Considered by many to be the magnum opus of author Cormac McCarthy – whose works include No Country for Old Men, The Road, All the Pretty Horses, and Child of God, among others – the violent Western Blood Meridian (you can pick up a copy Here) was published in 1985… and in the years since, several filmmakers have made unsuccessful attempts to bring the story to the screen. Adaptations have passed through the hands of Tommy Lee Jones, Ridley Scott, and James Franco, with Franco getting the furthest with it, shooting 25 minutes of test footage before the producer shut down the project. With unrelenting violence and a dark tone, Blood Meridian has been said to be unfilmable. But director John Hillcoat, who previously helmed the feature based on The Road (pictured below), is pushing an adaptation forward at New Regency, and Deadline reports that John Logan, who received Oscar nominations for his work on the scripts for Hugo,...

Acclaimed writer John Logan will adapt Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” novel into a feature film for director John Hillcoat.
Hillcoat is also producing along with Keith Redmon for New Regency. Cormac McCarthy’s son, John Francis McCarthy, will serve as executive producer, while Cormac, who died in June 2023, will receive a posthumous executive producer credit.
“It’s incredibly exciting to have John Logan on board,” John Francis said. “Very reassuring in the seemingly long list of good news concerning what was originally such an intimidating undertaking.”
The project was originally set up with director James Franco and star Russell Crowe in 2016, but fell apart over rights to the book.
Based on historical conflicts along the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, “Blood Meridian” follows the journey of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old from Tennessee, as he navigates the brutal and harrowing landscape of this new era.

Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” has been one of the trickiest classic novels to adapt for the screen, but it now has a three-time Oscar nominee who may finally crack it.
John Logan, the writer of “Gladiator,” “The Aviator,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Skyfall,” and the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” has been tapped to adapt “Blood Meridian” into a feature film.
Last year, New Regency announced it was developing a feature film based on the 1985 Western novel, and the studio attached John Hillcoat — who previously directed McCarthy’s “The Road” — to direct the film. Hillcoat is also directing and producing “Blood Meridian” alongside Keith Redmon for New Regency.
Cormac McCarthy is getting a posthumous executive producer credit on the film, and his son John Francis McCarthy is also serving as an EP.

Three time Oscar-nominated scribe John Logan is adapting National Book Award-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West for the big screen for New Regency.
John Hillcoat, who previously adapted McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road, will direct and produce along with Keith Redmon for New Regency.
The sprawling novel is widely considered one of the greatest works of American literature. Published in 1985, Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West is an epic tale of the violence and depravity that attended America’s westward expansion which brilliantly subverts the conventions of the Western novel and the mythology of the Wild West. Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, it traces the fortunes of a 14-year-old Tennesseean who stumbles into a nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving.

The documentary, which took over two years to make, is said to be in the same vein as the works of Graham Greene and John Le Carré. The documentary will lay out Haitian politics, its relationship to the U.S. and the corruption and criminality the country deals with, including drugs and weapons trafficking.
“I am eager to tell my country’s real story beyond the usual exotic clichés and preposterous clickbait,” Peck said in a prepared statement. “I want to reveal for once, without holding back, the core stories and real reasons for Haiti’s tragic situation.

Austin Butler is going from blades to bikes as he goes from Dune: Part Two to the upcoming period drama, The Bikeriders. Butler revealed that his immediate start on The Bikeriders meant that he couldn’t shave his hair for Dune 2 as time was not allotted to have his hair grow back, so he’s actually wearing a prosthetic bald cap. He got to keep his blonde locks and Focus Features has now released the new trailer for The Bikeriders, which Butler stars in with Tom Hardy.
If you recall, The Bikeriders was originally set for a fall 2023 release via Disney’s Searchlight. The studio ended up selling the film (in an unusual move) to Focus, who decided to set it up as summer counter programming. This might have been a smart move as Butler is sure to come off Dune: Part Two an even bigger star than he was a few months ago.

The second trailer also reveals how tight the relationship is between Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two) and Tom Hardy’s characters and the extent they’ll go to to protect the club.
In addition to Tom Hardy and Austin Butler, the cast includes Michael Shannon (Bullet Train), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). Jeff Nichols wrote and directed the drama which was originally scheduled for a 2023 release. Focus Features is now planning a June 21, 2024 theatrical release.

Austin Butler and Jodie Comer are ready to drive off into the sunset together — that is, unless Butler’s biker gang boss, played by Tom Hardy, gets in the way first.
The core trio behind Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” drive the motorcycle-centric drama set in the 1960s. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, “The Bikeriders” centers on the subculture of the era’s motorcycle riders. Comer plays Kathy, a strong-willed member of the Vandals gang who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Butler). Kathy recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders led by Johnny (Hardy) and later turning into a dangerous crime-driven gang.
Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus also star.

Exclusive: Mr. & Mrs. Smith is off to a promising start at Amazon.
The eight-episode series debuted on February 2 to become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries. It is now one of the Top 5 new series debuts ever for Amazon in terms of total viewers in the U.S.
Amazon, as is typical, remains tight-lipped about the exact viewership data. Next month, there will likely be more numbers available via Nielsen’s streaming charts.
It is also noteworthy that Amazon is specifically touting U.S. viewership, since that is the audience that Nielsen measures. In the past, the streamer has often opted to promote global viewership, which is much harder to quantify without proprietary data from the company itself.
Because of this, it’s expected that the series will make an appearance on those charts, especially because all eight episodes were released at once, which gives it...

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” ending a short period of producer New Regency shopping the finished film to studios. The crime period piece, which premiered at Telluride this fall, was initially set up for an awards-friendly Dec. 1 release by 20th Century Studios, but it was removed from Disney’s calendar last month.
Sources informed Variety that it was New Regency’s decision — not Disney’s — to seek a new distributor. The production company also opted to remove “The Bikeriders” from the Disney calendar due to its actors’ inability to promote the feature, which carries a $40 million production budget, during the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The Bikeriders has found a new home.
Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to the New Regency movie, which was previously set up at Disney’s 20th Century.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, the movie about a motorcycle club in the 1950s stars Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. It had been been scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 1 after making several stops on the fall festival circuit, including opening the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend.
However, Disney and New Regency subsequently announced that The Bikeriders was being taken off the release calendar. Behind the scenes, insiders say New Regency had been given the go-ahead to take the film elsewhere.
Plans are for Focus to release the film theatrically in 2024. Focus will handle the pic domestically, while Universal Pictures International will have overseas duties.

The movie was previously dated on Dec. 1 via 20th Century Studios/Disney. However, New Regency made the choice to pull the movie back, I hear, due to the ongoing actors strike and the cast unable to promote. The Bikeriders is currently 85% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics.

Writer/director Zach Cregger’s horror film Barbarian (watch it Here) was a financial success when it was released last year, and it also received a lot of positive word-of-mouth. New Line Cinema was so impressed by it, they forked over $38 million to pick up Cregger’s mysterious new horror project, Weapons. (Beating out Jordan Peele and Universal in the bidding war.) New Line then signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, the production company behind Barbarian. They have since set up two other projects, a sci-fi thriller called Companion and a haunted house movie called Occupant, that Cregger will be producing. But while the filmmakers move on to other ideas, Barbarian does still has life in it. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that a Barbarian video game is now in the works!

“Barbarian,” Zach Cregger’s 2022 horror hit, is getting the video game treatment, with a single-player “all-new narrative experience” being developed for consoles and PC.
Diversion3 Entertainment, the studio behind horror video game adaptations for “Friday the 13th” and “Evil Dead,” is leading development on the “Barbarian” game, in association with New Regency Pictures. The game will be based on the “characters and creatures” of the movie.
Starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long, “Barbarian” follows a young woman who books a rental home in a bad part of town, only to find a man already staying there. Convinced that the nearby hotels are all booked up due to a local conference, and because it’s late at night, she decides to share the rental with the stranger, against her better judgment. Soon, she discovers there is a lot more to worry about than an unfamiliar housemate.

Zach Cregger‘s hit Barbarian is the latest horror movie to get a video game adaptation for PC and consoles, courtesy of New Regency Pictures and Diversion3 Entertainment. Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive scoop on the upcoming video game this afternoon.
Diversion3 Entertainment will lead the creative team adapting Barbarian in video game form. Having Diversion3 Entertainment on board is a big deal right off the bat, as the company previously worked on both Friday the 13th: The Game and Evil Dead: The Game.
“We’re very excited to work with the team at New Regency to expand on the settings, characters, and creatures of Barbarian,” said Tim Hesse, Executive Producer of Diversion3 Entertainment. “The film did a magnificent job of not only scaring audiences with its unexpected and horrifying twists and turns, but also in establishing strong characters thrown into terrifying situations.
“We look forward to exploring these themes further in the game.

Universal Pictures Content Group has acquired international rights to Elon Musk documentary “Musk,” directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney.
It was announced during Cannes earlier this year that HBO Documentary Films had come on board to join the production and will release the film in North America.
Gibney directed “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” the Oscar-nominated “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and Oscar winner “Taxi to the Dark Side.”
Helen Parker, exec VP, Universal Pictures Content Group, said: “We instantly wanted to attach to this feature as we are big fans of Alex’s previous work and feel confident that he will deliver an insightful portrayal of one of the centuries most provocative characters.”
The film is produced by Jigsaw Productions and jointly financed and produced by Closer Media, Anonymous Content via their recently launched sales and finance division AC Independent, and Double Agent.
