve even learned to sing in Japanese because we were bigger than The Beatles out there and sold nine million records.
“But this is harder than anything I’ve ever done. I had never seen an opera in my life and didn’t know anything about it.

Popstar To Opera Star continues on ITV1 tonight and we can’t wait to watch Delectable Darius once more. Although we are liveblogging the show, we may be about an hour behind the rest of you, curse that awful Celebrity Big Brother!
We start with a tedious introduction of the judges. We know who Meat Loaf is! Move on please.
Darius Campbell
Darius kicks off tonight’s performances and someone on Twiter compared him to Mr Bean….which kind of ruined the illusion for us! This week Darius will be singing in French and apparently his mispronunciation is leading him to sing about asses. We thought that Darius’ performance was a lot stronger tonight, he definitely performed it well. We could so see him waving that cape about and being torn apart by an angry bull!
Judges Comments:
Rolando: You gave energy, you gave a performance but the French was not all there.

So we’re liveblogging tonight’s first ever Popstar To Operastar and if it wasn’t presented by Alan Titchmarsh we might actually be excited.
It’s an interesting concept though, they are aiming to turn former pop singers such as Kym Marsh and that Saturday’s girl into bona fide opera singers. The contestants are being mentored by the lovely Katherine Jenkins and the snakey eyebrowed Rolando Villazon and critiqued by Meat Loaf and Lawrence Le flouncy blouse (aka Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen).
The show kicks off with loads of VTs. Katherine and Rolando tell us how amazingly emotional Opera is and Meat Loaf boasts about all his experience.
Jimmy Osmond
It all runs on a bit and then Jimmy Osmond emerges, he’ll be singing that Cornetto song. He rehearses too much and tires out his vocal chords. Will he be ok singing tonight? Oh the drama!!

Quite by chance, pop star Marcella Detroit was introduced to some sublime arias just a week before being invited to become a contestant on Popstar to Operastar. “A friend gave me some Maria Callas CDs, which were wonderful. I love her singing – I really respond to the emotions she brings to her arias. Then, just a week later I got the call from the producers of this show. How could I say no?”
American Marcella, who enjoyed many years of hits with the pop duo Shakespear’s Sister, could not resist the offer. “It’s so exciting,” enthuses the singer, who took lead vocals on the hit single, “Stay”, which remained at the top of the UK charts for eight weeks. The duo still hold the record for the longest running female group to have a number one single.
“It’s such a great opportunity to be trained by these fantastic vocal coaches.
