Independence Day managed to revive both the alien invasion movie and the disaster flick in 1996, and just about every other mainstream picture released that year lived in its saucer-shaped shadow.
Yet beyond the aerial battles of Independence Day, the flying cows in Twister, and the high-wire antics of Tom Cruise in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible, there sat an entire library of lesser-known and underappreciated movies.
As part of our attempts to highlight the unsung greats of the 90s, here's our selection of 25 such films from 1996 - the year chess champion Garry Kasparov lost to the might of the computer Deep Blue, and the year comedy star Jim Carrey starred in an unexpectedly dark tale of obsession...

The Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed claims that three Americans and a British woman are responsible for the horrific terrorist attacks on Sept. 21, in which 68 people were murdered at a popular shopping mall in Kenya. There reportedly still a standoff at the mall and the terrorists claim that they are still holding hostages.
The scary, senseless and bloody attack at Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, left millions all over the world shocked. Now, Kenya’s foreign minister is claiming that three Americans from Minnesota, who are between the ages of 18 and 19 years old, of Somali or Arab origin, were among those allegedly responsible for the horrific attack. The terrorist group, Al Shabab, is reportedly the one that is the umbrella organization that carried it out.

Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Prakash Raj, Prachi Desai
Directed by K Ravi Kumar
Look. Indian cinema is like a massive bouquet of wildflowers of different colours and smells. You really can’t judge Policegiri, Sanjay Dutt’s hefty homage to hero-giri completed before his 3-year prison terms, against the soft gently-undulating movements of the week’s other release Lootera. If Vikramaditya Motwane’s film is soft-petalled rose Policegiri is a wild cactus flower from the desert.
Why cactus? The landscape is populated with pricks, you see.
It’s roaring 12-gun salute to the traditional mainstream cinema’s ongoing obsession with the corruption-cleansing cop who goes on a rampage. The anti-establishment figure from Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer has been slyly transformed into the Khaki-coloured law-enforcer with shades of grey .

As Blondie says, “Dreaming is free.”
Which is lucky for me, because I have a rather frantic week, and not a lot of original ideas for a column. Sure, I could write about the John Stewart scandal (or non-scandal, depending on which rumor you believe,), but I am late to that party. I could write about some obscure book that deserves more attention, but I am behind in my reading.
My sub-conscious came through for me.
Last night, I had one of my recurring dreams in which I still work for DC. Sometimes in these dreams I no longer work for DC, but sneak into an office and pretend I do. And sometimes, I even wear clothes. I can’t remember which of these scenarios was at play this time, but I remember getting a memo from Jenette Kahn about some new publishing initiative.

Who: Elizabeth Falkner: San Francisco celebrity chef, Citizen Cake and Orson founder and "The Next Iron Chef" runner-up.
Years in Sf: 25 years
Current Gig: Falkner became "The Next Iron Chef" runner-up on Sunday night, focusing the spotlight squarely on San Francisco. But with the sudden closure of both of her restaurants -- Citizen Cake and Orson -- the local dining scene is wondering what's next for our culinary star.
Elizabeth, on Sunday, you competed in the finale of "The Next Iron Chef," with Geoffrey Zakarian taking the prize. What's it like competing on a show like that? It's totally fun, but it's insane at the same time. It's a completely different environment than working in a restaurant. In the kitchen, if one of your chefs is going down in flames, you're not going to let them just burn up in the corner -- you're going to help them get it together.

Sharon Osbourne has been a very vocal supporter of young Jackie Evancho, after she and her fellow America’s Got Talent judges discovered the amazing youngster on last year’s season of the show.
The former X Factor judge described the young opera singer as ‘heavenly’ when she first heard her perform and this week, while promoting her new album, the 11 year old met with Sharon again during an interview on The Talk.
During their chat, in which Osbourne displayed real affection for the youngster, Evancho talked about some of the most impressive famous people she has met since being signed to Simon Cowell’s record label. She admitted:
I loved Oprah, and Mohammed Ali and the President….I loved meeting them.
And on her favourite place in the world, the little girl laughed:

Jackie Evancho has had quite a few adventures since rising to fame last year on 'America's Got Talent.' The 11-year-old singer released a best-selling Christmas album and more recently released her major label debut, 'Dream With Me.' Friday on 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS), 'Talent' judge Sharon Osbourne asked Evancho about the favorite people she's met and places she's been.
Evancho has been enjoying a slice of Hollywood life. Her favorite place? "I love being in Malibu," she said. "It's so cool there, and the water is just, it's nice and, and I love the beach. And I found a sand dollar there."
She also got to meet Oprah Winfrey, Mohammed Ali, and President Obama. Evancho sang at the White House and got to meet the Obama girls. "They're really nice," she said. Just your normal kid stuff.

It's not shocking that Osama bin Laden was found in a comfortable Pakistan mansion-what's shocking is that the U.S. pretends the country isn't a harbor for terrorists. Plus, full coverage of bin Laden's death.
To me, as an American Muslim, it's significant that bin Laden is dead. American-Muslim groups zipped out statements through the night after news of his death: Muslims for Progressive Values said it "expresses great relief" at the death, saying, "Osama Bin Laden has singularly disgraced Islam and dragged our faith through the mud..." Islamic Information Center called him "one of the greatest enemies of Islam, if not the entire world." American Islamic Forum for Democracy said it "applauds" the news.

Chicago – In Dan Reed’s unmissable 2009 HBO documentary “Terror in Mumbai,” cameras captured the overwhelming carnage caused by ten young Pakistani men. They were obeying every word of their elders, heard in the film via phone correspondence. The terrorists gradually began to resemble wide-eyed kids, as they became dazzled by the lavish scenery in Mumbai, an environment that clashed with their sheltered existence.
It’s precisely the raw humanity and learned ignorance of these terrorists that make them so frightening, yet British satirist Chris Morris has utilized their fundamental absurdity to fuel his poignant, provocative and fiercely funny black comedy, “Four Lions.” As co-producer of the acclaimed mock news show, “The Day Today,” Morris has no interest in relying on safe comic caricatures to get a laugh. His goal is to subvert stereotypes, not reinforce them.

Cricket. I must confess, until this week, I had more interest in the insect than the sport and, even then, I can’t remember the last time I thought fondly of a cricket… Jiminy Cricket of Walt Disney Pinocchio fame, maybe… So the prospect of sitting down to 83 minutes of men talking sport really wasn’t something I was looking forward to or expecting to enjoy, and I just couldn’t imagine a human interest angle that would stir me.
When I think of the sport I think of men in white playing the genteel sport in quaint little English towns or on village greens – an image easily conjured up given that I spent part of my childhood in a small English town in Essex on a street that led to a recreation ground where cricket was a regular summer activity. Not that I ever watched a game – as far as I was concerned,...

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant do good work in Cemetery Junction, Chris Morris is as brilliantly acerbic as ever in Four Lions – and John Cusack really should know better, writes Mark Kermode
Do comedies have to make you laugh? I ask because this week sees the release of two titles both of which will doubtless be shelved in the "comedy" section of your local DVD store, both of which I enjoyed and admired, yet neither of which had me rolling with laughter. Oh I chuckled, to be sure, as well as sniggered, grinned, and very occasionally guffawed. But the overwhelming tenor of both films was often one of melancholia and sadness – intentionally so, yet to very different ends.
Let's start with Cemetery Junction, a nostalgic coming-of-age tale from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant which the marketing folk struggled to sell to potential cinema audiences as a "hilarious" comedy. Now on DVD,...

Govinda Gallery director Chris Murray. Photo courtesy of the Govinda Gallery Archive. One day, while driving through Washington, D.C., Chris Murray passed a property with a “For Rent” sign in Georgetown. On a whim, with no business plan, Murray rented the space. Since his two best friends were artists, he decided to open an art gallery. This year, Murray’s impulse, the Govinda Gallery, is celebrating its 34th anniversary on 34th Street in Georgetown. According to Murray, this also makes his venture the most longest-lived art gallery in one location in the history of D.C. To get an idea of the venue’s rich history, all one needs to do is walk into Murray’s office. The photos and books scattered around the room offer a visual archive of the projects Murray has taken on and the people who have passed through Govinda’s door. Andy Warhol’s...

Chanukkah isn't over yet! There's still time to celebrate those eight crazy nights with "the baddest Heeb this side of Tel Aviv" for free on SlashControl. The Hebrew Hammer, starring the only dude who could make modified side curls sexy, Adam Goldberg, is a comedy that takes its cues from '70s movies like Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and Shaft and but has more in common with take-offs on the Blaxploitation genre like Black Dynamite.
Mordechai Jefferson Carver (Goldberg) and his buddy Mohammed Ali Paula Abdul Rahim (Mario Van Peebles*) band together with Hebrew hottie Esther Bloomenbergensteinenthal (the adorable Judy Greer, aka Kitty Sanchez from Arrested Development) to fight Santa's wayward son, played by Andy Dick. Can Morchechai and his buddies save the tribe from a boozy Santa Jr. in an ugly sweater? Will Esther and Mordy make it a double mitzvah on the Sabbath? Maybe! Watch it on SlashControl now.

An interview with Tom Felton as well as a photo (http://www.snitchseeker.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-49459) has been featured in The Gate (http://www.thegate.ca/front-page/04931/playing-the-bully-tom-felton-talks-harry-potter-half-blood-prince/), a Canadian publication. He talks about Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, hair, clothes and shooting Half-Blood Prince. Image: http://www.snitchseeker.com/gallery/albums/userpics/13923/normal_Tom-Felton_3760.jpg ---Quote--- *O.P.: Have you ever had a chance to tap into the experience of someone like Michael Gambon or Alan Rickman and get some advice from them?* *T.F.*: Umm, yeah, yeah. It’s not so much sitting there and asking them questions non-stop, but they’re a wealth of stories and of great jokes. So I think acting-wise you learn more from them just watching.
