It’s fitting that Johnny Cash’s life became a major Hollywood movie. The country music superstar found success after enduring tragedy (which became a major inspiration in his life), addiction, and forbidden love. It’s a reason his songs resonate with so many people. Sun Records founder Sam Phillips gave Cash his big break in the music business. There wouldn’t be a Man in Black otherwise, but Cash had mixed feelings about Phillips and his business practices, and he was right to see the good and bad.

Twangin' Tom Hiddleston lights up the screen whenever he sings as country music legend Hank Williams in the biopic I Saw the Light, which plays like a dramatization of a Wikipedia entry. A sense of doom hangs over the picture, since it's no secret that Williams died young in the early 1950s. Rather than focusing on the bright spots of Williams' life and career -- as nicely handled in The Buddy Holly Story (1978) and La Bamba (1987), to cite two of many examples -- filmmaker Marc Abraham furthers the bleak impression by choosing a curiously dry path that is rarely compelling. Drawing from Colin Escott's book Hank Williams: The Biography, this is the first produced screenplay by Abraham, a veteran producer who made his...

Title: I Saw The Light Director: Marc Abraham Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olson, Bradley Whitford, David Krumholtz and Cherry Jones. ‘I Saw The Light’ is based on Colin Escott’s award-winning biography of the legendary country western singer Hank Williams, who in his brief life created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life. British actor, Tom Hiddleston, is incredibly effective in projecting the soul of a man haunted by his own demons through his eyes, even more than through his singing; and he impressively provides his own vocals. Once set to have arrived in theaters last week, Sony Pictures Classics decided to move I Saw the Light, the Hank Williams biopic which finds Tom Hiddleston in the leading role, to 2016. Coming from longtime producer Marc Abraham (Children of Men, Dawn of the Dead), whose directorial debut was Flash of Genius, the film will now arrive in March and today brings the first trailer.
We said in our review, “The opening to Marc Abraham‘s I Saw the Light holds a lot of intrigue. Based on Colin Escott‘s biography about hillbilly legend Hank Williams, the start goes from a faux black and white newsreel interview with producer Fred Rose (Bradley Whitford) recounting how one-of-a-kind the singer was to a magically lit performance by Tom Hiddleston as Williams (the actor sings every note and the actors playing his band pluck every string). He’s sitting on a stool with a hazy spotlight pouring down,...

Tinseltown took over Music City this past weekend, with the glitzy premiere of the highly anticipated Hank Williams biopic, I Saw the Light. Stars of the big-screen adaptation of the book, Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott, George Merritt and William Macewen, walked the red carpet (which, for the record, was actually green), as invited guests filled the twin theaters at Nashville's historic Belcourt theater. British actor Tom Hiddleston turns in a career-defining role as the troubled singer-songwriter, whose influence is seen not only in nearly every country artist who came after him,...

The life and times of Hank Williams may not be the story everyone is looking for, but with a legend that is impossible to deny, and a solid cast, this could be a film that turns out to be for everyone.
I Saw the Light has released some new images, and if you’re very familiar with Williams’ life, they’re a very interesting batch of photos, revealing a great deal about the moments you can expect in the film. On the other hand, you knew they were there anyway.
Hiddleston, who is already in theaters with Crimson Peak, may seem an odd choice at first, but what we’ve already seen of him should remove any doubts, and though no one could get that smile exactly right, some of these images are downright creepy. Plus, Hiddleston and Olsen have proven themselves over the last few years, and ought to...

Music biopics come in every shape and size, and considering some have earned award season acclaim — “I Walk The Line,” “Crazy Heart,” “Ray,” et al. — they’re not going away any time soon (even when their conventions gets spoofed by films like “Walk Hard”). Late ‘80s rappers N.W.A. got their due this summer, and the next major music biography film is "I Saw the Light," which centers on legendary country western singer Hank Williams. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life. It stars Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers,” “Crimson Peak”) as Williams and Elizabeth Olsen (“Oldboy,” “Godzilla”) as his wife, Audrey Mae Williams. Based on the book “Hank Williams: The Biography” by Colin Escott, the picture tells the story of the legendary performer, who rose high and died young at the age of 29. Many assumed the...

After the initial slate for the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival was announced last month there were many observers, including this pundit, who wondered of the annual September event had once again lost the battle of premieres to its Fall festival cousins. While debuting Ridley Scott's "The Martian," Jean Marc Valle's "Demolition" and Michael Moore's "Where Do We Invade Next" is nothing to sneeze at the fact some of the most anticipated films of the year are heading to Venice and Telluride first has to be a bit disheartening. Especially when it's your 40th anniversary. Never fear fans of the Great White North, Toronto always seems to land some eyebrow raising last minute additions and this year is no different. Today Tiff announced that David Gordon Green's "Our Brand Is Crisis" with Sandra Bullock, Marc Abraham's "I Saw The Light" with Tom Hiddleston, Catherine Hardwicke's "Miss You Already...

Will this upcoming awards season be the year of Tom Hiddleston? The popular Brit already has Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak" on tap for October and, now, he's officially in the mix for his performance as the iconic Hank Williams in Marc Abraham's "I Saw The Light." "Light" is based on Colin Escott's 1994 novel "Hank Williams: The Biography" and chronicles his rise to superstardom and tragic death at the age of 29. An autopsy revealed he died of a heart attack, but he was also a known alcoholic who had also developed addictions to morphine and other painkillers. Williams had 11 no. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart including two posthumously. Most notably known for this producer creds (Children of Men), Marc Abraham’s Hank Williams passion project has found a home with the Sony Pictures Classics. Check-marking Spc’s method of operation in acquiring titles with an already built-in fanbase, we’re expecting a Walk the Line type treatment for I Saw the Light. If we had to guess, it’ll contain generous musical outtakes in the Williams library, and in the best of worlds showcase a transcendental, fighting the demons perf from Tom Hiddleston and cover the bases of what would be a competitive/romantic/abusive dynamics with the equally headstrong Audrey Mae Williams (here played by Elizabeth Olsen). Look for a film festival launching – Telluride and/or Tiff would be appropriate.
