As scary as a cabin in the woods can be, one of the most disturbing backdrops for a film can be the college campus culture, where horrors all too real take place all too often. Such is the case in Natalie Leite’s M.F.A., which made its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival (read Heather's review here) and is coming to Blu-ray and DVD soon following its October theatrical release:

The anticipation for “It” has been building tremendously ever since the debut teaser broke records and became the most watched trailer in its first 24 hours. The Andy Muschietti adaptation of the Stephen King novel finally opens nationwide this Friday, and the first wave of reviews have debuted and, unfortunately, they aren’t exactly glowing.
Every critic seems to agree “It” is a satisfying adaptation, especially since adapting half of King’s 1,138 page book is no easy feat, but critics can’t help but feel the movie drops the ball when it comes to being an effective horror film.
The movie has plenty of scares, but they’re nearly all jump scares regulated to individual set pieces. As a result, the film just doesn’t add up. As IndieWire’s Eric Kohn says in his B- review, “‘It’ simplifies its appeal with jump scares…For much of King’s novel, Pennywise...

Based on the best-selling novel by Lissa Evans, the delightful and heartwarming period piece, Their Finest, arrives on Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD) and DVD on July 11 from Lionsgate; Digital HD on June 30 and On Demand on July 11 from EuropaCorp. From the producers of Brooklyn and Carol, Their Finest takes place in Britain during World War II and tells the story of a film crew as they create a movie to boost the country’s morale after the Blitz. Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin and Golden Globe winner Bill Nighy (2007, Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, Gideon’s Daughter) lead an all-star cast in what Andrew Barker at Variety considers “a relentlessly charming romantic comedy.” Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education, One Day), the Their Finest Blu-ray and DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $24.99 and $19.98, respectively.
1940, London, the Blitz. With England’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, works under fire with a makeshift cast and crew to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits, and inspire America to join the war. Catrin and a fellow writer, Buckley (Sam Claflin), reluctantly joins forces with fading matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy) on a movie to warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American public.

Gemma Arterton Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe needed a win. Yes, each of their films has managed to be a success on a financial level — make no mistake there. However, over the course of their three films, credibility of the world itself seemed to be on the decline. Man of Steel was polarizing enough by itself, but Batman v Superman was overwhelmingly criticized by critics and fans alike. Despite solid advertising, Suicide Squad fared even worse. While I’d argue that each of these films had very redeemable traits (I love Man of Steel, liked Batman v Superman, loved the Ultimate Edition, and enjoyed Suicide Squad in spite of its glaring flaws), there was still no denying that some were growing tired of waiting for the universe to live up to expectations.
This put Wonder Woman in an unenviable position. With it being the final film leading up to Justice League, it needed to be well received.

Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut “American Pastoral,” an adaptation of Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-wining 1997 novel, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday to mostly negative reviews. The film follows Seymour “Swede” Levov (played by McGregor), a former high school athlete and successful businessman whose family falls apart amidst the turmoil of the 1960s. Critics have described the film as yet another ill-advised Roth adaptation and more proof that the writer’s work doesn’t translate well to the screen, save for James Schamus’ “Indignation” released earlier this year.

IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich describes “American Pastoral” as a “disaster,” calling McGregor’s direction “competent but uncreative,” and his fidelity to Roth’s text “asphyxiating:”

Emilia Clarke ventures beyond Westeros for another silver-screen venture in "Me Before You," but Khaleesi's latest film isn't garnering much more favorable reviews than last summer's "Terminator: Genisys." The first round of reactions could be generously described as mixed, with most critics not taking especially well to Thea Sharrock's tearjerker. Read More: 'Me Before You' Criticized by Advocates Over Portrayal of a Disabled Character "Imagine 'The Intouchables' with more romance and less chemistry, crossbred with a far tamer version of 'Pretty Woman' so lacking in eroticism that its PG-13 rating seems unduly harsh," begins Variety's Andrew Barker, "and you’re halfway toward picturing Thea Sharrock’s 'Me Before You.'" He goes on to call the film a "melodrama with soft-rock ballads where its beating heart should be." Sheri Linden is similarly unimpressed, writing in The Hollywood Reporter that "far too much of...

The first reviews for Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" are in and with forty reviews counted, the film is sitting at 39% and a 5.3/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Over on Metacritic, 17 reviews are in with a 48/100. The scale and spectacle has been applauded, and everyone seems to like Wonder Woman, but the script has been an issue and there's difference of opinion over Batman and Luthor. Here's a few examples:
"As a pure visual spectacle, however, Batman v Superman ably blows the hinges off the multiplex doors, and editor David Brenner does excellent work to comprehensibly streamline the chaos, capably captured by d.p. Larry Fong...." Andrew Barker, Variety
"The villain here, Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, is so intensely annoying that, very early on, you wish Batman and Superman would just patch up their differences and join forces to put the squirrelly rascal out of his, and our,...

Paramount Pictures has released a second trailer for director Adam McKay’s The Big Short.
The film stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong and Marisa Tomei.

Andrew Barker says, “Despite sturdy, energetic performances from all the actors mentioned above, only Carell’s Baum manages to register as a genuine, empathetic character; not coincidentally, he’s also the only one to express believable compunctions about getting rich off a looming fiscal catastrophe.”

You might as well call Joe Wright's latest fantastical swashbuckling effort, a whitewashed re-imagining of Peter Pan's humble origins, "Panned." The early reviews are in for Wright and writer Jason Fuchs' one-size-fits-all J.M. Barrie adaptation, and the words are as unkind as Hugh Jackman's wig line. "Pan" co-stars Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara and Levi Miller. The film opens nationwide Oct. 9. Read the first reviews below: Andrew Barker, Variety "Positioned as a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan stories, 'Pan' swaps puckish mischief and innocence for doses of Steampunk design, anachronistic music, a stock 'chosen one' narrative and themes of child labor, warfare and unsustainable mineral mining. Worldwide box office will likely be strong, especially overseas, but the bubble for these joyless fairy-tale revisions cannot pop quickly enough." Variety's Andrew Barker writes that the movie delivers on its promise of "complete CGI destruction of California" and Johnson's "jackfruit-sized biceps" but along the lines it becomes too repetitive and suffers from "spectacle overkill." "...(you know what's cooler than...

Justin Lowe from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 70 grade. He said: "While Hooper favored shock value and jump scares, Kenan and cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe construct far more fluid sequences as the camera glides and hovers over its subjects, reserving the most impactful shots for the climactic scenes, particularly a concluding sequence that’s particularly thrilling." Clark Collis over at Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 67 grade, stating:...

With Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara at the helm of a comedy, you would think you were in for a good time. But critics seem to be split on whether or not you should join these two stars on their wild ride. The Oscar winner proved her comedy chops in Legally Blonde while Vergara continues to make viewers laugh weekly in Modern Family. Together, however, it might just not be enough. Here is what the reviews have to say about Hot Pursuit: Variety's Andrew Barker said that the only way this film will thrive at the box office is if it relies on its star power. "It's a shame, because Witherspoon remains one of the more underrated comedic talents of her generation (Elle Woods and Tracy Flick would both...

I didn't have enough free time in 2014 to review nearly as many of last year's prolific output of fine jazz albums as I wanted to. Here's a small step toward catching up, plus two 2015 releases (Ligeti/McDonas, The Side Project Saxophone 4tet).
Tom Varner: Nine Surprises (Tom Varner Music)
Composer and French horn player Tom Varner is indeed full of surprises, and they are not confined to the suite of that name (which, surprisingly, has 15 movements). I was most surprised by the outburst of New Orleans jazz in the last piece on the CD, "Mele," which Varner calls "a Gil Evans-influenced variation on the harmonic structure of a pop Hawaiian Christmas song." In general the music here seems highly composed -- these are not heads with strings of solos -- but still allowing for improvisation. The soloists who make the biggest impression are trombonist David Marriott and, no surprise here,...

Perhaps the people who run studios thought Divergent was the big Ya novel to launch Shailene Woodley into the stratosphere, but her performance in the cancer weepie The Fault in Our Stars might be the role that makes her a giant star.
Based on John Green’s 2012 best-seller, director Josh Boone’s movie tells the story of a cynical 16-year-old cancer patient (Woodley), saddled with an oxygen tank and breathing tube, and the more-dynamic, free-spirited remission patient (Ansel Elgort) who falls in love with her. “A generation of teens like [Woodley's character] have been weaned on Ya novels, leading to more discerning palates,...

In nearly 80 years of delicious Disney animated villains threatening princesses, nobody’s ever been as truly frightening as Maleficent, the horn-headed sorceress who could transform into a dragon and cursed baby Aurora in 1959′s Sleeping Beauty. But much as Wicked did for the evil witch of The Wizard of Oz, Maleficent digs deeper into the backstory of the sharp-cheeked villainess, with Angelina Jolie bringing her to vivid life.
Of course, such revisionist fairy tales have become increasingly common. As EW’s Keith Staskiewicz notes in his review, “The first line of Maleficent [''Let us tell an old story anew and see how well you know it"] could be emblazoned on a sticker and slapped onto the back-bumper of Hollywood,...

Angelina Jolie’s take on a classic Disney villain, Maleficent, opens on Friday, May 30, and has received decidedly mediocre reviews from critics; Jolie’s performance, on the other hand, has received rave reviews.
Maleficent Gets Mediocre Reviews
Maleficent was originally described as a retelling of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, this time from the villain’s point of view. The problem with this retelling, most reviewers agree, is that the film was made to have a PG rating, allowing it only to scratch the surface of its complex titular character.
“Here, Maleficent’s sympathetic side feels tacked-on. No doubt the filmmakers figured fans of Beauty and the Beast and Wicked would be enthralled by a conflicted character. But Maleficent’s back story and psyche are more vague and less developed than those of the Beast or Wicked’s Elphaba,” wrote USA Today’s Claudia Puig.

If you're anything like us, you're going to see Maleficent this weekend because you want to see a horned, frightening, yet still freakishly beautiful Angelina Jolie casting evil on a sweet, innocent blonde. And while the critics seem to unanimously agree that Jolie is fantastic playing the villain, there is some doubt amongst them as to why the plot layout and special effects don't seem quite up to par with her acting skills. Variety's Andrew Barker, for example, took issue with the pace of the film, saying it would have "actually benefit[ted] from some slow-paced indulgence." And while while he found some of the bonding scenes between Maleficent and Elle Fanning's Princess Aurora...

The template seems simple enough: adapt a best-selling dystopian Ya book with a dynamic female heroine, sit back, and start counting the moolah. Now we know why Us distributor Lionsgate chose not to screen I, Frankenstein for the critics in advance of its Us debut last Friday, and why the release was postponed from February 2013. The Melbourne-shot 3D action-thriller, written and directed by Stuart Beattie, has been shunned by Us audiences and excoriated by reviewers. The film starring Aaron Eckhart as Frankenstein.s reincarnated corpse who battles gargoyles and demons in 21st Century London, opened with $8.6 million at 2,753 screens, far lower than most pundits. predictions. It ranked sixth behind the second weekend of buddy cop comedy Ride Along, the fifth frame of war drama Lone Survivor,. animated films The Nut Job (week 2) and Frozen (week 10), and the second weekend of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The reviews were near unanimous, with just two "fresh" and 41 rotten on Rotten Tomatoes, for a pitifully low score of 5%. Based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, creator of Underworld,...

"I, Fraknenstein" is a supernatural action flick that should appeal to teens. It stars Aaron Eckhart as Dr. Frankenstein's rather hunky creation (this is no flat-topped, green monster) -- who gets his revenge on his master and then roams the Earth for 200 years. As a soulless being, he has managed to attract the attention of two sets of immortals: the Gargoyle Order (a group of angel-descended warriors who protect mankind from demons) led by gargoyle queen Leonore (Miranda Otto) and the demons, led my demonic prince Naberius (Bill Nighy). Like "The Legend of Hercules 3D," the movie seems set up for sequels, but given that it's a January release, that seems unlikely.
There's no question that this is a horror movie, but if you're considering letting your tween/teen see "I, Frankenstein," keep reading.
1. What does your kid know about Frankenstein? You don't really need to know anything about...

With the holidays right around the corner, it's no surprise there are plenty of rom-coms to ring in the new year — a major one being the heavily celebrity-saturated, New Year's Eve. With big names such as Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Zac Efron, Sarah Jessica Parker and Josh Duhamel (just to name a few), what's not to like? Apparently, a lot.

By this point, if anyone is still doubting whether "The Hangover Part II" will be a massive worldwide hit, Wednesday's midnight screenings should quiet skeptics. Warner Bros. announced that the follow-up to 2009's record-smashing hit roped in $10.4 million in those early showings, setting a new midnight opening record for an R-rated film on its way to what many are predicting will become a $125 million opening over the five-day holiday weekend.
All this box-office talk gets even more impressive when you note reviews for the film have been decidedly mixed. While the first "Hangover" won over both critics and moviegoers, the sequel is currently languishing at just a 31 percent approval at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator.
