At school, the homophobic bullying was worst on the rugby pitch. But the Steelers helped me rediscover my love for the game – and myself
When I read Dan Palmer’s brave and honest coming out column in the Sydney Morning Herald last week, suddenly I was jolted back to a dark place seven years ago when I almost took my own life. The former Wallabies prop described a moment when he was driving recklessly, the feeling of “death felt preferable to anybody discovering [he] was gay.”
For me, I was working as a television reporter in Townsville in 2013 and driving to an interview. Suddenly I felt this heavy urge to have an accident. With all my strength I pulled over and called my best friend who told me to go to the doctor. I did immediately. He prescribed me antidepressants which helped fight off the black dog that had been chasing me since high school.

To put it simply, The Package is a short film, written and directed by Damon Rickard, about how far a man is prepared to go to get something back that was stolen from him…
One of the great things about short films is that there is rarely time for establishing detailed characters or setting, so they jump straight into the meat of it. This is absolutely true with The Package, as no more than twenty seconds in, the main character (whose name we never learn) is knocked out and wakes up tied to a chair in an unknown location.
Who is he? We don’t know. Why is he there? We don’t know. What follows is a scene of uncomfortable torture where we are drip fed just enough information to keep us on the cusp of understanding, always wanting to know more.

It’s a credit to a film festival like Frightfest that so many of its attendees not only are wannabe filmmakers, but actually put their proverbial money where their mouth is and make movies – be they shorts that screen as part of the ever-popular Short Film Showcase and the fantastic Shortcuts to Hell competition the festival held last year or, as in the case of Banjo, full length features.
Based on the short film of the same name, Banjo tells the story of Peltzer Arbuckle, a bullied office employee, humiliated by his megalomaniac boss, teasing colleagues and cheating partner. Stuck in his mundane, nightmarish reality, once news about an embarrassing sexual accident circulates the workplace, Peltzer decides to put up with his misery no more, and...

Welcome to the latest edition of our regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo, Sponsume and Kickstarter. This edition we’re spotlighting the new campaign from Damon Rickard, one of the directors behind the fantastic short horror film, The Tour.
Damon Rickard, one of the directors of The Tour, is back with a new project due to shoot in a few weeks called The Package, another short horror film – which he is writing and directing – about how far someone will go to get something back.
Written and directed by Damon Rickard, The Package wants to challenge your perception from the first minute to the last as all is not necessarily what it seems. The film is set to walk through those blurred lines that can exist between good and evil actions that men do.

Filmmaking is a process rife with uncertainty.
It devours a year or two of a filmmaker’s life, and is even capable of consuming an entire decade as Shockwave Darkside’s Jay Weismann testified to. For a multitude of filmmakers after the arduous challenge of achieving one’s vision, setting their tale into a coherent whole, the unfortunate fate or dance of making the rounds of festivals only to become one of the ghost films remembered by the minority is not outside of the realm of possibility.
The road to distribution is no set length. It can be either a short or long, with a propensity for ease of frustration.
To the case in point – Ryan Smith’s After, and Christian James and Dan Palmer’s Stalled. Two films separated by twelve months, graduates of FrightFest classes of 2012 and 2013, yet two films that both received a home entertainment release earlier this year.

One of the films high on my “must-see” Frightfest list last year, unfortunately work got in the way and I missed it. However I didn’t miss the furore surrounding its screenings, which – if memory serves, sold out on more than one occasion? Our man Jack Kirby did see it though and unfortunately he wasn’t too impressed, but I think he may have been suffering from zombie-movie fatigue having sat through opening night snoozefest The Dead 2.
Yet another example of the British zombie comedy, Stalled takes a more puerile route in pursuit of its laughs, but then when you set your film in a toilet where else is there for you to go? Essentially a one-man performance, the film sees hapless caretaker Wc (writer/actor Dan Palmer) trapped in the restroom when a zombie...

As is customary at Tadff, Saturday was Zombie Appreciation Night, which meant that the day’s programming consisted of two zombie-related films along with the International shorts program. Though I think zombies are by and large a bit played out, I still look forward to the night every year at the festival because they tend to choose interesting films that I might never have gotten to see in the theater otherwise.
The evening opened with a short called Montreal Zombie, which should give you a great idea of what it’s about. Essentially, three French-Canadian guys are holed up in an apartment, and one of them is filming their day-to-day interactions with what appears to be an old VHS camcorder. The film was actually very funny, with lots of outlandish humor, and the filmmakers did a lot with the very little they had to work with. This may be my...

Stalled (2013)
Starring: Dan Palmer, Antonia Bernath, Tamaryn Payne
Writer: Dan Palmer
Director: Christian James
Synopsis:
It’s Christmas eve and a soon to be shit-canned maintenance man is changing light bulbs and cleaning toilets, instead of drinking eggnog and making out with drunk receptionists at the annual office party.
Unfortunately for this forlorn floor-sweeper he chooses to use the ladies restroom the very second a zombie outbreak occurs! Will he bowl us over and flush away the undead or simply remain… Stalled?
He’s in the perfect place to be scared shitless.
Review:
Zombies, zombies, zombies! They aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, folks, so it’s best to get used to ‘em! If you’re tired of the more by-the-basics undead type flicks, there’s plenty of indie filmmakers out there trying to do different things within the sub-genre. Stalled comes to us from the dudes behind Freak Out.

Stalled
Written by Dan Palmer
Directed by Christian James
UK, 2013
Being trapped in a room full of zombies should be a bit more harrowing than the UK horror comedy Stalled would suggest. In the film, a hapless maintenance worker/janitor (Dan Palmer) gets trapped in the women’s lavatory during a company Christmas party. Things are exacerbated further when a slew of zombies start invading the loo, at which point the janitor realizes a woman named Heather (Antonia Bernath) is trapped with him a few stalls down.
With its low production qualities and lack of real story, Stalled doesn’t make for a very tense or scary zombie flick. Instead, the film functions more as a journey of introspection for the main character, with the faceless Heather as the pseudo-psychiatrist who helps him realize his emotional reclusion and personal failings. It’s all very schmaltzy, indeed (much like a bottle...

(Stalled plays as part of Toronto After Dark's Zombie Appreciation Night. It screens this Saturday, October 19th at 7:00pm at the Scotiabank Theatre) You may think to yourself "can an entire film play out within the confines of a workplace bathroom and not be some vain attempt by an indie filmmaker to show how cool they are?" More so, can an entire zombie film like Stalled do this? Within the brief history of the genre hapless and helpless victims have been trapped in homes, cellars and larger space alike. But a bathroom? I myself, doubtful as I was, am surprised to tell you that yes it does. It's Christmas Eve, and a soon-to-be-shit-canned maintenance gopher (Dan Palmer) is changing light bulbs and cleaning toilets instead of drinking egg...

When a group of indie filmmakers set out to construct a "gimmick" flick, they should remember to not let the gimmick overwhelm the whole thing. (Lots of "found footage" horror films suffer from this problem: all set-up and no follow-through.) The low-budget British horror/comedy called Stalled, fortunately, strikes an amiable balance between not only horror and comedy, but also between simple-minded novelty and a legitimate "movie" movie. Stalled, the latest genre combo from the British goofballs who made Freak Out back in 2004, is not a found footage presentation, but it does have a simple, amusing hook: the entire flick (it's a zombie movie) takes place inside of a bathroom. Indeed, most of the movie stays inside one specific bathroom stall. (Hence the title.) This sounds like a Saturday Night Live sketch at best -- or perhaps a decent short film -- but to its credit, Stalled somehow manages to...

Stalled is a new zombie feature from production company Cubicle Hero. This comedic title had a United Kingdom premiere August 24th and the reviews have been positive, so far. This film has been compared to another zombie comedy, Shaun of the Dead. And, fans can preview the film's promotional materials, here. Stalled involves a maintenance man, who is trapped in a washroom during a zombie apocalypse. W. C. (Dan Palmer) needs to find a way to escape, but his one man stall provides few exits. Can he find a way out, before the undead find a way in? Critic Luke Owen from Flickering Myth enjoyed the film: "Palmer's performance and willingness will lead to some really big laughs." Also, the trailer for the film offers hilarity as W.C. overreacts to his desperate situation. Horror and zombie fans can preview the film's trailer and official movie poster here. Director: Christian James.

Opening Night and Saturday
Frightfest 2013 opened on Thursday evening with Howard and John Ford’s The Dead 2: India, a sequel to their previous Africa-set zombie flick. To be honest, it wasn’t the most auspicious start to the weekend. A zombie epidemic reaches the Asian subcontinent and American engineer Nicholas (Joseph Millson) attempts to cross the country to reunite with his Indian girlfriend Ishani (Meenu Mishra), aided only by plucky orphan boy Javed (Anand Gopal). I didn’t catch The Dead, so the novelty of watching a Zombie film set anywhere other than Middle America (or Crouch End) was not lost on me.
The various locations around rural India are occasionally used rather well. Nicolas’s introductory scene is a slow pull out from extreme close up to a panoramic shot of him dangling from a wind turbine, which works really well and there several nicely implemented vistas. Much...

The latest comic horror venture from 'Freak Out' creators Christian James ('Kill Keith') and Dan Palmer ('Evil Aliens') is new British zombie flick 'Stalled'. The project will be hitting the Us courtesy of Uncork'd Entertainment and Odin's Eye this coming October where it'll be receiving a limited theatrical run. Soon to pop in at the European Film Market, Christian James' Stalled is proof that sometimes all you need to sell a movie is a good concept. And a man fighting off zombies while trapped in a women's toilet stall is just pretty damn funny. It's Christmas Eve, and a soon-to-be-shit-canned maintenance gopher (Dan Palmer) is changing light bulbs and cleaning toilets instead of drinking egg nog and making out with drunk receptionists at the annual office party. Unfortunately for this forlorn floor-sweeper, he chooses to use the ladies restroom the very second a zombie outbreak occurs! Will he bowl us over and flush away the undead or (like in his pre-apocalypse life) simply remain ...Stalled? Watch the trailer below....

One man. One toilet. And lots of zombies! Lol! Get ready for a completely weird horror movie titled Stalled, which comes from director Christian James and is currently in post production. Yeah, no official release date at this moment, but at least we have a completely fresh (well, if fresh is the right word for a story set in one toilet) teaser trailer for the whole thing. Make sure you check this out, and let us know what you think!
So, Christian James directed the movie from Dan Palmer‘s script which centers on a luckless maintenance gopher who finds himself stuck in a ladies restroom during the zombie apocalypse.
Dan Palmer also stars as the lead, character named W.C (yeah, that’s funny name, too) while the rest of the cast also includes Antonia Bernath, Tamaryn Payne, Mark Holden, Giles Alderson and Chris R. Wright.

Currently in post-productions, Stalled is the latest entry into the UK horror comedy genre that British filmmakers often seem to have a handle on better than most. (Naturally, I point you towards Shaun of the Dead as a good starting point if you’re new to the genre.)
We’ve had the first poster for the film sent over, giving us a tease of its intriguing premise:

Back in 2004 a new British comedy horror flick arrived out of nowhere and landed our desks. The parody-esque slasher feature was called 'Freak Out' and was a great little low-budget production which kept our team chuckling away. Now 8 years on Brit duo Christian James and Dan Palmer are back with their new comedy horror effort 'Stalled'. It's Christmas time zombies, with guaranteed toilet humour all the way and we have caught an early glimpse at the new bloody one-sheet from the project. James helms from a script penned by Dan Palmer who also stars as the suitably named maintenance man W.C. Antonia Bernath ('Lykke'), Tamaryn Payne ('Hollyoaks'), Mark Holden, Giles Alderson, Victoria Broom, Mark Kelly and Victoria Eldon all co-star. Check out the plot into and fresh new one-sheet below....
