From Guardians Of The Galaxy to Godzilla, and Noah to Paddington, our pick of 2014's finest film soundtracks and scores.
After Gravity blew your eardrums out of the airlock in 2013 with its seamless mix of sound effects and music, it was hard to imagine a film wowing just as much the year after, but 2014 was a year in which movie soundtracks became, if anything, even more intricate, from films about the nature of being a musician to those that replicated the noise of human existence for alien senses.
Before 2014 becomes a distant ringing in the ears, here are the top 14 movie soundtracks of the year.
1. Under the Skin (Mica Levi)
Once you've heard Mica Levi's soundtrack to Under the Skin, everything else sounds both disappointing and even more exciting. I say 'soundtrack' because, like the best movies, Jonathan Glazer's sci-fi understands that sound and music are two halves of the same hastily-conceived metaphor.

A great film score complements without burrowing too far into the ideas, wrestles with genre without locking the picture into a fixed identity, amplifies actors and actress’ choices without spilling the beans. A composer’s job is a balancing act. More and more, movie music finds itself backing off too far, devolving into incidental muzac, or going too far, where full-blast orchestral sounds pummel us like the Transformers’ energon punches. There’s a sweet spot, and the best film scores of the year ride it for an entire runtime. I shouldn’t be surprised that my favorite film scores of the year line-up closely with my favorite films of the year. As someone who goes to the movies with his ears as wide open as his eyes, I found myself captivated by 2014’s audio-visual offerings. Below, what I’d consider the "best" of the year (along with a few runner-ups,...

It probably had little impact on whether you liked The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but some fans were disappointed when the film’s end credits were not punctuated by the teaser that’s become expected from all the Marvel superhero franchises. At the end of director Marc Webb’s first Spider-Man movie, a mysterious figure confronts the imprisoned Dr. Curt Connors and asks, “Did you tell the boy the truth about his father?” But for the sequel, fans were left with a somewhat random promotional clip for Fox’s most recent X-Men movie.

As witnessed with both “Qui-Gon’s Funeral” and just recently with a certain track in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier," soundtrack listings can spell a film out before its release or simply obscure its plotline further. Comic book adaptations have to be on the ball in this regard, and even though they’re determined to show every corner of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in trailers, Sony are playing quite coy with Hans Zimmer’s score. Details on Zimmer’s 32-track score have just been released (via Comic Book Movie), and they aim to leave fans feverishly wondering what listings like “There He Is,” “Here,” and “I’m Electro” could mean in the final film (that last one’s pretty clear, actually). The more interesting aspect of the soundtrack however is Zimmer’s collaborations: Johnny Marr (returning from his gig on the first installment), Pharrell Williams, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, and Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger.

Yesterday we were invited to a special screening of footage from Marc Webb’s forthcoming superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which included the first 15 minutes in addition to a two pivotal scenes. We won’t go into too much detail about what we saw, but here are some of our takeaways from what was revealed. Suffice to say, there’s plenty of reasons to start getting excited.
More Focus on the Untold Story
One of the benefits to building worlds is that you get to give the audience little bits of the story over time. The information we were given on the mystery surrounding Peter’s parents in The Amazing Spider-Man was a little scarce, but for the follow-up it seems like we’ll be getting a much more sizeable chunk of that story. Again, no details, but the film starts on a serious and tender note before we...

At SXSW Film Festival's first-ever film keynote presentation, director Marc Webb revealed a vision for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (opening May 2) that is bigger, more spectacular, and less tethered to reality than its predecessor. Responding to fanboy fears that the second installment of the rebooted franchise will, like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, become bloated with two villains, he promised that the attention would be focused squarely on Jamie Foxx's Electro. As for Dane Dehaan's Green Goblin, he would be a secondary threat, while Paul Giamatti's Rhino would...

Andrew Garfield is back slinging webs, punishing evildoers and suffering just the right amount of superhero angst in the first official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to last year's franchise reboot. The trailer opens with Peter Parker pondering power and responsibility, while Spidey zips through the city catching cop cars and dodging machine gun bullet fire — just a little "traffic jam" he casually tells Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone).

With double eliminations each week, the remaining singers push their vocal boundaries to make it through to the top 10.
The Voice has always been a show of upsets -- not necessarily because the wrong singers are eliminated too early, but because so many singers are sent home every week in general. America said goodbye to a whopping eight singers on Thursday night, and nearly every upcoming week until the finals will rid the competition of two singers, regardless of whose team they’re from. That means any of the coaches -- Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine – could be out of the running as early as next week.

Friendly neighbourhood supergroup assembled. Prolific film composer Hans Zimmer, responsible (it seems) for soundtracking virtually every major film for the last twenty years, has gathered a supergroup of musicians to score the forthcoming sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. Zimmer has enlisted the talents of Pharrell Williams, The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, Incubus guitarist Michael Einziger, and the-half-of-Eurythmics-who-is-not-Annie-Lennox, Dave Stewart, to score The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams -- known as one half of production duo The Neptunes and pretty much this past summer's sole musical king (remember Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself to Dance"?) -- have made beautiful movie music together before.
The two teamed up for the soundtrack to "Despicable Me," with Williams penning a handful of lovable, hum-along songs (Williams returned for the sequel, Zimmer did not), and Williams even provided drums for Zimmer's militaristic "Man of Steel" score. So it's not all that surprising that they would reteam for next summer's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." What is kind of a shock is who they brought along for the ride.

We know his music ... but yesterday in L.A., we finally saw Avicii's face -- as the DJ behind the smash hit "Wake Me Up" left a Hollywood nightclub. The 24-year-old Swedish DJ was leaving Hooray Henry's ... when we asked how it felt for a guy from an electronic music background to become such a huge force in the rock world. For the record, Avicii doesn't sing on "Wake Me Up" -- the voice you hear is singer Aloe Blacc.

On Avicii’s first full-length album, “True,” out today, he seems determined to show that while he may be best known as an Edm producer and DJ, trying to pigeonhole him into any one category will only prove foolish. Following the success of such tracks as “Levels” and “Silhouettes,” Avicii vaulted to a new mainstream level with the success of “Wake Me Up,” the first single from “True.” In the U.S., the single, featuring soul singer/rapper Aloe Blacc on vocals and Incubus’s Mike Einziger on acoustic guitar, has climbed into the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, while it has gone...

When Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger got the call that superstar DJ/producer Avicii (aka Tim Bergling) wanted to meet with him, he admits he wasn’t sure why. “I wasn’t too familiar with Tim’s world, and, also, specifically with Tim’s music. I knew the song ‘Levels,’ and I knew him as an electronic music producer, but I didn’t know how that would work with what I do.” The answer, it turns out, is fabulously. The two co-wrote “Wake Me Up,” the first single from Avicii’s “True,” out Sept. 17. With its foot-stomping, hand-clapping, acoustic appeal (anchored by a fierce beat), “Wake Me Up”...

Incubus's upcoming concert in the Philippines has elicited calls for a boycott by religious protestors. A text message campaign was launched ahead of the 'Nice to Know You' group's July 28 gig in Manila, with protestors urging Philippines residents to avoid the show. The text message read: "Prayer Alert !! A rock band called Incubus s comin 2perform at d Araneta Coliseum on July 28. We mUST pRAY this group dUZnt even step on2 Philippine soil so that they dONT impart their spirits in2 our youth!! (sic)." The group's prime objection to the band's Manila concert is over the name Incubus, which they say has been Biblically defined as "male demon believed to lie on sleeping persons". Mike Einziger, Incubus's guitarist, reacted to the boycott campaign by telling Rolling Stone: "I've heard (more)...

Band's new clip is an artfully subtle affair, much like their new album, If Not Now, When?

Incubus' brand-new "Promises, Promises" video is a thing of beautiful simplicity — little more than the band performing in and around projected images, dancing lights and slowly undulating colors.
To say it's a departure from the rocket-launcher guitars and skittering electro frippery of their past is a bit of an understatement; then again, pretty much everything about Incubus these days — especially their upcoming If Not Now, When? album — is a departure.
An intentional one, of course. Which is part of the reason they chose "Promises" as the proper first single from When?, which is due July 12. It represents everything they hoped to achieve with the new album.
"It's about whittling down the process to really simple forms, finding real beauty in stark simplicity,...

Today marks the 53rd birthday of the greatest person in the history of the universe: Prince.
As a performer, producer, musician and songwriter, he's simply the best in the business (and he's apparently quite the baller, too). And though he's been making music for five decades now, he's still on top of his game: he just wrapped the massively-successful "Welcome 2 America" tour, and last year's 20Ten proved that he's still more than capable of penning a hot jam or ten.
And while Prince has gone on record as hating cover versions of his songs, there are plenty of artists who have done versions of his hits ... and, surprise, surprise, they all rule, too. So, in celebration of his big day, here are ten of best covers we could dig up.
"Nothing Compares 2 U," as performed by Sinead O’Connor
While not exactly a Prince cover (he wrote the song for the Family,...

HollywoodNews.com: Incubus’ frontman Brandon Boyd has accomplished a handful of awards with his band, but now the singer is going out on a solo effort. He is happy to announce the release of his first solo album, “The Wild Trapeze,” which hits shelves today.
“This group of songs was born of a very different process than the many my band and I have been employing for our almost two decades at work now. The Wild Trapeze began as pot induced meanderings on my dusty acoustic guitar while Incubus was off of the road, and has slowly been morphing into things that I originally could never have imagined,” says Brandon Boyd. “So much of my identity, both personally and creatively has been attached to and related to Incubus. For better or worse! And I do believe that every person in every corner of the world asks themselves at some point on their ride,...

When MTV News caught up with Incubus backstage just before their Friday-night set at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco last week, frontman Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger and bass player Ben Kenney shared their personal experiences with Beatles songs, their different approach to soundchecks and the stress of putting together a greatest-hits album. But perhaps the most revealing confession came from Einziger, who admitted that he once played one of his own songs on a video game and was massacred.
"I played our song 'Stellar,' and my then-14-year-old sister absolutely schooled me," Einziger said. "It was a little humbling."
Boyd had a similar experience with music-based games. "I tried it once and I sucked," he said. But that doesn't mean they're down on "The Beatles: Rock Band," which drops next Wednesday, September 9. "[The Beatles] wrote music that as much as you wanted to get it out of your head,...

Just before they took the stage at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco yesterday, Incubus took some time out to lounge in their cabana and talk to MTV News about the dangers of putting together a greatest hits record, their various side projects and my T-Shirt.
"I'm excited about this dragon blowing out the birthday candles on your shirt," guitarist Mike Einziger said even before I could ask a question. "I like his little party hat." The shirt in question is a design from Threadless called "Wishless," which depicts a fire-breathing dragon attempting to blow out the candles on a birthday cake. It's a heartbreaking image because if you look close, there's a single tear running down his face. The joke is on him — he'll never blow those candles out. I bought it because it reflects my philosophy about birthdays: That no matter how hard you try (or many...
