Mubi is showing Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Last Life in the Universe (2003) in the United States from August 13 - September 11, 2016.“Let’s not know too much about what we’re going to do, let’s just look for the film.” —Pen-ek RatanaruangThere are films that you sleep through and films that guide you through sleep. Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s 2003 film Last Life in the Universe falls under the latter category, invoking that lull between wake and slumber. That slow-motion moment when your eyes are still open as you’re dreaming, where the most nonsensical fantasies make perfect sense. It is also a film labeled as quintessentially “art-house” and “Thai New Wave,” known as the hit that propelled director Pen-ek Ratanaruang into the international spotlight once dominated by his friend and colleague, Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Yet with each viewing Last Life in the Universe ceases to be anything at all. Maybe that is the point,...

(Cbr) Paul Bettany's vision for The Vision is coming a little more into focus. The actor, who plays both the voice of Tony Stark's A.I. valet J.A.R.V.I.S and also the synthezoid superhero -- who may be one and the same -- hit San Diego Comic-Con International to join his "Avengers: Age of Ultron" co-stars on stage for the big Marvel Studios presentation -- but earlier in the day, he joined a select group of reporters for an intimate roundtable conversation about his still enigmatic new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even before the questioning started, Bettany made it clear how tricky his answers were going to be as he tried to stay spoiler-protective. He made a quick check out the adjacent hotel window to gauge his safety. "Let me just look up -- oh, okay. I can't say anything!" he joked, pretending to spot a sniper.

Edward James Olmos sang the praises of the Ray Bradbury documentary and its director, Michael O’Kelly
I kicked off Saturday at Sdcc 2013 almost indulgently, skipping the crazy lines in favor of a sit down breakfast with a group of lovely, intelligent ladies. Then I made my way over to the convention center to get in for the Ray Bradbury panel- as a fan of his, I was disappointed to miss the panel next year and wasn’t quite sure what I’d get from this one, besides knowing that Edward James Olmos and Joe Mantegna would be there. The room was crazy beforehand, filled to the gills with Magic the Gathering gamers, there to see the early art for a forthcoming expansion. This is one of the great things about ComicCon- being focused on a particular area of interest, it’s easy to forget how many completely different Con experiences are happening around you.

Three minions take a breather
On Friday, the convention kicked into full gear, with more people in attendance than the previous two days and the start of the big ticket programming in Hall H (The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones). Many of those following the TV programming at the Con opted for Ballroom 20, with Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. among the highlights. Once again, I opted for smaller rooms, starting with the Indigo Ballroom. Unfortunately, given the popularity of the programming that morning, including Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time (always a big hit at the Con) and the Adult Swim lineup, it took quite a while to get in to the room. On the plus side though, the line was a lot of fun, with a ridiculous number of creative, fun costumes (see the bottom of the post for more).

Irving Penn, whose photographs revealed a taste for stark simplicity whether he was shooting celebrity portraits, fashion, still life or remote places of the world, died Wednesday at his Manhattan home. He was 92.The death was announced by his photo assistant, Roger Krueger."He never stopped working," said Peter MacGill, a longtime friend whose Pace-MacGill Galleries in Manhattan represented Penn's work. "He would go back to similar subjects and never see them the same way twice."Penn, who constantly explored the photographic medium and its boundaries, typically preferred to isolate his subjects . from fashion models to Aborigine tribesmen . from their natural settings to photograph them in a studio against a stark background. He believed the studio could most closely capture their true natures.Between 1964 and 1971, he completed seven such projects, his subjects ranging from New Guinea mud men to San Francisco hippies.Penn also had a...
