It was not on my list of expectations, when interviewing Los Angeles-based Chairman and COO of Warner Records Tom Corson, to be greeted by a quote from the German soccer coach, Jurgen Klopp. But these are, as those serotonin-sapping global headlines keep reminding us, unpredictable times.

Sales of vinyl records have enjoyed constant growth in recent years. At the same time, CD sales are in a nosedive. Last year, the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) mid-year report suggested that CD sales were declining three times as fast as vinyl sales were growing. In February, the RIAA reported that vinyl sales accounted for more than a third of the revenue coming from physical releases.

Netflix unveiled its first unscripted music show today. “Westside,” which premieres globally on Nov. 9, is a genre-defining eight-episode series that follows the lives, loves and assorted struggles of nine aspiring artists (including former “American Idol” finalist Pia Toscano) as they pursue ever-elusive success in the modern-day music industry. Eschewing the standard competition-style format, this innovative approach intersperses raw docu-series footage with slick music videos and 20 original songs that emphasize the show’s themes and character story arcs.
The production quality of the series’ cinema-verite approach, along with a gritty, unfiltered look at the reality of struggle for success in Hollywood, makes “Westside” the polar opposite of the sanitized fantasy-like “Cinderella” story approach of a show like “American Idol.”
“Westside” also features original music written by some of today’s top hitmakers, among them Diane Warren, Philip Lawrence, Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally, Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd, Pat Monahan, Johan Carlsson, Ross Golan,...

There was no shortage of heat on stage last night at the American Music Awards: From the burning car backdrop of Twenty One Pilots’ performance to the flames that leapt into the air behind Post Malone, the blazing candles encircling Carrie Underwood and the spinning fireworks blazing above Cardi B, not to mention performances by Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez that scorched the stage at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. But trust us — what you didn’t see on TV was similarly smoking.

Nearly a year on from his death, Tom Petty’s fans could use a heartwarmer. They’re getting one in the form of “An American Treasure,” a forthcoming 60-track boxed set of mostly previously unreleased studio and live material. A few dozen invited guests got a sneak preview this week of some of the Petty songs that have never been issued before in any form, as Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell and producer/engineer Ryan Ulyate held court and answered questions between playbacks at the Village recording studio in West L.A.
Ten of the 60 tracks were played at the listening party, two of which have now been released to the public — “Keep a Little Soul” and “You and Me (Clubhouse Version),” both of which have accompanying music videos directed by Petty’s daughter, Adria, who spoke briefly and emotionally at the start of the event. Sony Music has entered into a formal partnership with Tha Lights Global, the company co-founded by Dooney Battle, best known for managing Lil Pump, Variety has learned. The multi-million-dollar deal will align Tlg with Sony Music and allow the label to place or distribute its artists through any of Sony’s own properties, among them Columbia, Epic and RCA Records.
The deal was said to involve multiple bidders and a price tag that neared $10 million, though some sources place the final tally at nearly twice that figure. Sony eyed the venture as a way to fortify its efforts in the Urban realm, say insiders, viewing Hlg as a forward-thinking, hip-hop-centric, youth-oriented hub with a significant social media footprint thanks to a stable of influencer talent.
Whispers of an impending deal had been floated for some time as Tlg artist Dominic Fike was reported to be signing with Sony, which Variety has confirmed.

Peter Gray, a seven-year veteran of Warner Bros. Records who in 2016 was named the label’s executive VP and head of radio promotion, is exiting the company, Variety has confirmed. His departure, due to come in October, comes ahead of a contract expiration.
“I had an awesome run at Warner Bros and a great time working with Tom [Corson] at two labels,” Gray tells Variety. “It couldn’t be more gentlemanly and the right timing. Tom has a great company to run and an excellent promotion team. I’m going to take a breath before making my next move.”
The news comes six months after Tom Corson moved to the Warner Music Group label in Burbank from New York where he was COO of RCA. Gray too had come from RCA to Wbr in 2011 after rising to senior VP of promotion.

For a while, it looked like D'Angelo was going to become R&B's Axl Rose. The parallels are easy to spot: Both individuals are massively talented perfectionists whose personal struggles threatened to drown long-awaited follow-ups to early successes. In Rose's case, that would be Chinese Democracy, a Guns N' Roses album so delayed it became a running joke ("We'll have democracy in China before we have Chinese Democracy," for example), and for D'Angelo, it was the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo, which was eventually released in Dec. 2014 as Black Messiah. New York — Justin Timberlake's comeback album has sold nearly 1 million units its first week out.
Nielsen SoundScan announced Tuesday that the singer's third album, "The 20/20 Experience," has moved 968,000 units. It's the 19th album in Nielsen's 22-year history that has sold more than 900,000 albums in its debut week.
"20/20" is Timberlake's third album and the follow-up to his multiplatinum, Grammy-winning 2006 album, "FutureSex/LoveSounds." The new CD features the pop hit "Suit & Tie."
"The numbers are pleasantly surprising," said Tom Corson, the president and chief operating officer of RCA Records, which released Timberlake's album.
The label had projected that "20/20" would sell 500,000 to 600,000 units, Corson said.
Timberlake, 31, was strategic about promoting his comeback effort: He performed at the Grammy Awards, hosted and hit the stage at "Saturday Night Live" and spent an entire week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." The singer also partnered with Target for the album's deluxe edition and "20/20" streamed...

What's in a name? Ask the common consumer which artists are -- or, rather, were -- on Arista, Jive or J records recently and you might get just a couple answers, if any. Those names may not carry much weight or the weight that they used to with music fans. RCA Records CEO Peter Edge and COO Tom Corson agree, at least in part. Sony Music is retaining the artists under those three labels and putting them under the larger RCA umbrella. So now acts like Usher, Britney Spears, Pink, Foo Fighters, previous "American Idol" stars like Jennifer Hudson and more...

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - RCA Records is shutting down its Arista, Jive, and J Records labels. Arista, founded by Clive Davis in 1974, was the label of Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Barry Manilow. Jive, founded in 1977, signed pop acts Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. J Records, founded in 2000, was home to Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx. All Arista, Jive, and J Records artists will now fall under the RCA label. "The concept is that there is value in branding RCA and not having it confused or diluted by other labels," Tom Corson, who was promoted to president and COO of RCA Records in August, told The Hollywood Reporter. "The artists have all been supportive. We didn’t make this move without consulting our artists, and we haven’t had any push-back. Frankly, they’re the brand. We’re defined by our artists."...
