Snowpiercer is coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on October 21st, and if there is one movie to make sure is on your home video release radar, this is it. You’ve probably heard quite a bit about this one, and it’s one of the oddest and, if the critical consensus can be believed, most awesome sci-fi releases in quite a while.
Odd, because it pushes the limits of indie films, and their theatrical releases and marketing efforts. Though you’ve likely heard of the film, it wouldn’t have taken that much effort to avoid doing so, and you may not have even had much opportunity to catch it in theaters. Even with the recent upswing in recognizable names in films that are indie, indie-eque, microbudget, or whatever else, a tense sci-fi effort with Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Ed Harris, and more still seems like it ought...

In addition to still-life model at MoMA and dance leader at Ebertfest, Tilda Swinton has now added “Redditeer” to her resume. She was on hand Monday for an Ama to promote Snowpiercer and put on her signature arty charm, earning a few nicknames (T-Swinny), declaring her love of Alt-j and revealing she’s actually a clone of David Bowie in the process. Here’s a few of some her best answers:
Have you ever considered changing your name (or at least how it appears in print) to the tilde symbol “~” a la Prince?

The Grand Budapest Hotel and Only Lovers Left Alive both seem like they must have been very fun movies to work on, was that the case?...

Period drama “The Face Reader” emerged as one of the biggest and most critically acclaimed Korean films of the year, pulling in more than 9 million admissions and winning a slew of accolades at the 50th Daejong Film Awards. The film was directed by Han Jae Rim and re-teams him with popular actor Song Kang Ho, who he worked with previously on gangster effort “The Show Must Go On”, along with a remarkable supporting cast of heavy-hitters that includes Lee Jung Jae (“The Thieves”), Kim Hye Su (“Tazza: The High Rollers”), Baek Yoon Shik (“The Taste of Money”), and the up and coming Lee Jong Suk (“No Breathing”) and Jo Jung Suk (“Architecture 101”). The film takes place in the 1450s during the Joseon dynasty, with Song Kang Ho as Nae Kyung, once the country’s most talented face reader, the practice of physiognomy, whereby the face of a person is studied...

First things first, apologies for the delay with the latest iteration of this article detailing the best of the Korean New Wave. Let’s get back into this Korean article. In which we look at the Korean new wave, from the nastier and more misogynistic movies from Korea’s provocative director Kim Ki-Duk to musicals, Korean musicals are something of a unreal proposition. Now without any further preamble or distractions, here is part two of the look into the work of Joon Ho-Bong.
The Host
Directed by Joon-ho Bong
Written by Joon-Ho Bong, Jun-Won Hah and Chul-Hyun Baek
2006, South Korea
The Monster Movie was a huge icon of the 1950s and 1960s, now not so much. Most movies of this distinction have been distilled into pure horror films, more interested in the violence and the gore in the man vs. nature situation than anything subversive that the lost genre was renowned for.

Despite its title and killer canine premise, “Howling” isn’t a werewolf horror, but a crime mystery based upon the award winning novel “Kogoeru Kiba” (“Fang Freezing”) by Japanese author Nonami Asa. The film is the latest offering from Korean poet turned director Yoo Ha, known for high quality character driven dramas such as “A Frozen Flower” and “A Dirty Carnival”, and features the stellar lead pairing of Song Kang Ho (“The Host”) and popular television actress Lee Na Young (“The Fugitive: Plan B”), with support from Shin Jung Keun (“Battlefield Heroes”), Lee Sung Min (“Troubleshooter”), Nam Bo Ra (“Sunny”) and Lee Min Ho (“Rooftop Prince”). The film starts off following Song Kang Ho as down on his luck, promotion chasing detective Sang Gil, who is reluctantly partnered with rookie female officer Eun Young (Lee Na Young) in what looks initially like a straightforward suicide. It soon becomes clear that...

Some projects take months, even years, to find their cast (we're looking at you, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) while others leave the gate like a speeding bullet. Such is the case with Snow Piercer as yet another actor has jumped on board.
According to Variety, Ewen Bremner (pictured right; Jack the Giant Killer) has joined the cast of the sci-fi thriller Snow Piercer, which already includes the previously announced Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Kang Ho Song, and Octavia Spencer.
Bong Joon-ho is helming from a script he penned with Park Chan-wook producing. Park is producing through Moho Films. Production is expected to start in March, though no distributor is yet in place.
The French graphic novel follows a group of people on a train without a final destination, struggling to survive after the end of the world brings on a cataclysmic ice age.

“Hindsight” attracted a great deal of hype in Korea, marking the return of “Il Mare” director Lee Hyun Seung after an absence of over a decade. The film also whipped up interest thanks to its casting of one of the country’s most popular and acclaimed stars, Song Kang Ho (“The Host”, “Thirst”) as the male lead, opposite up and coming young actress Shin Se Kyung (“Acoustic”), with an accomplished supporting cast that includes another promising starlet in Esom (“Second Half”), veteran performer Yoon Yeo Jung (who recently impressed with a deadpan turn in “The Housemaid”), Chun Jung Myung (“ Hansel & Gretel”), Lee Jong Hyuk (“Parallel Life”), Kim Min Joon (“No Mercy for the Rude”) and Oh Dal Soo (“Detective K”). With its potentially odd central paring being woven into a tale of gangsters, revenge and uneasy romance, expectations were set high, though the offbeat film surprisingly met with mixed reactions from critics and local audiences.

This is great news! It’s always awesome to have cast members from critically acclaimed films join the ranks of our favorite genre, partly because we know they will perform admirably in their roles, and their appearances tend to lend a bit more of the recognition that Sci-Fi always deserves, but usually doesn’t get.

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho‘s English-language debut was always going to be a hotly anticipated feature, but as the cast for Snow Piercer rounds out, it’s become obvious that The Host director is really going all out for this one. The next star to join the sci-fi indie film is Octavia Spencer, who just won a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress and is viewed as the frontrunner for the Oscar in the same category for her work in The Help. She joins an already impressive (both in terms of talent and how wonderfully varied it is) cast that includes Chris Evans, The Host star Kang Ho Song, and veteran talents John Hurt and Tilda Swinton.
