Exclusive: The Telluride Film Festival, held in an old mining town high up in a picturesque alpine valley in the Rockies, marks its 50th anniversary this week, and Oscar-winning Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins undoubtedly is one of its favorite sons.
He’ll be making the trek to the mountains as he did for the first time in 2002 as a student from Florida State film school. The festival has a student symposium where novice filmmakers can meet and engage with professionals over the Labor Day weekend.
“There is no red carpet, there are no frills,” the director told me. “If you see a filmmaker in line for a cup of coffee, speak to them. They actually want to be engaged. That’s why filmmakers come over and over again, year after year.”

After the actor’s retirement was announced, his representative at the time, Leslee Dart, stated, “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

By any estimation, the Woody Allen business looks like it’s in terrible shape. The 85-year-old filmmaker was further ostracized by the industry when “Allen v. Farrow,” the four-part HBO series from directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, resurrected sexual assault allegations leveled against him by his daughter Dylan Farrow. Now, as the finale of “Allen v. Farrow” reverberates, some may assume that Allen has no path forward to keep making movies.
He does, of course. Pushback won’t faze him — he’s got a decade of it under his belt — nor will box-office ignominy, as his career has more of that than success. What about an entertainment industry that’s actively hostile toward financing the small, specific, not-inexpensive dramas that he makes? That’s irrelevant: While he’s intractable about the movies he makes, Allen appears to be infinitely flexible when it comes to financing and — perhaps more than...

Woody Allen and his wife Soon-Yi Previn have issued a statement to the press through a spokesperson — Allen’s sister, producer Letty Aronson — in response to the HBO docuseries “Allen v. Farrow” that premiered Sunday. The program details his daughter Dylan Farrow’s allegations of abuse against the director, and includes in-depth interviews with her, Allen’s former partner Mia Farrow, and those who say they witnessed his behavior.
Allen and Previn claim the filmmakers — Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering — had “no interest in the truth” and were “surreptitiously collaborating” with the Farrows to do a “hatchet job riddled with falsehoods.”
In the four-part docuseries, which contains interviews with the Farrows as well as close family friends and experts, Dylan Farrow says that “for the longest time I’ve been trying to set the record straight… No matter what you think you know, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

42West parent company Dolphin Entertainment has expanded its marketing/PR footprint with the acquisition of The Door, a leading lifestyle and hospitality public relations, creative branding and marketing services agency hatched a decade ago by co-founders Lois Najarian O’Neill and Charlie Dougiello.
The two companies will operate separately, but Dolphin Entertainment CEO William O’Dowd said there is symmetry and opportunity between the new acquisition and the entertainment PR firm run by Leslee Dart, Amanda Lundberg and Allan Mayer. He pointed to a recent Observer article that ranked the pair as the third and fourth most powerful PR firms in the U.S. as reason to believe Dolphin has expanded in a compatible way.
The Door’s client list ranges from celebrity chefs like Rachael Ray to hotel groups like Viceroy Hotels and Resorts to restaurant chains such as Starr Restaurants to consumer brands such as Fao Schwarz. Najarian O’Neill,...

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

"Phantom Thread" is the new, award-winning dramatic feature written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson ("There Will Be Blood"), opening December 25, 2017, starring 3-time Oscar winner Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, who said this will be his last film as an actor:
"...amid the glamour of London in the 1950's, renowned dressmaker 'Reynolds Woodcock' and his sister 'Cyril' dress members of the royal family, film stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames...

"Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across 'Alma', a strong-willed woman who soon becomes a fixture in his life as a muse and lover.

The Oscar race isn’t over until the last movie screens, and this year one of the final contenders to be unveiled will be “Phantom Thread.” The drama marks the hugely anticipated reunion between Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis, who last worked together a decade ago on “There Will Be Blood.” The Upton Sinclair-inspired drama earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and gave Day-Lewis his second trophy for Best Actor (he’d make history and win a third for “Lincoln” five years later), so anyone would be foolish to underestimate just how big “Phantom Thread” will be this awards season.
Focus Features has been keeping a majority of the details surrounding the movie under lock and key, although the official trailer was finally released on October 23, teasing a gorgeously shot drama about the romantic obsessions of a self-destructive artist. “Phantom Thread” seems to operating...

2017-10-11T07:20:13-07:00Is Megyn Kelly Going to Kill NBC's 'Today'?
NBC gambled when it offered a cushy morning-show gig to Fox News host Megyn Kelly. Would Kelly's conservative audience follow her to a mainstream network? Would Kelly be able to manage the transition from fierce partisan politics to fluffy lifestyle and celebrity journalism? So far, it looks like the answer to both those questions is "no." Ratings for Megyn Kelly Today have been disturbingly low compared to the network's previous morning ratings, and, worse, Kelly's show seems to be having a negative impact on NBC's other morning programming.
Via Page Six.
The numbers are in, and “Megyn Kelly Today” is dragging down the “Today” show franchise, an insider explained to Page Six.
“Not only are ratings plummeting since Megyn Kelly joined the ‘Today’ franchise, but the numbers show Kelly’s lead-in has also affected Kathie Lee...

Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most talented actors of his generation. He's been one of my favorites and I've loved everything he's done over the course of his career. Now, that glorious career of his has come to an end.

Finally lending a bit of gravity and anticipation to his first collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson since 2007’s There Will Be Blood, a.k.a. many people’s choice for this century’s greatest film, Daniel Day-Lewis has announced a retirement from acting.
