Last Year’s Winner: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: “The Daily Show” or a show run by one of its former correspondents has won this category 14 years running.
Fun Fact: …but “The Daily Show” itself, despite a record 10 wins in the variety category, wasn’t nominated in 2016.
The Emmys are more competitive than ever, and the Variety Talk category is no exception. Last year’s winner, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” should feel secure in its odds for a nomination after another strong year, but few others can rest easy.
Of last year’s other nominees, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” are all in similar boats: They all have a solid history with the Academy and remain strong in the ratings. “The Late, Late Show with James Corden” has only grown in popularity since breaking in last year,...

The Vampire Diaries has been phenomenal lately. Editors here are extremely gaga over the series and its one of those shows where audiences don't actually fade away just because the lead actors are dating in real life. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are actually really adorable together and today's holiday was just one example.
The two dressed up for Halloween this past Saturday night and it looks like Ian went as Captain Planet and Nina as Harry Potter's Hermoine Granger. Seriously, she actually cut out those Harry Potter and Ron Weasley heads to rest on her shoulders. According to Just Jared, the couple both attended Ian's Empoweresque Foundation at The Opera in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ian also took to his Twitter page this morning wishing everyone a Happy Halloween while explaining that it was this holiday specifically that helped him notice why he wanted to pursue acting.
He tweeted:
iansomerhalder ian somerhalder Happy Halloween!

This is The week to invest in a PS3 just so you can buy and download the fantastic Dead Nation exclusively on the Playstation Network. Trust us - it will be worth your while.

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's...

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued invitations to 134 members of the film community to join the group. There were a maximum of 166 open slots to fill this year, but the various branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the most recent Oscar show, has been invited to join. So have Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, James Franco and Michelle Williams. The list even includes a number of comic performers like Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.
Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.
