The first series in the franchise to have an African-American and a woman as its marquee player, NatGeo’s Genius: Aretha is, like the title of its opening episode and the Queen of Soul herself, all about “Respect.”
Penned by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks, the pandemic-delayed premiere picks up with the Cynthia Erivo-portrayed Aretha Franklin performing a rousing rendition of “Chain of Fools” at triumphant 1967 show in Chicago before shifting the action to 1954 and the dangerous routes of rural Alabama. With threats and violence in the Jim Crow mists, we meet the pre-superstar Little Re (Shaian Jordan) and her preacher father Cl Franklin (Courtney B. Vance) with a flat tire and two racists breathing down their sweaty necks.

Everyone wants concerts to come back. Everyone who attended the premiere event for Nat Geo’s “Genius: Aretha” at the makeshift drive-in in the Rose Bowl parking lot Thursday had a more specific wish: that Cynthia Erivo concerts would come back. Never mind that that really hasn’t much of a thing up till now, with Erivo being too busy with acting gigs to tour. The premiere screening was followed by a taped performance by Erivo, filmed last weekend nearby in an empty Greek Theatre, that made it clear the road and audiences along it will be ready whenever she is.
The end of Erivo’s 20-minute performance met with considerable honking from a car-bound crowd that couldn’t help but momentarily forego the Rose Bowl setting’s rules about laying off the horn. The mini-concert, first revealed in a “Just for Variety” preview, had Erivo arriving on the Greek...

The caption accompanying the photos notes that Genius: Aretha will debut in 2021.

Netflix unveiled a brand image spot during Sunday’s Bet Awards telecast that highlights black artists who work for the streaming giant.
The spot dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood” was inspired by the famed 1958 photograph “A Great Day in Harlem” featuring 57 jazz legends — including Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Count Basie — on the stairs of New York brownstone snapped by photographer Art Kane.
The Netflix spot from director Lacey Duke features 47 black writers, showrunners, actors, and producers. The plan for the spot and the image campaign stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative designed to foster an “ongoing, intentional focus to talk authentically with the black audience.” A photo similar to “Great Day in Harlem” was taken earlier this month by photographer Kwaku Alston to commemorate the gathering.
The debut comes just two days after Netflix was rocked by the abrupt departure of corporate communications chief Jonathan Friedland...

Social media reigns supreme! Or at least it does when it comes to the 2015 Grammy nomination announcements. All day long, a constant stream of contenders have been posted to the official Grammy Twitter account. More so than ever this year, the social media savvy singers and bands separated from the pack. While some iconic stars remained strangely mum — not a peep as of this writing from Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, or Beyonce on either Twitter or Instagram — others dove right in. Anyone can write a sincere “Thank you!!!1!” but a few went above and beyond. Whether hashtagging their hearts out, using emojis, or just a fun turn of phrase, these nominees showed off their personalities…which means they’ve already won the award for Social Media Navigation. Shout It Out: Mahoney’s Debut an Uneasy Mix of Style Over Substance
It’s not quite accurate to call Victoria Mahoney’s directorial and screenwriting debut, Yelling to the Sky, a failed effort, but its attempts to relate the rough and tumble adolescence of a young girl’s life in a mixed race Queens household feel overly familiar and not quite fully realized. However, Mahoney’s nascent talents as a director are frequently on display here, though her stylish flourishes would have perhaps been more at home on something that wasn’t a semi-autobiographical treatment of a subject, that, because of its casting and narrative similarities, will be unfavorably compared to 2009’s more compelling and divisive Precious.
Set in an almost indistinguishable time period in Queens, Sweetness O’Hara (Zoe Kravitz) and her older sister, Ola (Antonique Smith) depend on each other, combating other violently inclined teenagers from surrounding neighborhoods,...

The Good Life single looks back to the early days of hip-hop while staying firmly planted in the present.
By Rob Markman
Nas
Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images
There's no R&B chord, A-list feature or catchy chorus. On "Nasty," the first single from Nas' 10th solo album, The Good Life, the rapper takes things back to hip-hop basics: hard rhymes over an infectious loop.
The song, which leaked online Monday night, is reminiscent of New York's 1980s infamous park jams and starts out with a DJ asking the rapper's native Queensbridge housing projects, "Are y'all ready to see Nasty Nas?" The question is, of course, rhetorical.
After Nasir pushed rap's envelope in 2008 on his politically charged Untitled album (originally titled N---er), fans have clamored for new solo material. Thankfully, "Nasty" lives up to its name, as the track's opening bars paint a picture of New York's pre-gentrified crack era:...

Jason Bourne Jr. is in action with these photos from the teen thriller, Abduction, starring Taylor Lautner. The film revolves around a young high school boy who, after perusing a missing persons site, finds a picture of kid that if aged looks just like him, giving him cause to question his parents and ultimately who he is, leading on a path of government conspiracy, and tons of Jason Bourne style action. Abduction comes to theaters September 23rd, 2011 and stars Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist, Sigourney Weaver, Antonique Smith. The film is directed by John Singleton.
Taylor Lautner stars as a young man unwittingly thrust into a deadly world of covert espionage in Lionsgate’s action-thriller, Abduction, directed by John Singleton.
For as long as he can remember, Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) has had the uneasy feeling that he’s living someone else’s life.

John Singleton’s latest movie “Abduction”, an action thriller about a teenager who fights shady people with guns, stars Taylor Lautner. And in case you missed that very important point, the first poster for “Abduction” is here to remind you. Consider yourself reminded. What would you do if you found your own picture on a missing persons website? Teen Nathan Harper (Lautner) finds himself facing this very dilemma. Setting out to uncover his real identity, Nathan quickly learns his parents are far from who they say they are. When the police, government agents and shadowy figures start to pursue him, Nathan’s quest for the truth erupts into a full-blown “Bourne”-like man-on-the-run thriller. Lautner stars with Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist, Sigourney Weaver, Antonique Smith, Denzel Whitaker, Nickola Shreli, Allen Williamson, and William Peltz. Running September 23, 2011. Get more images and videos in our “Abduction” preview page.

The Abduction Movie Trailer has premiered. John Singleton‘s Abduction (2011) stars Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and Jason Isaacs. Abduction‘s plot synopsis: “A thriller centered on a young man named Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.” They sure did give away many of the plot points in the first movie trailer for Abduction. They showed key people dying in this first trailer for Abduction but they certainly didn’t go down without a fight. I really hope they explain how all of those “skills” suddenly turn on in Nathan. Seems a little strange. In the Bourne Identity its explained. Let’s hope they do the same in Abduction and that Nathan doesn’t have amnesia. That would be lame if this film turns out to be Jason Bourne in high school.

Director: Victoria Mahoney Writer: Victoria Mahoney Starring: Zoë Kravitz, Antonique Smith, Jason Clarke, Yolanda Ross Yelling to the Sky is the story of Sweetness (Zoë Kravitz), the adolescent daughter of a Caucasian father, Gordon (Jason Clarke), and Black mother, Lorene (Yolanda Ross). We first meet Sweetness as she is surrounded by a gang of neighborhood bullies led by the intimidatingly rotund Latonya (Gabourey Sidibe); Sweetness' older sister, Ola (Antonique Smith), comes to her rescue and the siblings scurry home. (Presumably the encounter is related to Sweetness' mixed-race parentage.) Things at home are certainly no less dire. Sweetness and Ola's father is a violent alcoholic who disappears for extended periods of time; their mother is a total zombie, incapacitated by depression and God knows what other afflictions. We sense an inner rage boiling within Sweetness, and it is not long before she starts peddling drugs in the stairwell of her high...

MTV‘s got a new look at “Twilight” guy Taylor Lautner’s upcoming chase thriller “Abduction”, which co-stars the suddenly redhot Lily Collins, who is currently up for every role in Hollywood that requires a pretty female lead. The former music network will also be premiering the first ever trailer or “Abduction” next week. John Singleton directs the film, which finds Lautner running away from shady Government types determined to stop him from uncovering the truth about his past. It’s like a Bourne movie, if Bourne was really obsessed with showing off his abs. Also starring Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist, Sigourney Weaver, Antonique Smith, Denzel Whitaker, Nickola Shreli, Allen Williamson, William Peltz, and running into theaters September 23, 2011.

I'm a longtime fan of films that deal frankly with society's worst problems. Poverty, domestic violence, crime, racism and other harsh realities of the human condition can be the stuff of stunningly powerful cinema.
Unfortunately, the gritty and earnest Yelling to the Sky isn't quite the powerful social statement it aspires to be. While it presents many convincing images of an impoverished and completely dysfunctional family, it suffers from clichéd story elements, uneven pacing and underdeveloped characters.
The film, which screened at the Arbor on the first Saturday of SXSW, is the story of Sweetness O'Hara (Zoë Kravitz), a Queens teenager doing her best to survive in her beaten-down world. Her father, Gordon (Jason Clarke) is a violent, manic depressive alcoholic who's often Awol from the household. His wife, Lorene (Yolanda Ross) suffers from depression and other vague ailments that leave her barely able to function. Sweetness's older sister, Ola...

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

All aboard for the poverty safari; roll up for the misery roadshow. Another middle class film for middle class people has been made depicting just how unremittingly awful life is down on Shitstreet USA – and you’re all invited to flagellate yourselves out of liberal guilt.
In competition feature Yelling to the Sky is the latest in a long line of films which murmur a condescending “oh dear” in the direction of (predominantly African American) poverty. Try to imagine a film where a poor black family has a father who indulges in bouts of drink-fuelled domestic violence, where people are shot dead in gangland shootings and where everyone has to take or sell drugs in order to get by. Can you imagine that film, complete with bleached out cinematography? Of course you can: you’ve seen it before.

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

The South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) just announced their entire 2011 feature film lineup, and there’s isn’t a lot of note, with regards to this blog’s focus.
Titles you should be aware of – all of which we’ve previously profiled on Shadow And Act – include, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky (which will actually make its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival later this month); plus Blacktino, the first feature film from writer/director Aaron Burns, a self-described “blacktino nerd from Austin, Texas,” who got his start at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios doing visual effects; Benda Bilili, a documentary about a band of homeless, disabled Congolese; and last, but not least, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, a documentary about the black man that happens to be the man behind the puppet (which also played at Sundance).

The La Times put together a slideshow of a whole bunch of 2011 films, posted yesterday on the paper’s website – a lot of star-driven, highly-anticipated blockbusters, and some “smaller” (relatively speaking) films.
Of relevance to this blog are stills from The Help, co-starring Viola Davis, Cicely Tyson, Emma Stone, Aunjanue Ellis, and several others (out in August), Tower Heist, co-starring Eddie Murphy, Gabourey Sidibe, Ben Stiller and more (out in November), and finally, Abduction, John Singleton’s long-awaited next film (Four Brothers, released in 2005, was his last), starring Taylor Lautner, while Antonique Smith has a supporting role (out in July).

Her debut feature, Yelling To The Sky, which we’ve given a lot of ink to on this site, hasn’t even made its debut yet, but writer/director Victoria Mahoney is already casting for her second feature, aiming to begin principal photography this summer!
The project is titled Chalk, and, all we have for a synopsis right now is the following: “Long kept secrets are unraveled, on one person’s exhaustive hunt for murder suspects.“
Yelling To The Sky, which stars Zoe Kravitz, Gabourey Sidibe, Tim Blake Nelson, Antonique Smith, Shareeka Epps, and many others, makes its world wide premiere at next month’s Berlin International Film Festival. All we’ve been privy to thus far are still images from the film; I’m hoping we’ll see a trailer soon, or even a few clips, if only to whet our appetites!

About a week after the Sundance Film Festival announced its complete lineup, the Berlin title with (the Berlin International Film Festival) just publicized the first batch of films that will be in competition at the festival, and, a film that I fully expected would debut at Sundance (but obviously will not) is one of Shadow And Act’s Filmmakers To Watch, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky – a film we’ve given mucho pixels to on this blog, which stars Zoë Kravitz, Gabourey Sidibe, Tim Blake Nelson, Antonique Smith, and many others.
So, congrats to Victoria and company! I’d even further say that a Berlin debut could be considered more prestigious than a Sundance birth. The competition is stiffer, and your film may get more international exposure. Victoria can count veteran Wim Wenders and Miranda July as some of her competition.
