Get ready to revisit the New York indie music scene circa 2008, because the soundtrack for Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is receiving its first-ever vinyl reissue. Celebrating the movie’s 15th anniversary, it will be out on April 7th via Real Gone Music.
Pressed on yellow vinyl to match the color of Michael Cera’s Yugo in the film, the 2xLP release will be housed in a “scrapbook” gatefold jacket featuring production stills from Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Pre-orders are ongoing.
In case you forgot, the soundtrack is stacked with songs from indie mainstays like Vampire Weekend, Devendra Banhart, We Are Scientists, Band of Horses, and Richard Hawley, as well as Big Star’s Chris Bell and Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo.
Directed by Peter Sollett from a screenplay by Lorene Scafaria, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist starred Cera as Nick and Kat Dennings as Norah, who meet at the...

Jussie Smollett needs to know he still has throngs of backers -- who will remain by his side -- If he would just admit the crimes he's committed ... at least according to his friend, Bishop O.C. Allen. We got the influential Bishop -- who once served on President Obama's Advisory Council -- out in Atlanta and wanted to see if he had a message for the embattled "Empire" star. While it’s not a topic that’s foreign to the silver screen (see any John Hughes movie or Larry Clark’s Bully or Jacob Aaron Estes’ Mean Creek), bullying is a subject that has been generally glossed over, never examined that thoroughly.
Cue Lee Hirsch‘s documentary Bully, a simple, precise and affecting film concerning the effects of The Bully, that infamous villain that we’ve all played or encountered, be it in big ways or small, at some point in our adolescence. The subjects examined in Hirsch’s film are the most extreme victims of this trend; young kids, ranging from 11 to 17-years old, and the physical and psychological turmoil mostly nameless bullies put them through day in and day out.
Alex, the relative anchor of the film, is a young 12-year old in a Sioux City, Iowa middle school who faces constant ridicule from a group of...

The Silent League's amorphous nature and malleable identity makes a record of covers and remixes by collaborators and admirers entirely fitting. Formed in Brooklyn in 2004 by then Mercury Rev keyboardist, Justin Russo, the band has included members of Arcade Fire, Beirut, Stars Like Fleas, and Bishop Allen among others.
Their latest release, "We Go Forward" is largely inspired by remixes from their 3rd album, "But You've Always Been The Caretaker" featuring newly remixed efforts of friends and allies like Neon Indian and Memory Tapes. There's also a couple covers -- The Chameleons' 80's classic, "Tears" and a superior variety of Broken Social Scene's "Texico Bitches."

The No Strings Attached soundtrack. Ivan Reitman is a variable director at best. The good will he generated with Ghostbusters is pretty much eternal (and tellingly he’s set to revisit the series with Ghostbusters 3), but he’s also single-handedly responsible for Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s “funny period”, having directed Twins, Kindergarten Cop and Junior. He obviously knew better than to get involved with Jingle All The Way, but that hardly expunges him, especially when you throw in a whole load of other damp squibs including Six Days And Seven Nights, Evolution and My Super Ex-Girlfriend. It’s particularly disappointing then to find him responsible for relegating Natalie Portman from Aronofsky’s dark impresario to Ashton Kutcher co-star. It’s hard being a woman in Hollywood, at least it is if you’re talented. You take the lousy generic rom-com leads opposite the Kutchers and Butlers of the world or...

No Strings Attached
Directed by: Ivan Reitman
Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline, Ludacris, Greta Gerwig
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 21, 2011
Plot: A young man (Kutcher) and woman (Portman) struggle to keep their relationship strictly sexual with no romantic complications. Supposedly, hilarity ensues.
Who’S It For? I wanna say romantic comedy fans, but this isn’t even for all rom-com lovers. This wreaks of the male-oriented romantic comedy, which features a few shots of T & A to satiate the appetites of the over-sexed and the women that they wish existed.
Expectations: Ashton Kutcher’s involved? Yeah, my expectations were not high. Natalie Portman is almost insufferably cute so I thought I’d be able to tough it out for her. Nick Allen suggested the Academy may strip Portman of her Oscar for Black Swan after this one, and I’m not sure he’s too far off.

So, Natalie Portman took home Best Actress at the Golden Globes last night but her most lasting impression may be the cringeworthy acceptance speech capped off the dorkiest laugh ever. Sorry, Brendan Fraser, your amazing clap has been dethroned. But onwards and upwards--the actress has a new movie opening Friday, the friends with benefits comedy "No Strings Attached" with Ashton Kutcher. Details on the soundtrack for the film have arrived and they're....interesting. Hipster faves like Bishop Allen and Mark Ronson are found alongside the smoothest man alive D'Angelo, and constant soundtrack contributor Leona Lewis. The Plain White T's deliver a…...

The Alamo Guide
for January 8th, 2010
Apologies for the late email this week. I was celebrating 2010 out of town, and then when I got home I was distracted by the intensity of the Texas vs. Alabama game. Bummerrrr. Oh well. We can all drown our sorrows in some Alamo fun this weekend! First of all, The Monster Squad screening was so popular that we added a second one later that night so there’s still a chance to see the Cast And Creators In Attendance! Youth In Revolt, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart all open up this weekend. Girlie Night presents Romy & Michele’S High School Reunion on Tuesday, so get your business women outfits ready (but please have your fake job description ready)! If you’re a foodie and love our Alamo feasts, The Alamo Iron Chef competition returns with a battle between Alamo kitchen and...

From the official synopsis for the truly laugh-out-loud funny Harmony and Me, written and directed by Bob Byington (Rso: Registered Sex Offender) and starring indie rocker-turned-actor Justin Rice (Mutual Appreciation): One of the highlights of New Directors/New Films 2009, Bob Byington's hilariously deadpan slacker film for the cell phone generation takes place in independent film capital Austin, Texas, where a voluble young lyricist named Harmony refuses to let go of the heartbreak caused when his girlfriend became his ex. He remains stubbornly unhappy, perhaps for musical inspiration or perhaps because it’s just the way he is. Although his depression annoys his tough mom, Harmony's friends, as oddball and eccentric as he, seem perfectly cool with his cultivation of misery. Starring musician Justin Rice as the motormouthed Harmony and Kevin Corrigan as his sidekick Carlos, Byington's film presents a goofy portrait of a bright guy and his buddies running in place.

"Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" wasn't the end of the road for Bishop Allen's film appearances. Frontman Justin Rice stars as the leading actor in "Harmony & Me," a movie that's been making the rounds at events like the Los Angeles Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Cine-Vegas Film Festival. BA's bassist Keith Poulson also makes an appearance, alongside actors like Kevin Corrigan (Pineapple Express, Superbad, The Departed), and Pat Healy (Rescue Dawn, Ghost World). "Harmony & Me" was directed by Bob Byington, whose only other recent film work includes "Rso (Registered Sex Offender)." He scored an Annenberg Film Fellowship...

Playful and mild debut from Mogis-produced band
Elizabeth Ziman’s voice brims with a fresh confidence against punchy drums and jazzy guitar riffs on the debut album from Elizabeth & The Catapult. “We’re all just taller children,” she sings on the title track, critiquing the immature behavior of adults between saxophone honks. Produced by Mike Mogis (known for his work with Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, and M. Ward), Taller Children is upbeat, just-sweet-enough pop along the lines of Bishop Allen and Cake. Ziman seems equally comfortable drawing on her New York City roots to create an edgier sound (“Race You”) as well as mining the folk tradition for a plucky, shining authenticity (“Complimentary Me”). The second half of the album drags a bit, especially the lackluster cover of Leonard Cohen’s cover “Everybody Knows,” which highlights Cohen’s lyrics over Ziman’s vocals, but the slower, orchestrated tracks have more to offer.

The role of a music supervisor on a film can vary, usually depending on how proactive the director is about the music he or she envisions in the film. Some directors make integral music choices from day one, and others have their music supervisor to make those decisions for them. Either way, putting it all together is a job that's crucial to any film, yet often goes unnoticed. Linda Cohen is a music supervisor whose work has clearly not gone unnoticed. I got to talk with her about the business, sitting in a bathroom with Stephin Merritt and of course, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, who is apparently as professional and nice a lad as he appears.
In the interest of getting a peek at the kinds of things that someone of Cohen's caliber gets to see and hear, I asked her to tell me about some of the films she's...

Same old pop—not that there’s anything wrong with that
“I would choose the darkest horse; that’s the horse I’d ride,” Bishop Allen frontman Justin Rice sings on Grrr...’s opener, “Dimmer.” Judging by his band’s career arc, it’s likely he’s not just spinning a metaphorical yarn about racing animals. Following a couple of acclaimed albums (in 2003 and 2007), an ambitious Ep project (one released every month in 2006) and a high-profile film appearance (last year’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Bishop Allen is a self-made success story. Falling largely within the pleasing indie-pop framework of the band’s previous releases, Grrr... doesn’t exactly pave innovative new ground. In place of the sometimes-raucous tracks of 2007’s The Broken String is a more restrained—but no less sublime—sound, perhaps honed by the band’s relentless touring over the past couple years. Perfectly enunciated lyrics,...

Bishop Allen has broken through to a larger audience than any Brooklyn Diy power-pop duo could be expected to, first by landing the twinkly song “Click, Click, Click, Click” in a camera commercial, then by belting out the ferociously catchy “Middle Management” in the movie Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The band’s third LP, Grrr…, is designed to appeal to fans of those two semi-hits; it’s a record full of explosive percussion, scratchy guitars, and fragments of melody that bandleaders Justin Rice and Christian Rudder repeat until they wear down listeners’ resistance. Much of Grrr… ventures pretty ...
