Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).
He died Sunday of a stroke, according to media reports (first reported by Bleeding Cool), but the news of his death wasn’t made public until Wednesday evening.
The comic creator often brought a wry sense of humor to his work. That included a posthumous Facebook post he’d arranged to have put up Wednesday after his death,...

The holiday season is almost here and Amazon Prime is getting in the mood with its list of December 2021 releases. Sure there are the usual Christmas movies to be found but the real gift this month are two big original titles.
The sixth and final season of beloved sci-fi series The Expanse premieres on Dec. 10. Amazon is doing its usual release strategy of three episodes on the premiere day followed by a weekly schedule so there’s still some time to be spent with the crew of the Rocinante. The other big ticket item is the Desi and Lucy biopic Being the Ricardos on Dec. 21. Sure, Aaron Sorkin seems to be completely disinterested in I Love Lucy and Nicole Kidman bears no passing resemblance to the iconic comedienne whatsoever but uh…it’s a movie!

Exclusive: Sk Global and Gail Berman’s The Jackal Group have teamed to develop, finance and produce a series adaptation of Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s international bestseller Before the Coffee Gets Cold.
In a competitive situation, Sk Global has acquired the rights to the novel which was published last year. Originally adapted from Kawaguchi’s own stage play by the same name, Before the Coffee Gets Cold is set in a Tokyo back alley where a café has served carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else very unique for patrons: the chance to travel back in time – but only for the time it takes for their coffee to get cold. With faces both familiar and new, the story follows patrons who visit to take advantage of Café Funiculi Funicula’s time-traveling offer and revisit moments with family, friends and lovers...

There’s never a bad time for a new superhero show, mind you. But with Amazon’s brilliantly bloody The Boys having been off air for five or so months now, the streaming world is particularly due for a new supe. With its list of new releases for March 2021, Amazon is going to be rectifying that.
The animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic series Invincible is set to arrive on Amazon Prime this March 26. Kirkman’s comic series is a colorful, thrilling, and violent take on superhero myths and the series that it inspired will feature a truly impressive cast. Take that all into account and this will be an important addition to the streaming superhero canon.
Also arriving in March is another big ticket item for Amazon. The long-awaited Coming to America sequel, Coming 2 America, will premiere on March 5. Eddie Murphy returns as Prince Akeem Joffer who...

Exclusive: Sk Global and LA-based production and literary outfit The Mazur Kaplan Company have closed a first-look development deal, with an initial five books set for adaptation. The pact was jointly announced Tuesday by Sk Global President of Television Marcy Ross, and Mazur Kaplan principals Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan. Here are the first five books identified for television or feature adaptation under the pact, along the creative auspices attached to each project:

As stay-at-home orders started to crash over the world at the end of March, Diamond Comics Distributors announced that it would be suspending shipping of new books. Diamond has been functioning essentially as a monopoly for years, so this move meant, for all intents and purposes, the end of new comics releases, and it’s been that way for a month. But now, DC Comics announced that new comics will be hitting shops on April 28th, and the way they’re doing it could be a long-term shift in how we get the comic books we love.
The new releases are a scaled back list of new titles, not the full list of books one would expect to come from DC on a regular basis. Shipping on the 28th are Laura Marks & Kelley Jones’ Hill House book, Daphne Byrne #4; the final issue of Si Spurrier and Bilquis Evely’s run...

The Hero Nation Index is a Monday round-up of news from the genre sector.
Since the very first Star Trek mission aired on NBC in September 1966 the far-future brand has been defined as much by its “family” dynamic and crew ensembles as by its sci-fi concepts and alien adversaries. That heritage presents a challenge to the producers of the newest iteration, Star Trek: Picard, the eighth Trek series but the first named after a single individual.
How will the new CBS All-Access series carry on Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s “family tradition” by launching a solo mission built around one character, even if it is longtime fan-favorite Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart)?
“It’s a great and necessary question and it’s something that has been baked into the DNA of Picard,” Alex Kurtzman, the show’s executive producer, said when I asked him the...

I have always been a big Legion of Super-Heroes fan and early on, designated Star Boy as my favorite Legionnaire. Maybe it’s because he was an underdog hero, but I’ve always liked him so was thrilled to see he would take center stage in the just-released Justice League vs. the Fatal Five. I admit to being a little less than thrilled they were going with the mentally unbalanced Star Boy as depicted in the Brad Meltzer run of Justice League. But, by pairing him with agoraphobic Jessica Cruz, I could understand the larger themes at work, I was fine with it.
I just wish their final product lived up to their intentions (and all the high-faulting hype seen on the bonus material). Instead, we get an over-stuffed, under-edited work that makes very little sense.

We hold our heroes to incredibly high standards, whether they are fictional or real. For those that are historical, crucial moments have been swept under the rug while landmark moments are emblazoned forever in textbooks with little context. Some of those details become twisted into fiction. Others remain forgotten, dusty details that make many of these heroes much more complex, more tangible, more interesting, and ultimately, more human. Take George Washington for example. We all remember hearing tales of him chopping down the cherry tree, then leading the American Revolution as general of the Continental Army, crossing the Delaware River […]

Love him or hate him, the fact of the matter is that we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of Ralph Dibny Aka the Elongated Man in The Flash season 5 due to Hartley Sawyer signing on as a series regular. Though his stretchy powers may not translate all that well to live action and the character annoyed me for the longest time, he matured rather well near the end of the show’s fourth year, imparting the right words of wisdom at the right time.
Should you be familiar with his comic book counterpart, then you’re aware of how Ralph is actually one of the greatest detectives that the DC Universe has to offer. This is something the TV show has merely hinted at to this point, but it sounds like Mr. Dibny will get to show off his skills before long, as executive producers Todd Helbing had...

DC Comics have of late been celebrating the 80th anniversary of both a flagship title, in Action Comics, and their flagship character, Superman. Both are, of course, fully worthy of such accolades. Action Comics has been continuously published since the dawn of the comic book industry, and without Superman there would possibly be no comic book industry. He was the spark that lit the flame. I have already reviewed DC’s 80 Years of Superman book, which was a love letter to every decade of Superman’s adventures, cherry picking some of the many high points from the 1930′s to the present day. It was very much a look back at Action Comics greatest hits, and a great reminder it was too. But what about the future?

For Barbara Bush, family always came first. "She didn’t come off as a first lady but as a loving, caring mother," friend Brad Meltzer exclusively tells Closer. "She told me to read to my children at night — it wasn’t about the book, but holding the kids on your lap and loving them. She was a truly incredible mother and grandmother." When Barbara died at age 92 on April 17, she left a unique legacy: She was the better half of the longest presidential marriage in history, having been wed to George H.W. Bush for 73 years, and she was also the mother of President George W. Bush. Thanks to Barbara’s steely spine, wry one-liners and plainspoken style, Americans cherished her as much as her family did. "I always knew Barbara was the most beloved woman in the world, and in fact I used to tease her that I had a complex about that fact.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest draws of Solo: A Star Wars Story is seeing the beloved duo at the center of the film.
We are, of course, referring to Han and Chewbacca, otherwise known as the galaxy’s greatest double act. But considering the Ron Howard-directed spinoff takes place long before A New Hope – and before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, too – Solo is all set to deep dive into the early days of Han and Chewie’s friendship, as they begin to mosey their way through the galaxy’s criminal underworld.
That means we’ll be running into a number of other familiar characters as well, like Lando Calrissian, for one, while rumors have pointed to everyone from Boba Fett to Jabba the Hutt appearing, too. And while that all remains unconfirmed at the moment, the latest report suggests that none other than R2-D...

Love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge that every superhero you admire today owes their existence to the Man of Steel – and it all started back in 1938 with the release of Action Comics #1. In those pages, we saw the debut of Superman, who soon went on to completely take over that title and headline an ongoing series of his own.
Originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Big Blue has since inspired fans in radio productions, animation, live action cinema and especially the realm of television, which is seemingly never bereft of Kal-El or his supporting characters for too long.
Not surprisingly, DC Comics intend on honoring his enduring legacy this spring with the historic release of Action Comics #1000, the first comic book to organically reach that milestone. (Face it, Deadpool‘s tongue-in-cheek thousandth issue doesn’t count.) And as such, it obviously won’t be your average twenty-odd page release.

Moving Target: The History and Evolution of Green Arrow by Richard Gray. Sequart, $17.99 paperback; $6.99 Kindle edition
Way back when, Green Arrow was sort of the “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” of the superhero set. For a long time, fans could enjoy a new Green Arrow adventure just about every month, but he didn’t enjoy the headliner popularity of his hero pals like Batman or even Wonder Woman.
That’s all almost forgotten now. Today, so many fans enjoy this modern-day Robin Hood in comics, on TV and with licensed merchandise.
For some, Green Arrow became “a thing” when he debuted on TV, first as one of Superboy’s pals in Smallville and then in his own series. (He was briefly on Saturday morning cartoons before that too.)
Comics fan, and local dad, Greg Parker started with the TV series and now reads the comics. “In today’s...

I love comics. It's my thing. I read them, study them, look deep into them. I think that everyone that writes has something they really get, whether it's games, movies, tv or just news. I feel something that I have an intensive history with is comics. Which makes me so excited about this new History Channel two-part series special all about the hidden origin stories of comics biggest heroes.
The cable network has planned to air the two-part special called Superheroes Decoded on April 30th and May 1st.
The first part will look at the creation of iconic heroes such as Batman, Superman, Captain America, Spider-Man and Wonder Woman and how they were influenced by history and how they changed through the years as we went through different wars and events.

As much as we’d love to have superheroes here in the real world to help us through the darkest of times, we have to accept that it’s unfortunately not going to happen. Still, that doesn’t mean these characters can’t inspire, effectively bringing out the best in us when our fellow man needs us most. Thankfully, this notion isn’t lost on the talented people who currently bring these icons to life, thus bringing about Love is Love.

Here’s a scenario straight out of a political thriller by Brad Meltzer, a satirical graphic novel by Gail Simone, a seasonal arc of 24, or the warped mind of your columnist:
Reuters is reporting that Vladimir Putin, the Russian dictator president orders denies interference with the 2016 American Presidential election following the hospitalization of Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton for suspected polonium 210 chronic radiation poisoning. It was Polonium 210 acute radiation exposure that killed former Kgb officer Alexander Litvenko in just three weeks. The former Kgb officer had been granted political asylum in the United Kingdom.
In response to this news, Donald Trump has tweeted “Told you she was sick!”
Hoo boy, if I posted that on my Facebook page I’d be the darling of every conspiracy nut in the world. And might even warrant a visit from the Secret Service…or Jack Bauer. (Chloe, you rock, woman!)

The Miami Marlins and New York Mets decided to hold Star Wars night last Friday at Marlins Park, and everything was going fine until author, Lost History host, and possible Dark Lord of the Sith Brad Meltzer took to the mound to throw the first pitch. An impromptu light sabre duel broke out between the author and mascot Billy the Marlin, and while we have no idea how the fight ended, we’re assured Billy is safe and sound. I’m sure he only suffered only minimal force lightning burns.

Identity Crisis is a DC mini-series that love or hate is a legitimate benchmark on the DC timeline noting the company’s trends as the beginning of a shift in their line’s direction as a whole. While being far removed from my introduction to the DC Universe, as I had been a fan of several characters and runs at one time or another prior to reading it, it is the series that made me a fan of the DC Universe and ultimately is the series I credit for bringing me back to the hobby itself after more than a decade away. I was what most would identify as as Marvel zombie band excluding scattered reads, and I’d offer I didn’t view DC so much as having fell off as much as me simply not ever being alive when it was ever ‘on’. One day, no longer a comic collector or reader,...

Batman is pretty spry for a 75-year-old super hero. It’s easy to explain away Superman staying so fit and young over three quarters of a century: he’s an indestructible alien powered by our sun. Bruce Wayne and his alter ego are perfect examples for the phrase, “You’re only as old as you think you are.” As far as he’s concerned, he’s still the same guy who pulled on the cape and cowl back in June of 1939 to solve “The Case of the Crime Syndicate.”
I won’t deny that Superman is the most powerful super hero in the world. He also stood tall as the greatest Boy Scout and patriot of the U.S.A. Until recently, however, I’ve never been able to fully connect to the Man of Steel. He was too perfect and too strong. Now, DC Comics has given the character...

What better to way to open up the 75th anniversary year for Batman than to start it off with a celebration of the 27th issue of Detective Comics through 27 tales taking up 96 pages? I'm sure many readers might know that the Dark Knight made his debut in the pages of Detective Comics in 1939. However, it never hurts to educate newer enthusiasts and that's exactly what the writers and artists do in this issue.
Writers featured in Detective Comics #27 include Brad Meltzer, Gregg Hurwitz, Peter J. Tomasi, Francesco Francavilla, Mike Barr, John Layman, and Scott Snyder. Each one uses their talents to spin a yarn which pays tribute to the Caped Crusader and his 75 year legacy of crimefighting. I found myself emotionally touched by certain of the more sentimental stories.
