Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney poses backstage with the Oscar® for Adapted screenplay, for work on “Moonlight”
“This is not a joke. Moonlight has won Best Picture. “Moonlight,” Best Picture [He holds up the card announcing the winner]”
After the “Cinderella, little-movie-that-could, made for only $1.5M with zero stars,” won Best Picture at the 89th Oscars, Moonlight easily became our first pick of one of the many highlights from Sunday’s show.
Back in the pressroom director/producer Barry Jenkins said about the mixup, “No explanation. Things just happen, you know? But I will say I saw two cards. And so things just happen, you know? I did ‑‑ but ‑‑ and because ‑‑ I wanted to see the card to see the card. And Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. This year's Oscars ceremony went off alright, but not without a hitch (or two).
During the In Memoriam section, a photo of Australian producer Jan Chapman (Love Serenade, Lantana, The Babadook) was shown next to the name of late costume designer Janet Patterson, with whom Chapman worked on several Jane Campion films including The Piano, Bright Star and Holy Smoke..
Patterson died in October last year. Her final film was Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd, starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts..
.I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson," the still-very-much-breathing Chapman told Variety..
"I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered.

Sound mixer Kevin O’Connell had lost out 20 times before last night’s ceremony.
Forget Moonlight, Emma Stone or even Asghar Fahardi, the most heart-warming winner at the 2017 Oscars was Kevin O’Connell, who picked up the best sound mixing award for Hacksaw Ridge.
Sound engineer O’Connell had previously been nominated 20 times without winning, leading The Guardian to dub him the “unluckiest nominee in the history of the Academy Awards”.
After finally winning the Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge alongside Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace, O’Connell said: “I can’t even tell you the experience that it was for me. As much as I thought I was going to know what it felt like, I didn’t.
“And I have to tell you, it was the greatest feeling in my entire life and I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had, especially to work with these guys and I’m so grateful. It’s amazing...

In one of the biggest shocks in Academy Awards history, the final award of the night, Best Picture, was mistakenly announced.
Moonlight won best picture at the 89th Oscars after La La Land was erroneously reported announced as the winner.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read La La Land right after Emma Stone won best actress for her role in the modern-day musical. After the cast took the stage, a producer for La La Land corrected things and said, “[Actually] ‘Moonlight’ is the winner … this is not a joke.”
The La Times exclusively spoke to best picture presenter Warren Beatty backstage after the history-making mistake that briefly awarded La La Land the honor instead of rightful winner Moonlight and the legendary director explained what happened onstage.
“I looked down at the card and thought, ‘This is very strange, because it says best actress.’ Maybe there was a misprint. I don’t know what happened.

Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace won an Academy Award for best sound mixing. And though they were Australia’s only winners, the number of nominees still made 2017 a special year
With Australia receiving a record 14 Academy Award nominations, 2017 was always going to be a special year at the Oscars. Not many Aussies walked out of Hollywood’s night of nights wielding golden statuettes (more on that in a moment) but nobody can say we didn’t occupy more spots on the ballot box – or take home more show bags worth $300,000 – than ever before.
Ordinarily this kind of “at least we kept lots of seats warm” observation might sound like loser talk. But it’s hard not to feel a twinge of national pride when, for the first time, two of the best picture nominees were Australian (Lion and Hacksaw Ridge) and – also for the first time – one of...

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

“La La Land,” as expected, dominated the Oscar crafts, with Damien Chazelle’s musical valentine taking four awards for cinematography, production design, score, and original song. Still, it was predicted to win at least three more.
And it was a great night for Disney and its trio of winners: the zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” (animated feature), Disney Animation’s third Oscar in four years, which trumpeted tolerance ahead of the Presidential election; Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” (animated short), Pixar’s R&D sculpting project that ended its 15-year shorts drought; and Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” (VFX), which innovated photographic-based realism. The award was shared by production VFX supervisor Rob Legato, Mpc’s VFX supervisor Adam Valdez, Weta Digital’s VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and Andrew R. Jones, the animation supervisor.
In winning his third Oscar, Legato expanded a live-action ethos for believably integrating virtual characters and environments (created by...

It finally happened for Kevin O’Connell.

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

Governors act on recommendation of sound branch executive committee.
Greg P Russell, who worked on Michael Bay’s war film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, has been removed from the list of sound mixing nominees for an alleged violation of Academy campaign regulations.
The Academy announced the development on Saturday – one day before the 89th annual Academy Awards – after it emerged Russell had called fellow members of the sound branch during the nominations phase to make them aware of his work on the film.
The action is in direct violation of campaign regulations that prohibit telephone lobbying.
An additional nominee from the film will not replace Russell. The remaining sound mixing nominees from the film are Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.
The Academy’s board of governors voted on Thursday to act upon the recommendation of the sound branch executive committee.

O’Connell, 59, has worked in Hollywood for nearly 40 years, and is one of the most respected practitioners of his craft. But he is best known for a dubious distinction: in Oscar history, no person has accumulated more nominations without ever winning. The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

It was hardly the first Hollywood movie about journalism or crusading reporters, but Alan J. Pakula’s 1976 political thriller All The President’s Men nevertheless changed the genre in ways that are still being reflected in recent films like Spotlight and Snowden. Andy Wright discusses the classic movie’s stylistic choices in a piece for Atlas Obscura called “How All The President’s Men Defined The Look Of Journalism On Screen.” Even though the film won Oscars for Jason Robards’ supporting performance as editor Ben Bradlee and William Goldman’s adapted screenplay, Wright does not focus on acting or writing in his analysis. Instead, he theorizes, the real influence of All The President’s Men can be seen in its lighting, costumes, and set decoration. The movie’s signature style is defined by grungy garages, rumpled clothing, and cluttered desks.

This is a trailer for a great looking documentary on the history of movie posters calledTwenty-Four By Thirty-Six. It was directed by Kevin Burke and it will take us through the history of movie posters from their earliest conception, through the golden age of Hollywood, all the way to the limited edition screen prints that are being created independently by artists from all over the world. This looks like it could be a really interesting doc.

"I’m really excited about where Twenty-Four by Thirty-Six is headed and how far it’s come along – we’re about 80% of the way through production and couldn’t be happier with the way the story has come together. Though he’s keeping pretty busy with the several Avatar sequels that are currently in production, James Cameron is taking a bit of a break from the world of blue people to bring us an underwater adventure in the form of James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D. The doc will have the director in a starring role, with John Bruno, Andrew Wright and Ray Quint sitting behind the camera.
The film will follow Cameron and his crew as they attempt to reach Challenger Deep, which is known as the deepest part of the ocean. Apparently, this was the first extensive expedition that attempted to reach Challenger Deep and included 13 dives. Along the way, 68 new species were identified and on March 26, 2012, the expedition culminated in Cameron’s solo dive, which took him 35,787 feet below the surface of the ocean.

With the impending release of MGM’s 1952 classic musical romp Singin’ In The Rain on Special Edition Blu-ray HeyUGuys were invited to witness the most recent translation of the movie masterpiece onto the West End Stage.
I had heard that Singin’ In The Rain The Musical is excellent; originally arriving in London in the early 1980s and enjoying various revamps and relative popularity between then and 2012. However I must point out now that I am a die-hard fan of 1940s and 50s Hollywood musical comedies. I was 9 years old when Leonardo DiCaprio became the poster boy for tweenage sexual awakening in Romeo + Juliet and Titanic but thanks to Rock Hudson, Carey Grant and Howard Keel, I just didn’t get it. Consequently I arrived at the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue feeling optimistic for the evening’s performance but fairly certain of one thing: there is only one Gene Kelly.

Nick has already proved himself a strong leader, and his ability to deliver and present challenging work has been recognised as a unique strength by our clients.”

Shaun Micallef of Talkin ‘Bout Your Generation and Newstopia co-created the series with Stephens.
Stephens told Encore: “We’ve found a tone that is not absurd at all, its quite grounded and real.”

Roundups on some of the more interesting titles opening this weekend have been updated through today: The Last Picture Show, 50/50, Margaret, Take Shelter and My Joy — see, too, Daniel Kasman's review — as well as another on the documentaries.
"Hillbilly horror is nothing new," writes Cheryl Eddy in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. "Some might mark its heyday as the 1970s, a decade containing Deliverance (1972), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Hills Have Eyes (1977), and I Spit On Your Grave (1978). Others might point to Herschell Gordon Lewis's immortal Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964), probably cinema's most persuasive example of why Yankees road-tripping below the Mason-Dixon Line should never, for any reason, detour off the main highway…. But what if, asks Eli Craig's Tucker and Dale vs Evil, you were totally misjudging those sinister-seeming whiskey-tango yokels? What if, despite being a little unwashed and fond of sharp objects and power tools, they...

Sanctum 3D
Stars: Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd, Dan Wylie, Rhys Wakefield, Alice Parkinson | Written by John Garvin, Andrew Wright | Directed by Alister Grierson
Frank McGuire (Roxburgh) is a successful and respected cave diver, exploring one of the last unexplored cave systems in the world, Esa-Ala. Accompanied by his billionaire sponsor Carl Hurley (Gruffudd) and his son Josh (Wakefield) amongst others, his expedition takes a terrifying turn when a cyclone traps the explorers in the cave. With colleagues topside already assuming the party is dead, the only way they can escape is to explore the caves further and hope to find a route to the sea.
Sanctum is based on screenwriter Andrew Wright’s real life experiences and while this is marketed as a James Cameron produced picture (Cameron has worked on documentaries previously with both John Garvin and Andrew Wright), the only obvious Cameron trademark on this is the 3D.

The James Cameron produced 3D adventure movie Sanctum has done reasonable business in the west. The film, directed by Alister Grierson and inspired by events experienced by its screenwriter Andrew Wright, has already made double the money invested in it despite universally poor reviews, and hasn’t yet made it to the Far East. That date now looks to be set back even further following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that has struck Japan’s coastline this month.
Sanctum was scheduled for a theatrical release on April 22nd, but given the volume of people who have died in the devastated towns on Japan’s east coast, scenes from the film in which a cyclone endangers the characters by sending gallons of water down the cave have been deemed potentially insensitive by distributors Toho-Towa. Other films that have been delayed as a result of the earthquake have been Battle: Los Angeles,...
