Among the ten competition films selected for TIFF’s prestige Platform programme, Héléna Klotz makes her long-awaited return to features with Spirit of Ecstasy (aka La Vénus d’argent). Starring Claire Pommet (the singer goes by the name of Pomme) in her debut, we also find Niels Schneider, Sofiane Zermani, Anna Mouglalis, Grégoire Colin and Denis Ménochet among the cast. Les Films du bélier’s Justin Taurand produced the film. We have your first looks with a couple of exclusive clips. The film is set to have its world premiere on September 11th.
In the first clip we have the pairing of Pommet as Jeanne Francoeur and Schneider (who was featured in Klotz’s debut 2012 film) who clearly have a past (were they old flames) with Francoeur having undergone some fundamental personal changes – breaking away from forces that keep her close at bay.…...

Seemingly channeling the spirit of Claude Chabrol, Antoine Barraud’s Madeleine Collins is a decidedly classy throwback thriller about a seemingly humdrum character committing perverse acts of subterfuge against others. Barraud’s film follows Judith Fauvet (Virginie Efira), a translator living in France with her successful conductor husband, Melvil (Bruno Salomone), and two sons. But, it turns out, Judith is living a second life.
Under the guise of the near-constant travel required for her work, Judith has a second family in Switzerland, where boyfriend Abdel (Quim Gutierrez) primarily cares for their young daughter, Ninon (Loïse Benguerel). Barraud and co-screenwriter Klotz outline the delicate balancing act required on Judith’s part to keep her double life a secret, and the narrative displays a compelling psychological nuance due to the focus on the far-reaching effects of her deception.
By homing in on the feelings of the secondary characters, the filmmakers poignantly articulate...

The Toronto International Film Festival lineup keeps rolling in, with Midnight Madness, Discovery, and Platform programs being unveiled this week. Leading the pack is the North American premiere of Harmony Korine’s infrared action feature Aggro DR1FT, while new films from Tarsem, Larry Charles, Patricia Arquette, Molly Manning Walker, and more were also added.
“Sides will be split — both figuratively and literally (on screen) — as Midnight Madness returns to the Royal Alexandra Theatre with another stimulating concoction of unpredictable shock and ‘y’arr!’ cinema,” said Peter Kuplowsky, TIFF International Programmer, Midnight Madness. “Featuring two timely satiric provocations from Saudi Arabia (Naga) and Serbia (Working Class Goes to Hell) — nations that are making their section debut — this year’s madness infectiously ignites with 11 o’clock numbers that go all the way to midnight courtesy of Larry Charles’ bonkers and bawdy Dicks: The Musical. A menagerie of tastes will be sated, so bottoms up!

A woman walks through the evening dress section of an elegant department store. The camera follows her as if it were one of the discreet sales people. The pace is calm. Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany's may come to mind with her explanation about Tiffany’s as a place where nothing really bad can happen. Which of course is wishful thinking. The 18th Edition of this New York tradition, Rendez-Vous with French Cinema unveils perhaps their most diverse line-up in years. This range includes grand and engaging entertainments such as Régis Roinsard's Populaire (Opening Night film with its stars Romain Duris and Deborah François attending), uncompromising auteurs such as Jean-Claude Brisseau and Damien Odoul, rising independent voices including Héléna Klotz and Shalimar Preuss, and master filmmakers François Ozon, Patrice Leconte, Raymond Depardon, Nicolas Philibert and the late Claude Miller. Here are some of the titles I had a privilege to have a sneak peek at: RENOIRSilly me, I never made the connection between Renoir the painter and Jean Renoir the filmmaker all these years. Anyway, Renoir recounts the last days of Pierre-Auguste Renoir's life in...

Two young men lose themselves in the cold Parisian night only to find themselves again in nature in “Atomic Age,” from tyro scribe-helmer Helena Klotz. This impressionistic poeme nocturne anatomizes different if related tonalities of youthful ennui and friendship, and the narrative’s m.o. also translates via the impressive nighttime cinematography and immersive soundscape. Multiplex-goers will find the story anorexically thin, but experimentally inclined auds will understand why “Age” won France’s prestigious Prix Jean Vigo. Tla picked up U.S. rights.
Victor (Eliott Paquet) and his Polish poet pal, Rainer (Dominik Wojcik), take a train into the French capital for a night out. But Rainer isn’t interested in girls, and most girls don’t seem interested in Victor. The night drags on between dancing and conversations both inside and outside, where an inhospitable fog has descended. Shooting digitally, lenser Helene Louvart (“Pina”) uses color and shadows to...

Even with the problems of the digital age –during Morelia I’ve watched digitized films freeze, or computerized subtitles fail to launch – I must say that the few times I’ve seen actual film copies projected here at Morelia, I’ve been shocked by the worn copies, full of scratches and dirt, and indifferent attempts at focusing by projectionists. The first screening is of three films that won the Prix Jean Vigo, an award for unique and characteristic style, this year: first the short “La Vie Parisienne” by Vincent Diestchy, then the 67-minute “L’age atomique” by Héléna Klotz, and finally Louis Garrel’s “La règle de toi,” in which he also acted. Only Klotz is in attendance, dressed like Britney Spears in the kind of short shorts where you can see the pockets peeking out beneath the cutoff legs, over black tights. Before the films are screened, she tells us that the actors in.

Following up the initial announcement of titles, the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival revealed it will open with the period drama Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) today. From director Benoît Jacquot, the drama stars Inglourious Basterds lead Diane Kruger, as well as Léa Seydoux who broke-out in Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol this year. Based on, Chantal Thomas’ novel we have the first stills of the film (from Lumiere via The Playlist) that follows the “first few days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles.”
Kruger, who plays Marie Antoinette here, has only appeared in one big film following her post-Basterds role with Unknown, but I look forward to her future work, especially with this film. I thought Seydoux was great as an action villain in Ghotocol and excited to see her career rise. Check out the stills below,...
