Oppenheimer took home the most golden statues — including director Christopher Nolan’s very first Academy Award — at the 2024 Oscars, which was hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.
Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic led the pack with 13 nominations and ultimately won best picture, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson). It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. Killers of the Flower Moon earned 10 noms but left the show empty-handed, while Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars and won best original song for “I’m Just Ken.”
The 96th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 10 at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Those who missed the live telecast can stream the ceremony on demand on Hulu.

Greta Gerwig tells me there’s “no resistance” from her about the possibility of Barbie 2.
The challenge for her she says, is how to tackle a follow-up movie. Initially, the filmmaker wasn’t “feeling” the idea of a sequel, but now she’s warm to such a situation. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” she says, but there’s a heck of a lot to discuss first with Mattel, Margot Robbie, Warner Bros Discovery, producer David Heyman and all of her creative collaborators.

Also, there’s rather a lot on her plate as she puts the architecture in place to shoot Narnia for Netflix, and Gerwig revealed that she’ll return to London to soon resume the very early stages of pre-production in the UK.

It was a good night out for UK and Ireland talent at the 2024 Academy Awards.
UK-born Nolan’s Oppenheimer sweep is a victory of sorts for the UK, although the film is a US production, produced by the UK’s Emma Thomas. Should any Americans be concerned following the Academy Awards ceremony, no, they haven’t missed Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day in the U.S. is still May 12, a good two months away. In the U.K., however, it was the night of the Oscars, March 10 — and given the number of Brits that took to the stage to give acceptance speeches and thank their mothers, it’s understandable if many viewers stateside got confused (and a little panicked).
Regardless, for a period of time on Sunday night, it looked like the Oscars were going to be a solely U.K. affair.
Back-to-back craft wins for “Poor Things” saw a steady procession of Brits take to the stage at the Dolby Theater, including Holly Waddington (best costume design), Nadia Stacey, Mark Couler and Josh Weston (best makeup and hairstyling) and James Price and Shona Heath.
Then there was one of the night’s biggest below-the-line shocks,...

It was a good night for the UK at the 96th Oscars. Brits won in seven separate categories at the Dolby Theatre, with Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Glazer’s wins the highest profile.
Nolan scooped Best Director and Best Picture, the latter alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, for the night’s standout winner, Oppenheimer. Universal’s film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project took home seven statuettes, having been widely tipped for glory after a stellar awards season and handed Nolan his first Best Director win.
After thanking his wife and production partner, Emma Thomas, and others such as brother and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan, Nolan added a sprinkle of hope to the sauce in a message to the Academy.

Oscars 2024: Oppenheimer & Poor Things ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
We are finally done with the Oscars 2024! Christopher Nolan won his first Academy Award for Oppenheimer, and Emma Things won her second Best Actress Award for Poor Things. Jimmy Kimmel made jokes; some landed, and some didn’t. Ryan Gosling performed on ‘I’m Just Ken’ with a pink twist! But who won the most awards? Well, we have made a note of everything.
If you think, just like the theatres, the competition for awards happened between Barbie and Oppenheimer, you are wrong. The Christopher Nolan directorial competed fiercely with Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. So, who emerged victorious in the race for the most awards at the Academy this year?

The Yorgos Lanthimos’ directorial stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalp, Margaret Qualley, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbot and Kathryn Hunter.

The team behind Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe’s makeup and hair in Poor Things won Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2024 Oscars.
Emma Stone in a still from Poor Things
Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston won the award on Sunday night instead of the team who did Bradley Cooper’s makeup for Maestro.
The 49-year-old’s film was expected to win, but perhaps the online controversy surrounding his use of a fake nose to portray Leonard Bernstein prevented it.
Jimmy Kimmel took aim at the A-list crowd at the 96th Academy Awards, so he took this opportunity to throw some shade at Cooper’s Oscar snub, too.

Oppenheimer dominated the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 10), winning seven Oscars, including best picture, after going into the ceremony with 13 nominations.
The epic biographical drama from British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, already winner of the Bafta and Producers Guild of America best film awards as well as the Golden Globe for drama feature, also brought Nolan (himself winner of the Bafta and Directors Guild of America directing awards) his first directing Oscar.
Oppenheimer delivered other statuettes to Nolan’s producing partners Emma Thomas and Charles Roven, Ireland’s Cillian Murphy as lead actor and Robert Downey Jr as supporting actor.

Updated with Emma Stone win: Poor Things wrapped up its night at the Oscars with a lead actress win for Emma Stone, along with earlier nods for Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling and Costume Design. See the acceptance speeches above and below.
A clearly emotional Stone thanked director Yorgos Lanthimos for the “gift of a lifetime” for her role as Bella Baxter. This was Stone’s second Oscar win out of four nominations. She also served as a producer on the film.
In her acceptance speech, Stone said “It’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts and that is the best part about making movies.”

The Oscars have arrived! The 96th Academy Awards honoring the best film achievements of 2023 were the culmination of an eventful year that brought a wide range of cinematic experiences, from the blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenomenon to the chilling art house drama “The Zone of Interest.” So what did it all mean when the envelopes opened and the trophies were handed out on March 10? Scroll down for our live blog where I break down who won, who lost, who upset, and how it all fit into the story of this awards season.

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

Akin to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein tale, Poor Things tells an unbelievable story about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

“Oppenheimer” won big at the BAFTA Awards, taking home seven gongs including Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. But Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things” was close behind with a total tally of five victories.
The Yorgos Lanthimos movie won Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Production Design for Zsuzsa Mihalek (who wasn’t present), Shona Heath, and James Price, Best Costume Design for Holly Waddington, Best Makeup and Hair for Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston, and Best Visual Effects for Simon Hughes.
The first of the below winners to speak to the press was Hughes, who discussed his role in creating the world of “Poor Things.” “That’s where you have to acknowledge Shona Heath and James Price, the two production designers on the film because it’s their vision. The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.
The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Let’s take a closer look at this trifecta of categories and examine the last 20 ceremonies to break down how often these awards overlap.
As you can see, in the past two decades, there have been 11 instances where a film has won at least two of these three design categories.
Eight films have won both Costume Design and Production Design: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, “The Aviator” in 2005, “Memoirs of a Geisha...

HBO has released an incredibly cool new behind-the-scenes featurette for the final season of Game of Thrones. The video puts the focus on the impressively awesome makeup effects that are created for the certain characters in the series to life like the White Walkers. It specifically focuses on the prosthetics process.
Prosthetics Designer Barrie Gower dives into the process and explains that most people are unaware of the length of time and the process that goes into creating, building, and applying these prosthetics.
They have a workshop that consists of around 50 people that are working on this aspect of the series, and it’s explained that after they are done applying the makeup, they have to stick around on set to make sure it stays on the actors!

The second Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly appear onscreen in “Stan & Ollie,” there is no question that they are the legendary Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, respectively. The physical transformations masterminded by prosthetic makeup designer Mark Coulier and makeup and hair designer Jeremy Woodhead are that remarkable, enabling the actors to fully inhabit their roles.
Surprisingly, Coulier and Woodhead were not recognized with Oscar nominations for their standout work on the film, which explores the latter years of the comedy duo’s career, though they did nab two nominations from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild’s sixth annual awards —one for period and/or character make-up and another for special make-up effects.
