In 1980, the auspiciously named first baseman Willie Mays Aikens made baseball history when he hit two home runs in two World Series games, a feat that wasn’t repeated until 2009. That year, the Kansas City Royals player was second in home runs and RBIs only to teammate, friend and future Hall of Famer, George Brett.
Directed by Marcel Sarmiento, “The Royal” isn’t obsessed with Aikens’ on-the-field triumphs. Instead — with a script by Gregory W. Jordan, based on the 2012 book he co-wrote with Aiken, “Willie Mays Aikens: Safe at Home” — the movie recounts what happened to the major league slugger after he served 14 years for crack cocaine possession and distribution.
In 1994, under the inequitable federal sentencing guidelines, Aikens was sentenced to more than 20 years for possession with intent to sell 50 grams of crack cocaine. (He’d have had to be in possession of five kilos of powdered coke to receive a similar sentence.

"Without a doubt, he was the most intimidating pitcher in the history of the game." Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Facing Nolan, profiling the baseball legend Nolan Ryan. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival last month, and will show in theaters on May 24th for a special event. In the world of Major League Baseball no one has created a mythology like Nolan Ryan. Told from the point of view of the hitters who faced him (which is a great setup for a doc about him) and the teammates who revered him, Facing Nolan is the definitive documentary film about a Texas legend. Directed by Bradley Jackson the film features new interviews with Nolan Ryan, President George W. Bush, Craig Biggio, Steve Buechele, George Brett, Rod Carew, Roger Clemens, Tom Grieve, Tom House, Randy Johnson, Pete Rose, Ivan Rodriguez, Bobby Valentine,...

Who doesn't need a pint glass of Chardonnay with a server on standby after Brockmire Season 3 Episode 2?
My heart breaks for Jim Brockmire, and let's be serious; I needed a drink after this one.
Jules' career might be on the incline, but she still doesn't have the pull to ask the elite for personal favors. She's not afraid to ask Jim to do it for her, though.
First of all, I've missed Jules and Amanda Peet.
Peet is so good as Jules, and she matches all of Hank Azaria's comical strides step for step.

Of course it was Jim Brockmire (Hank Azaria) who was responsible for the grossest weeks of Bob Costas’ illustrious sportscasting career.
In the “Brockmire” Season 3 trailer, released Wednesday, the titular IFC character tells guest-star Costas: “I was the one who gave you pink eye at the Sochi Olympics.”
“But the tough part was getting it in the second eye,” he twists the knife.
We don’t even know what that means Brockmire must have done back in 2014, but it was surely disgusting. This is “Brockmire.”

IFC pulled off the double play with two more seasons of Brockmire on deck. Here's what we know about Brockmire Season 3.
Hope springs eternal on Opening Day. The grass is freshly cut, the vendors are hawking peanuts and crackerjacks, and Jim Brockmire’s liver has yet to make a trip to the disabled list. Old Brockmire will have to keep it together for a few more seasons: IFC renewed the baseball comedy for two additional seasons. Ahead of the Brockmire season 2 premiere, IFC confirmed a greenlight for Brockmire season 3 and 4.
In season two, baseball broadcaster Jim Brockmire (Hana Azaria) moves to New Orleans with his new best friend, Charles (Tyrel Jackson Williams), and hopes to continue his quest to return to the big leagues after a pitstop in the minor leagues. The most respected and feared pitch in baseball is definitely the fastball.
Every major league pitcher strives to perfect the fastball and every pitcher has the fastball pitch in their repertoire. Only a few can have the bragging rights to throw more than 100 miles per hour or even to have the fastest fastball ever.
In Jonathan Hock’s documentary Fastball, it explores baseball’s favorite pitch by attempting on who may have the fastest fastball in history from the perspective of the scientific community and the past/present famous baseballs players who tried to hit or to throw that pitch.
Some of the interviews include Justin Verlander, David Price, Derek Jeter, Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson and more great players trying to push their perspective on the fastball. The documentary is narrated by Kevin Costner.

He was way too dry! Paul Rudd isn't the only Kansas City Royals fan in Hollywood, but he's the one who got his own personal beer shower after the Royals won the 2015 World Series last night, marking the team's first win in 30 years.
"Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet had a rivalry going with Mets fan Jimmy Kimmel, so we'll have to wait and see how that taunting goes on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (beyond Eric's smug tweets), but for now just watch "Ant-Man" star Paul Rudd get sprayed with love after the Kansas win:

It’s amazing to think how far Sce San Diego and the Mlb: The Show franchise have come over the past decade. The first entry in the revitalized series was a pleasant enough surprise, but was still overshadowed by the more well-known Mlb 2K series. Over time, though, the quality of The Show began to steadily improve, and in turn, gamers turned to it in order to get their digital baseball fix.
Now, after several years of dominance, Mlb 15: The Show essentially finds itself alone on the marketplace, as Sce San Diego’s digital replication of America’s pastime has turned away all competitors. With little opposition, outside of the digital only R.B.I. Baseball series, the question has turned to whether the studio would continue to innovate, or whether they would become complacent with their success.
At this point, it almost feels ridiculous to talk about the...

There are few topics that get baseball fans more riled up than the question of who should (or should not) be in the Hall of Fame. People tend to take that shit extremely personally, as if denying your pet case for induction a plaque in Cooperstown — or giving one to an "undeserving" player ahead of him — is somehow tantamount to negating your fandom, your childhood or even your very existence as a human being.

While it seems unlikely a 17-year-old singer from New Zealand and a 60-year-old Major League Baseball player would have anything in common, Lorde and George Brett have a very special connection.
Last night (April 15) the “Tennis Court” songstress met up with the Hall of Famer in Las Vegas after several failed attempts to coordinate their schedules.
The story is, Lorde was looking through a July 1976 copy of National Geographic when she saw a photo “of this dude just signing baseballs. He was a baseball player and his shirt said, ‘Royals.’ It was just that word. It’s really cool.”
Brett previously had to miss Lorde’s Kansas City concert, so he sent her an autographed jersey that read, “Lorde, you are Royal to me.”...

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson broke form with baseball's oh so important unwritten rules last night, instructing umpires to inspect the glove of Rays pitcher Joel Peralta for pine tar. Rays manager Joe Maddon called Johnson's play "bogus," "bush" and a "pussy move." And Maddon is one hundred percent correct (video of Maddon discussing the incident below).
Peralta pitched for the Nationals in 2010, so his former teammates must have known that Peralta likes to load his glove with pine tar, which is illegal for pitchers, but not the least bit uncommon. Johnson, acting on inside information on Peralta, requested that umpires inspect Peralta's glove. Talk about stealing the bride's limelight on her special day.
Global music legend and outspoken gay marriage advocate Elton John is certainly in a lot of the wedding photos that conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh just posted on his Facebook page.
The Rocket Man, 63, serenaded the 400 guests at Limbaugh's Saturday (Aug 7) wedding to his fourth wife, Kathryn Rogers, who is 26 years his junior. People reports that the couple had a lavish reception in the Ponce de Leon ballroom of the Breakers hotel in Palm Beach.
How much was Sir Elton paid for his night's work? $1 million. Gulp.
Wedding guests included former Bush adviser Karl Rove; actor-politician Fred Thompson; former Kansas City Royals slugger George Brett; Fox News commentator Sean Hannity; former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani; former Clinton adviser James Carville and his wife, Gop analyst Mary Matalin; and golfer Tom Watson. Hollywoodnews.com: Conservative right was entertained by far flung left after radio commentator Rush Limbaugh hired Elton John to sing at his wedding.
Per People magazine, John, who is an outspoken gay civil-union advocate, crooned to a crowd of 400 until the late hours of Saturday. Limbaugh, 59, tied the knot with Kathryn Rogers, 33, in Palm Beach, Florida.
Price for Limbaugh to hire Elton John: $1 million. Given John’s politics, it’s jaw-dropping to hear that he would actually play at the wedding of someone so controversial as Limbaugh. No word as to whether John will donate his paycheck to charity.
The wedding included an all-star line-up from the Republican party including: former Bush adviser Karl Rove; actor-politician Fred Thompson; former Kansas City Royals slugger George Brett; Fox News commentator Sean Hannity; former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani; New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft; former Clinton adviser James Carville and his wife,...

Chicago – Universal Home Video is releasing a wave of titles timed for Father’s Day gifts. Some of their choices - “Field of Dreams,” “Fletch” - seem like logical picks for a better HD daddy day than another striped tie while others seem chosen purely because they have the word “Men” or “Man” in the title - “Children of Men,” “Cinderella Man,” “Inside Man”.
Most are pretty good and some are great. Pick your favorite and give it to your Blu-Ray pop.
“Inside Man” will be released on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009.
The other five titles were released on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009.
“Children of Men”
