Plot: Based on the children’s books by Bernard Waber, Lyle is the story of a crocodile who happens to know how to belt out a tune.
Review: Lyle Lyle Crocodile is a children’s book series written by author Bernard Weber. The story revolves around a family who find they have a crocodile living in the Victorian brownstone they just purchased. Starring Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, and Winslow Fegley, Lyle presents a new take on mixing animation with live action. And speaking of animated, you’ll also find Shawn Mendes as the musical voice behind Lyly the Crocodile. He doesn’t ever talk, but he can sure sing. And many of Mr. Mendes’s fanbase will likely be thrilled to hear his vocal talents on display. Co-directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, let’s see what all this croc action has in store.
This adaptation begins with showman Hector P.

Almost a year ago, I saw Buffaloed at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and was absolutely blown away. Not only is it a wonderfully smart and razor sharp satirical dramedy, it features the best turn to date by Zoey Deutch, who is quickly becoming among the most exciting actresses in the business. With the movie finally coming out this Friday, it’s a perfect excuse to unveil the first installment for 2020 of the Spotlight on the Stars series, since Deutch is well on her way to being one of the biggest in the industry. Mark my words, ladies and gentlemen, she’s shooting straight to the top of the A-list. The film itself is the year’s best title, without question. The synopsis, courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes, is as follows: “Peg Dahl (Zoey Deutch) has never run with the Buffalo pack. As a young girl obsessed with making enough cash to...

Elton John’s long victory lap — which has included an international farewell tour, an outrageously candid new memoir and a spangled biopic about his life — continued Thursday night under a cool night sky at the Greek Theater … eight miles and almost 50 years east of the Troubadour, where his pop reign began in 1970.
A screening of “Rocketman,” director Dexter Fletcher’s summer blockbuster starring Taron Egerton as Captain Fantastic, was accompanied by live orchestra and rock band. The Captain himself, joined by Egerton, capped it off with a brief performance.
Movies with live score accompaniment have become a dime a dozen. Some naturally lend themselves to the treatment — most John Williams scores were born for the concert stage — while others are more of a reach. Musicals, while presenting the additional high-wire act of syncing up with pre-recorded vocals, make as much sense as anything, and “Rocketman” is the most current film...

This biopic of the legend Elton John is very different. It is unconventionally and expertly mounted, giving an insight into the life of the performer.
Like Elton's life, the narrative begins on a dramatic note. An outrageously dressed Elton barges into a psychotherapy session where he admits to his addiction and is prodded to tell his story, so that he may get relief from his maladies after the cathartic experience.
The narrative, in a typical trajectory of rise-fall-rise is told via dreamlike, fantasy flashbacks where Elton's songs are used to comment on the action of the moment. It is thus a sort of a jukebox musical, told entirely in an ultra-flamboyant style, from John's perspective. It aims to be seen as what amounts to a brave self-portrait.
His memories take him back to his childhood, when as a child, born Reginald Dwight (played by Matthew Illesley), he felt like an awkward,...

Elton John is a legend. No one will argue that. Nor will anyone take issue with his colorful life being given the biopic treatment. The way Rocketman opts to tell this tale, however, that’s a whole other story. Opening this week, the John biopic does not soar like its title would suggest. Worse yet, it misuses and/or wastes much of the musician’s most famous songs. This is easily the most disappointing movie of the year so far. Oscar voters may ultimately be fooled later on in 2019 by a strong central turn and a fondness for the figure being portrayed, but I’m not. This is quite the misfire. The film is, as mentioned above, a biopic of Elton John (Taron Egerton as an adult), the chart topping musician, known as one of the biggest artists ever to grace the medium. Born Reginald Dwight, he was an awkward child,...

Welcome to the whimsical, sometimes tragic, wholly musical world of Sir Elton John.
On Wednesday, fans lined up at Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan’s Lincoln Center donning their “rock and roll” star-shaped sunglasses and colorful wigs to celebrate the U.S. premiere of Elton John’s musical biopic “Rocketman.” Before the film, actors and filmmakers gathered on the red carpet to chat about the film and its impact on audiences.
“[John] loves it,” Taron Egerton, who stars as the music icon in the film, told Variety. “He’s very passionate about it, and that’s obviously very validating for us. Although Elton [John] gave us all his blessing and knew exactly the story we were telling, he kind of left us to it. It’s also very risky because you don’t know how he’s going to respond. The overall feeling, I hope, is that it’s joyous and it...

As we finish of this awards season on Sunday night, the next wave of potential Oscar contenders are already beginning to tease themselves. One of the possible players even has a director who factored heavily into one of the current Best Picture nominees. It’s Rocketman, the hotly anticipated Elton John biopic. Dexter Fletcher is at the helm of this one, due in no small part for how he stepped in to help guide Bohemian Rhapsody to the finish line. This is a different looking film though, so it will probably have more of his mark on it. A brand new Trailer was dropped yesterday for the flick, which you’ll be able to see at the bottom of the post. Before that, as always, let us discuss the movie a bit, shall we? In 2016, Matthew Vaughn brought some of his friends together and created what some would call a stereotypical underdog film. The team that Vaughn and Marv Studios brought together on “Eddie the Eagle” included Dexter Fletcher, Taron Egerton, and Matthew Margeson. Now, you’ll be thrilled to find out that the same group of people are behind the newest Vaughn-produced biopic, “Rocketman.”
This time around, though, the subject isn’t a coke-bottle glasses wearing Olympic legend, but a legend in a different right.

The Newman scoring stage at 20th Century-Fox was overflowing with people – and good will – as Ascap last night celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Film Scoring Workshop with a studio recording session for the 12 lucky young composers chosen to participate.
“This is like a window into the time continuum, where you can look into the future and see those who are going to make a real contribution to film music,” Ascap president and chairman Paul Williams said. “It’s a cultural gift in one sense, but on another level it’s a really smart business investment.”
The performing-rights society sponsors this four-week event for emerging film and TV composers every summer, with Emmy winner Richard Bellis at the helm. Two major performance-rights organizations announced this week the launch of workshops designed to aid up-and-coming film and TV composers: Ascap, for film scoring; and Bmi, for conducting.
Both are multi-week events for which hundreds apply annually, and the two will culminate in live recording sessions at Los Angeles area studios later this month.
Ascap began its 30th annual Film Scoring Workshop today, with Emmy-winning composer Richard Bellis as mentor and Ascap film and TV executives Michael Todd and Jennifer Harmon producing.
It’s a comprehensive, four-week program that has proven a launching pad for many composers in the past, including Jim Dooley (“Pushing Daisies”), Rob Duncan (“Castle”), Matthew Margeson (the “Kingsman” movies), Cliff Martinez (“Drive”), Mateo Messina (“Juno”) and Austin Wintory (“Journey”).
This year’s 12 composers — chosen from nearly 400 applicants — include Shaun Crawford of Cape Town, South Africa; Damien Lane of Cambewarra, Australia; Kyle Laporte of Playa Del Rey, Calif.

Now, we have a sequel on our hands in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, with a First Trailer dropping this week to tease out what’s in store for us. It’s a fun looking Trailer that you’ll be able to see at the end of this piece. As always, however, there’s some discussion to be had before we get there. Good things to those who wait, right? Exactly. As such, let’s talk a bit about this blockbuster sequel and what it might have to offer this fall. The film is a follow up to Kingsman: The Secret Service. Taking place a period of time after that outing, the Kingsman have to save the day again, this time led by Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin...

I have to admit before I start this review that I’m not the biggest fan of the Ring franchise. I’ve seen them, I don’t hate them, but I can’t say I ever loved them. Rings didn’t change that. Unfortunately, what started as a chance to reinvigorate a franchise ended up making it look worse.
From the very outset, Rings feels more like a shoehorned idea rather than a major plot point. Whereas Samara seemed subtle before, she’s so omnipresent in this one that it feels artificial and strange.
The story of Rings is the story of Julia (Matilda Lutz), who travels across the country to find her boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe) after he goes missing. After running into his professor Gabriel (Johnny Galecki), she finds herself caught up in a large scandal and ultimately a part of the infamous curse. She sets out to...

In case you didn’t notice last week, a number of categories had their ranks thinned out by the Academy. Well, in that regard, I’m here to help. Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. Those will be listed in just a moment, but definitely study these lists, as there are Oscar hints to be found within. For now though, these are just the remaining titles fighting it out for nominations. Take a look and be sure to see how it all impacts predictions going forward. Below you will see the 145 films in Original Score that are still eligible, the 91 tunes in Original Song, and the nine in Foreign Language Feature that remain in play. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Varèse Sarabande will release the Eddie The Eagle – Original Score Album digitally on March 11 and on CD March 25, 2016.
The album features the delightful original music by Matthew Margeson. It’s a great score by the composer of Kick-ass 2 and Kingsman: The Secret Service (Interview)
“We wanted to create a period score for Eddie,” Margeson described. “The film is set in the ‘80s and the goal was to create a throwback ‘80s score. I knew it was going to be a fun task from the get-go and it was.”
Inspired by true events, Eddie The Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of...

Last week I said we’d be back at the Olympics, and indeed this week’s new release puts us back in the cheering section as another young man hopes to make his dreams of gold come true. While Race focused on American track legend, Jesse Owens, this time out we’re looking back on a British athlete, not from the Summer games but the Winter spectacle. Oh, and it’s during a less controversial era. Owens was pressured not to attend those 1936 games that were often used as a propaganda tool by Hitler. In 1988 no such pressures were brought to bear on this new film’s title hero. And while Owens also had to break past racial barriers, Michael Edwards (his birth name) faced a rigid class system and beurocrats determined to keep him out of competition. But in this “feel good” flick Michael’s determination earns him the nickname Eddie The Eagle.

Jurassic World is fine. Massive blockbuster earnings aside, it’s neither contrived enough to feel like another lesser sequel nor original enough to stray too far from Spielberg’s 1993 original. That uneasy cradle — between ingenuity and brand loyalty — is where tentpole franchises and their music have come to rest. With Furious 7, Atlantic Records threw dub step and electro-house music onto another collection of so-so promotional hip-hop. Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson only squeak out brief homages to John Barry rather than admit how indebted to Roger Moore Bond Kingsman: The Secret Service really is. Even Danny Elfman and Brian Tyler never stray far from Alan Silvestri’s original “Transformers meets Mission Impossible” theme in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Blockbuster movie composition is, like the studio system in 2015, sturdy, safe and kinda boring. Michael Giacchino’s score for Jurassic World is the latest to fit the mold. Like the movie itself,...

Kingsman: The Secret Service is the first great action film of 2015, a delightful riff on British spy movies that manages to bring a modern sensibility to its incredibly choreographed action set pieces. Thus, it was with great pleasure that I interviewed Matthew Margeson, who wrote the score for Kingsman along with co-composer Henry Jackman. The score is a […]

"Kingsman: The Secret Service" is a rousing new action film directed by Matthew Vaughn. It concerns the exploits of an order of British secret agents called the Kingsmen, who protect the world from all manner of evildoers. A Kingsman, code named Lancelot, has just died and the group must find a replacement for him. Colin Firth's character Harry Hart chooses a young street tough named Eggsy as his candidate for the job. Eggsy's dad was a Kingsman years ago and saved Hart's life, which Hart hopes to make up for by mentoring his son. There are quite a few other candidates as well, who all must go through a rigorous training process to see who might be worthy of the job. At the same time the selection process is going on, Firth's character investigates the kidnapping of a scientist, tracing the trail back to an internet mogul named Richmond Valentine.

If there’s one film you need to see this weekend, it’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. It’s funny, it’s fast-paced and it’s one insane, entertaining experience. Catch this one in the theater and with a crowd!
Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
Composers Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Matthew Margeson score the spy action adventure comedy. This is the second collaboration between Jackman and Margeson, who had worked previously on Kick Ass 2. The duo supplied the soundtrack for the star-studded Kingsman with Oscar winners Colin Firth and Michael Caine, Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson, and newcomer Taron Egerton.

Although Winter’s in its deadly frozen final gasps, down at the ole’ multiplex it’s “spy time”. Not pining for kinky billionaires? Well, then the fine folks at Fox films have an arresting alternative. It’s not the gritty undercover antics of Jason Bourne or Tinker, Tailor’s men, although a member of the latter group stars here. Nor is it quite as grim as the latest entries in 007’s long franchise. Oddly, you might say this is both light and dark Bond. Its sense of humor almost verges on satire and parody, but it is a dark, almost black sense of humor. After all, this new flick is rated R and goes out of its way to earn that letter, almost wearing it as a badge of honor. So, let’s leave reality and seriousness out in the parking lot. Suit up and join those dangerous dapper dudes...

Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson Providing Score For Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service
Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson score Kingsman: The Secret Service, from 20th Century Fox, a spy action adventure comedy directed by Matthew Vaughn, which debuts in theaters February 13, 2015.
This is the second collaboration between Jackman and Margeson, who had worked previously on Jeff Wadlow’s Kick Ass 2.
The duo have taken on the star-studded Kingsman with Oscar winners Colin Firth and Michael Caine, Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson, and newcomer Taron Egerton. Based on a comic book by Mark Millar, the story follows a veteran secret agent (Firth) who takes a young protégé (Egerton) under his wing.
The score album will be released on La La Land Records, February 17, 2015.
Jackman and Margeson’s score for Kingsman delivers nail biting action sequences while emphasizing the heart of the film which lie in the relationship between Firth and Egerton. The deep brass notes exemplify the grandeur of the secret society and the...

The fifth and, yes, best film from director Matthew Vaughn (“Layer Cake,” “X-Men: First Class”), “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is a startlingly enjoyable and well-made action film leavened by humor and slicked along by style, made by, for, and about people who’ve seen far too many Bond films.
Fleet-footed and unrepentantly British, it’s a reunion of sorts behind the scenes for Vaughn and comics writer Mark Millar, but it’s infinitely better than their 2010 collaboration “Kick-Ass.” Credit for that goes to Vaughn’s adaptation of the script alongside producer Jane Goldman, which finds cheer and cleverness in Millar...
