Filming is coming up for the second feature-length fiction film by the Belgian director, which will bring together Jérémie Renier, Suzanne Clément and Jean-Luc Bideau. Shooting will begin on 7 September for La Vie dans les bois, the second feature film from Belgian director François Pirot. His first feature, Mobile Home, from 2012, centred on two 30-somethings in crisis struggling to find their place in society. Almost ten years later, the director returns with La Vie dans les bois, which focuses this time on a man grappling with his forties. As both his family and his work prove particularly demanding, Mathieu, without warning, goes deep into the woods, seemingly never to return. Faced with this radical liberation and the absence that comes with it, his baffled relatives will have to face themselves and their own choices. Between these two films, François Pirot directed a powerful feature-length documentary, Eurovillage, and pursued...
Cannes–The Pop Up Film Residency, a mentorship program launched this year by former TorinoFilmLab artistic director Matthieu Darras and Slovak producer Juraj Krasnohorsky, has announced three new residents, four new hosts, and two new creative partners for 2019.
Based in Bratislava, the program offers a three-week residency in Slovakia each month, along with a series of international residencies throughout the year with a growing network of partners, including Cannes Critics’ Week, Eave and the Doha Film Institute.
“The big difference between this residency and other support schemes for talents is that it’s really tailor-made,” said Darras. “Once we really get an understanding of the person, the project, we actually find the good residency.”
A former Cannes Critics’ Week programmer, Darras described the Pop Up Film Residency as a “passion project” designed to offer mentorship on an intimate scale. “I have 20 years of experience running labs, where I usually have programs with 20, 25 projects,...

Belgian film house Eklektik Productions is teaming with Italy’s Alba Produzioni and Argentina’s Aramos Cine to co-produce Stefano Pasetto’s feature drama project “El velo” (The Veil).
“The Veil” was presented at September’s San Sebastian Co-Production Forum and then chosen for pitching at the upcoming Proyecta showcase, a new joint initiative launched by Argentine film-tv market Ventana Sur and the San Sebastian Festival, aimed to foster co-productions with and within Latin America.
Set up at Eklektik, “The Veil” has already been granted development subsidies from Europe’s Media Program and Belgium’s Federation of Wallonie Bruxelles, who’s also supporting the project’s production.
“We will be at a financing stage until next summer; the plan is to start shooting in the fall in Buenos Aires, Uruguay, Italy and Belgium locations,” said Eklektik head of production Tatjana Kozar.

The 20th edition of the French Film Festival revved into action last night in Edinburgh's Filmhouse with a screening of charming and poignant comedy Mobile Home - and the Belgian co-production is a testimony to how far the event has come, with French language films from Switzerland and Canada also making an appearance this year.
The screening was attended by not one star but three, with director François Pirot and actors Guillaume Gouix and Arthur Dupont all on hand to talk about the story of two friends whose plans to leave home and see the world don't quite turn out as they expect. The trio proved an entertaining bunch, with plenty of Gallic charm.
Apologising for his lack of English, Gouix said: "When you speak three languages, you are trilingual. When you speak two languages, you're bilingual and when you speak one language... you're French."

While Cannes’ Quinzaine struggles to reframe its identity, its former artistic director Olivier Père continues to impress in his new job at the Locarno Film Festival. On Wednesday, he and his programming team unveiled a lineup that is absolutely salivatory, a who’s who for high-minded cinephiles. Perhaps most impressive of all, he has managed to once again nudge the festival’s selection aesthetic even deeper into esoteric ‘experimental’ territory without seeming all that radical. More than any other festival, Locarno is the home for the edgy projects that are too sophisticated for Cannes, whose cold shoulder to avant-garde narrative filmmaking becomes more glaring with each passing year. Check out the complete line-up at the bottom of this page.
