For Marcus Mumford, getting involved with the original music for “Daisy Jones & the Six” was a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
The Mumford & Sons frontman was working at L.A.’s Sound City Studios on his solo record with multi-instrumentalist and producer Blake Mills — who co-wrote and executive produced all 25 songs heard in the Prime Video series, which chronicles the rise and fall of a ’70s rock band — when Mills asked if he wanted to help write a tune for the show.
“It was a slower day for my record and Blake was like, ‘Look, do you wanna try this thing for Daisy?'” Mumford tells Variety. “And I often think that… writing begets more writing. If you’re able to flex a similar muscle in a different way, then it can often help the writing you have in front of you as well.

In Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel Daisy Jones & the Six, an oral history of a fictional Seventies rock band that imploded at the height of its fame, we get conflicting accounts of how the band became known as the Six before the troubled Daisy joined as the seventh member. The surviving musicians disagree on specifics, but all concur that it had to do with there being six people in the group at the time.
In Amazon Prime’s adaptation, the pre-Daisy incarnation of the band has one fewer member.

Japanese mystery writer Kōtarō Isaka saw great success with the adaptation of his novel "Maria Beetle," which became the Brad Pitt action flick, "Bullet Train." The highly-stylized film about five international assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train who find out that their missions are connected performed extremely well at the box office, putting the rest of Isaka's bibliography in high demand with Hollywood executives. As was announced today, the next tale from Isaka to get the cinematic treatment is "Seesaw Monster," aka "Shisō Monsutā."
"Seesaw Monster" is a wholly unique tale unrelated to Isaka's "Hitman" trilogy, which includes "Maria Beetle" and "Three Assassins," the latter of which was the source material for the 2015 Japanese revenge thriller film, "Grasshopper." Interestingly, "Shisō Monsutā" is one of Isaka's short story collections, so there are plenty of ways the stories within could be adapted.

Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault are boarding a bullet train for Netflix. The two actors are set to star in and produce a feature adaptation of the novel “Seesaw Monster,” by Kōtarō Isaka, who wrote the novel on which “Bullet Train” was based.
Plot details of the film are under wraps, but Netflix describes the film as an action-comedy that will see Hathaway and Hayek Pinault play rivals forced to work together. The “Seesaw Monster” book was published in Japan in 2019 and has not yet been released in English, so little information about its plot exists online.
News of the project follows the end of the theatrical run for “Bullet Train,” a Sony Pictures adaptation of Isaka’s thriller “Maria Beetle.” The book, the second in the mystery author’s “Hitman” trilogy, focused on a group of assassins attempting to carry out their assignments on the same Japanese bullet train ride.

Over the course of her career, performer Meryl Streep has played a variety of characters both fictional and real, portraying everyone from Karen Silkwood in Silkwood to the Witch in Into The Woods, even winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role along the way for her performances in Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady, with an additional Supporting win for Kramer vs. Kramer. Her next role will see her play an aging rocker in Ricki and the Flash, a role for which she learned to play the guitar.
The role will require Streep to sing, and while many of the songs she will perform in the film will be covers, there will be one notable exception. Titled Cold One, the song is written by frequent collaborators Johnathan Rice and Jenny Lewis, and is performed in two different ways by Streep in the film, both of which have now been released.

In 2008, Meryl Streep scored a summer smash with a little help from Abba in the musical romantic comedy "Mamma Mia." Now she's strapping on a guitar and hoping to hit all the right notes again for a seasonal hit with "Ricki And The Flash," but will it be a case of a sophomore slump? Or can she score another number one? Certainly, the elements involved are potentially promising. Diablo Cody ("Juno," "Young Adult") has penned the screenplay with Jonathan Demme ("Rachel Getting Married," "Silence Of The Lambs") directing the movie about an aging rocker who has spent more time on the road than at home, who reconnects with her children who are going through various crises. You can get a taste of the drama and comedy this one is putting together with the new trailer below, but that's not all. Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice wrote the song "Cold One" for the movie,...

It has been seven years since Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová stood on an Oscar stage, stunned and humbled while accepting the Best Song award for their timeless ditty, “Falling Slowly,” from Once. Slowly, the imitators of that modest Irish masterwork have started to appear. Song One, the debut film from Kate Barker-Froyland, owes much of its flavor and feeling to John Carney’s gen. From the downbeat acoustic touches and low-fi feel to the location shoots inside Williamsburg music stores and concert halls, her film tries to depict both the joy and grit involved in making music that Once displayed with ease. However, despite some lovely chemistry from the lead actors, Song One is too pleasant and not powerful enough to hook you into the central romance. Mere minutes after viewing the film, one also strains to remember how any of the tunes went.

"Song One," the first feature film from writer-director Kate Barker-Froyland, follows Franny (Anne Hathaway), an anthropologist who returns home to Brooklyn after her younger brother Henry (Ben Rosenfield) is hit by a car and falls into a coma. Franny makes a special connection with Henry's favorite musician James Forester (Johnny Flynn), who's facing some serious writers's block. It's a sweet film filled with excellent, understated performances, especially by Mary Steenburgen as Franny and Henry's mother, who struggles to connect with an emotionally distant daughter while fearing for her son's life. What people will be talking, and singing, about, however, is the soundtrack. The 'James Forester' songs, by Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice, are absolutely wonderful, and the way music and sound itself (Franny records the noise of the neighborhood to play for her brother) are used as storytelling devices is wonderfully original. At last nights premiere, at the Sunshine...

There's some winsome soul out there who will find this indie folk-scene romance just the thing: Johnny Flynn sings passionate songs penned by Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice, while Anne Hathaway beams, delicate as the inner ear of a butterfly, fresh moisture welling in those puddle-wide eyes. Hathaway plays a Ph.D. student called back to her Brooklyn home after her brother, a would-be singer-songwriter, is knocked into a coma. She trawls the city's open-mic nights to immerse herself in his suspended life. Hathaway's performance is brave, strong, wistful, and misty, and she's especially affecting when being wooed, gently, by Flynn, playing an indie-folkstar. He serenades the comatose brother; she buys a vintage keyboard; and they stay out until dawn, enchanted by the mov...

Having spent time winning praise and stealing hearts across a variety of major productions in the past few years — The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Les Misérables — Anne Hathaway is primed to make a return to the kind of indie romances that helped put her on the map with Kate Barker-Froyland’s musical drama, Song One.
Taking place within the musical scene of Brooklyn, the film will chart the story of Hathaway’s Franny who unexpectedly finds love in James Forester’s Johnny. What underpins this relationship, however, is the fact that Franny’s brother Henry (played here by Boardwalk Empire‘s Ben Rosenfield) recently suffered from a horrible accident that places him in a coma. As it turns out, the musically gifted Johnny is his long-time idol, giving Hathaway’s protagonist a poignant and tragic connection to her sibling as she tries to wean him back to the land of the living through music.

Song One may be packed with original songs written by Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice, but when we meet Anne Hathaway in this exclusive clip, she doesn't feel much like singing. As an archaeologist unmoored by the car accident that has left her brother in a coma, Hathaway has begun to steep herself in the things her brother loved most, including soulful folk balladeer Johnny Flynn, her sibling's favorite artist. She even treks out to Brooklyn to introduce herself to the musician, and while her nerves are still a little raw, perhaps she'll find healing (or even love) with the hunky, blond Brit, who does the lion's share of singing in this film — Hathaway herself only sings two of the tunes we hear in the film, despite possessing Oscar-vetted pipes. Still, when you've got a tender presence like Flynn on lead vocals, who's going to argue? You can check...

Jenny Lewis—Rilo Kiley’s former frontwoman—has been everywhere this year. Her July album, The Voyager, was a critical hit, and she’s been busy touring the country ever since. No stranger to the screen (Lewis has performed on and for film and TV on multiple occasions, and voiced the assistant director in 2008’s “Bolt”), she co-wrote a number of songs with Johnathan Rice for the upcoming Anne Hathaway film, “Song One.” Upon hearing of her brother’s hospitalization, Franny (Hathaway) returns home and winds up striking up a relationship with her comatose sibling’s favorite musician (played by Johnny Flynn). Though Flynn actually performs on-screen and on the soundtrack, his songs were largely written by Lewis and Rice. (The pair writes, performs, and is known collectively as Jenny and Johnny.) Considering that “Song One” is a film about an indie musician, it’s no surprise that the music...

And, as if you couldn’t guess, a love connection develops between Henry and Franny, despite her family trauma and his own shy nature. Set against a Brooklyn backdrop, Song One features original music composed by Jenny Lewis...

I do not understand a lot of things on the Internet. I do not understand the appeal of cat videos. I do not understand how Reddit works. And I do not understand why everyone hates Anne Hathaway. Does she kick puppies or is a massive racistc I just do not know why there are so many anti-Hathites. I think she is a talented actor who I enjoy seeing on screen. Sorry, people. Now, while she carves out time to go into deep space and talk about love, she also carves out time to star in small, Sundance dramas like Song One, where I am sure she also talks about love. Except here it is with musicians instead of scientists. That film, which is set to be released January 23, 2015, has its first poster and trailer today, both included below along with the film's synopsis. Song One contains many original songs written...

In Song One, Anne Hathaway plays Franny, an academic whose research in North Africa is cut short by an emergency phone call from home: her younger brother Henry has been hit by a car and is in a coma. Henry was an aspiring Brooklyn musician, a career development that had soured the siblings' relationship. But as she and her mother (Mary Steenburgen) reconnect around his hospital bed, she also gains a greater appreciation for her brother's commitment to music from the songs he left behind. She visits the clubs he frequented, and when the opportunity presents itself, she approaches her brother's favorite singer,...

abstew here. This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of the my favorite movies growing up, Troop Beverly Hills. (I mistakenly thought the woman with curly red hair on the VHS cover was my beloved Bette Midler, but when I realized it wasn't, I loved the movie too much to care and made my parents rent it at least once a month.) But all those times I watched those Wilderness Girls singing about the virtues of Cookie Time, I never thought that the actress playing Shelley Long's daughter, Hannah Nefler, would grow up to be my absolute favorite singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis. She writes the songs that make me remember that I have feelings. If you opened my chest it would be in the shape of Jenny Lewis.

Today, Jenny Lewis' premiered the music video for her Beck-produced song "Just One of the Guys." It is silly to perfection. And it has more than just Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway and Brie Larson in drag to unpackage. I think of Jenny Lewis as an artist whose spent a career surrounded by dudes. She started up with in Rilo Kiley at the age 22 with all-guys, toured with the Postal Service, written and recorded music with her boyfriend Johnathan Rice as Jenny & Johnny, works in an indie rock industry that is male-dominated. In her earliest career, she was a child actress, and now she writes scores and soundtracks for film. (Though, don't discount: she also recorded and toured with ladies The Watson Twins, who helped launch her as a solo act, a wonderful ensemble.) In a lot of industries, being "just one of the guys" holds serious social capitol as a woman.

The music in Anne Hathaway’s indie drama “Song One,” which premiered at Sundance, is crucial to the film’s storyline. Indie folk duo Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice — who record as Jenny & Johnny — were tasked with writing original songs for the movie’s musician character James Forester (Johnny Flynn), plus creating a score. Lewis, Rice and director Kate Barker-Froyland revealed their process to HitFix last month in Park City. Rice said he and Lewis talked a lot with Barker-Froyland about how “the script dictated a certain feeling.” They also found inspiration in some of their favorite songwriters. “I do think we have...

Seven years ago John Carny’s award winning classic Once screened at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and completely changed the genre of Indie Musicals. It was a runaway success, and incited a fervor in Hollywood producers who proceeded to flood the medium with clone after clone, until the genre’s novelty had become convoluted, dull and devoid of all substance. This cloning process, is most certainly how films like Song One made and accepted readily onto the festival circuit. To say Song One is an exact clone of Once would an exaggeration, but Carney’s work most certainly served as a heavy inspiration for this piece.
Song One’s opening scene essentially mimics that of Once. We are introduced to the character of Henry, played by Anton Yelchin doppelgänger Ben Rosenfield, as he performs a bevy of new songs to a desolate and uninterested New York metro station, who show what little appreciation they have,...

There comes a time in every festival where the slow burn of overbearing over-dramatic films imbues one with a feeling of general ambivalence. Every once in a while though, a film comes along that slashes it’s way through the thick layers of scar tissue, and penetrates deep into the heart and soul of our beings, reminding us why we started watching films in the first place. Rutterless is once such film.
Filmed in the small rural towns of Oklahoma, Rutterless tells the story of a Sam (Billy Crudup), as he comes to terms with the tragic loss of his son. For two years, Sam ostracizes himself from society, trading his luxury house for a small boat, and moving between the types of odds and ends job that allow him to retain his reclusive lifestyle. It’s not that he’s forgotten about his son, just that he refuses to confront it,...

Park City, Utah - Anne Hathaway calls her most recent film turn "the most unhip movie about Brooklyn ever." The "Les Miserables" actress is producer and lead in Sundance drama "Song One"; her character Franny has to fly home to New York's best borough to be by the side of her comatose brother Henry (Ben Rosenfield) and her anxious mother (Mary Steenburgen). Henry's music obsession James Forester (Johnny Flynn) enters into the picture; the result is a lot of acoustic and folk-influenced music and a love story centered around new tunes from songwriters Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice. Hathaway doesn't sing...

One can never be fully caught up at festivals but one does what one can. So today, three quick takes on movies I saw yesterday during a five-film day. Let's use their festival guide images as a framing device just because I always find it interesting which images movies use to promote themselves, don't you?

This still from Marjane Satrapi's (Persepolis) horror comedy looks nondescript enough until you pair the title with a man looking at his cat. Yes, they're "talking". The cat is the Scottish brogued "Mr Whiskers" and like 99% of cats in films he is unrepentantly evil. (Can we form a Anti-Cat Defamation Cinematic League or something?) And then you notice the woman's head (Gemma Arterton's to be precise) to the left. Gross! One thing you don't get at all from this still is the film's hard working production design, which is relentlessly candy...

Last week we brought you word that Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Beastie Boy Ad-Rock where bringing their musical skills to a couple of films headed to Sundance by providing a score (Lynn Shelton's "Laggies" and the baseball flick "No No: A Dockumentary," respectively). Well, that's just the tip of the iceberg. As you might suspect, the worlds of indie film and indie music aren't so far apart and there will be a lot of music to be heard in the films headed to Park City next week, so let's dive in... We previously reported it, but here's another reminder: Jenny Lewis alongside her boyfriend Johnathan Rice are providing the tunes for Anne Hathaway's "Song One" about a PhD student who becomes romantically involved with her brother's favorite musician. First look at the film here. Norwegian singer Sondre Lerche and Kato Ådland have teamed for "The Sleepwalker,...

Two music-based/centered movies on the way to Sundance, featuring a couple actresses we really dig. Onwards... Anne Hathaway goes indie with "Song One," which features music written by former Rilo Kiley frontwoman and solo artist Jenny Lewis alongside her boyfriend Johnathan Rice. Johnny Flynn, Mary Steenburgen and Ben Rosenfield co-star in the Kate Barker-Froyland directed film. Synopsis below: When an accident leaves her brother comatose, a woman sets out to retrace his life as an aspiring musician, leading to an unexpected relationship against the backdrop of Brooklyn’s music scene. Meanwhile, Elle Fanning will go jazz in "Low Down" alongside John Hawkes, Glenn Close, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and Flea (what a cast, nice work Jeff Preiss). Official synopsis: This adaptation of Albany’s memoir explores her journey to adulthood while being raised by her troubled father, bebop pianist Joe Albany.

Singer-songwriter Johnathan Rice hasn’t released any new music since his record I’m Having Fun Now with girlfriend and musical partner Jenny Lewis came out back in 2010. Now, Rice is making his mark with his deep voice and sweet melodies on his third solo record Good Graces. On latest single “Lou Rider,” Rice channels his inner Lou Reed with a “groove that is kinda Low Rider.” The song is an upbeat, alt-country track that showcases Rice’s husky vocals complemented by sweet backing vocals from Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. These ladies aren’t the only contributors to Rice’s album: the...

Anne Hathaway dreamed a dream ... of singing again! And it looks like that dream is coming true.
The "Les Miserables" star is letting her impressive set of pipes take her places as she's signed on to star (and sing in) "Song One," according to Daily Mail.
"Song One" will feature Hathaway as an archaeologist (why not?) who abandons her dig in Morocco and returns to the States after her brother is injured. Once home, she falls for her brother's favorite musician, to be played by singer-songwriter Johnny Flynn, who (in real life) fronts the folk band Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit.
Johnathan Rice and Jenny Lewis are writing songs for Flynn to perform, with one track being reserved for Hathaway. Lewis recently provided the soundtrack to "Very Good Girls," starring Elizabeth Olsen and Dakota Fanning, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival last month.

The 1996 film Foxfire was based on a novel by best-selling author Joyce Carol Oates. Though the film had no outright lesbian content, it was very much about the relationships between the young women, and their love for one another surpassed friendship, bringing them to a point of commitment secured by tattoos and general bad-assery. Bonded by their rebelling against a predatory teacher, they found one another to be a safe haven from the judgmental high school halls.
