“Kieler Street” begins with the aerial shot of sleepy small rural town Slusvik, on the Norway-Sweden border. The camera pans from a bright blue sky to a pine forest, then quaint slate gray houses nestling by a network of lakes. A guitar twangs placidly over the scene, as if a song is about to start up.
Cut, somewhat violently, interrupting song and general shot, to a car’s back wheel, then its driver, a man, Jonas, telling someone, talking into the car mirror, that he’s left his wallet behind. Except that there’s no one else in the car. Jonas is obviously practicing before telling someone a lie.
That contrast – surface soporific normality versus violence, deception – runs throughout the 10-part series. And violence soon, and increasingly, begins to win out.

Universal Pictures has released the trailer for Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire, which is the fourth film in the Dragonheart fantasy film franchise. In this film, Patrick Stewart provides the voice of the dragon Drago. This is a role that Sean Connery played in the 1996 film and Ben Kingsley played in the third film in 2015. Here's the synopsis"
In Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire, Patrick Stewart voices Drago, the magnificent dragon who became bonded with King Gareth. When the king dies, his potential heirs, twin grandchildren who possess the dragon’s unique strengths, use their inherited powers against each other to vie for the throne. When Drago’s source of power – known as the Heartfire – is stolen, more than the throne is at stake; the siblings must end their rivalry with swords and sorcery or the kingdom may fall.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Tommy Wirkola. Writers: Stig Frode Henriksen and Vegar Hoel and Tommy Wirkola. Cast: Vegar Hoel, Ørjan Gamst, Martin Starr and Jocelyn DeBoer. Director Tommy Wirkola returns to the zombie genre with Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead. After dabbling in bigger films, including Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013), Wirkola returns to where he began, indie horror. This sequel, to the 2009 film, picks up right where the last one ended. Martin (Vegar Hoel) is still dealing with cursed, Nazi zombies. This time, the enemy is growing and seeking revenge, on a small town, in Norway. This sequel utilizes lots of exterior shootings, while relying on a comedic and light tone. Horror elements are minimized. And, any real thrills or scares are forgotten, in favour of over-the-top camp. Still, Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead brings a great...

Over the years there has been a boom in Norwegian horror with films like Dark Woods, Manhunt, Cold Prey and it’s sequels and, of course, Tommy Wirkola’s Nazi zombie epic, Dead Snow. And now comes the sequel, Dead Snow 2: Red or Dead, which picks up directly where the last film ended. For those that don’t remember, the original film saw a group of horny teens head out to a cabin miles from nowhere, high up in the snowy Norwegian mountains, with no cell phone reception and no car. Dead Again: Wirkola Outstays Welcome of Outlandish Gimmick
For those that were generally amused by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola’s breakout festival hit Dead Snow (2009), in which a group of skiers were accosted by a gaggle of Nazi zombies, then avoiding its sequel, Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead may be in order if you wish to retain your pleasant memories of the first chapter. Suffering from a rampage of defiant narrative mistakes often administered in unnecessary sequels, this rehash is laconic, unenthusiastic and inherently routine. Now, the motivation of these zombie zealots has to be rationalized and explained to some degree, which only kills the slightly amusing idiocy of the first film—a feeling akin to the difference between joking about an easy target like Christian Scientologists, and then, say, being forced to attend an eight hour seminar that seriously teaches its religious tenets.

And his friends Still got devoured by a battallion of Nazi Zombies. This morning, he woke up in a hospital bed with a new arm – but it’s a super-powered Zombie arm that wants to kill him, and anything else it can reach. Martin’s Pissed. “These are not your textbook zombies. These are cursed zombies, awakened to complete a task given to them.” The fight between the living and the risen dead continues in Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead. The new trailer shows Martin once again fighting Colonel Herzog’s Nazi zombies, but this time he has to deal with a possessed arm reminiscent of Ash’s infected hand from Evil Dead 2.

Director Tommy Wirkola has achieved something that few are able to do: He made a horror sequel that surpasses the original in every way with Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead. At least I thought so when I saw it earlier this year at the Stanley Film Festival (read my review here). You'll be able to weigh in on this yourself when WellGo brings the film to select theaters on October 10th. Until then, enjoy this U.S. trailer that Shock is happy to exclusively debut.
Vegar Hoel, Stig Frode Henriksen, Martin Starr, Ørjan Gamst, Ingrid Haas and Jocelyn DeBoer star.

In the wilderness of Norway, a battle between medical students and Nazi zombies resulted in a lot of lost limbs and bloody carnage. The fight between the living and the dead continues in Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, writer/director Tommy Wirkola’s sequel to his blood-drenched 2009 zombie feature. The movie’s new poster offers a warning of a headless horror to come.
“They’re not just zombies. They’re Nazi zombies.
And there’s a lot of them. On the orders of a rotten Führer, the zombies from Dead Snow return to settle old German scores. In the continuation of the epic splatterfest from 2009, Martin, the sole survivor of the first movie, prove that there’s more badass shit in Northern Norway than even Nazi zombies would be prepared for. The table is set for a massive revenge epic, where blood, guts, brains and throats are not the...

Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. They'll also have panels, and they've got some great ones planned. Overall, it looks like a really cool chance to see a fistful of the best of what indie horror has going on right now with bonuses that simply make the weekend better. From August 21 to August 24, you'll be able to check out some great films. How? Well, here's how they put it: Tickets for All screenings are free to attend...

Dead Snow: Red Vs. Dead will be making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and we have a look at the festival teaser trailer for the upcoming zombie sequel.
Directed once again by Tommy Wirkola, the story continues when “The gruesome Nazi Zombies are back to finish their mission, but our hero is not willing to die. He is gathering his own army to give them a final fight.” The movie stars Vegar Hoel, Stig Frode Henriksen, Martin Starr, Ørjan Gamst, Monica Haas, Jocelyn DeBoer.

Sundance is looming and, this weekend, a trailer for the sequel Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead has landed with the sound of a decapitated head hitting the pavement. The film is making its premiere next month at the festival. The preview is loaded with footage from the first film, Dead Snow , but it's an amusing glimpse at what's to come (looks like someone has a "power arm"). In the sequel, the gruesome Nazi Zombies are back to finish their mission, but our hero is not willing to die. He is gathering his own army to give them a final fight. Vegar Hoel, Stig Frode Henriksen, Martin Starr, Ørjan Gamst, Ingrid Haas and Jocelyn DeBoer star. Tommy Wirkola directs.

The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.
The Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah, and we will be there to cover as many of the films as humanly possible. Director of Programming, Trevor Groth, had this to say in a statement.

The sequel to Tommy Wirkola's (Dead Snow), Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, will show at the Sundance Film Festival, in 2014. The premiere will take place in mid-January, in Utah. This cast for this title includes: Martin Starr (Superbad), horror veteran Derek Mears and Amrita Acharia. The film stays with the comedic roots of the original. In Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, the story brings back Nazi zombies from chilly climes of Norway. Here, a troupe of zombie killers, from America no less, is tasked with reliving certain elements of World War II. Two new stills have been released for the film (above and below). In one photo, the undead are ready to launch an attack on anyone who gets in their way. A second photo shows one character with a fatal wound, to the head. Both photos are hosted here as the film moves to its World Premiere.

You may have noticed Uncle Creepy posting lots of imagery from films playing at Sundance 2014 earlier today, and now we have the full announcement of which horror projects are included in the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight lineups.
As mentioned when posting the first wave of films screening this year, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly what's horror-related, so below are our best guesses of what we'll be covering from this latest batch or are films that sound just fringey enough that we'll be keeping our eyes on them:
Spotlight
Blue Ruin / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Jeremy Saulnier) — A mysterious outsider’s quiet life turns upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving to be an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Cast: Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Sidné Anderson, Devin Ratray,...

I had a hunch that Cooties (read here) and Adam Wingard’s The Guest (read here) might make it into what appears to be a line-up of eight (there might be some wiggle one for one last minute inclusion), but this year’s section flaunts a more international palate with the latest from Norway’s Tommy Wirkola (sequel to Dead Snow – which showed at the fest in 2009) reps Europe, Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement return to the fest they broke out of with Eagle Vs. Shark but with a mockumentary (What We Do in the Shadows) that might compliment the inclusion of Jim Jarmusch’s latest. Oceania gets further representation with Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and from Asia, the program assures some blood splatter with The Mo Brothers’ Killers. William Eubank arrives with a title that might sound familiar for those who hit the fest in 2007, but this version of...

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

Before there was Dead Snow, there was Kill Buljo. An irreverent action comedy that sort of spoofed Kill Bill whilst very much ripping into the stereotypes of northern Norway - home to director Tommy Wirkola and writer-star Stig Frode Henriksen - Kill Buljo is what first drew attention to the Wirkola-Henriksen duo, who have since teamed up on big budget Hollywood offering Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters. And though Wirkola is currently hard at work directing Dead Snow 2 that doesn't mean they've forgotten their earlier creation. Oh, no.Now in post production for a winter release is Kill Buljo 2. After having a solid enough box office (if not exactly a critical) success with his English-language debut "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," "Dead Snow" filmmaker Tommy Wirkola is reteaming with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's production company Gary Sanchez to develop a half-hour series at Showtime. According to Deadline, the untitled project is a dark comedy based on "Hellfjord," a TV series Wirkola created, wrote and produced in his native Norway with Kjetil Omberg, Terje Strømstad and Stig Frode Henriksen. The seven-part "Hellfjord" screened at Fantastic Fest last year, where programmer Todd Brown described it as falling "into the sweet spot between 'Hot Fuzz' and 'Twin Peaks.'" Exclusive: After collaborating on Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, the movie’s writer/director Tommy Wirkola and production company Gary Sanchez are reteaming, this time on the TV side. Norwegian filmmaker Wirkola and Gary Sanchez’s Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have set up a half-hour project at Showtime. The untitled dark comedy, now in development, is based on the 2012 Norwegian half-hour series, Hellfjord, which Wirkola created and produced with his partners Kjetil Omberg, Terje Strømstad and Stig Frode Henriksen through their Tappeluft Pictures. Wirkola, Henriksen, and Zahid Ali, the writers on the original seven-episode series, will also write the Showtime adaptation. Wirkola will direct the potential pilot and will executive produce with Ferrell and McKay. Described as in the vein of Hot Fuzz and Twin Peaks with a Nordic noir twist, Hellfjord centers on a disgraced Oslo police officer (Ali) who, after a freak horse accident, is banished to serve...

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

No, while video is in short supply, stills we have. Here's the back story for those who may have missed previous articles. In a day where shows are made, remade, and rehashed to remade again so that they become a Möbius strip of canned tedium that screams into a void paying as much attention to it as it does a mosquito bite, to see something pass by on its own set of legs is a mind-numbing pleasure. And what a set of gams Hellfjord has on it. From the very beginning, it wastes no time in piquing interest, it has a sale to make and wants to make sure everyone buys in. Hellfjord starts with Salmander (Zahid Ali) getting transferred from his position in the Oslo police force. He is a lightning rod of a PR nightmare due to actions involving his horse, Gunnar, at the Independence Day parade, actions that left many people traumatized. Unable to can him instantly due to technicalities, the department’s next best option is to ship him far, far...
