Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

The small Chicago house where Walt Disney was born is to be turned into a museum, with a Kickstarter campaign to support renovations

Walt Disney's birthplace is like something from the start of one of his films: a wooden house in Chicago that was the first humble chapter in an extraordinarily successful life. Now, as the Walt Disney Company celebrates its 90th anniversary, plans are being launched to turn the house into a museum.
The project is being proposed by Dina Benadon and Brent Young, a married couple whose company Super 78 Studios designs theme park attractions for the likes of SeaWorld and Universal Studios. The restoration and preservation of the house in which Walt and his brother, Roy, were born, which was built by their father, Elias Disney, in 1893 and designed by their mother, Flora, will kick off Thursday. After the house is restored, it will serve as a historic site, museum and community resource designed to enhance and explore childhood creativity. "The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?

“The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories,” said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. “The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. A judge has refused to grant Mindy McCready's request for a court order to prevent her mother talking to the press. The star, who has a history of alcohol and drug abuse, was reportedly found unconscious at her mum's home in Fort Myers, Florida on Tuesday morning, May 25.
Her mother, Gayle Inge, called for help, suggesting the singer had attempted to commit suicide. The singer's spokesman, Brent Young, has since played down the incident, revealing McCready simply experienced a bad reaction to the pain pills she had been prescribed after breaking her toe on Sunday, May 23.
McCready filed legal papers earlier this week, alleging Inge claimed she had tried to commit suicide in a bid to ruin her chances of gaining custody of her son. McCready's attorney James Moon tells E! News, "The reason we were requesting a gag order against Gayle Inge is really obvious."

Country star Mindy McCready's recent drug-related hospitalisation has left her friend MacKenzie Phillips with some big questions - she can't understand why the singer's mother called emergency services with an overdose story.
The troubled country star has been released from hospital in Florida. She was admitted after her mother, Gayle Ingle, reportedly found her unconscious, called 911 and suggested that her daughter had overdosed after taking the pain pill Darvocet for a broken toe.

Young claims McCready told her mother she was feeling unwell, sparking a panic.
And now Phillips, McCready's roommate on reality TV show Celebrity Rehab, has suggested the call for help may have been a ploy to wreck her friend's chances of winning back custody of her four-year-old son, Zander.
Phillips tells In Touch magazine, "I find it suspicious that her mom gave her a strong medication for a broken toe and called 911 saying that she was overdosing.
"It also just seems a bit strange that this happened in the midst of a custody battle. Mindy was in Fort Myers to see her son, who is so important to her and whom she loves so much. I support her 100 per cent... and I know that she is going to be fine and prevail."
McCready's hospitalisation comes just days after she won a court judgement to reopen custody proceedings in the hope of being reunited with Zander.
She lost custody of the boy in 2007 after she was jailed for violating probation by allegedly assaulting her mum in a fight over the singer's drinking and drug addictions.
Meanwhile McCready's brother has called the drama a big misunderstanding.

Mindy McCready who was rushed to hospital on early Tuesday, May 25 has been back home, Associated Press reports. The country music singer was hospitalized following a 911 call made by her mother at 10:38 A.M. from North Fort Myers home for a possible drug overdose, Lee County Sheriff's Office confirms.
Speaking to Radar Online, Mindy's mother Gayle McCready Inge says her daughter took a near lethal dose of prescription pills in what was a failed suicide attempt. Inge says Mindy took an amphetamine drug which is used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder, Darvocet and another muscle relaxer.
"I asked Mindy how many pills did you take. She said maybe 25," Inge recalls. "I said that's it, and that's when I called 911." She then adds, "Mindy told the 911 people that she absolutely didn't care if she lost her life. My daughter is very, very sick."

Mindy McCready remains in a Florida hospital tonight, "resting comfortably " and awaiting word from doctors about her condition, according to her rep. "We're still waiting for a diagnosis from the doctor," the singer's publicist, Kat Atwood, tells E! News. "I've spoken with her mother and I've spoken with her attorney, and no one has indicated an overdose." He says she has a broken toe and he believes that she had been taking some kind of medication for the injury....

Troubled country star Mindy McCready has been hospitalized, although the exact reason for her hospitalization is still murky. McCready has long struggled with drug addictions, leading many to immediately suspect that McCready had overdosed.
